The year is 1968 and we are in the midst of a newly charged era of vigilantism and superheroism.

Inspired by Captain America’s efforts in WW2 and an informal guild of domestic heroes known as the Justice Society of America, the 1960s has found itself in a highly charged period of time. Conjoined with social justice reforms, the shadow of the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, and the always sliding door of a cultural drift. Richard Nixon is aiming to be the Republican nominee, while Robert F. Kennedy leads the way for the Democrats. Debates about the “place” of superheroes have come up across many modes, though the ever increasing threats of a biological, supernatural, and extranormal nature seem to be growing today.

A new movement led by Charles Xavier with the discovery of an “x-gene” has sparked controversial discussions. In Europe, three small Eastern European countries have pushed back the Soviet Union despite insurmountable odds. A new Captain America tries to find a solution to the Vietnam problem while following their orders from SHIELD, a newly minted organization tied to the United Nations. These are just some of the things that have taken the world by storm.

And it’s just the beginning.

Interest Check Idea:

Getting back into writing rhythm gives me the weirdest urges to write.

Anyway, this is a callout to all of the Hype-based and influenced DC/Marvel game writers we’ve had in the past. The goal here to get things moving again, a few months removed of our active culture instilled in the last game. I know I’m not everyone’s favorite role-player, but I think I can at the very most be inspired in getting something off the ground.

I was re-reading some of the old games over the weekend and came to realize that while I was waiting for replies to small, slower RPs that at the base of these games is momentum, player agency, and concurrent events. Things where in Superman’s arc would happen and the Batman player would mention it in a news broadcast in the next Batman post. Time was fluid, but it was also… present. Conjoined with reviews of posts and other dialogue we tended to be pretty involved with each other. I’m hoping to do that here.

Assuming everyone is interested in not doing another vanilla idea. This is where 1968 comes in. 1968 is set during the late 60s in a modernized depiction of the era. Similar to what the comic “The New Frontier” and its film adaption did. We can talk about the expectations of tone and historical literacy as needed, but we tend to play loose with those kind of things. Principal question is how many interested and committed people this kind of thing appeals to. So this is just a fire signal in the dark. Any questions, suggestions, and criticism is welcome.

On character roles and investment. I think two characters will be the hard-cap this time around, and I haven’t personally decided what story I want to tell within this framework. I have a Batman story in the reserves, but he’s a popular character. Got a few for others.

Really trying to lean into being a better GM and more consistent writer in 2021. Hopefully with the right co-GMs (and interest in the idea) I can make this work.

I mentioned my interest on Discord but I might as well post it here too. I just finished watching that new Batman animated movie and while that was set in the 70s, it did spark my interest in writing some Richard Dragon plots which should fit in a late 60s setting.

I'd be interested as well. Involving Richard Dragon is a pretty cool idea. Volatile time to be writing about, could be a lot of fun. A lot of room for political clashes both metaphorical and literal.

Cool ass idea.

I would be curious if it is to be DC/Marvel shared universe story what elements are being merged and if it is a "it has always been this way" merging or an Event merge, like a recent catastrophic event.

Generally we design these things as "always has been" kind of way. A singular, one-universe kind of deal.

Awesome. That's what I was hoping for. A post-cataclysmic joining could be cool, but with the 1968 setting it would probably only distract from that main hook of it being 1968.

Gonna toss my hat in the ring, I don't have any idea going in but I like the setup and I like comics so I can get down with the idea.

You and I have done this before. So, like you, I have an idea on the shelf. Going through the music of the period looking for ideas.

Interesting idea. Would this be set with the Silver Age mindset as well? Like, are we likely to see HYDRA and SHIELD battle for supremacy with a game of baseball? Joker's giant custard-pie thrower is literally just custard that will splatter and ruin everyones suits, rather than the pie being made of acid that will melt them or something?

Or when you say "Modernized" Do you mean along the same tone as Watchmen which was set in the period. Meaning that the villains of the day are Commies and the KKK?

My biggest influence is the comic The New Frontier and its film adaption, so there will be probably more of a serious “as the era was, not as comics depicted it” tone as opposed to a light-hearted one. This is not to say it will be dour, as hope and optimistic commentary are the baseline direction.

I think we are limiting to DC/Marvel this time around to keep things cohesive. No Dark Horse, IDW, etc. Same rules about legacy characters as usual.

I was wondering more on:

- Villain PCs
- Rules on alternate dimensions/time travel
- Do both primary and secondary characters need to be one each from DC and Marvel

We may discuss the prospect of villain PCs, but I would like those to be reserved as secondary slots if so desired. We will open the table to if the group wants them or not and the issues with them.

To answer the second question I've always been keen on it being a "GM approval" requirement. Some travel is more appropriate than others. Power Girl's origin is quite different than say, something a little more game-breaking and intrusive. I would prefer players keep it simple as we build up the setting.

As for the third question, I don't really care. Some people are more versed in Marvel and not at all in DC, so I don't think locking it to one from each publisher is tantamount to wise player restrictions.

Oh I absolutely must volunteer some kind of blacklisted pinko superhero. I can only wonder who it would end up being.
