The capital had been well and truly ravaged by the assault. Military vehicles rolled down the battered streets carrying men and supplies, tossing up dust in the faces of the civilians trying to rebuild and the lonely conscripts patrolling the streets. The battle was over, but command was not taking any chances; anyone not counted among the casualties was to recon the area, account for any missing in action, and most importantly sweep the area for any leftover PRC invaders. By midday, three prisoners had already been taken. One had died before medical treatment could be given. Two were caught in the act of setting land mines and were killed in action. One poor soul ran afoul of the locals before he could be captured. Best not to dwell on what happened to him.

Moreso then rubble or blood, anger seemed to run through the ruined streets. Not furious and shouting, but quiet, brooding. Threatening to explode out at any moment. It was the sort of feeling Marlena was far too familiar with, and perhaps why she had eyes for the buildings instead.

Pausing to give her men a break and let the recon look around from atop a nearby roof, Marlena cast her eyes up at the building across the street, her head tilting to one side. The old stone capitol was still intact enough for her to recognize it; the Casa Real, once the seat of power in this region when the Spanish ruled from across two oceans. Even if it was far more modern then what she usually found interest in, it made her heart ache all the same to see such a place reduced to this. Two generations of history, nearly wiped out in a senseless burst of destruction. Where was the glory in this?

The recon grunted as he jumped down from his perch, giving a thumbs up to indicate there was nothing to report. Marlena nodded in approval and gestured onwards with a snap of her fingers, leading the conscripts deeper into the city, where the destruction and the civilian population was denser. Her boots crunching on broken glass, she felt a tap on her shoulder as one of the conscripts gestured ahead of the group. A small mob seemed to have gathered around a storefront, suffering way more damage then would have been expected from the attack, the broken signage translated into spanish and mandarin. Marlena frowned, seeing raised fists even from this distance and more debris flying out at the storefront. The bitter feeling in the pit of her stomach told her this was exactly what it seemed to be.

Stretching out a hand in preparation for a quick summoning of her arm, Marlena shot ahead of her team, getting a better look at the gathering mob, faces contorted in fury. Running ahead of it was a balding Chinese man, ducking as a glass bottle shattered just over his head as he placed himself in front of the door. Marlena didn't even stop to give an order or direction, roughly pushing her way through the mob as a young man rushed forward. She spotted something silver glint in his hand, the sudden look of fear in the shopkeeper's eyes, matched by the small faces visible through the door behind him.

Marlena felt the sting of the cheap shiv as it jabbed her in the side, barely inches from its intended target. The young man turned ghostly pale as he glanced up at her, buckling under Marlena's piercing gaze. She didn't need her weapon. She didn't even need to raise a fist. The message was made perfectly clear as he frantically scrambled away, the bloody knife clattering to the ground haplessly. The other soldiers would shout a few orders to disperse the rest of the mob, if they hadn't already slunk away in shame.

Turning around, she saw the children still standing by the window, looking amazed and excited by what happened, not knowing the cruel truth of what had nearly happened. Marlena gave them a bright smile in response.

A little less hate. And maybe, God willing, just a little more hope.

Municipality of Lingayen - 9/30/2022, 8:17 UTC+8

As a War Correspondent, Ayahime arrived at the Municipality of Lingayen seventeen minutes after the fighting had stopped. Ayahime had a 14-hour, 52-minute flight from Sacramento, California, to Lingayen, Philippines, but she had to divert her flight somewhat because of Chinese Aggression in the region. She officially arrived by car at the Municipality of Lingayen, safe enough that she drove herself since the news waited for no one. It didn't help that Ayahime had jet lag from the long trip, and having her flight diverted slightly from going straight to Lingayen, Philippines, was a pain. 'Christ, this place was turned into a wreck by the Chinese. Oh god, that must have been some battle. Too bad I was late in getting here to see it.' Ayahime thought to herself, with one of those looks of war is so much different when looked up close. She did go through War Correspondent training to understand the pros and cons of being one.

Ayahime parks her car nearish to what would seem like a good parking spot and gets out Sony A7 IV, Camera, which is the best identifier of being a War Correspondent, Freelance Journalist. She places her Sony A7 IV Camera around her neck, holds it carefully, and tries to figure out what to do since the buildings in this city are slightly damaged from the fighting. 'Hopefully, no one will notice me.' Ayahime thought to herself while walking towards the Sison Auditorium.

Ayahime got her camera off her neck and started taking pictures of the surrounding buildings that did have damage in Lingayen, Pangasinan. She was too engrossed in taking photographs as she walked down the street towards the Sison Auditorium. However, Ayahime did remember that she needed to report to the highest-ranking military officer in the region. Thankfully, she called where she got her War Correspondent Credentials to learn where the allied army locations were in the war-torn areas of the Phillippines, Vietnam, etc. since previous War Correspondents did return to the United States. '96-year-old buildings being converted into military barracks is depressing, but war changes places.' Ayahime thought as she walked and stopped on the street with the large building behind her. She sighed slightly, looked behind her, and took a picture of the Sison Auditorium. After taking the picture, Ayahime placed her camera back around her neck.

And it didn't take very long until they encountered what their captain had been warning them about: mobs of vengeful citizens on Chinese innocents. The pilots noticed the commotion outside the store that had been battered, almost destroyed by the bombing run a few days earlier, now also vandalized with various degree of damage. A broken signage in mandarin told them pretty much all they needed to know. While the others attempted to ignore the commotion, the only blonde man in the group walked forward quietly but very firmly, as if a spirit had possessed him. And his partner, upon seeing him going, decided to follow along into the fray.

And there, they witnessed a Chinese man, bloodied and with terror in his eyes as he ran out to the door, pursued by a rough-looking man with a knife in his hand. But that was intercepted by a tall lady in uniforms, as she stared him down into defusion. However, it did not escape the pilots what that man did to her, so when the man was trying to run away in fear, he found himself being dragged back in the collar by the Russian.

"Oh no no, you don't get to walk away after that." Nikolay angrily declared as he pulled the man back, giving the man another staredown. "You better prepare to rot in jail you pig."

"Stand down Lieutenant. We don't have jurisdiction." His partner addressed him sternly, but took the man and handed him over to one of the soldiers standing around. The others were trying to gather up the others, grouping them with the mob to be dispersed, but Cuong stood firm.

"Vietnam's People Air Force." He stated, looking over to the tall lady who just stopped this whole mess, and down at the bloody knife. "Are you alright, ma'am? We can take you to our airbase."

Foreshadowing Post (Relevant for the Next Mission)

Mischief Reef, Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone, South China Sea

To some, the morning of the Lingayen invasion was little different from any other. The Chinese garrison stationed on the artificial atoll of Mischief Reef was on guard, as it had been for months. Important officers and Arms Masters had come and gone over time, and now, they were all gone. It was as good a reason as any to stay on alert.

What eventually disturbed the garrison was not a discovery made by their air patrol or guard towers. A patrol boat picked up an abnormality on sonar. The radio communications were quiet and confused at first: this wasn’t a submarine and wasn’t a person. It was like - a huge bubble of some kind?

Then the boat stopped responding to questions. As if to fill the silence, Command started shouting. Arms Master - there’s an Arms Master approaching. It was foolish to assume anything less than the worst when faced with this kind of anomaly. Naval vessels were ordered to stay clear, and instructed that they would be attacked if they approached without immediate ID. Men were ordered to watch the direction of the vanished vessel, eyes were strained to the waves, and the onsite sonar system was studied with utmost care.

There it is. That bubble - it’s getting closer.
And then it was gone. Everything was gone. The sonar went blind.

The officers raced in circles, communicating in hurried Mandarin with mainland command. The patrol boats held their position in frightened silence. The soldiers of Mischief Reef checked their weapons and held their breath. Minutes passed.

A space began to open between the ocean and the shore. Emerging from the space - a chariot cavalry charge.

“Terracotta!” screamed a sergeant. “Xian Zhou!”

“QRS!” translated the commanding officers on their mainland line. “Xian Zhou is attacking!”

Horses wrought from clay crested the shore, some pulling clay chariots loaded with clay soldiers, their very real rifles barking and blazing at the Chinese forces. The battle was harried, disorganized, breathless, and embarrassingly quick - nothing so much like the reckless and bloody cavalry charges of movies, rather than the distant and careful engagements of modern conventional warfare. The army of terracotta swarmed over the beach ignorant of their own casualties, seeking only the blood of their enemies until the gunshots slowed to a stop.

Three humans, flanked and followed by hundreds of clay men on foot, emerged from the waves and looked over a scene of carnage. A whispered conversation passed among them, then, at a word from a young white-haired boy, the soldiers fanned out and began picking through the bodies. Wherever they found a man still living, they stopped and stood over them, rifles raised and aimed.

The last word the mainland received from Mischief Reef was that it was lost. Then there was shouting, directed elsewhere - two final, ominously close shots came through - and silence.

A younger boy, whose black hair almost looked blue thanks to the light reflected from the silks he was wearing, then stepped forward, accompanied by a larger, more muscled figure who had already unfurled a golden spiked banner.

“We’ve seized the reef while the communists are busy with their invasion,” the smaller figure said. “Have our prisoners interrogated as to the location of the usurpers’ navies in the region; to prove our usefulness to our allies, we’re hitting them with tsunamis over the next seven hours while Ren Zhao protects us from their ballistic missiles. But first...”

Another banner was raised over the base, the banner of the House of Aisin Goro, better known as the Qing Dynasty of China. In this one small corner of the territory, the Chinese Monarchy had been restored.

More men in uniform were a welcome sight. Especially in those pilot uniforms. Angry people seldom think logically, and a part of Marlena worried that an angry mob would have been less likely to listen to a band of multinational soldiers like hers. Going by their specific garb they looked like pilots, in fact.

"Vietnam's People Air Force," one of the men stated, confirming her theory as he looked over her, eyes lingering on the wound in her side. "Are you alright, ma'am? We can take you to our airbase."

Her men chuckled slightly as Marlena smiled in appreciation. <"It's not necessary, but thank you."> she signed at the two men, making sure one of her number was watching.

"It's not necessary, but thank you," one of the soldiers translated. "She heals quick anyway."

"Ja, she is one of the, ah, der Edelwaffen?" The soldier snapped his fingers as he tried to think of the word.

"Noble Arm."

"Ja, Noble Arm!" the German soldier said proudly. To demonstrate, Marlena held her arms out and drew on her powers a bit, causing a slight rain despite the clear skies overhead. Afterwards, she signed again before giving a proud salute.

"Sgt. Marlena Dorn, Wachturm," the German soldier translated for the two pilots.

"We're Laeleps right now, special assignment," a man in the back corrected.

Mission Two: Siege of Mischief Reef

Municipality of Lingayen - 10/11/2022, 6:00 UTC+8

Nemo had disappeared along with several other volunteers shortly after all rumors of Alan Turing not being dead and also being the First Arms Master had faded, leaving First Lieutenant Noel Alonso in a bad mood even as he called the remaining members of Task Force Obsidian (plus Lotus Squadron, plus Ayahime, their attached war correspondent) to the Auditorium's audience hall to relay the orders of the Government of National Salvation and its partners in the rest of ASEAN. Once they had all gathered, Noel signaled for the projector to be turned on, as he began to speak into the microphone to reveal their next mission.

"People," Noel said as the screen showed a large, circular island, "Even with America still sleeping, our cause has received an unlooked-for reprieve."

He then gestured to the screen and said, "Mischief Reef, also known as Panganiban Reef and Đá Vành Khăn, was the largest enemy military base in the South China/West Philippine Sea until a rogue group of... Cosplayers known as the 'Qing Restoration Society', led by Jin Li of the Aisin Goro Clan, the Clan that was the historical Qing Dynasty, took over the atoll in a surprise attack. They have since proposed an alliance with ASEAN in which in exchange for supplies, the QRS will provide a buffer and auxiliaries in our fight against the PRC invasion. One of which, the defector Lei Qingshe, has been 'sent early' to us - You yourselves saw how she has proven to be of immense help repulsing the Chinese from Lingayen last month."

After revealing the backgrund of Qingshe's defection, First Lieutenant Noel then warmed up to the topic, "The QRS have fulfilled their end of the bargain in more ways than one; Jin Li has a hydrokinetic Noble Arm that has devastated Chinese positions and flotillas in the South China Sea with localized tsunamis, while Ren Zhao, Ren Huo's brother who is jealous of the latter's position in the Zodiac, has a Noble Arm that causes all projectiles, including ballistic missiles, to veer away, slow down, or otherwise miss. Its weakness, however, is that it does not affect chemical or incendiary weapons or even just large quantities of water and sand being dropped on them, nor does it deter lasers or energy or mental-based attacks, and definitely not melee weapons. All obvious flaws that need us to cover for them.

"Anyway, the Philippine Government of National Salvation and Indonesia are joining forces to relieve the blockade and siege of Mischief Reef," Noel said, "We will be committing a large portion of our navies, already weak against what the Chinese have, in this expedition, and Task Force Obsidian will all go inside the BRP Jose Rizal, our flagship. They will be escorted by Lotus Squadron, which will be temporarily moved to Antonio Bautista Air Base in Palawan Island to the west of the Philippine Archipelago to clear the skies and herald our arrival."

He then faced them all, saying, "Task Force Obsidian is not normally equipped for naval combat, and we will be at a marked disadvantage in transit whether we fly by air or by land. Thankfully, we have Specialist Callie Lindmann and her Noble Arm, Charter, to give us an advantage - It can allow our more melee-minded folk to portal to and from enemy ships at will." Then he sighed and said, "You have twelve hours to prepare."

Then he faced Kaitlyn and said, "You and Private Calvert - Hannie - are to stay onboard the ship once you embark in order to assist the medical teams. With Nemo gone, I'm not risking our youngest member's life and well-being." Then to everyone else, "As for the rest of you, ask your questions, get some answers, then you're dismissed."

Well, she was thankful he was keeping to his word- not that she thought he'd go back on it! Hannie would be safe aboard the ship, and she...

She imagines a miniature sun, searing the ship in half. Blood and screams...

don't think...

Breathing out, she digs into her pockets for chocolate, searching the room for her unofficial charge.

"Yes, sir!" She says, somewhat absently. Will the rest of her squad also be present? Will Miss Lei?

Audience Hall, Sison Auditorium, Municipality of Lingayen - 10/11/2022, 6:04 UTC+8

Fiddling with a personally cut diamond, just a portion of her spoils from looting the remains of Tian Fei's temper tantrum, Qingshe observed the ongoing briefing while lounged leisurely upon a seating of her own making in the auditorium's audience hall, plush green cushions and armrests a sight for sore eyes among a sea of clinical, mass-produced seating options. Her shadow, from which the seat protruded, ebbed around the hem of her dress that still brushed the floor.

The newly-promoted First Lieutenant was clearly agitated, and the reason wasn't too hard to guess, even if the results were a bit irksome. Once the battle had concluded, many of the volunteer Arms Masters had drifted away, some helping with the rebuilding efforts and others merely taking a share of the obsidian and diamond mined from the volcano and making good on their escape while they could. Still others had probably been merely recalled by their respective governments, now that the worst of the crisis for their ally of interest was passed. And still others... Well, that was something only Alan Turing probably knew.

For her own part, Qingshe would admit to a touch of idle curiosity about Alan Turing. Personally, she didn't believe he was the first Arms Master... just the first one publicly recorded. That was all, nothing special. That his abilities apparently allowed him to maintain his life well after a century was interesting... but ultimately nothing unique either. After all, she could do that too in her own way, and frankly? She wasn't in a rush. 'Slow and steady wins the race' as they say. She had plenty of time to cross paths with the enigma again in the future, and she wasn't missing much by turning down the opportunity now. Besides, "PR" was more important. Going after him might mean neglecting her healing efforts, and she was better off cultivating social capital at this stage.

Which is all to say that she was certain Noel didn't exactly share those sentiments, mortal as his own lifespan was and having apparently failed to accomplish the directive of his superiors. Honestly though... what were they hoping to achieve with vague instructions like that? Negotiate? Negotiate what, exactly? With what leverage? No-one really understood what Alan Turing's motivations were in this day and age. He was a mystery they couldn't hope to approach with a perfect offer from the word "go". Honestly, it was an unreasonable request to negotiate with him, and Qingshe certainly wouldn't have blamed a subordinate of her own for doing nothing. And she didn't think Noel really needed to be so worked up about this right now.

Especially when that emotionally compromised state wasn't exactly making him put her affiliation in the best light.

Honestly, how was she supposed to react to him just blaring her allegiance to all and sundry. Wasn't that supposed to be relatively need-to-know? At the least, she'd have preferred to not broadcast it pointlessly, especially when he was broadly referring to the QRS as a bunch of "cosplayers"... She smirked. What a... novel and undiplomatic way to refer to someone you were ostensibly supposed to be putting in a positive enough light to go rescue. Did he forget she -their representative- was here? Clearly not. He'd just made a show of spotlighting her role. She wondered what Jin Li's reaction would be to the descriptors being used here in her report.

She was sure it would be mildly amusing... and Zhao's even more so.

Still, she held her tongue, as the briefing continued apace, quietly panning her slitted gaze across the room's occupants on occasion, trying to get a sense of the general reaction to this plan. Overall, it seemed... fairly tepid so far, which was better than some other reactions she could name. She doubted most anyone here was in any particular hurry to help even more strangers, and ones who weren't even getting advertised well at that... Hell, even she wasn't exempt from apathy. In a sense, she couldn't say she particularly cared about the QRS as an entity or their established goals... but they paid the bills, provided her legitimacy -of a sort- and were frankly better than the current Chinese administration by leaps and bounds... Not that the latter was much of a high bar to clear these days.

"Anyway, the Philippine Government of National Salvation and Indonesia are joining forces to relieve the blockade and siege of Mischief Reef," Noel said,

Mother of Einstein, she still cringed -if only internally- whenever she heard someone use that name. She didn't know who was responsible for coining it off the top of her head, but she did know that if she'd had any say at the time, she'd probably have had them shot... or something. What an embarrassment. It was a wonder anyone took the Philippines seriously on a national scale these days with an arrogant name like that. Frankly speaking, in hindsight, she'd take being referred to as a "cosplayer" over being thought to have her head so far up her ass she could smell her own self-righteousness. Though... she supposed there was something to being underestimated. Unfortunately, she didn't think whoever was responsible for that abomination was thinking that far ahead, even if the possibility existed that their ridiculous name contributed to China not quite taking them seriously enough to successfully invade.

...But she was letting old, petty irritants run away from her. Shaking her head, Qingshe refocused on the actual strategic portion of the meeting. It seemed to be mostly bog-standard stuff, but... several potential issues were beginning to glare out at her.

Dropping her diamond into the small puddle of ebbing shadow at her feet in a soundless passage, Qingshe hummed and finally deigned to address the matters of tactics and the future. Since the floor was now apparently being opened to questions, she cleared her throat with a little hum and stood from her chair. Smiling winningly, she wiggled her fingers and spoke up, "If there are to be questions raised, I have several interests of concern, First Lieutenant." Her right hand curled into a fist before protruding a false-clawed pointer finger.

"Firstly, of Lotus Squadron. While their performance has been nothing less than exemplary, should we not expect them to recieve any additional air support? If I recall rightly, the Chinese aircraft carrier made it out safely, and they could quite feasibly have restocked with the right motivation and resources." Her head tilted inquisitively, tucking her left arm under her chest to prop her right elbow atop her cupped left hand. "Unless you mean to tell me we shall only experience conflict within Ren Zhao's barrier, I wouldn't discount the idea of the enemy attacking us long before we can reach that oasis. After all, why allow us to turtle up harder when they can just cut us off at the pass?"

A false-clawed middle finger rose to join the pointer. "Secondly, I am hoping to hear that we have some form of backup plan in case the use of this... 'Charter' is non-viable. Naval combat these days tends to occur at rather unfriendly distances, ones outright beyond the curve of the earth at times, so are you certain Miss Lidmann will be able to handle the strain of such engagements?" She cocked a single brow. "If I don't miss my guess, we'd already have to be in the warship equivalent of knife-fighting range for boarding actions to become practical in such a manner. And on top of that..." A small measure of her perpetual amiability was exchanged for a note of displeasure. "We already know the Chinese can and have engaged in information warfare successfully against your forces... when they were in a far healthier state to ward off spies at that. I do not think it outside the realm of possibility that Miss Lindmann could be a priority target eliminated before we get to use her."

Her piece said, Qingshe retook her seat before adding, "I suppose in summation, my concern is that this plan puts too many eggs in too few baskets." She didn't yet voice it directly, but indeed, she internally considered the idea of relying heavily on this new "Task Force Obsidian" in itself to be one of these overstuffed baskets, even in the face of potential Arms Master opposition.

Well, if you’ve finished trying to push every single one of my buttons… Callie grit her teeth, keeping her expression schooled in the manner of a soldier – not so hard with what military discipline she actually had had drilled into her. Certainly, the rational part of her mind said that the Chinese Arms Master had at least a part of a point – her own capabilities were hardly a plan unto themselves – but the implication behind it was hardly flattering. God. Why the hell would she want to undermine me like that? For a moment, panic at the worst case scenario filled a different corner – that she’d been compromised, exposed, she’d failed somehow without realising it – before she blinked and, in that moment of cool, encompassing darkness, pushed it away.

In any case, there was an easy way to demonstrate her utility, as she needed to if she was to retain influence here. Maybe some are asleep at home but others are certainly awake… Callie checked through one of the small upper windows (the ones that she had scanned a few times now – still no undesired eyes on the meeting), thankful that the weather had held off today and that the sky was relatively clear. She let out a breath, and a little frustration with it, then called her spyglass to her hand. Her other, she raised.

“Private Caroline Lidmann. If I may?” Allowing herself to indulge in a slight flourishing spin of her Arm to soothe herself as she stood, she brought one end up to her eye even as she formed a tiny portal over the other, connecting it to a vantage point several kilometres away through the window, high into the atmosphere.

Her grip, well-practised, adjusted the magnification to plunge her vision into the treeline below.

“About twenty klicks south, there’s a mongoose in a tree branch eight feet off the ground,” Callie announced. “It appears to be munching on an egg.” And power to you, little guy. Poor bird, though. “If I needed to, I could transfer myself or any of us to where I’m looking from, then down to the ground in thirteen seconds or so.” She dismissed the spyglass, folding her arms. “As for intelligence, I can’t say I’m an expert –” she had to fight the part of her mind laughing uproariously at that one – “but I’m capable enough to know how to spot marksmen and other threats when I’m in the field. Wouldn’t be any good at acquiring them myself if I wasn’t.”

With her point made, Callie frowned, the tactical considerations coming back to the fore. “As for planning, I’m told that the best way to beat an enemy’s to make them your friend. The second best is to turn their friends into enemies.”

“I can transport a number of us to seize the bridge of one of their major ships from our own fleet while outside their range. That should allow us to cripple their local command structure, hijack their weapon systems, sow chaos and move on to another ship where we do the same again – give them no time to react or form a coherent defence. This will open a window for the rest of us, and the assault as a whole, to act decisively, though not incautiously.” Callie raised an eyebrow at Qingshe. “No need to put all our faith in a single strike, like you say.”

She looked about her, then turned to Noel. “With your permission, First Lieutenant, and forgive me for not knowing all of our capabilities yet, I’d look to bring with me people who, in sum, can overwhelm a group of mundanes and possibly low-power NAs rapidly, quietly and without collateral damage, have an escape option in case I am compromised somehow and can interface with Chinese naval technology by NA or by mundane means if we have the intelligence to do so. Ideally the team would be small, so filling multiple roles at once would be best.” She placed a hand on her hip, looking to Qingshe once more. “If you ever got to study those systems on a naval exercise or something, now would be the time to say. Or if that green-black manifestation of yours can take control of the weapons directly – run it through the pipework or the like and we may not even have to show our hand.” Despite herself, Callie smirked a touch. “Would hardly mind having you along.”

Hannie takes a moment to process the fact that she'd just been called "Private Calvert," and then quietly but visibly relaxes in her seat. While there's nothing fun about being here at all, what she's getting is that she's staying away from...
...
The images don't come to mind anymore when she calls for them. She's not sure why, but she's not mad.
This will be okay. It'll be like those shows, some tall guy in a mask says "scalpel" and she'll be right there with a scalpel. And she'll save people. Maybe give them lollipops after.
She follows Noel's attention to find Kaitlyn, and gives a little smile when she catches Kaitlyn's eyes already seeking her.

A few hours ago
A dark shape on the horizon soon proves not to be a bird, or a plane. Soldiers at their stations recoil and check their weapons as a woman dives from the sky, wings spread and spear in-hand. She flips herself and slows just short of the ground with a single, heavy wingbeat, and drops on her feet. She greets the men with a smile, going for a breast pocket on her tiny pink leather jacket.

"Halt," says one, stepping forward. "Identify yourself."

This proves a touch unnecessary, as the woman extracts and presents an ID card in the middle of his sentence.

"Indra Larsdottir, second lieutenant, B-B-A-B-C-C, just assigned to Obsidian, someone should've told you I was coming. I have no transportation and I'm alone, here's my bag."
She runs down her points quickly and matter-of-factly, in a somewhat dense Swedish accent that doesn't glaze the "i" in lieutenant.

Her wings quiver and wink out together with the spear, and she unstraps a duffelbag from her back. Weapons are lowered a bit. "Valkyrie" doesn't translate in Tagalog, so she knows what one of the men in the back says to the rest, and she flashes a brighter smile at him. Being recognized by strangers is... something she's getting used to, at least. But she didn't think it would happen away from home.

There hasn't been time to make friends yet. Indra, out of her favorite outfit and into something more standard-military - though she got her way with a custom pin depicting spread fluffy silver wings, just under the rank pin - sits anywhere for the briefing, tracking Noel as he addresses his audience, making mental notes of names and faces. After lingering a bit on Lotus Squadron to internalize all of them in one go, she raises an eyebrow at Noel, to find he's already moved on.

She raises her hand. When she gets her turn...
"First Lieutenant, right? Second Lieutenant Larsdottir. We should step aside later to get to know each other, and perhaps discuss where I'm best used."
She lets her hand drop, casting quickly over the audience around her before settling to watch for the reply.
Very stiff. Very professional. Maybe she can be more herself in private.

The vague phrasing of both the woman and her apparent translator were yet to calm the two pilots, until one of the German soldiers mentioned the word Noble Arms. Ah, she was one of those folks. Cuong curled his lips a little, nodding with nothing but impressiveness. He had worked with Noble Arms users before, but he never was tired of seeing them and their powers. Each and everyone of them were so unique and frankly quite cool-looking. It's a shame a lot of them ended up letting that go to their heads. For what it's worth though, Sgt Marlena didn't seem like one of them. She looked like a chill and nice person.

"Senior Lieutenant Cuong Hoang Van." Cuong returned the salute with his own, as he spoke with a clear anglicized pronunciation of his name. Even then it might be a bit hard to pronounce the first time around. "Yeah, you can say it however you feel. No one has really gotten that right." He laughed it off, mainly as a jab towards people who kept insisting on getting names correctly and offered Marlena and the soldiers a handshake.

"Lieutenant Nikolay Phan." The Russian airman, after calming himself down, shadowed his partner.

"His was pretty easy though, just 'Fan'...ya know." Cuong's hand swirled back and forth, imitating a hand fan. After making sure the lads understood his point, he gave them a smile. "Well, I certainly do not want to disturb the special forces on their duty, don't I? But if you're free for some quick snacks, you can find us here. Or visit us at the airbase. Always glad to receive a friend or two."

The pilots glanced over at the owner of the vandalized store, whose confusion was masked behind his tended injuries. For his horrors, he would be treated well with some fancy purchases by the pilots, with good tips to go with it. It spoke much to their hospitality, and to the pilots, it was supposed to be a nice meal of respite before their next mission, and this incident would not affect that mood. They willed it.

Well, their peace and quiet lasted almost two weeks. It was a good run.

It was not because of a mission that got them tepid responses, it was because it was from the so-called 'Task Force Obsidian'. The victory at Lingayen was great, and a perfect demonstrator of how destructive and useful Noble Arm individuals are in combat, but it still wasn't enough to shake off the impression of disorganization that they got from the group. It felt like the high commands really were just putting all the eggs in one basket, poke it with a stick and hoped that it does something.

Lotus Squadron was not technically part of this, but it seemed like the Filipino high commands really found them to be the salvation of the country, so they put as much support as they could around this ragtag group of Noble Arm users. Which is quite ironic due to this government being literally called the Government of National Salvation, and this task force is overwhelmingly foreigners. When that name was mentioned by Noel, the some of the pilots simply turned away or covered their mouth, clearly trying to suppress their laughter. They had heard of this new name for quite a while now, but it still would never be unfunny hearing the mundane Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore right next to the PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL SALVATION. Somehow it actually made this whole QRS being supposed Qing dynasty supporters who wanted to return the days of the Mandates of Heavens seem quite sane in comparison.

Speaking of the QRS and their operations, so it seemed like Obsidian was there to relieve the QRS of their siege, and Lotus was just helping with air combat. The details were pretty vague, and the squadron's personnel's responses were indeed quite lukewarm. Discussions and doubts were raised, and the most concerning one was actually brought up first by Miss Qingshe, the apparent PLA defector and QRS member in the auditorium: there were no mentioning of other squadron support involved.

"Miss Qingshe is right." Nikolay stood up and spoke. "We only have eight aircraft in total. We may be used to fighting outnumbered, but we are not juggernauts."

The squadron was also more capable fighting in a more 'insurgency' doctrine, but that was not too big of a deal to bring up. The more pressing point would be the concern that the high commands were thinking that this supposed ace-squadron was deemed so successful that they thought they could survive without proper support.

"Please tell us that we're not the only squadron in the air." They better hope that Noel had more to say because otherwise this would be a very pitiful display.

Cuong simply let his partner spoke for the squadron, as he eyed other members of the task force in the auditorium. Many of them absurdly young, one of them, Nil, sitting close by him. She looked a bit familiar.

"What's up?" He casually struck up a conversation with her. "Have we met before somewhere?"

Briefings had never been fun, and this one wasn’t much of an exception, bored to no end Nil passed through Noel’s spiel with an impassive face and a couple slight nods, masquerading her internal panic at seeing the next mission would have a lot of water AND sand, she never hated sand but now she worried for some reason… it wasn’t very stable ground.

Apparently they were going on a, mister Jose? ah it’s a ship, Nil wasn’t sure what was worse, being on a boat or staying on a small sandy island, the latter seemed worse given the recent experience. Maybe she’ll just put on the new earmuffs and ignore the briefing for a while, better to make sure they work now than later.

Then a few different people started talking, probably discussing the briefing and other of that stuff, both the ice cream making green woman and the teleporter Callie started talking. It would be interesting to hear what they had to say, what made them worry and what made them tick, but right now Nil preferred to calm down and hey, the earmuffs worked.

More people joined in, everyone bringing in their fashion and mannerisms, or lack thereof, this Task Force would sure look like a carnival from the outside.
Then glancing to her right Nil saw a man trying to speak to her, taken a bit by surprise she looked at the man for a second, lowered her headphone-looking gear to her neck and replied.
"Yes."
despite having no clue what the original question was.

Carefully watching the presentation in the auditorium where the briefing appeared to be focusing on Mischief Reef which was the site of the next mission, there was the defector named Qingshe in the middle of their forces while Nemo was gone. She had narrowly avoided being burned alive by the man who wielded the same kind of Noble Arms she had or the same power it had with it.

With her kunoichi bodyguard going away quietly and leaving Fuyuko on her own, the Japanese princess was a little confident that she could start putting in teamwork without the protection of a bodyguard. After the projector’s pressentation ended, the lieutenant allowed some questions or concerns to be made.

“I second what Second Lieutenant Larsdottir spoke of.” When it was her turn to speak, the Japanese royal spoke formally. “I did not think I got to know you too well, sir, so it will be a pleasure to get a chance to talk with you more in spite of my introversion. That and where I can best work with whatever assigned team I will be in.”

Nico was almost too energetic to be of service during the meeting, and far too hungry. Perhaps midnight training was a bit much, especially considering he didn’t get as much sleep as he would prefer after the fact. While he could easily function on 3 hours of rest, it was in no way ideal. Godspeed Dance took a lot out of him, and the long hours of rigorous swordplay and close quarters practice in the days after his encounter with Diligence were slowly beginning to show. Nico’s large hands were wrapped in bandages, and even those were charred at the ends. He hadn’t quite had time to grab anything to eat, so he had munched on a couple pieces of jerky from a rations box on the way which, while not filling, kept his stomach from growling during the important proceedings and debrief.

At first, Nico was content with just relaxing through the meeting, but decided to keep an ear listening and an eye out in case anything piqued his curiosity, or his anxiety. And there was already something that set him on edge. Or rather, someone. Bloody prick, but can’t blame her. There was always something about Qingshe that unnerved him, and it wasn’t helping his anxiety any. Still, Nico pushed down his unease and listened to the First Lieutenant give the debrief. It was the general explanation of what the next mission was, and the general theater of battle. A reef was less than ideal for him, but it was also likely a night battle, which meant his swordplay would be at its best.

Nico fiddled with a rather well-cut diamond in a bandaged hand, smirking a bit at some of the snark Noel was letting seep into his debrief. It definitely made it a bit more bearable to sit through than if it was all business. He clenched a bit at the name of Ren Huo, but relaxed at hearing that his brother was helping them out. His power would be a great asset for the team, especially considering their lack of defensive options. When the First Lieutenant finished his presentation and opened the floor to questions, he sighed and stood up.

”Volunteer Nico Makri. A question about the mission. And a few concerns of my own.” Nico’s accent is thin but noticeable. He raised a loosely closed bandaged hand, sticking out a finger. ”This first one is a rather important one for me. What time exactly is the mission taking place? My Noble Arm is rather time sensitive. While I believe that I’d be of service no matter what time it is, the time does play a role in what capacity I’m able to aid the task force.” He opened his other hand, letting his saber appear in his grasp, the familiar surge of heat going through his body. He took a coin out of his pocket and tossed it a bit into the air a few times, smiling a bit.

This trick never stops being fun to do. After a few tosses, he tossed the coin much higher than before, flicking it as it came back down. The miniature explosion caused by his pyrokinesis practically shot the coin into the ceiling. He shook his hand a bit, wincing at the recoil. ”During the day, I become more physically powerful and faster, and I become more precise and durable at night. So I’d prefer to be aware of what I should prepare for.

He took a deep breath and sighed. Now or never, Nico. He readjusted the burnt bandages on his hands giving them a little tug to tighten them, dismissing his blade. ”Now for my concern. One of the pricks from Seven Virtues came after me. A blondie by the name of Diligence. He asked me to be the leader of their organization, and said that Alan Turing was after me and Hannie. Obviously, I refused his offer, but I worry that he will try to force me to join. Turing is another matter in himself, but I don’t know if he’s as immediate of a threat as those Seven Virtues pricks are likely to be.” He sat back down, cracking a couple of knuckles passively. This was all a lot more than he thought he would be doing in the field of battle, but it hadn’t deterred him quite yet. If anything, it only solidified his resolve to fight for his own sake, as well as those who weren’t able to on their own.

He relaxed a bit as he thought about new things to do with the time he had. Perhaps get some actual breakfast, sleep a bit, train, or even get a good sparring session in before things got started. Nico’s mind was racing for something to do or something to happen, and he was good at masking that excitement. But all the same, a small smile was plastered on his face, despite his stress. What a day this is going to be.
