Hey, OOC discussion is cool. That in mind...

What are your unpopular superhero/superhero media opinions?

For instance, considering what's been said in this thread... I didn't think The Suicide Squad was that great. 6/10-ish. It's a vast improvement over the original of course, but from the hype I was expecting something mindblowing, instead I got something that felt like a low to mid MCU outing.

I am not too sure if I would have anything I would consider particularly unpopular for an opinion. I guess the closest I could think of is I think I am quite easily entertained by comic book media and so pretty much find myself liking everything that comes out of the MCU or DC, or the animated side of things. I even enjoyed the CW shows when I still watched them regularly. I don't think I could point to any comic book media that I 'disliked' or that I would complain about particularly.

1) Incredible Hulk is under rated and under appreciated within the MCU and is one of the best films within the MCU and I still stand that for a solo film it has one of the best, if no the best, final fight.

2) Endgame was overrated. I know a lot of people are like boo you just didn't like how Hulk was portrayed and that's right. More importantly I felt like it suffered from some real pacing issues, I understand why everything is in it and I wouldn't know what to cut, I just feel like it doesn't work.

I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, I find Ben Affleck to be a highly overrated Batman. But my issue with the casting has always been that I think they made a mistake by casting a well known, well established actor to play the role. When Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale were all cast, they had maybe one or two notable hits if that. Their careers were in their infancy compared to their post-Batman notoriety. Affleck had a whole ass career of ups and downs and was a known celebrity, so it was hard to really buy him as the character without just seeing Ben Affleck in a tuxedo/batsuit.

Which is interesting, because Robert Pattinson is similarly more established at this point than those aforementioned actors. But I also think he's more of a chameleon type of actor, so he may pull it off. I don't know.

Point being, the only Batman that really counts is Kevin Conroy.

Affleck is my favourite Batman to date and the only one in my eyes who has convincingly pulled off both Batman and Bruce Wayne, rather than excelling as one and disappointing as the other.

My other unpopular opinions are: BvS was a good movie with cinematography that had me staring in wonder at shots that were straight-up comic panels and editing that had me going ‘oh shit we just flat-out finished an issue and here’s the next one’ and I haven’t seen another comic-book movie that so effectively captured the feel of a comic book.

Also I don’t like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn but I categorically could not tell you why. The portrayal has never sat right with me and has always felt a little off and three movies later I still haven’t pinned it down.

Mystery Men is a top-ten superhero movie. We wouldn't have a Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy without it.

1) The MCU version of Spider Man is a sick bastardization of the character. The recent movies have irrevocably glued his ass to Tony Stark and where he is right now has made him considerably unrecognizable from the grounded failings that most media depictions (including Marc Webb's) of Spider Man have done. Homecoming is by far the better of the two movies we got. Peter's been essentially transformed into a trust fund kid who has the resources of a billionaire company by his side and faces no financial or (consequential) social issues in the movies thus far. I feel like I can only relate to Peter on a superficial level in his more recent live action outings rather than on a deeper level.

2) Justice League: Dark Apokolips War is literally the shittiest crossover animation movie and manages to out-snyder Zack Snyder in terms of dreary grimdark crap.

3) Unbreakable = Best Live Action Superhero Movie Ever

4) Snyder's Watchmen isn't that bad. It's watchable and hell of a lot more better than the other pieces of Watchmen media out there (Looking at you, Doomsday Clock).

5) Injustice and everything related to it is the worst thing to happen to Superman, other than Man of Steel, and its popularization of Evil Superman into cultural consciousness is the most stupidest thing ever.

That's pretty much it.

The Watchmen show on HBO is easily the best piece of Watchmen material since the original graphic novel. It really understood the characters and did a lot to advance and add to their narratives. The plot kind of got away from it by the end, but 90% of it was some good shit.

The Watchmen show on HBO is easily the best piece of Watchmen material since the original graphic novel. It really understood the characters and did a lot to advance and add to their narratives. The plot kind of got away from it by the end, but 90% of it was some good shit.


Plus, it gave us this glorious chad.

1) Avengers 1 is the worst movie in the MCU, Whedon's a hack and he only got lucky that Ultron got so much fucking better with time because of references in the later movies.
2) Iron Man 2 and 3 are both movies that are perfectly fine.
3) I agree with Roman's take on Batfleck. Best Batman, worst movies.
4) Young Justice is better than every other superhero TV-show or movie, animated or otherwise.

7) I am incredibly fucking hungover.

I have heard quite a few different explanations for that scene where some people say that she was referring to her entire past with that comment not just specifically that. Although I have to say a few years ago I would be much more inclined to give benefit of the doubt. With the stuff that has come out about Joss Whedon over the past year or 2 I am much more sus of that scene. I think rewatching anything Joss Whedon has quite awkward moments now adays, at least for me.

The Avengers has probably aged the most poorly of the MCU, in that it was great when it came out and now is kind of a chore to get through because you more easily recognize the lack of overall big budget directing experience that Whedon possesses. Jon Faverau or Joe Johnston would have done a better job.

As far as any controversial opinions that I have about the MCU, I think Doctor Strange's solo movie gets a unnessescary flack. It made me care about the character and his world for perhaps the first time, and I think had there been more scenes with the villain to flesh him out a bit, it would be among my favorites of the series. As it stands, even, it kind of is.

I also think Thor: Ragnarok is severely overrated. Love Taika, but he really went out of his way to make a more fan-fictiony movie than a Thor movie good on it's own merits. Thor's best movie appearances are easily Infinity War/Endgame for me, with the first Thor tailing distantly behind. Those movies seemed to get what works about him, and Ragnarok feels like it's about this entirely other thing that I care less about.
