"Apologies, Doctor, Lan'thar," Gue'rach replied, sounding sincere in his restating the Lavathulin's official title along with her name. After some time, Elm brought up the fair idea of another meeting concerning the upcoming survey expedition and how they would go about the mission. Geu’rach nodded in agreement with this proposal, “of course.”

After the briefing, Geu’rach set out to do as he had suggested and made his way towards the Prize’s security station. Upon arrival, most of the security staff had already assembled per a request he made along the way. The meeting was relatively brief as he delivered the mission profile as established by Captain Carabello and explained the parameters of the present situation. Most of the staff were familiar with ISA First Contact policies and thus, there were little questions brought forth. With a half-hour passing by, the Auval’kotor officer had his roster of candidates to accompany both teams.

He calculated that a lightly armed delegate would probably be the most appropriate when negotiating with an unknown foreign government. He motioned two stringent security officers to accompany the Captain and his team, only armed with standard-issue sidearms - no rifles: much too apparent and risked elevating threat generation - with strict orders to keep their weapons holstered unless the lives of the delegate members were under clear threat. Gue’rach sometime later had determined three officers, including himself, would be adequate to safeguard the expedition should any of the flora or fauna prove to be more hostile than anticipated. He surmised the planned armaments would also be light though he anticipated that any threats would be met with caution with only the intent to stun. Only he would have the authority to decide if lethal action would be necessary. Hopefully, that would not happen.

By now, the occurrence of attending multiple meetings with different groups of the ship within a short period was slowing grinding away at Gue’rach’s enduring patience and tolerance. Still, he knew better and dare not show it. Although, him exhibiting any kind of annoyance probably would not have made him any more imposing than what was typically the norm, as evident with his stern expression that rarely ever faded. Gue’rach, maintaining said stern expression, stared at the holographic display illustrating the I.S.S. Prize’s position and the surrounding foliage, noting some of the initial geological scans gathered during the ship’s entry through the atmosphere as well as the location of the abandoned ruins that were picked up.

“The plan appears sound, I have no objections,” said Gue’rach while his eyes remained on the display, “I’d imagine that if we were approaching some sort of site of religious significance, it would have been marked in a manner that would be easy for anyone to identify. We should be wary of such visuals to prevent any unintended trespassing. That, and noting any active native traffic in the area.”

For this trip Francesca had chosen somewhat modest attire though still somewhat fashionable. A white, front button dress with white boots. It even came equipped with a hidden hood that she could use if there was a need to cover her hair for any reason. While simple, the clothes themselves were also had their own hidden features. The high-heels on her boots were detachable so that she could run or traverse uneven group easier, in her left sleeve was a hidden knife and attached to her thigh was a hand disruptor should the need arise. Of course these were all to be used only in an emergency and while there was the potential for them to be detected she wasn't going to go into a first contact completely defenseless.

Thankfully Francesca's mind was completely clear today so she was able to remain as calm as only a diplomat could and as white as snow. Astrid was tense, which was understandable though perhaps a bit overzealous in her preparations considering her outfit and equipment. The most obvious thing that stood out though was her uncertainty of anything religious. Religions had a way of unnerving people as often they would encounter thought processes that would differ quite from their own; however, even religion often had a certain logic and rule set that could soon be discovered. Francesca herself was actually religious, though it was much more of a private affair. One of the key questions to answer would be how the locals viewed God, or gods, or even if there was a concept of gods in their religion at all.

Soon enough the shuttle had landed and the captain ordered them to move out. "The best thing we can do now is to remain calm and try to gain as much information as possible during our first meeting. Let's try to appear as gracious as we can and try not to make any moves that could appear hostile."

With her warning in place they marched on.

Francesca had seen a lot of lifeforms in her time as an ambassador so the reveal of the species in front of them wasn't very off-putting. The Holy Vei was indeed quite a large alien, with quite the intricate pattern of colors that seemed to be used everywhere on the planet. If she had to guess, perhaps the aliens felt a very close connection with their home world, which would explain why everything seemed to be done in the same colors as well as their skin. Of course this was all just conjecture at this point, the only real unsettling thing for Francesca as the fact that the alien had completely black eyes. This was a bit of a pain as eyes were usually one of the easiest ways to tell what a creature was thinking, but when an eye was completely one color it made it harder to read through eye contact.

Francesca started to concentrate her mind on reading the Holy Vei's emotions. What came back to her was...colorless, almost like a void or an emptiness. This was a bit unsettling, usually even the calmest of creatures had at least some sort of underlying emotion to read, curiosity, annoyance, contentment even but with her there was just...nothing.

"I have a question for all of you. Why are you here?" It was a surprising question, considering she apparently knew they were going to arrive; perhaps, that just meant all she knew was someone or something was going to come through that wormhole and the prophecy itself was not very specific. Since she had specifically addressed all of them with that question, that meant she didn't have to worry about leaving initial proceedings to the captain since they had all been granted permission to speak.

"I hope you don't mind captain." Francesca stated to Captain Carabello, giving him a slight nod before proceeding. "Greetings Holy Vei, thank you for your invitation." Francesca gave short bow as a sign of respect, all while concentrating as much as possible on the alien.

"We are explorers from beyond the wormhole. Specifically, we are representatives of the Intergalactic Star Alliance and we would be honored for the opportunity to build friendly relations with your people."

D'Artagan

Biologist

Adressing: @Tortoise

D'Artagan was finishing up getting dressed; he knew he had a very long day ahead of him. But he was going to keep a optimistic mindset. Putting on his earring and taking a moment to admire himself in the mirror; walking out of his room and heading towards the briefing room. Today is going to be a very exciting day; because the crew would be venturing though to unexplored lands. He was hoping to gather a lot of information about the fauna.

Once inside of the room he sat beside Henry Jenkins. He knew Henry for the two years he was stationed on the Prize. The interaction he had with him so far was manageable; he was could not complain since he letting D'Artagan keep his job. For the most part he tolerated Dr. Jenkins. Listening to the briefing and of the task at hand. Usually he would go out to collect data or specimens for Henry; but it seemed this time he wanted to personally collect. He wondered if this had to do with that conversation he had with another biologist about this certain specimen being quite rare. It seemed to be another egoistical reason; wanting all of the credit; but the thought came into his mind why then did he did him to come with him.

He was sure Elm and the others would be able to protect the least combat trained staff; he himself could defend himself but he was not sure what they would encounter on the planet. Notching the female that came into the room addressing them all; while she was speaking to them he was writing down as much information as he could. Someone he lived behind the wormhole; was curious what kind of information she knew. His eyes moving towards Jenkins; wondering if he was curious about the alien woman. But more then likely he did not care which disappointed D'Artagan greatly.

Following Jenkins to the biology lab after the briefing; “Are you sure this is wise; i would be more then happy to go in your place” He felt perhaps he was asking too much of Henry. For the most part he was concerned for the well being of his superior and the others. Getting all of the equipment he and Henry would need for the trip.

When she was growing up Robin loved Christmas Eve more than Christmas Day. While she appreciated any gifts that she received it was the sweet anticipation of what the day could hold that made her so excited. This expedition reminded her of those days and she was enthralled with every second of it. Not only the thrill of discovery, but for her the thrill of working alongside colleagues was almost making Robin scream with delight. She had no doubt that those with her on this expedition would prove themselves invaluable, if they were a part of this crew that meant that they were the best of the best, but learning how each member performed and learning about them was a true joy for Robin.

Robin merely nodded at Elm's suggestion of meeting in an hour, and with that she was on her way to the Bio-Lab. En-route she tapped on her communicator and said, "Baby this is Dr. Pearson."

Baby replied and asked, "Good afternoon Doctor, were you successful in vanquishing Fakcoth?"

Robin said with focus in her voice, "Some other time Baby. I need a first contact protocol pack set up for me, light provisions, standard gear, and a side arm. More importantly I want a chai-latte on my desk by the time I hit the door."

Baby replied and asked, "At once Doctor Pearson, shall I pack your recorder with a 2 day or 4 day charge?"

Robin thought for a moment and replied, "Go for four and bring up my personal procedures on my desktop."

Baby replied, "Of course Doctor, your beverage is ready for you at your desk."

Robin entered the elevator and said, "Thank you be there in a minute."

Within a minute Robin walked into the lab and she made a beeline for her desk. She grabbed her chai-latte and took a sip. Robin smiled and said, "Ah perfection in a cup. Thank you Baby."

Baby replied, "You're welcome Doctor Pearson. Your personal procedures are ready for your review." Robin tapped on a keyboard on her desk as she sat down and read through the list Baby had prepared. It was what Baby was to take care of if something happened to Robin and she didn't make it back. Ever since the mission that paralyzed her Robin always made sure that she had things ready just in case. Her will was in order, her funeral wishes were on a file to be uploaded to a server for the ISS Chaplain, she did an update for a video that was to be given to her parents, and lastly she made sure her insurance money was to go into a scholarship fund for the grandchildren of Colonel Thomas J. Beckett.

Once she saw everything was in order Robin said, "Okay Baby save all the information and thank you."

Baby replied, "You're welcome Doctor Pearson and your pack is ready." Robin took a sizable drink of her chai-latte and nodded. She then stood at the doorway of her office and began to eyeball a trash can at the other end of the room. Robin smirked and asked, "You think I can make it Baby?"

Baby replied, "Out of the 270 attempts in the past you have made it 238 times Doctor Pearson. I would say the odds are in your favor."

Robin did two swallows and positioned the cup in her hand like a basketball. She said, "Two seconds left they give it to Pearson who fires from downtown." Robin shot the cup and banked it off of the wall into the trash can. Robin smiled broadly and said, "And the crowd goes wild."

Baby created the sound of a cheering crowd as Robin chuckled. She grabbed her pack with her equipment and said, "Thank you Baby. I need one more for the briefing."

Baby replied, "Acknowledged Doctor Pearson." Within a few seconds there was another chai-latte on a table near the exit. Robin strolled over and picked it up. She said, "Thank you again Baby I'll talk to you when I get back."

Baby replied, "I look forward to hearing about your expedition when you return. Safe travels and good fortune to you and your crew mates."

__________

Robin slowly sipped her chai-latte as Elm gave her briefing. Out of all the people she was working with Robin was looking forward to getting to know Elm the most. She had a good grasp of what was going on and a good plan for approaching the planet. Robin was comfortable with the rest of the crew, and even those she didn't particularly care for Robin was always able to put aside her personal feelings for the good of the mission. Hearing that Jenkins was going on this one made Robin wish she had told Baby to give her a couple shots of scotch in her chai-latte.

When Elm asked for any questions or suggestions Robin shook her head and replied, "Nothing that we can really answer here at this point. Like most first contact missions we're just going to have to hope we don't do too much to piss off the natives and start a war. Otherwise..." Robin nodded and said, "I think you've pretty much covered the basics as well as you can given what we know." Robin finished her drink and started to eyeball the trash can across the room. Then pitched it over her shoulder without looking into the trash can behind her. The sound of it landing in the bottom of the can made her smirk. Robin loved being a scientist but there were moments she missed being a sharpshooter for her commando unit. She gave a slight shrug of her shoulders and said, "Time to get to work."

Elm nodded as Gue’rach made his point about religious sites. “Yes, if the civilization receives visits from other worlds, I would expect such places to be marked. But if not, it is entirely possible that not entering these ruins is so obvious to the entire population that they don’t feel the need to place warning signs there. On the other hand, they would hardly force us to land here if that was the case. Anyway, in some cultures literally anything can be seen as ‘sacred’ so let’s just try to not break things or take them away. Speaking of,” she pierced Doctor Jenkins with a stern look, “we should be extra careful about capturing any live animals.” Jenkins frowned, but didn’t make any comments.

As Robin spoke, Elm just nodded, completely agreeing with her. She smiled as the cup Robin threw landed safely in the trash can. “You are right, doctor Pearson. Time to get started.” With these words Elm got up and left the meeting room.

-----

When finally leaving the ship, Elm took a deep breath. All scans assured them that the atmosphere was completely safe, very similar to what they had on the Prize. But sensors could not tell them about the beautiful light smell of grass after rain which reminded Elm of her home planet. The view was nothing short of breathtaking. The bright blue trees around the clearing seemed so tall it was beyond Elm’s understanding how they do not break in the slightest wind. Not that there was any wind at the moment. She took a few seconds to crouch to closely observe the luminescent moss sprawling on the ground, but got up quickly, knowing that she could lose herself in thoughts very easily. And there was much more to be seen here.

Only one out of the three suns was currently hovering over the scenery, but a second one was just beyond the horizon, ready to shine even more light on the ground. To Elm it felt amazing and she made sure to expose as much of her bark-like skin to the sunlight as possible (and as appropriate). The temperature rose up a bit, but it was pleasantly warm. “At least we won’t be cold,” she smiled. “All right guys, let’s head out.” Double-checking the right direction on her tablet just to be sure, she started walking across the clearing towards the edge of the mesmerising forest where ruins were located. She made sure that her assistant was taking pictures of the moss and roots on the ground, that were glowing in various shades of blue, slightly changing colors as the team stepped on them.

The woman was getting her belongings together, not that there was much to begin with. She had a couple of gadgets she always carried around, but compatibility wise it was a guessing game when it came to foreign worlds. Hell, she might be as useless as a glass hammer out there, who knew. Beatrice kept her attire simple, taking into consideration whom they were meeting. Her clothes were the opposite of eccentric as she opted for a gray blouse and slacks. Her messenger bag, which she carries around more often than not, was a pale shade of blue. Overall, possibly an eye sore for the individual with an interest in fashion. But Beatrice wasn't out to impress anyone, certainly not by wardrobe anyway.

The ride to the meeting place had been uneventful, save for the occasional comment which made Beatrice raise an eyebrow. She remained relatively quiet, not feeling all that comfortable to spew what was on her mind just yet. But she perked up when the buildings came into view. They were...unique, for lack of a better word. Beatrice watched on as they went, trying to intake the numerous detailed designs. It was quite the sight, at least for her. Something about intricacies of architecture which always drew her attention.

Upon their arrival, Beatrice grew a tiny bit apprehensive, despite being perfectly fine for the entirety of the trip. The crew had also voiced the same concerns, although that was to be expected given their situation. But Beatrice was armed, and one couldn't tell form simply glancing over at her.

Once inside the property, Beatrice noticed it was pretty isolated. Though that didn't last long as they were prompted to go through one of the doors. Curiosity clinged to her, and Beatrice wasn't disappointed once she finally laid eyes on the Holy Vei. She was equal parts fantastic as well as menacing. Such was her effect on Beatrice that the woman almost didn't register her words when she spoke. The question threw her off, but then it was Francesca who went ahead and addressed her on their behalf, with permission of course.

At that point, Beatrice didn't know what to expect next.

The air outside of the ship was well, not what he expected. The plant life was odd, and the vein-like roots that covered the ground at the base of the… tree? Mason was going to call them trees. A lack of much other foliage was odd, but there were vines, trunks, and leaves. So, despite the palette swap, they were close enough to a forest you’d find on Earth or perhaps even Elm’s planet to see nothing wrong with them. Yet despite the appearance, there was still a distinct smell you’d expect from a forested area. It was beautiful.

The ambient light the trees gave easily illuminated their path. Mason bet that even in the evening, the plants glow would be more luminescent eliminating the completely darkness a forest is known for. It didn’t take a biologist to appreciate the beauty nature was capable of making.

Mason staggered forward, swinging his arms as he suddenly lurched forward. As he was staring up at the canopy, he wasn’t watching where his feet were going, and they got caught on some vines, tripping him. He was able to catch himself from falling, chuckling that he should be more careful. His miniheart attack over, he was paying attention to the rest of the group. Elm took the lead with her assistants. Some of the others were close behind. Mason eyed everyone, and looked at Jenkins with distain, but then…

Mason jogged up next to D'Artagnan. Of all the people scientifically present, D'Artagnan seemed to be one of the few people who could tolerate Jenkins conceited attitude. At least it appeared that way on the surface. Birds of a feather, probably. They were both pert of the biology wing. Mason didn’t get much opportunity to speak with D'Artagnan on account that he started avoiding the biological lab on account of Jenkins. Now that he thought about it, it was also the reason he avoided the green houses and their relevant workshops since they were in close proximity, ruining chances to actually speak extensively with Elm. Jenkins was an all-around deterrent. But that didn’t matter much now.

“Hello, D'Artagnan. I didn’t realize you’d be joining us. I must have missed you at the briefing room. It will be nice to have a person I can actually speak with from the biology department.” Joked Mason, “These ruins that we’re headed to, what do you think of them? I’m curious if they are actually abandoned. I’m way outside of my field of expertise, but I can’t help feel a little giddy of the prospect of exploring a planet not within the ISA.”

D'Artagnan would have to make sure that Jenkins did not do that could get him in trouble; sometimes he wondered why he was putting his neck out to protect Jenkins. Personally he was excited to explore virgin land; The amount of data he could collect form the planet was making his tail wag wildly. Packing up all the equipment and walking with Jenkins towards the ship. One thing he was worried about was the fauna and inhabitants are hostile; before he walked off the ship speaking a short prayer. Hoping his god Kar'ya would protect him and the others form harm.

After leaving the ship he took a moment to take in the environment; feeling quite pleased with the environment around them. From what he could see it was comparable to a rain forest or jungle; he would have to be careful. But because of his specie's natural quick reflexes; he was quick on his feet and always aware of his surroundings. Turning his attention towards Mason who came over to greet him. “Oh Mason it is nice to see you; i guess Jenkins wanted both of us to assist him. Even though he would rather go by himself to hog all of the glory” The cat man chuckled.

“Personally i have a bad feeling about these ruins; we do not know traps or creatures lurking inside” His face looked quite worried speaking about the ruins. “However i am excited to see what kind of creatures we can observe on this planet” His face turning into one of excitement. He would rather not go to a dangerous ruin; but would rather be in nature and taking as much information on the animals on the planet.

"Interesting statement," came Gue'rach's voice, echoing from behind D'Artagnan and Mason, "You are nervous about the kind of fauna we might encounter and yet you are also eager in witnessing what lifeforms this planet has to offer. That is the sense of adventure, Ya'arani. It is the experience of terror and travel; learning the lessons of danger and beholding the rewards of what nature and perseverance can manifest."

The Auval’kotor pushed forward ahead of the two despite the loads of supplies and equipment he carried. Several duffle bags containing medical instruments and survival gear hung from their straps, supported by his bulky left. While on his rightmost profile, Gue'rach carried something large over his shoulder, simply by its handle. Something that suspiciously appeared to be an anti-gravity trolley cart with a large metallic container magnetically connected to its platform. Apparently, this is what he meant by handling the logistics of their expedition.

"That said," he continued as he looked over to the both of them, "you will not have to worry about such threats. Your fellow security officers and I included will see that no harm comes to you."

For a moment, Gue'rach briefly looked around his surroundings and began speaking again; aloud and apparently to no one in particular, "though I must say, the planet is an excellent example of a significant rarity that has defied cosmic expectations. Consider the trinary star system we are exploring. There are far more singular star systems than those possessing more than one sun. Take that into account that we breathe in the oxygen provided by a habitable world, which is rare in their own right, that resides in such a stellar formation. Note that aspect, especially given that the ultraviolet radiation released by three suns would, in most cases, render worlds such as this one uninhabitable. Not only that, but the gravitational pull exerted by those same stars would also easily destroy the planet if it had fallen inside their - what do humans call it? - ah, their Roche limit."

Gue'rach allowed that sentence to linger for a bit, "allow that sensation to settle in and you'll find greater respect and admiration for the environment you now traverse through... especially for the one worm-like creature whose tail you had nearly stepped on back there. I'm surprised you had missed it."

Vei remained impassive while Francesca explained. Only after she was finished, and no one else immediately added anything, did the alien speak: "...You came here only to explore?" An odd sound came out of her nostrils, something like a snort. Or a growl. "I don't believe you. You are lying. No nation in our history- our yours- has ever explored only for the sake of it. They explore to find new land to conquer." Each word is blunt and unapologetic, but spoken very slowly. And still Nick has that creeping suspicion of something odd in her speech.

Then it clicks. Our history- our yours. How could Vei possibly know the history of humanity? And that slow speech- she's not using a translator. She's speaking English. Self-taught English, from the sound of it. This isn't foresight, or holy magic. Vei has somehow learned the languages and history of ISA, before the Prize ever came through the wormhole.

"Excuse me, Holy Vei," Nick begins, "but how do you know the history of our people?"

Vei smiled. "I am the Holy One. I know many things." She shakes her head, exactly as a human would. Is that natural, or has she learned human body language too? "I am the one asking the questions. You are the ones answering."

Nick glanced to his crewmates, quickly, for support.

Mason tagged along as the little trio moved forward, taking mental notes of the environment while listening to the others. Both D’Artagan and Geu’rach brought up good points. None of them were familiar with the ecosystem here. The party probably wouldn’t know what made a creature dangerous should they come across one. On the flip side, how a creature would assess the party’s threat would also be unknown. How a creature would act in either case was the most frightening aspect of it. And yet, as frightening as it was, Mason could not help but feel a bit excited about it. That sense of danger, plus the possibility of coming across something new involving the physiology for the unknown.

Mason kept his thoughts to himself as they continued forward. “I trust that your team will keep us as safe as they possibly can.” Spoke Mason. “As for this beautiful world, while its existence is fascinating, I’m more interested in the work D’Artagan, Elm, and Jenkins are here to discover.” A hint of distain could be heard from Mason as he finished his sentence there. As they walked along, Mason could not help but notice that it wasn’t just him and D’Artagan. Elm and her assistants seemed pretty eager to explore and discover as well. Elm practically led the charge forward, her assistants taking pictures and keeping notes. Some of their party would crouch and look in between the roots getting a guess for where to look once they made it to the ruins Mason guessed. The novelty of exploring a new world even if only this small fraction of it was almost threatening the plan for setting up base at the stone ruins.

“Speaking of which,” Mason looked towards D’Artagan keeping pace with him, “If I don’t have to work with your mentor, I’m here to give a hand. Like I said before, I’m more of a plus one tourist, but I’m more than capable of aiding you if need be. You and Elm. Perhaps even Geu’rach. Wait, that’s quite a bit of equipment there, are you okay carrying all of that, need a bit of help?” Mason reached out and attempted to grab a hold of one of the duffle bags that Geu’rach was carrying, only for the weight of it to surprise Mason, almost dropping it.

“Okay, never mind, not Geu’rach.” Said Mason quickly collecting his composure from his near accident, “But I can patch you up should up should you hurt yourself carrying everything. But enough about that, you saw a worm? I guess I missed it. I should probably get into a habit of not taking small things for merely common insects or rodents.”

D'Artagnan was relived a little by Gue'rach's statement; he did have a sense of adventure ever since he was a child. Exploring the forested areas of Gal'nor or diving and explores the lakes of Walnari. Him and his brother Porthos were more adventurous one of the family; which build a stronger bond with his Porthos. His job let him explore and study different species of life forms; anthropomorphic or other wise. However this place was different form the others; their was a sense of dread he felt being in this place. He could not put his finger on it but he felt quite anxious being here. “ I do not doubt the effectiveness of the security staff; i just have a bad feeling about this place” He said with a worried look on his face.

Collecting himself for a moment; taking a few deep breaths and smiling at the two males. “But i think everything will be okay” Trying to keep a optimistic attitude as not to negatively effect the others. Following the others while writing down notes of the fauna he could see roaming around. Many of his notes describing the fauna to the best of his abilities. This whole place was quite different from the other planets he had visited.

Elm tried not to get lost in her thoughts as usual. This planet, however beautiful, was new, unexplored and possibly dangerous, so all of them had to be alert. So far they haven’t encountered any animals, aside from some tiny insects which could occasionally be seen crawling on the ground, none of which had shown any interest in the exploration party.

As the team approached the ruins, signs of ancient settlements were beginning to appear around them. Remains of a stone pillar, almost entirely covered by vegetation, with unintelligible markings washed away by centuries. Part of a stone wall, only about two feet tall, exotic red flower growing right from between the blocks. They followed what was most likely once a paved road, now overtaken by vegetation. There were no signs of life or any recent visitors, the place looked abandoned for at least decades. Was it intentional that they made us land here? They must have known that we would go and explore this place. Or it was just a convenient spot far away from their cities, so we wouldn’t get a chance to spy on their actual technology and population? So many questions Elm had no answers to. She hoped that the negotiations were going well and they wouldn’t have to return to the ship to evacuate the planet in case something went wrong.

The team stopped at what must have been a village square ages ago. Several stone huts around looked mostly intact and doctor Izumo was eager to go in and explore. “Okay people and people-like creatures,” Elm grinned, “I suggest we make base here. Once the buildings are explored, we can pick one to move our equipment to, so it’s not out here in the open. Of course only if doctor Izumo determines that it is all right to use the building for such purpose, we don’t want to end up camping in some sort of a temple. We could split up to cover more ground - part should stay here to survey the ruins and the rest can go into the forest to study the flora and fauna.” Needles to say, Elm was planning to go to the woods to finally have a chance to properly look at the tall blue trees and other plants.

“Just remember, nobody goes anywhere alone. Ever. Always be at least in pair with someone, ideally teams of three or four people, especially in the woods.”

Well things had certainly taken a turn for the worse, it was also the first hint of emotion she could notice from her mind reading. The crystal clear color was shattered by a burst of orange, a quick flash of anger, well more like resentment than anything else, it was tempered by her strong mind and remained clam despite the added color. The ripple in her emotions was soon quieted however though there was an undeniable strength in her words, her English words.

Francesca looked back over to the Captain, who she noticed had picked up on this very odd facet of the conversation. She could see the realization dawn on his face that things were a little more complicated than they had first appeared. Nick asked the next obvious question but the Holy Vei was not about to be forthcoming on the subject. For a brief moment she considered perhaps she was a telepath, but that wild theory was quickly discarded, Francesca did not feel such power probing their minds and it she did that conclusions would not lead her to distrust their word.

Francesca stepped toward the Captain's side to give a very quick assessment before things developed any further, making sure to keep to a whisper so only he could hear, trying her best not to accidentally tickle his ear in the process. "She is very firm in her beliefs captain, quite the supreme confidence was it were. Someone has been supplying them with information from our side of the wormhole and no doubt been in contact for quite a while. Someone's been gossiping against us." While there was more she could say, she didn't want to appear rude in front of the Holy Vei so stopped with that observation and then stepped forward again.

"Oh Holy Vei, I urge you to not pass judgement on us so quickly. As you have noted in both our histories there have been many instances of war and bloodshed, but not all exploration lead to such dire results. As members of the ISA, we have learned to live together with many nations and races in relative harmony. We try our best to get along with each other and to extend a hand of friendship to those who wish it." Francesca cleared her throat as she tried her best to appeal to the Holy Vei, they were already under suspicion so it would be best to rock the boat as little as possible.

"I can see that you have your reservations about us, and if you desire it so we shall leave. However, I hope that you can find it in your heart to give us a chance to prove our intentions of friendship toward your people." Francesca gazed at the Holy Vei, using all her skills to read her. The Holy Vei considered herself wise beyond all others it seemed, perhaps she could use that confidence to her advantage.

"With your foresight and wisdom, I believe you will be able to see the truth of our intentions after getting to know us even a little bit better. I pray that you do not merely cast us out without out first testing us, Holy Vei." The best way to proceed was to toss the ball into the other person's court and see how they'd react. "There is much that we could learn from each other."

Aaaand the talks were already deteriorating, despite the fact she stayed silent and as inoffensive-looking as she could and let the people-person do the talking. This Holy Vei looked to have been sanctified via inserting a long, blessed object somewhere it shouldn’t be, because that would explain the stick up her arse. Not that Astrid hadn’t expected someone with the word ‘Holy’ in their title not to be so arrogant she might as well have been French. But perhaps worst of all, she wasn’t even completely wrong, and Astrid had to bite her cheek lest she’d say something about a prison colony in a stereotypical Australian accent.

Seeing Francesca briefly whispering something to the Captain, Astrid used the time to speak up, for one to try and mask the crew’s internal communication a bit and because she wanted to test something. “Exploration has been driven by more than just expansion. Columbus sailed West because he was sick of wasting time sailing around Africa, and Magellan sailed South because Columbus got lost. The Chinese crossed the entire continent along the Silk Road to trade. And let’s not forget the United States sending men to lady Luna of all places to stick it to the Chinese.” That last one was purposefully incorrect, as Astrid wanted to see if Vei would catch it or not. And with that done and Francesca again taking point, Astrid returned to being silent and inoffensive looking again, trying to think of a good way to weasel out of Vei linking her choice of attire and her point of exploring to conquer.

Robin was not disappointed with the expedition so far. The life that was just teeming from this planet was amazing. It had been a while since she had been involved with a first contact expedition and she was hoping it wouldn't be the last either. As much as she enjoyed studying nebulae and various other anomalies from either a shuttle or the scanners of the ship there was something out being in the field. Robin would admit that this did somewhat appeal to her sense of adventure that would always be a part of her. The team that she was with made her feel comfortable. Knowing that Gue'rach had their back made her feel a bit more relaxed. On a lot of expeditions that they went on Robin at times felt like she had to also be "the muscle" of the group if something went wrong. Her commando training on more that one occasion came in handy. Especially om Vega-five when she not only had to help the team she was leading on an science expedition, but the fact that they crossed into a hostile area unintentionally turned the expedition into a fight for survival.

Using her recorder Robin made many observations and notes about the area. What struck her the most was though the area felt somewhat primitive and rustic Robin couldn't shake the feeling that there was so much to be learned from all of this. Her parents would call this "a learning moment" and they would be practically leaping over themselves to study any of the plants here or the ruins.

Elm made his suggestion about making camp in what once seemed to be the town square, and then splitting up to explore. So far Elm had proven to be an effective leader of the expedition. Robin was impressed with the way she carried herself, and maintained a balance between curious observe and leader. It wasn't always an easy thing to do Robin had seen the two extremes before. She either wanted to deck the leader for allowing them to almost get killed because they neglected the group trying to get their names in the science book, or the time Robin almost got court-martialed for taking over an expedition because the leader was running it like it was a military op. The military hearing sided with Robin and they recommended her for the Prize because of her actions.

Robin looked to Elm and said, "I'm with you."

Beatrice's straight face could make the devil shake. She usually managed to mask her emotions quite well, but not at the present moment. Someone with the Holy Vei's status shouldn't be so blind as to pass such baseless judgement against them. The least she could do is hear them out. They were not out for blood, despite the fact that they might as well be at that point going off of the treatment they were receiving.

"And we're not denying history," she quickly chimed in after Francesca, "that would be foolish. We cannot change the past, but we can shape the future—both of our futures."

An infomercial, that's what she sounded like. But a couple of her teammates had already pleaded their case, and some pretty good ones at that. With that said, Beatrice wasn't sure whether the Holy Vei would budge. She was headstrong, claiming to know everything. The interaction at that point could go in any which way. They could attempt to reason all they wanted without much result, who really knew. A myriad of thoughts flooded her mind all at once, possible scenarios that could quickly unfold in the next upcoming moments. They could get ambushed, maybe killed on the spot. Or worse, get dragged away only to get tortured for an ungodly amount of time. Beatrice was sure they were being watched as they spoke. Not that she was the paranoid type, but you couldn't ever be too sure of anything, that much she was sure of from personal experience.

Or...they could continue having their chat.

Vei only stayed silent while the Prize crew said their piece. But when they were all finished, she stood up to her full height, and Nick couldn't help but be a little impressed with how her robes folded around her.

"Very well," she said, after studying their eyes for a long time, "I believe you mean what you say. But I do not believe you are true. The truth is not in you." She pauses, as if this is something significant. "If we accept ISA's friendship, you will want to send more diplomats. More ships. And that means more traffic through the wormhole. More explorers. Trade. More aliens." She makes that growl-snort again. "And then soon our culture is gone, lost amidst the dozens of ISA. I won't let that happen. You are not welcome on Havi. Leave. Do not come back."

-----

The journey back to the Prize was solemn. Aside from calling back the ones who were on the scouting mission, Nick hardly said a word to his crewmates. There was nothing to say. There was no way to spin this mission as a success. With Vei's refusal, the system was essentially off-limits for ISA. And since Vei's system has the wormhole in it, there would be no way to explore this side of the wormhole without violating her territory every time ISA sent a ship through. So the Prize would be recalled, their mission ended, and Nick would almost certainly lose his command. It was the worst day of his life.

Soon the Prize was floating in orbit over the planet, apparently named Havi, and preparing to break away back for the wormhole. Briefing the scouting team on Vei and her command had been difficult, but Nick muddled through it. The Bridge Crew kept glancing at him out of the corners of their eyes. They knew something was wrong, but what was he going to say? There's nothing in the ISA handbook about how to deal with the shameful silence of a failed mission.

But maybe he won't have to. "We're receiving a hail," the Comms Officer perks up, "from a Havi ship. Audio only." Nick gives the order to accept, and the voice that comes through the Prize's bridge sounds absolutely terrified.

"Travelers," the male voice coughed out. "You must help me. I am injured and pursued. I need medical attention."

A cursory scan showed that the hailing ship was very different from the massive vessel that escorted the Prize to Havi. It was unarmed, light, and cramped. And coming in fast. Nick hesitated for a moment, then ordered the alien onboard the shuttle to be transported to the Prize's medical bay immediately.

Korax, First Officer

Things had been fairly quite aboard the ship once the two teams left. There were no major engineering problems, no efforts to force entry to the vessel, no calls for help or indicators that something had gone wrong. The crew carried on with their duties as they usually would, a state of normalcy pervading the vessel.

It did not last.

The return of the envoy team did not thrill, though Korax took the news better than some others might have. They were not the ones who set policy after all, and no doubt this would inspire a fierce debate about sovereignty and other political issues that were beyond its command level. It merely did its job as they prepared to return through the wormhole.

Then the shuttle made its appearance, asking them for aid. Korax did not stop the captain from giving the occupant medical aid, as any would in this situation. There was just a larger issue that this brought with it. "Captain," it said, turning to face the commander. "This individual said he was being pursued. This one recommends bringing the ship to alert so as to prepare for a potential confrontation."

Denise
Medical Anthropologist

No, no, no. They were doing it all wrong!

Denise remained respectfully, uncharacteristically quiet throughout the meeting with Holy Vei. Not because there was nothing useful for her to say, but because everyone else kept jumping in haphazardly. Taking quick notes of the inscription-covered surroundings and the slow, deliberate way Holy Vei chose to speak, it seemed her initial impression of this species as a prime example of an energetically spinning throat chakra was correct. Each word the members of the Prize said… and perhaps more importantly, each word they didn’t say… would be under far more detailed scrutiny than any human could hope to imagine.

The medical anthropologist listened in increasing dismay as the rest of the crew jumped in with dully direct answers to the grand alien’s spoken questions. Spending too much time on denying the divine being’s observations. Being utterly too vague about all the dazzling things the I.S.A. could offer.

Denise had much experience with confronting stubborn ‘smart’ people who wanted nothing more than to ignore all her wisdom. She had learned how to win some of them over to the real wonderful truth of light and healing. With her unique experience, the Lifebringer knew EXACTLY what to say to turn this disastrous meeting around. She opened her mouth and…

Well, she never got to say it, as the Holy Vei just kicked them out of the planet. Looks like nobody would ever know.

Denise couldn’t help but allow a bitter tinge to permeate her aura of peace that day. As the crew were briefed, she kept her gaze down to avoid letting slip a caustic glare toward each and every member of that rash delegation team. As everyone began meandering back to their work stations, the frustrated Divon spritzed a few calming sprays of eucalyptus oil around her prime meridian and ordered a virgin White Russian to take some of the edge off.

But then, fate stepped in, as it is wont to do. It seemed one of Havi’s inhabitants was gravely injured and rushed into the medical bay. That was… excellent news! Hooray!

Denise put down her beverage and unzipped a couple of her emergency kit’s many pouches. Then she booked it toward the medical bay, hoping she would get there before any of those way-too-literal doctor types could ruin yet another chance to bring her beautiful healing techniques to this yearning people!

…For about thirty seconds. Then, heaving for breath, she remembered that miracles are not to be rushed. Denise power-walked the rest of the way to the medical bay with an invigorating sense of purpose.
