the new coin pokemon looks like a reddit avatar character

doesn't help its case that the name corruption ("gimmighoul" -> "gimme/give me gold") can be alluded to reddit gold, either

BTW for those who care, Overwatch 2 has an ongoing promotion where you buy certain Butterfinger or other products (if I remember correctly, 100 Grand, Crunch and maybe Baby Ruth are also being promoted as part of the offer) to get free sprays, icons and stuff. The products aren't marked themselves so you'll have to look up the list of what items are exactly for the promotion. There's 3 items to get in total, each one requires 2 bars or 1 bag per purchase. I think you only can do one item per submitted receipt, though. Not certain buying more than 2 bars or 1 bag at a time would count.

Feelings of "Grime" thus far:

Pros
  • I don't know if I like the art direction and atmosphere more than Blasphemous. But it's certainly an interesting looking world from what I've seen thus far. (Has a lot of visual spectacle in the background.)
  • The parry-focused combat system makes this feel unique. (Though it's certainly harder to get used to, versus other metroidvanias I've played.)
  • Bosses are challenging, but fair. And they're more than "it has big health bar". (Looking at you Ender Lilies.) Even if I swear they're suicidal and keep dying before it feels like I've finished them off.

Mixed
  • Soundtrack doesn't stand out or impress thus far. It's not something that I've paid much mind to. For better or worse. (Sound effects and sound impact are fine however.)
  • The RPG stats, upgrades and consumables. (It's not something you get tutorials for. But it's good for progression, that you will continue to get better overall. So it's less likely that you'll feel trapped somewhere. When you can farm money easily, upgrade yourself and your gear. Etc etc.) But it also seems to encourage grinding mobs, and most of their dropped consumable items have yet to be used once. So while there's plenty of options available, it doesn't feel as streamlined or varied as other games systems.
  • Surprisingly linear for a metroidvania. It's not "bad" per say, and the level design is decent/straightforward. With a few hidden paths here and there. But the "where the fuck am I" feelings of wonder and being lost are fairly absent here.

Cons
  • Needing to find an obscure and far off 'beacon room' to unlock visual sections of the map. (Plus, the map has not been particularly useful. Like I said, game's been mostly linear.)
  • Movement Upgrades/Backtracking (You, apparently, don't get any movement upgrades until the near end of the game.) So with few and sparse checkpoints, get ready to do a lot of walking and backtracking when things go awry. So while I don't *need* a fast travel system, like I've seen many complain about this game's lack thereof. Its lack of movement upgrades, thus far, feel like a mistake in this genre.
  • Fall damage. Fuck fall damage. It's a cheap and lazy way to keep the player from going where you don't want them to go. Not once have I fallen and went...yep, that seemed fair.

Reoccurring Bugs
  • Some enemy AI goes braindead, if you leave it behind and come back. (Some enemies do not handle the backtracking that's almost expected of you. So you'll enter a room where people throw spears at you from on high. Where you can avoid dealing with themβ€”come backβ€”and they'll no longer be hostile enemy AI.
  • Teleporting character in platforming sections. (Seems like an FPS problem.)
  • Panning camera bugs (Less frequent, but self-explanatory. Similar to Zapling Bygone's camera issues.)

So, all in all, I'm enjoying my time with it and I'm going to play more tomorrow. (Though the announced DLC for the game was delayed. And I can only imagine that it's partially due to the still-present bugs.)

I seem to keep avoiding purchasing games that turn into controversy landmines. I.E: Disco Communism's developers being pushed out of the company for their 'toxic/harassing behavior'. Or this current Doom Eternal/Bethesda thing, with them not fully paying the guy that made their soundtrack.

And speaking of avoiding purchasing something. GameFreak needs to stop pushing out clearly unfinished sh*t (that gets defended by its fans anyway) at some point, right?

Fire Emblem Echoes has some of the worst map design they could have possibly conceived. I'm well aware they're just Gaiden maps, but consisering FE:E has so many baller mechanics and gameplay improvements, it boggles the mind the maps are still like this. This game is bogged down so hard by this achilles heel. It's sad as there's a lot to like, but I liiquid cannot with these maps.

Been playing Cyberpunk 2077 recently, overall I am definitely going to ditch my Ps4 for a Ps5 to play it on for future updates as the updates are being discontinued on old gen consoles. Anyhow, I'm enjoying the story so far, I chose the Streetkid lifepath to begin with as it was the one I saw heavily advertised. I'll be totally honest, I didn't expect it to get as dark as it has but I like that it is. Sometimes it's good to really feel how awful the world and it's inhabitants are.

However I've seen a trend on Reddit (yeah, yeah I know what you're thinking) about how heavily the sex was advertised and how little the game actually explicitly uses it. Like for god sakes why give me a choice to have a dick? Wth was that for? But no my actual complaint is about Braindance, because it's absolutely EVERYWHERE in the game but never utilized outside of the story which I feel is a missed opportunity.

Anyhow, loving it still. Gonna kill me some Cyberpsychos.

Modded my old DSi from when I was a kid so I can play basically any DS game + some more (SNES, for example) via a SD card. Been playing a few DS era games right now that sounded interesting to play off the Wikipedia list of DS games, but let me tell ya, there's certainly quite a bit of garbage out there.

I'd prefer you play the updated rereleases, but failing that, play the two Devil Survivor games anyway. Criminally underplayed.

Nearly everything on my Steam wishlist is on sale. But I don't want to spend any more money. Yet I am unlikely to resist such a temptation. ;-;

Grime continues to have little bright spots that make me endure the frustrating moments. But I've died more from bugs in these terrible platforming sections, than I've lost to bosses (the actual challenge/fun part of the game). So I have a feeling that I'll put this a tier below Blasphemous, when all is said and done. We'll see...

Trying to egg breed for a shiny in the older Pokemon games is a pain in the ass. I could do some RNG manipulation but that's a lot of work trying to find out my secret ID and other stuff required to properly time the RNG for a shiny right. I guess for now I'm stuck with hundreds of Lapras just sitting in my boxes. At least we can say Lapras won't be lorewise near-extinct by this point

I spent more money on DLC’s this sale than games. (Everything I bought on sale at that.)

The new Pokemon game is fun.

The new Pokemon game has performance issues.

Both of these can be true statements.

To save me (and you the reader) some time with a long-winded rant.

Completed Grime, and I'll give it a conflicted '7 out of 10'. Fuck absolutely everything past the 2nd to last boss.

(I'd happily play a theoretical Grime 2. A more polished and less bloated version, that focuses on the game's highs and improves upon its easily-improvable shortcomings.)

Anyway, taking a much needed Metroidvania break and giving "The Case of the Golden Idol" a shot.

Please be good. Please be good. Please be good.

Edit: It's not 'Return of the Obra Dinn' amazing. Since I don't think its story concluded in a very engaging way. But 'The Case of the Golden Idol' was a pretty challenging game for the most part, and it kept me engaged enough to finish it. (Being fair in most places with its logic, and easy enough to understand.) So we'll see how the next detective game I'm playing will be in comparison...

A 15 year old kid being able to just walk up on stage with the Elden Ring devs and hijack the show at the end is fucking hilarious.

Game (okay all) Journalism summed up with The Escapist article that I stumbled across.

Headline: "The Guy Who Disrupted The Game Awards Has Been Arrested!"
Last Line: "Well looks like he won't be laughing now. Because he's been thrown in prison!" Smug smug
Update in less than a day of publishing: "He has not been arrested."

Fucking embarrassing as always, guys.

And somehow, the second article might even be worse. (I.E "Good news fellow crybabies, it turns out that the kid is only a prankster. No shit. And said that he really likes the same people we like, to the very people who would and already did assume the very worst about him, if he didn't. So riots and pitchforks down folks. We have other children to actively root for their imprisonment instead.")

One day self-awareness will hit you, but that day is not today.

To be fair, Geoff himself literally said the kid had been arrested and offered no further context or explanation. And technically he was arrested he was just not imprisoned or held beyond questioning. And also arrested sounds cooler than detained.

Either way it's still fucking hilarious that two different but also boring and lameass awards shows in the same calendar year has the only takeaway being "Will Smith slapped Chris Rock" and "A fifteen year old kid trolled a show where literally one of the celebrities was like on acid"

Finally, video games and movies are on the same page. Truly video games are finally art.

Divine Knockout is free to keep on Steam as long as you get it before tomorrow; ends around noonish US time zones then. I think it ends at 10am PST, would need to look again to verify.

Darkside Detective can be occasionally amusing. But there's no challenge. Nor deduction. It's a typical bad kind of point-and-click adventure. Where solutions don't always make sense, and it actually keeps you from progressing through it for arbitrary reasons. There's more "bonus cases", and I can't say I'm even engaged enough to do them.

I got Gotham Knights for 40 dollars (down from 90) and while I can understand why people would be turned off by the gameplay loop, it resonates with me as someone who enjoys the ability to play as Batgirl for like a couple hours, punch out dudes, and get shiny items to make number go up. I am a simple person.
