Hello there. I'm new to these forums, but I'm an active RPer. This sort of RP seems to be in line with what I like in an RP, per my introduction - mainly, a focus on worldbuilding.

I do have a question. If we're looking at the 12th century as a general base, why the ban on guns in particular? They didn't invalidate things like bows or armor (steel plate armor as we know it came in at about the early 13th century, after firearms, and was tested for strength by shooting.) Their main advantage at that point was ease of use - gunners were less effective than trained bowmen, but it was much easier to teach someone how to load and point a gun than to train them on archery.

Not that I'd argue about it if you just prefer no guns. It seemed like a very specific ban to me, considering that the deadlier, armor-piercing arbalests would presumably be allowed.

@InsertANameHere I think just about everyone in the RP knows that. I also think the general idea is to keep a standard medieval/D&D fantasy-esque feel and while you can argue guns are medieval, for roleplaying they just open up a whole can of worms and have a 50/50 shot of introducing gunpowder dick measuring contests. With strictly medieval level tech things are more "even".

There's also the issue of magic in that magic can do what guns irl can. Want to instantly kill that armored knight? Fire balls work just as well as musket balls.

@ClocktowerEchos Well, that'd technically be better than musket balls can - medieval guns were ineffective against knights. Though, an arbalestier would likely take much less training than a mage to be similarly lethal against armor. I think it's interesting to consider how many resources a society would want to invest in training a mage, when compared to the value derived and the opportunity cost.

But I understand you. I personally haven't experienced the dick measuring contests, but then, I haven't played any fantasy RPs that had significant presence of firearms. You have much more faith than I would in the general knowledge of firearms - given that history, especially military history, is a major interest of mine, I've found it pretty shocking how many people believe that firearms were the harbingers of the end of the medieval period, when they were around for centuries before the armored knights iconic of the period.

I'm sorry if I came off as argumentative. That wasn't my intention. I'd still be potentially interested in participating. I just didn't know if the ban on firearms was a power consideration, or a stylistic choice. (I've always thought it'd be interesting to explore some of the other ramifications of firearms when magic is a factor - like how summoning rain or drenching the opposition would render them useless, or a single fireball could blow up an entire formation - but I'll have other opportunities.)

There's this taboo of guns in fantasy, even simple true-to-period handgonnes and primitive cannons. I've seen plenty of kneejerk "GUNS? In my fantasy??" reactions to believe there's some deep aversion to the idea.

Depending on the setting this might make sense - the existence of magic can make other technologies moot. Technology may have developed differently in a fictional, magical setting. You could also argue it's a matter of stylistic choice. Maybe authors would rather have heroes swing magic swords in tense battles than simply shooting down the bad guys.

It's just one of those controversial fantasy things, like GMs disallowing monks at their D&D tables.

@Slamurai I wouldn't say that magic makes guns redundant. I think that results from a bit of a misconception - the idea that guns were significantly more powerful than other weapons of the time. In many universes, magic is an elite field. Guns, by contrast, were designed for the exact opposite purpose - they were a weapon that was generally cheaper than higher-end crossbows, while requiring none of the training a bow required. Guns wouldn't have proliferated at all initially if it weren't for their ease of use, because a trained bowman was better in almost every way that mattered at the time (the biggest ones being reliability, rate of fire, and accuracy at range), especially when it came to the much more frequent smaller skirmishes in comparison to bigger battles. A gun would be something you'd more likely see in the hands of a redshirt than in the hands of a hero - beyond all the other issues they had, having to take half a minute to reload between each shot wouldn't make for particularly gripping action scenes.

Like I said, though, I accept it, and I'm still interested in joining (I'm actually typing up a nation draft right now). I just had to talk about that particular detail - magic would make bows redundant if we're considering purely destructive capability.

...on that note, is black powder allowed, when not used with guns? Or would explosions be limited to magical means?

Not sure if there's a taboo against posting this before waiting for another post. I wanted this on its own post instead of being appended to something else, however. How did I do? What do you think of the concept? (I plan to expand on this later, but I have to be up in 5 hours.)

On the one hand, it's an aesthetic thing. I'll be frank with you: I want this to be Lord of the Rings, the Eragon series, D&D. Even knowing that guns and gun-like instruments have been around nearly as long as gunpowder itself, it would just mess up the feel that I'm going for.

Secondly, it's a slippery slope. Imagine that a guy who doesn't know the history very well sees that we have guns, and can't distinguish between the medieval versions and their deadlier counterparts that came centuries later. He'll either be angry because he believes that swords and bows are now obsolete in the RP, or he'll overestimate how much his gun-wielding troops can do. You must always remember that we aren't history professors here, but players of a game. Most players aren't going to start researching the history of firearms, and I would hardly want them to. So it's better if guns are just... not present.

It's bad on both accounts.

(That said, no taboo on posting your WIP before waiting on me. It's coolio, yo. I've been held up a bit lately)

@Everyone,

I'm now preparing the OOC. As mentioned, that and reviews on your WIPs will be made later this evening. Thanks, grazie, etc.
