Oliver Jonas Queen Billionaire/Vigilante/Martial Artist Starling City, California, USA Queen Industries Heir

C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T

"After surviving on an Island for five years, I've learned a few things. The most important lesson I learned is that anybody can make a Hell on earth. That's why I do what I do, to make sure that never happens here. This city is getting pretty close though...I have a LOT of work to do to save as many lives as possible."

Oliver Queen, the young heir of Queen Industries, was on a small yacht when it was sabotaged. Oliver Queen nearly drowned but somehow made it to the shore of a small island, Lian Yu in the North China Sea. He probably would have died if it were not for the help of a fellow inhabitant named Shado.

With Shado's help, Oliver Queen survived and even thrived as he learned survival skills, Kyudo [Archery], and used his intelligence and inventiveness to create weapons and tools from what was available nearby. It soon became apparent that the island was home to an illegal operation, to which Oliver responded with Guerilla tactics, and managed to secretly supply the forced laborers with weapons long enough to plan a revolt which resulted in the expulsion of the organization from the Island.

With the island free from control, eventually, Oliver managed to get the attention of a ship which lead to his rescue from the island along with the other island survivors. Shado departed ways with Oliver once she learned he planned to go back to Starling City to inherit his position as heir to Queen Industries so he would have the tools and backing necessary to do as much good as he could in the world and especially his hometown of Starling City.

I've liked Green Arrow since I saw him in the cartoons but I have to admit I never really cared for his looks that much. Then Arrow came along with a look more to my liking, especially without that atrocious goatee, so I've been considering a run with him for a while. I do think the arrowverse version is way too much batman-lite however, so I want to create something a little closer to the cartoons in character, but with some of the elements of Arrow as well.

Green Arrow is first and foremost, a man of the people, one who wants to help the poor and downtrodden as much as possible. While he loves to fight and root for the underdog he is also part of high society and knows that not everything is so black and white. His primary targets are those who exploit people, drug lords, sex-trafficking, and corporate corruption. Of course he also targets those who are a danger to the public, especially so called super-villains and the like, but his primary purpose is to make life better for others rather than bringing people to justice.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S

Tommy Merlin – Old friend of Oliver Queen who was with him during his party years. Still tries to remain friends with Oliver but finds him quite different from his younger days. He is a good reminder to Oliver that he is still a part of the 'upper' world as Oliver Queen.

Mia Dearden – A young girl stuck in the vile web that is the sex-trafficking ring. She is looking for a way out and the Green Arrow's activities could just be her chance to escape.

Shado – A mysterious, young, Japanese woman he met on Lian Yu who saved his life and helped teach him ways to survive and fight there. Shado was very secretive and the best Oliver could figure out was that she had an affiliation to the Yakuza and quite a bit of martial arts training. Oliver was a bit disappointed she decided to not to come with him and still wonders where she went and what she is doing.

James Cameron – Police lieutenant in the SCPD. Prides himself on being hard on criminals and has a distrust of masked vigilantes. Wouldn't mind nabbing Green Arrow along with the criminals but is more than willing to capitalize on his activities in order to take down crime.

Naomi Singh – A skilled computer analyst and software developer, her technical skills come in quite handy when having to deal with high tech crime.

Henry Fyff – A man with a passion for R&D and weaponry, Oliver has found him to be the perfect fit to help keep his arsenal updated and full of new and useful toys. Has a deep crush on Naomi Singh.

China White – A high ranking member of the Chinese Triad, China White is a ruthless gangster who is not below using any method at her disposal to ensure the Triads foothold in Starling City. A skilled martial artist, assassin, and small arms expert, her skills are not limited to employing her organization to do her dirty work.

Daniel Brickwell 'Brick' – Daniel Brickwell is a powerful mobster who has a heavy presence in The Glades part of Starling City. While his gang is dangerous, the man himself is a metahuman with skin as strong as brick making him a very hard opponent to fight against even with weapons. He prefers a more brute force approach to things but is by no means a pure muscle head.

Onomatopoeia – A strange villain who only speaks in 'sounds'. A mysterious individual with unknown motivations, but he certainly has no qualms with taking innocent lives in the process of a job.

S A M P L E P O S T

The lights, the glamour, the women, it was a strange feeling coming back into Starling City's circle of high society. One half of him was glad to be back into his spot as one of Starling City's most adored members of society, but the other half remembered the horrors of Lian Yu and balked from the extravagance of it all. How many people could live such a decadent life in Starling City? A lot more than he wished to admit, especially when comparing them to the majority of the city.

If Oliver Queen was honest with himself he did miss the women though. I guess there had been Shado, but when survival and taking down an illegal operation were the primary concerns, there was little room for relationships. Shado had been more of a firm hand than a comforting companion anyway.

"Nice homecoming bash you got going here Ollie. I see you haven't lost your touch after 5 years." Tommy Merlin smirked as he approached Oliver Queen who had a beautiful brunette on one arm and a glass of champagne in his free hand.

"I'm rather surprised myself after 5 years in the North China Sea, kind of figured maybe I'd have lost my charm. It would appear that the mystery I acquired from my time on that island has made up for that. Women can't ignore a man of mystery after all." The brunette giggled on his arm and gave him a little squeeze. Oliver smiled back at her, she was a beautiful woman, Ellie if he remembered correctly, but apart from her looks he had realized that he felt no deeper attraction. She seemed smart and intelligent but she wouldn't understand what he would be trying to do, she was too entrenched in her ways and her station to become anything but a passing acquaintance to him.

"Well I admit, it is quite the mystery how you managed to survive so long without your prized wi-fi and night clubs!" Tommy jested as he lifted his own glass of champagne toward Oliver, who returned the gesture before they both took a sip.

At the moment they were all up in the pent-house suite of one of Starling City's finest hotels at Oliver Queen's expense. It was only natural that the prodigal son, though not of his own choice, have such a magnificent bash to signify his return to the elite circles of Star City. All the biggest names had been invited and the service was superb. It really was a colossal waste of time and money, or at least it would if it had been the Oliver of five years ago.

If there was one thing the rich loved, it was their vices, and fancy parties were some of their favorite places to spread the word of their newest amusement. Oliver made sure to keep his ears ready to snatch the latest bit of gossip and while there was a good chance some of the elites would try to share their findings with the new billionaire in town, he was also now an unknown, but he knew some of the places where people liked to talk, where a few bugs would be waiting to snatch up anything of interest.

"You certainly have a lot to catch up on Oliver. Just give me a call when you want the scoop on the hottest new digs in town!" Tommy took up a spot beside Oliver and took another sip from his drink.

"It is surprising what can change in five years, but also comforting to see what hasn't changed." Oliver took a look around at the top crust of Star City. It was the same worthless drivel as ever, it was sad it had taken five years and a lot of hell to open up his eyes to the truth. He couldn't change the past, but he was sure as hell going to make sure to change Starling City's future, before all that was left in Starling was the rich and the poor, the overlords and the slaves.

Oliver Queen had been given a second chance, and he was damn well going to make sure he did it right.

C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

“I’m the one causing the trouble. Just by existing. But what else is new?”

Sojourner Mullein grew up in the shadow of September 11th, and perhaps was the key reason why she was dedicated to serve. Dedicated to the core tenants of the ideals of protecting those who needed it. She rose in the ranks to become a well-decorated NYPD officer until the dominos began to fall around her. Corruption in the force, her refusal to acclimate to the “thin blue line”, and circumstance led to her removal from the line of duty.

However, it would be her stance to oppose great fear that would draw her to the injured body of Abin Sur when his ring selected her as his successor. To succeed him as a Green Lantern.

The Green Lanterns. The police of the greater cosmos—interstellar agents of peace and justice. It would be an honor that took her through the trials of Kilowog and Sinestro. A large task, but if being a regular cop had taught her anything it was to expect the unexpected and to prepare for the worst. If a Green Lantern died on Earth against an unknown threat, then the Lanterns needed the very best, even if they had no clue how the greater galaxy worked. All Sojourner knew was she intended to give it her all. And so begins her story.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

The crux of this concept is Sojourner Mullein in the role of Hal Jordan.

Unlike her comic, The Far Sector, I’m intending to have the newer addition to the Green Lantern mythos play a more traditional role within the corps. No special assignment or special ring, just a lot of the basics. With the death of Abin Sur, his ring finds itself with a down on their luck police officer from New York City after extrapolating circumstances has struck her removed from the NYPD.

Unlike past versions of the Lantern Corps in these games that I've tried, I’m not planning on over-complicating it. The goal is to try to lean on old police serials and films like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon and tell a variety of stories in a space pulp format. Should I get accepted I will keep room open for all sorts of development on this end, including legacies, adjacent characters, and so forth. The idea is start small since we are convincingly in a ‘year zero’ point-in-time. Choosing this instead of less contested characters just feels the most honest to what I'm currently interested in doing. Let's have it work out.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

This space will be periodically updated as characters are thought of and established, I don't like to plan fifty-five steps ahead so don't expect this to be fully loaded from the start.

S A M P L E P O S T:

“Duty” Part 1

“Sojourner Mullein, you have shown the ability to overcome great fear.”

It had been a statement that would pull the New York native from the bottom of a bottle.

A statement whispered into the very center of her soul. By a thing. A shiny green ring that fell out of the sky and into her lap. It sought her out. As if she was the only one who had overcome great fear in the entire world. Her instincts didn’t embrace it. If anything, her instincts told her that she was dreaming, because there was no amount of alcohol that would make her visualize a shiny green ring snapping on her hand and taking her halfway across the planet. This wasn’t normal. These things didn’t happen. Not to people like her.

But it did happen.

The universe didn’t care about the color of your skin, or what planet you were from, or who you thought you were.

She still didn’t understand it. But the choice was not hers or even Abin Sur’s to make. It was the ring’s choice. The Guardians built the ring, but they did not orchestrate it. It moved like the wind and sought out who it knew was the right fit. Turns out that despite thinking little of herself Abin Sur’s ring thought differently. Believed in her. Knew that she was the only choice to make when it came to recruiting a new intergalactic arbiter of peace and justice. A new Green Lantern.

Even with all of the training that came from being a new member of the Green Lantern Corps, she still wasn’t entirely sure how to process everything. She had been flung half-sober across the planet to meet a dying alien before being flung off across the galaxy to be educated what exactly being a Green Lantern meant. Her entire world changed in no less than fifteen minutes. Not many people could come to terms with something so massive in that kind of time. She certainly couldn’t. At the very least she could rest easy knowing while she was learning intergalactic protocol that this was the best case for everyone. Maybe she could return to Earth after she got acclimated to the job, see how she could help now that she had the ability to do more than she ever could before.

But first, she had to get the hell off of Oa.

Oa.

That is, the planet the ring had taken her to for her preliminary training and education as a Green Lantern. The headquarters for the Guardians of the Universe, a bunch of short blue men who observed the conduit to which gave the Lantern Corps their powers. Or at least that’s what Jo could understand from the information she had gathered. Information that she was still unpacking. Information that made her time in the army, Princeton, and the NYPD all seem like one of the summaries books had on the back to give you a clue if they were any good.

Kilowog, the veteran in charge of teaching pretty much everybody, told her that the time would be soon enough. God, she hoped so.

--

“Welcome to the Green Lantern Corps, Sojourner Mullein.”

“Thanks.” She managed, as she crossed her arms, looking toward the streets below.

It was a weird thing to hear out loud. But she was starting to get used to weird.

“The ring is trusting you. So don't let it down.”

“Yeah...” Jo looked down at the ring on her hand, thinking about what Kilowog had told her. “...right.”

It wouldn't be a real game if I didn't act like a wishy-washy SOB. I voided out my first. I think it's too ambitious for where I am in my life right now. I wouldn't have enough time to write it like I would want.

LUCIFER

LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR NGHTCLUB OWNER/EX-KING OF HELL LOS ANGELES

C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And that light was brought forth by his favorite angel. Lucifer, the Morningstar. But three seconds after Creation, Lucifer rebelled. For the ultimate sin of questioning God he was banished from Heaven into the lightless pit teeming with demons and other abominations. After a millennia of warfare in the pit Lucifer emerged as ruler over the void and christened it Hell. From his throne Lucifer spent billions of years torturing mortal souls, keeping the bloodthirsty demons at bay, and warring with God and the forces of Heaven.

But fifty years ago something happened.

Lucifer became bored. Bored of the endless routine Hell offered, tired of the intrigue from demons, and fed up with humanity's preconceived notions of the devil. He was tired of being the scapegoat for humanity's flaws. People did not sin because he made them, they sinned because they were human. So Lucifer did what anyone does when they're fed up with a job:

He quit.

He left Hell behind and now lives in Los Angeles. His piano bar, Lux, caters to the rich and famous of L.A., the weirdos and the depraved, the ones who are truly free... you know, his kind of people. But in the five decades since his abdication, Hell has gone... well, you know... and the divisions between Earth and Hell are beginning to fray. Something is coming. And unlikely as it may be, the devil may be the best savior Earth has.

S A M P L E P O S T:

Hollywood
2:21 PM

He sat in the semi-darkness of the club, playing to a room of empty chairs. His long, graceful fingers danced around the keys of the piano. He played the mournful melody with his eyes closed as he sang.

“Now I've heard there was a secret chord that David played, and it pleased the Lord but you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift. The baffled king composing ‘Hallelujah.’”

The voice that came out of his mouth was beautiful, quite literally angelic. Just like his looks. His perfect blonde hair and crystal blue eyes were part of a face that turned heads wherever he went. The only mar to the beauty was the scar. A great gash that ran from his left eyebrow to his right jaw. It was a battle scar, delivered by a fiery sword wielded by his own brother.

“I did my best; it wasn’t much. I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch. I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you. And even though it all went wrong, I’ll stand before the Lord of Song with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah...”

John Constantine walked around the edges of the club, unlit cigarette in hand. As the man finished up his song he approached. His blue eyes sparkled even in the dark. Eyes that had seen billions of years of war and suffering, eyes that carried behind them cursed knowledge and a desire for freedom that had been his undoing once upon a time.

“Know any Sex Pistols?” asked John.

“I’ll work on it,” Lucifer Morningstar said, standing. “Thank you for coming.”

“Well, the king of Hell summons you,” said John. “You come toot sweet.”

Former ruler of Hell.”

“Mmm,” John said as he lit his cigarette. “Could never reckon why you gave it all up. I may not be one of those public school ponces, but I know my Milton. ‘Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven’ and all that.”

“A few million years of being a scapegoat for man’s weakness and God’s inequity will turn anyone off the idea of being the devil. Man kills and rapes because he wants to, not because I make him. They were made to be violent and petty, made in His image, but yet they look to me instead of their creator.”

“We love to blame,” said John, holding his smoldering cigarette up. “Bobby Joe smokes three pack a day and when he gets lung cancer, he blames the bloody cigarette company. Don’t take it personal, Lucy, just our way.”

A look of annoyance flashed on Lucifer's face at the use of the nickname. He walked passed John and headed for the club’s bar. John followed in his wake, taking a seat on a stool while Lucifer went behind the bar to the liquor shelf.

“Lux caters to plenty of Hollywood people. Powerful people,” said Lucifer. “One of my regulars came to me recently with a problem. It bores me, but it’s right up your alley, Constantine. You've always enjoyed getting down in the gutters.”

“Need help getting pesky stains off that casting couch?” John asked with a grin.

“Something a bit trickier.”

He took his time, taking a bottle of scotch from the top shelf and pouring himself a glass. John had to resist the urge to laugh. The towheaded cunt was every bit the showman.

“Tell me,” he said before taking a long swig of his drink. “Are you familiar with Jake Stowe?”

@Bounce Dude, sorry for what? It's a good sheet. Any sheet that includes Mogo, best boi Lantern, gets my vote. Also, i'm pretty sure that, among other reasons, the fact that one of the GM's wants to play the legacy i'm looking to play already sealed the fate of my sheet as a reject. Still, i'm holding out hope, because, at the end of the day, it's a story that i am very confident that i can keep a decent writing and posting pace with, which seems to be a very important factor in RP's like this.

And in any case, reading your sheet, with the way my story actually goes, we're actually not incompatible. Specifically because, i did plan for the Lantern corps to be a thing like in your sheet and since your not on Earth, it doesn't actually contradict anything i plan to do with Hal.

GM's allowing, i'm happy to PM you and hash out what characters we each plan to use and what timeframe we plan to use them in and come to a mutual agreement in which we can both play the story we want and maybe even enhance each others stories because of it.

Honestly, the only immediate compatibility issue I can see is the GM's probably not wanting 3 different Green Lantern stories on the go at the same time.

Application sheet done. Except for the sample, which I'll be getting up tomorrow. You all know the origins of Clark Kent, so I kept the details in the concept to only what was relevant and new/changed. I'm also going to keep the character notes basic at the moment so as to not spoil the story. I'd rather characters be a surprise when they show up and for you to wonder who potential villains may be.

@AndyC I'd say let the best man win but that would mean I'd be rooting for you. Good luck.

I do plan on having him don the suit. He will become Superman. And soon. This isn't Smallville, as Hound feared, I'm not going to keep him away from the cape forever. In fact, by the end of the season (if those exist here) I want him to accept his role as a public hero. But, until then, I want to build up to that moment. I want it to feel like Clark is coming to terms with what it means to be a hero. I want it to feel like an earned moment and not just an inevitability.
