Austro-Hungarian Empire
Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie

Vienna, July 22, 1914

It is with full authority of the Royal Government that is invested in me, to deliver this message to the court of King Peter I. The infamous events registered in Sarajevo approximately a month ago, committed by Gavrilo Princip that resulted in the death of our dear Royal Prince, heir to the crown and Archduke of Austria-Este, Franz Ferdinand. The tragic end to the prince's life was the expression of a subversion, by the name of Narodna Odbrana, inside the Kingdom of Serbia that supports an ideology of separation of certain territories from the rightful rule of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy; said subversion has been growing under Serbian rule, encouraged strongly in some territories within the Kingdom and at times, the Serbian royal government has allowed offenses that soil the image of the Monarchy in Serbia to pass.

Certain responsabilities have to be ensured in the field of international law to make sure prosperity, peace and stability prevail and the Serbian Royal Government is not an exception; even if they were, the security of every subject of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy has been compromised by the rising tensions within Serbian territory. The obligations that the Serbian government are subject to, obligations that would diminish certain activities that were caused by an unprecedented, senseless discontent towards the annexation of Bosnia by the Monarchy. They have, clearly, not followed the obligations they were subjected to and they have not ensured the security of Austro-Hungarian subjects within their land, subjects that are under a constant threat of violence by the subversive groups that have arised. Instead, they have allowed numerous faults by the subversive groups to pass and it is with this voluntary ignorance, that the Royal Serbian Government have allowed the events at Sarajevo to happen. Not only is there voluntary tolerance towards these groups but also cooperation by Serbian officials belonging to the subversive groups in the form of weapons.

The Monarchy shall no longer stand idly by when actions that threaten its territories and subjects are allowed by the Serbian Government. There has been complacency in our part towards the growing dangers developing inside Serbian territories. But now the stability and peace inside the Empire are at stake. Certain steps will have to be taken by the Serbian Government so order against the traitorous groups that have, so recklessly, used acts of violence in order to impose on the public sentiments that agree with the illegal separation of territories rightfully owned by the Monarchy. A statement imbued with authority of the Serbian Government shall be issued, stating that any conduct indicating support of the ideology held by the subversive groups will be severely punished and that severely condemns the events that took place on July 28th.

The Serbian government will also:

1) Criminalize and supress any publication that sparks the flames of hatred against the Monarchy

2) Ascertain its authority and disband any organizations, such as Narodna Obradna, that encourage actions against the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and ensure that operations of said groups are not continued

3) Remove from its education systems any information that may form an unfounded hostility against the Monarchy

4) Remove from its forces any officer or soldier that may have been found carrying propaganda against the Monarchy

5) Cooperate with Austro-Hungarian forces in the dissolution of any emerging groups that may have not yet disbanded by the matters specified on point 2

6) Initiate a judicial process against the participants that took part in the conspiracy that lead to the archduke's death; it will also grant extraterritoriality to certain organs specified by Austria-Hungary that will take part in the proceedings

7) Organs with extraterritoriality will have the ability to impose order so they can carry their investigations in an efficient manner; also, in order to carry out the investigations efficiently, no individual from the Kingdom of Serbia will be extempt from the reach that the investigators may decide is appropriate, regardless of status or rank in the military

8) Take actions to prevent the smuggling of weapons and explosives across Serbia's borders; it will also dismiss from service and severely punish those who have cooperated with conspirators of the heinous crime of Sarajevo

9) Explain clearly to the Imperial and Royal government the offensive, hostile statements that Serbian officials abroad have made against Austria-Hungary after the assasination in the 28th of June

10) Inform the Imperial government of the execution of the points here established

Action will be taken if any of these points are not completely fulfilled.

The Imperial and Royal Government awaits the reply of the Royal Serbian Government by Saturday, the 25th, at the latest

Let Germany's stance in the Balkan question be completely unambiguous; We stand entirely at the side of our ally and we support them in their effort to bring justice to Ferdinand's murderers, direct and indirect, and to prevent any similar attack from the Slavist extremist cliche from ever taking place again.

But all the same we hope that our support will be irrelevant, for this is truly a question between the House Habsburg and the Serbian kingdom. Responsibility for justice in a crime of a minor nation, such as Serbia, against a great power, such as Austria-Hungary, lies in the hands of the great power, being Austria-Hungary, and no one else. Should anyone try to impose on the rights of Austria-Hungary, they shall have the German Empire to deal with as well.

It is a great honour to take over the reins of this country as the first native born Prime Minister of this proud and pristine country.
However, our economic situation is looking grim. The depression unleashed in Britain has hit us hard and ressources are not arriving as planned. This is why we must widen our focus to the rest of the world.
Our new goverment just sent a request to negotiate a trade agreement with Japan.
We also have to look at getting more workforce in our country so that we can grow independent from the economy of our motherland Great Britain. This is why I am planning to attract more immigrants into our country.
The latest advancements in our society allow me to finally heed the pleads of my people to give them full and equal rights as every other inhabitant of New Zealand so that they, as well, can feel proud to live here. Sure will this step unveil new challenges, but with the help of you, the citizens of this marvelous country, all that will be remembered by future generations, are what we make of it.
As we took our country's fate into our hands more than ever before, all we can do now, is to wait and hope, that our motherland solves their economic issues and we may get onto greener pastures.
Noho ora mai, Aotearoa! Goodbye and stay well, New Zealand!

While the Royal government sends its condolences the Imperial and Royal government, it also makes clear that it is insulted by the stance taken by the I.R. government on the subject. Serbia is not the subject nation of the Habsburgs, and will not stand for treatment that would imply such.

With that said, Serbia is a nation that cherishes the rule of law. Naturally, we will track down and appropriately punish the murderers of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and those who associated themselves with them, with the intent to take the Archduke's life.

The Royal Government binds itself further:

1. During the next regular of the Skuptschina to embody in the press laws a clause that will severely punish incitement to violence. However, the Royal Government cherishes the free press, and will not supress statements critical.

2. The Government possesses no proofs and the note of the I. and R. Government does not submit them that the society 'Narodna Odbrana' and other similar societies have committed, up to the present, any criminal actions of this manner through any one of their members. Notwithstanding this, the Royal Government will accept the demand of the I. and R. Government and dissolve the society 'Narodna Odbrana', as well as every society which should set against Austria-Hungary.

3. The Royal Serbian Government binds itself without delay to eliminate from the public instruction in Serbia anything which might further the propaganda directed against Austria-Hungary provided the I. and R. Government furnishes actual proofs of this propaganda.

4. The Royal Government is also ready to dismiss those officers and officials from the military and civil services in regard to whom it has been proved by judicial investigation that they have been guilty of actions against the territorial integrity of the Monarchy; it expects that the I. and R. Government communicate to it for the purpose of starting the investigation the names of these officers and officials, and the facts with which they have been charged.

5. The Royal Government is capable of disbanding these organisations by itself, and as such does not allow Austro-Hungarian forces to enter the sovereign territory of the Kingdom of Serbia.

6&7. This point is not only a contravention of our constitution, but also an insult for Serbia is more than capable of setting up a wide-ranging police investigation without Austrian aid. However, due to the nature of the case, we shall allow Austrian police officers to cooperate and enter Serbian territory, but they will be subject to Serbian law and oversight at all times.

The I. and R. Government is asked to make known, as soon as possible for the purpose of conducting the investigation, the existing grounds for suspicion and the proofs of guilt, obtained in the investigation at Sarajevo.

8. The Royal Government will amplify and render more severe the existing measures against the suppression of smuggling of arms and explosives. Personnel and Officers who have conspired to kill the Archduke shall be indicted in this investigation.

9. The Royal Government does not take responsibility for any opinions its public servants hold towards the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

10. The Royal Government will notify the I. and R. Government, so far as this has not been already done by the present note, of the execution of the measures in question as soon as one of those measures has been ordered and put into execution.

The Royal Serbian Government believes it to be in our common interest not to rush the solution of this affair and calls for calm in Vienna.

The volatile situation in the Balkans has alarmed Russia. The Empire does not seek war, but in light of Austria's attitude and German support, we hereby enact a full mobilisation of the entire Russian Armed Forces, including those of Poland and Finland, and put our fleet on high alert to be ready to defend Serbia from foreign agression.

Austro-Hungarian Empire

Vienna, July 28, 1914
The Royal Serbian Government not having answered in a satisfactory manner the note of July 22, 1914, presented by the Austro-Hungarian Minister at Belgrade, the Imperial and Royal Government are themselves compelled to see to the safeguarding of their rights and interests, and, with this object, to have recourse to force of arms. Austria-Hungary consequently considers herself henceforward in state of war with Serbia.

During the reign of my father, Alexander III, Russia participated in no major wars and my father was known as the peacemaker. I have tried to live up to his legacy and always preferred the pen over the sword both internally and externally. Like every right-minded man, I am opposed to violent conflict in all forms and would do everything in my power to prevent this crisis from turning into a war.

However, the reality is as clear as it is grim. The Habsburg Empire, opressor of the Orthodox Romanians and Serbians in its territory, has set its filthy gaze upon the innocent nation of Serbia. Serbia is being held responsible for a crime it clearly had no knowledge of, and it now is punished for nothing. If only it was for this Russia would condemn this invasion. But Serbia is our brother in faith and blood, and as our ties are closer - our reaction will be stronger.

We henceforth consider ourselves at war with the Habsburg Empire. Our aim is just - We aim to save Serbia from Vienna's clutches that have for too long opressed our Slavic and Orthodox brothers within its borders, and this injustice too we will aim to end. God is with us, victory shall be ours!

The Kingdom of Greece watches this new crisis in the Balkans with severe concern, having hoped that the agreements with the Ottoman Empire would've ensured a lasting peace and an end to the rivalry between the Imperial and Royal Government and the Russian Imperial Government in the region, however clearly this is not the case.

The Kingdom of Greece had signed a treaty of defensive alliance with the German Empire and is engaged in the cooperation agreement regarding the construction of the Adriatic railroad with the Austro-Hungarian government, thus this conflict, in regard to our direct allies, and the constructed route of the Adriatic railroad in the Sanjak of Novi Pazar has direct impact upon the foreign policy of Greece.

Because of this, we wish to make the following statement: Whilst we currently do not regard the hostilities started, and the German warning as a direct attack upon the German Empire, and thus a case of alliance, should either our direct interests come into conflict with the warring parties, or should there be a direct attack upon the German Nation we will overthink our position, and reevaluate the situation and regard it as a case of alliance accordingly.

The Russians have brought their war, their long awaited war. A war not to defend Serbia, but to assert the dominance of the Russian hordes and their co-conspirators over Europe. Through the blood of the Habsburg monarchy and their evil influence over Serbia they have wrought this war on us. As a civilised European power and the ally of Austria-Hungary our response comes without any doubt; I here forth issue a declaration of war against the Russian Empire.

I herewith decree: The German Army and the Imperial Navy are to be made ready for war in accordance with the mobilization plans for the German Army and the Imperial Navy.

I additionally call on Germany's allies to join in this war against the Russian Empire and any nations that should join her in her war against Germany and Austria-Hungary. By the Treaty of Frankfurt we call on the Ottoman Empire, by the Treaty of Athens we call on the Kingdom of Greece, by the Treaty of Sofia we ask that Bulgaria allow the use of their infrastructure by Germany and her allies in war and by the Treaty of Copenhagen I call on the Kingdom of Scandinavia.

As leader of the Kingdom of Bulgaria, I recognize the current situation in Europe to be of great importance to our nation, given our geographical location. However, Bulgaria remembers the bloodshed in the Balkans in recent years, as I am sure many of the principal powers in this region do, and does not wish to enter such a conflict that would repeat these horrifying events and inflict further hardship upon its people. Despite our previous diplomatic inclination and recent influence from the great powers of both sides, Bulgaria is to pursue a strong policy of neutrality.

Less than three years since the last bloody conflict in the Balkans, and already another war looms. The Turkish-Bulgarian war of 1911 was costly for the Ottoman Empire, and it is the desire of the Porte to avoid any such bloodshed on Ottoman soil. However, unfortunately, such desire is unlikely to be fulfilled, due to the closeness of the war and the history of Ottoman influence in the region. Also, diplomatic ties link the Ottoman Empire with both sides of the conflict. Therefore, the Ottoman Empire will at this time not be taking a stance on the war in the Balkans. Until such time as Ottoman neutrality is ended, the following policies will be put into effect:

1) The Ottoman Empire will not tolerate any fighting on Ottoman soil, and all non Ottoman troops are forbidden from entering Ottoman territory, with the exception of relevant troops within suzerains of the Ottoman Empire, such as British troops within Egypt.

2) A cease-fire zone is in place within the north-eastern corner of the Aegean Sea, the southern and south-western edge of the Black Sea, and within the Turkish Straits and the Sea of Marmara. Military and civilian vessels are still allowed to travel through the Turkish Straits as per peacetime laws, but there is to be no fighting between hostile vessels within the cease-fire zone.

3) Military vessels of hostile nations are forbidden from remaining inside of an Ottoman port for longer than 24 hours, and crew members or passengers on said vessels must remain within the borders of said port.

4) Unless sufficient reason is given, any breach of the above policies will be considered an act of war, and will be dealt with as such.

In light of recent events, The Kingdom of Bulgaria is inclined to alter its stance on the current diplomatic situation in Europe. Bulgaria will henceforth honour the Treaty of Sofia and allow the use of our infrastructure by Germany and its allies. However, our support shall be offeredunder these conditions:

1) Military access through Bulgaria will be granted for Germany and its allies for transport purposes only, not for permanent residence or fortification.

2) Bulgaria will provide assistance in the form of arms to Germany and it allies but will not provide troops at this time.

3) Bulgaria wishes to remain a complete cease-fire zone.

4) Germany is requested to honour the terms of the Treaty and provide military assistance to The Kingdom of Bulgaria in the event that it is attacked.

National Synarchist Union for the Revolution
Unión Nacional Sinarquista para la Revolución

Camaradas!

It has been a year since we defeated the enemies of the Revolution and brought forth a new chapter in the history of our great country. No longer will the people of Mexico be subject to enslavement by a wealthy upper-class that seeks to benefit only itself. Now, the people of Mexico will stand together, united by the Revolution, and we shall strive to see the ideals of what was fought for truly put into practice. In order to do this however, the National Synarchist Union for the Revolution(UNSR) will have to rule our nation and see that all is implemented correctly.

Thus, in order to do so, all other parties are as of now no longer considered legal entities. New elections shall be held where the public may vote on those candidates officially endorsed by the UNSR. Further, I shall be taking on the role of Chairman of the Council for the Preservation of the Revolution, my duties will be solely to see that all that we have fought for is kept in place and honored. José Doroteo Arango Arámbula, a pillar of the Revolution to whom we owe a great deal, shall assume the Presidency and will represent our proud nation abroad.

It may seem harsh for the time being, and even authoritarian in measure, but this is a necessary step in building the Revolutionary path. I thank you all for your support.

¡Viva la Revolución!

.
A Terrible blow to freedom and Democracy in North America is embodied in the latest news from Mexico. The Canadian State is appalled by the intrinsically despotic practices in UNSR Mexico, it appears political liberty in Mexico after the so called Mexican Revolution are in fact worse than that under the Caudillo, Porfirio Diaz. The un-democratic single-party politics in UNSR Mexico have effectively shattered relations between Canada and Mexico.
.
Mexican-Canadian talks have since collapsed after this, the most recent proclamation of Mexico. These talks had envisioned Canadian funding of the unstable North American state in order to reconstruct the country after the destructive civil war and Porfirian Banking crisis for the overall prosperity of North America and Liberty in general.
.
We fear for the Mexican People, another war is a possibility.

Herewith the Dominion of New Zealand pleads the mighty fatherland Great Britain to consider remaining neutral in this Balkan War as long as possible. If actions are needed to be taken, New Zealand will, however, pledge her allegiance to the king.
Still, in the case of war, New Zealand begs to remain neutral. The people of New Zealand do not desire participating in a war which does not pose an immediate threat to their well being.
Nevertheless promises New Zealand to supply and rearm British troops in Europe and to provide ammunition for the war effort, as well as, should the situation be critical, mobilize her troops to reinforce the cause of the king.

The Great War: July 28th-December 31st

In AD 1914, war was beginning. The murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand led to Austria declaring war on Serbia after countless attempts at negotiation and breaking the tensions failed, followed by a Russian declaration of war against Austria, and a German declaration of war against Russia. In private, France gave its assurances to Russia that it would help. The wheels were set in motion, and Europe was lit on fire. Across the continent, millions of men were called up to serve their country.

The first battles of the war were in Serbia, where something happened that nobody had imagined. The Serbian army took the fight to Austria by launching a quick offensive into Novi Pazar, where the local population was dumbfounded by what happened as much as military planners in Vienna. And another good surprise came Serbia's way immediately. Montenegro had declared war on Austria a day before they declared war on Serbia and mobilised the army within twenty-four hours, but had left the country and retreated to Novi Pazar in order to join the Serbian army, where it was outfitted with modern equipment the Serbian army could spare from their arsenal and took an oath of allegiance to King Peter I in light of King Nicholas fleeing to Italy. It was a curse in disguise for Austria, which upon the Serbian taking of Novi Pazar decided to move through Montenegro.

[Montenegro is occupied by Austria, however Montenegro's totally mobilised army, numbering 64,507 soldiers, is at the command of Serbia. It is upgraded to army level 18]

Serbia's army now numbered 600,075 men. Poorly trained and equipped as they may be, they were ready to defend their fatherland from the Habsburg monster that was enroaching them from two sides. From the south, it was decided that Albania should exert pressure on Serbia and assault the south. The plan seemed obvious, if it weren't for the trivial detail that Albania didn't have a standing army. In all haste, one was created and mobilised, with around 91,000 soldiers mobilised. However with little training and rivalries all throughout, it was not much in terms of a fighting force, but this should be negated by the fact they were to assault at the same times as the Austrians would. In this horrible state they assaulted Novi Pazar and met the former Montenegrin army, bolstered by 75,000 Serbian conscripts. Montenegro's royal guard especially distinguished themselves in the ensuing slaughterhouse, and it was perceived that Albania was knocked out of the war.
[-3 regulars and 37,052 conscripts to Serbia, 69,796 Kebab removed]

Montenegrin troops during the battle of Plav

This was yet the first wave the Serbs had to face, as the Austrian army that was to assault Serbia had just arrived. Crossing the Drina, it was the second invading army to have entered Serbian soil in the war, and was proving to be better at its job than the Albanians, which really didn't say anything. The Austrian advance was unopposed at both crossing points, Šabac and Ljubovija, as the Serbian commander, Radomir Putnik, deemed it impossible to defend the entire border. Falling back to a more defensible position, deeper in land, the Austrians took the opportunity to rest and set up their outposts. The Serbians, not knowing where the enemy exactly were, regrouped 25,000 regulars and 150,000 conscripts to confront the enemy. On August 15th, Marshal Putnik ordered a counterattack and at eleven o'clock in the evening they met. The Austrian position were poorly defended and in the chaos that ensued, quickly retreated. The Serbian quickly followed and soon the Austrian forces were prevented from linking up. But despite the Austrian army's best efforts the Serbian army was able to push them out of their country over the course of the next nine days, when they reached the banks of the river Drina in spite of the heavy losses they took. The force that came to take Belgrade and the Danube in general met a similar fate. It was co-ordinated well, had every advantage it could wish with the exception of morale, and started out incredibly succesful. Success was not limited, especially as Belgrade was shelled and captured within the first days of the conflict. The Serbian retreat, however, gave a good chance for them to regroup and strike back at the Austrian invaders, who retreated after taking heavy casualties and hearing of the other force's defeat. Serbia's casualties were even heavier, but it stood victorious and had repelled the Austrians. For now.
[-4808 regulars and 186,826 conscripts to Serbia, -1,474 regulars and 146,808 conscripts to Austria]

A British cartoonist's view of the Austro-Serbian war.

However, the clash of the Titans was yet to begin. Supporting with Austria's army in the East, the Kaiserliche Heer was the most powerful army in the world. It possessed the most modern training, weapons, discipline, drill and war plans. It was to help the Habsburg empire to take on a most dangerous adversary, the mighty Rus'. The largest country in the world had taken steps to modernise its army and economy in the last years, and until the London Stock Market crash it had paid off. Russia possessed the largest army in the world, the largest number of artillery, machine guns, the largest ammunition stockpile in the world, but it also had certain flaws its German counterpart did not possess. The bear was sick. It was corrupt to the bone, undisciplined, the army lacked training in the modern equipment, the officers did not care for their men, and many other structural differences. More different these two forces could not have been when their monarchs called them to war.

While the Germans began the advance in Poland and was the first to meet the enemy, hostilities between the two commenced upon the Russian invasion of East Prussia. Warfare in the East had already been much more fluid than in the South. Tsar Nicholas II and his generals planned to send the Russian 1st army, 300,000 strong, into East Prussia. Following the railway lines, it was to draw the German defenders towards it. Bogging the defenders down, the 1st Polish army, 220,000 strong, attacked through the heavily wooded area at Tannenberg. Nearly encircled, the local German commander begged for permission to retreat, but the Kaiser refused and instead called Field Marshal von Hindenburg out of retirement. The old Field Marshal used the superior German rail system to encircle the First Polish Army, bogging it down in the Tannenberg woods resulting in the Germans mauling the enemy at a heavy cost on their own side. However they were saved by the First Army attacking and breaking the eastern flank, allowing the Polish to escape encirclement. Whilst the planned destruction of the 1st Polish Army was not achieved, it was nevertheless a stunning victory as the road to Warsaw from the North was now open.
[-6,023 regulars and 15,759 conscripts to Poland, -56,697 conscripts to Russia. -48,001 regulars to Germany]

The second part of a pincer in Poland was now made, with the help of the Austrian Army. Or so they thought. The Austrians were pre-occupied defending their own territory that the German attacks from the West were beaten off because they had no support. Neither did the Russians, so after a number of skirmishes they retreated to Warsaw. Limited Russian success, however, was seen in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. 500,000 soldiers of the 2nd Polish Army launched a full-scale assault on Krakau, aiming to take it from the Austrians. When the Austrians were confident of their ability to hold, the Russians threw in no less than two million men in an attempt to evict Austria from Galicia. With a little help from the Austrian general staff performing miserably, it worked and resulted in a slaughterhouse for the Austrians, with over a million dead, wounded and captured.
[-3,136 regulars and 177,799 conscripts to Poland, -2,711 regulars and 527,102 conscripts to Russia, -218 regulars and 1,147,051 conscripts to Austria]

Russian morale ran high in Galicia, where the Austrian army scattered.

Shocked by the loss, Germany decided to act on its own and press the gains it had made in the last month by advancing on Warsaw, defending Silesia and supporting the shattered Austrian armies while doing so. The Russian commander, Nikolay Ivanov, had received information of the impending assault and ordered his troops to dig in and defend Warsaw to the last man, as it was too important to give away. A staggering number of men gathered in and around Warsaw, no less than 200,000 full-time soldiers from the finest regiments and 900,000 conscripted men were rushed in to defend Poland's capital from the 800,000 Germans that were closing in. In the ensuing meat-grinder 600,000 soldiers died, but for the Russians the chief objective had been achieved - Warsaw was defended and the German advance stunted.

[-26,669 regulars and 263,358 conscripts to Russia, -7,103 regulars and 294,787 conscripts to Germany]

On sea, the Russians and French try to blockade Germany off, which through a series of failures and miscommunications does not work. Meanwhile Germany unleashes the hundred submarines it has to attack Russian and French shipments. While it is a threat to shipping, the rules of engagement and primitive ways of submarine warfare mean that not much damage is done. The French Mediterranean fleet, however, managed to completely blockade Austria-Hungary's coast.

[Russia and Austria are partially blockaded, France gets away with it.]

The Western Front was a very different war. The border between France and Germany was heavily fortified on both sides, but more so on the French side. The German war plan called for 20% of the army to be stationed on the French border and prevent a French incursion into Alsace-Lorraine, as it was thought the French would be all too happy to get it back. France, mobilised and ready for war, started a series of probing attacks at the border to find a weak spot - And they found it. The corridor south of Colmar was the weakest, and the French army assaulted it with full force. Over the course of two weeks, the Germans sent half of the army on the French border there to stop them. The French miraculously succeeded in a limited breakthrough at a surprisingly low cost, but the Germans managed to contain them with little effort after the breakthrough.
[-16,750 regulars and 46,900 conscripts to Germany. -20,100 regulars and 56,280 conscripts to France]

The first to fight: The French Foreign Legion

French success continued in Africa, where three armoured cruisers landed a force of 1500 Senegalese riflemen in Lomé, the capital of Togoland. These Senegalese proved superb fighters as they chased the German colonial militia through the colony, occupying it with ease. Another assault into Kamerun was prepared, but due to logistical troubles it was decided to put it off.

The Netherlands is saddened, and distraught by the slaughtering in this war. We hope that a peaceful solution can be reached to this conflict, and we would like to announce our intention to stay neutral in this conflict. We hope the warring nations will see fit to recognize our neutrality, and allow us the same rights as we had in peace time. We must warn these nations, that any troop movements in our territory, or aggressive actions against our ships, will be considered an act of aggression, and will be treated as such.

Kingdom of France

Royaume de France

Several years ago the great powers of Europe gathered in Berlin to stabilize the volatile region that is the Balkans, an effort in which they succeeded by producing the Treaty of Berlin. This treaty succeeded in years of peace for the Balkans with the exception of a brief war between the Kingdom of Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire, in which the rest of the Balkans denied to join Bulgaria in this war, instead choosing to maintain the peace that had been accomplished. Now the Austro-Hungarian Empire seeks to expand their influence in the region by bullying the sovereign Kingdom of Serbia to submit to their will. As the Russian Empire valiantly jumped to the aid of their Slavic brothers, the German Empire has sought fit to declare war under the pretense of halting Russian dominance over Europe. We must now continue to stand firm alongside our Russian allies in preventing the Austro-Hungarian Empire and their German allies from further destabilizing the Balkans once more. Although I fear there will only be further bloodshed before this war is brought to an end, we must press on until we are free of these acts of aggression.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

As the flames of war fan and threaten to consume all of Europe, the United Kingdom shall at this time remain neutral. As a neutral power during this conflict, she expects that her neutral rights of trade and commerce will be respected by all belligerents. Furthermore she must remind the belligerents that the United Kingdom will maintain its commits particularly those involving the countries of Belgium and Luxembourg as set forth in the Treaties of London, 1839 and 1867.

After a brief quarrel between the government and the private-owned National Bank of Greece over the financing of new military equipment for the Greek government, it was decided that a new, national bank would be set up – The Bank of Greece. This was to give the government more power over the finances in the country and stabilise the economy as a whole, leading many to believe that the economic depression would soon be lifted and Greece would enter a new era of economic prosperity – despite the raging tensions in the Balkans.

Given the severe economic crisis, the government of Greece decides this to be a good time to increase government expenditure on infrastructure, employing the newly unemployed in a programme which would see an improvement of existing roads, railways and ports and the building of new ones where necessary. Needless to say, the project is a huge success, and although costly, the future benefits of the much needed injection would doubtlessly be worth the cost. The Kingdom of France realised that the war it has become embroiled in may well be longer than initially anticipated and decides that it would be best if the economy is mobilised for a long, debilitating war from early on. The production of weapons, ammunition and other necessary industrial equipment is increased and the government pumps extraordinary amounts of money into the industrial mobilisation. It is clear that if ever there was a warm-up period to this war, it is now over.

In addition to its industrial mobilisation for war, the Kingdom of France deems this a good time to increase spending on the research and development of its airpower, emphasising the importance of military aircraft. Costs are very high and results are varying in success while progress is quite slow. But it is progress nonetheless.

Being a mighty colonial power with an empire spanning continents, France has a natural military advantage over a great many other nations in the world. Not only that, its treatment of those it has colonised has been the talk of many anti-imperialists. In a show that it still rules its colonies with an iron fist, still has the loyalty of its colonies and will stand for no rebelliousness, France sends a call out across the empire to rally colonial populations against the German threat. Given the huge colonial population and the amount spent on the campaign, the response is rather disappointing. However, the French can now count on a sizeable colonial auxiliary force should the need arise.

As the war raged, Russia was performing well enough but found its logistics stretched, but also its army to be unflexible. To make the army have more support, a radical move was made. The two Ilya Muromets airliners were seized, fitted with bomb racks and machine guns, and turned into large bombers, the fist of their kind. During trials these two Flying Frankensteins performed well and the new Imperial Russian Air Force ordered eight more. Russia also took steps to distance itself from the German foemen, and a campaign of degermanisation was called for. Hailed by everyone except for some of the Baltic nobility, the most noticeable change was the renaming of St. Petersburg to Petrograd, where the shipyards worked overtime to make sure the three new Admiral Ushakov-class Dreadnoughts were finished within the year.

The Australian government took a number of measures to revive their economy, as well as the world's. First off it reduced tariffs by 4% and followed up by a small industrial drive, in order to produce finished goods rather than natural resources. The increase in industries was tiny, but for Australia it was quite the increase in manufacturing power.

In South Africa, the government shuffled tax rates around a bit in order to spur the economy. It not only did that, but also invested a lot of money in the country's agricultural and service sectors.

In 1914, fifteen years of Guerilla came to an end as the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed between the Dominion, the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. The Boers, as well as British settles, received many freedoms in the country and the Boer Republics swore loyalty to the Union of South Africa as 'self-governing provinces', which in negotiations with the Dominion meant that they essentially remained independent.

South Africa, together with New Zealand, saw that Britain was descending into economic chos and many people wanted to flee it. Both countries opened their borders for British immigrants, hoping to bolster their population, with success.

New Zealand also took other measures to improve its economy, and that was to turn away from the epicentre, Britain. It negotiated a trade agreement with Japan and worked to integrate the Maori into society, which essentially acted as a population boost.

The Habsburg Empire found itself in dire straits. The once-proud army was not only shattered by the Russian bear, but it also failed to take down tiny Serbia. The army now looked like a uniformed mob, with nearly no soldier being there voluntarily. The Monarchy called out to patriots to defend the empire, and soon 50,000 Germans and Hungarians signed up to join the fight. But not only soldiers won the war, as the wives they left behind found work in the factories that made ammunition for the Empire's armies.

Although Germany had sent nearly the entire air force to Poland to fight the Russian Empire, it had been used sparsely. The General staff not only resolved to use air power properly in the coming years, but also to make more and better planes. While it was easier to build more planes, the creation of better ones was a slightly more complicated affair.

This image was reflected in the attempts to increase the size and quality of the army. The German media may have been censored, but the horror stories from maimed veterans returning home led to incredible amounts of draft dodging and little enthusiasm for joining the army, but this didn't put off the most fanatical patriots, of which a number still signed up.

But in the midst of this war the economic malaise was continuing, and a bank run seemed likely. The government, however, declared a bank holiday and guaranteed the bank accounts of individuals, spending enormous amounts of money but did see a strong improvement in the economy as a result.

Guns blazed across the fields of continental Europe, as nations of all strengths found themselves hurled in the greatest struggle since the days of Napoleon. Meanwhile in London, the United Kingdom found itself enjoying the wonders of splendid isolation and peace. The British pursued the path of keeping all their trade links strong, and indeed strengthening economic co-operation within the empire as they successfully pushed intra-imperial trade. To ensure that the ongoing European war would not disturb the blissful economising of the British Empire, convoys would soon become accustomed to being overshadowed literally by the grand hulls of Britain’s finest ships whose latest mission was the protection of their merchants.

In the wake of the London Depression, the United Kingdom was quick to act in their aim of revitalising their national economy. Businessmen and entrepreneurs all over Britain that once suffered from a dreaded factory closures would be delighted by the governmental subsidies allowing them to be re-opened. With these loans vital for keeping the industrial effort of the United Kingdom alive, workers all over the isles would find their once-broken faith in the economy to be regained. Although it was not enough to save all factories from closure, it was an economically sound plan that signalled the beginnings of a recovery.

As war engulfed the plains of Europe, it came as no surprise that the British Army immediately devoted their best efforts to the modernisation of their current weaponry should the worst come to the worst. Funding was immediately secured in light of the dangerous situation, and research and development of the latest Lee-Enfield rifles began. Older versions were abandoned in light of what was termed the "Pattern 1914 Enfield". The rifle was sleek, modern, and elegant - it seemed perfect. Almost too perfect. What the British army failed to account for was that while on paper it was to be a fearsome rifle, it was doomed from the very start. The frantic atmosphere required that the best of rifles be made as soon as possible, and thus both the production and testing of the rifle found itself far too rushed. The new rifle was far too complicated and bungled to be of any use.

Abroad in the deserts of Egypt, the sun began to reflect upon the man-made lake that is the Quattra Depression. British engineers worked tirelessly, braving the extremes with only two breaks for tea each day in order to ensure that this colonial megaproject would be complete. But despite their best efforts, the water carried could only be so much. Despite much progress being made over the years, it is obvious there is still a long way to go.

The unemployed lined the streets of Canada, pleading for jobs and money wherever they could find it. One such option came in light of Canada's ambitious preparations in modernising their small military. The entire administration was overhauled, with the Minister of Militia and Defence, Sam Hughes, speaking confidently of improving all aspects of their army. Whether it was logistics or communications, all areas would find themselves affected. However despite the earnest planning and limited size of the military, the overhaul would find itself taking longer than expected, no thanks to flaring tensions between French and Anglo officers in the midst of the economically tough times. All was not gloom, however, as despite being far from the frontlines of the European war, the Canadian army correctly predicted that a few of their own citizens would be whipped up by war fever. A recruitment campaign with the aim of strengthening the dominion became a success, with several thousand volunteers and applicants ready to serve for a stronger Canada.

As part of the British Empire, Canada would find itself one of the worst hit nations in the aftermath of the London Depression. Millions were poor, factories lay empty, and once bustling high streets were christened 'ghost towns'. Despite the pessimistic outlook that many Canadian officials had for the future, nothing would stop their impressive revitalisation effort. Bankers from nations far around the world made way for Canada, as the government sought to use their expertise to rebound the decaying economy into its once prosperous state. Dying banks and shops would have access to some of the brightest financial minds in the world, and it certainly assisted. Following the advice of their newly-recruited legion, Canada began to grant economic autonomy throughout the nation which in turn laid out the conditions for a spectacular recuperation. While they were yet to reach the levels of pre-crash production, much progress had been made.

The ripples of the London Stock Market crash had died down by the time they reached the far away of East Asia, but that did not save the Republic of China from economic troubles. The Kuomintang government was quick to act, prescribing stimulus in the form of the planned Trans-Mongolian railway. Unemployed all over China gathered in Beiping, where the ambitious plan was showcased. Initial scepticism was brushed aside as the engineering genius of Jeme Tien Yow successfully allowed for the railroad’s construction to begin despite the rugged mountains to the north. During this time the Kuomintang took corrective actions to both stabilise the Yuan, as well as to enforce an anti-corruption drive. Thousands of KMT members found themselves forced out of office and dragged to court by the merciless Control Yuan, where punishments ranged from heavy fines to lengthy jail sentences, and in some cases visits to practising marksmen. A peculiar aspect was the forced marching of the guilty in order to shame them publically. While this brought a sense of victory amongst the common people of China, there were outspoken critics within the press who believed this to be a step too far.

The calamitous war that had absolutely devastated Thrace was a learning experience for the general staff of the Ottoman Empire, who while ultimately victorious, felt that the military was overall an ineffective establishment. With the backing of the Young Turks in their aim of healing the Sick Man of Europe, lavish funds were poured into the Turkish army were military exercises soon became a common sight. Officers throughout the Empire devised a wide variety of tactics as they pushed the common soldier to become strong individual warriors, worthy of making Mehmed II proud.

The Ottoman solution to alleviating the worst effects of the economic turmoil was to support the farmers of the land, with small subsidies granted to the largest and most profitable of farmland. Agricultural mechanisation also began to make an appearance during this scheme, with gifts of tractors and even milking machines finding their ways to these very same farmers. Despite the government’s generous attitude, it was argued that not enough was accomplished, with the owner of smaller plots dismayed by the government’s perceived ignorance of their plight.

Sandwiched between the British Raj and French Indochina, Siam was balanced precariously between the two colonial powers. But the small kingdom yearned to keep its independence, and not only that: but as a strong modern nation. An edict was passed in the early months of the year proclaiming that primary education was to be compulsory for all children. Amidst concerns that there simply weren’t enough schools to cater to all Siamese children, the Kingdom responded by raising construction sites throughout the big cities and rural villages alike, where future schools would enlighten young minds. During this campaign, Siam’s primitive railway system was overhauled and new roads were paved as the Kingdom sought to ensure better connection between not only the children and schools, but for the common people and goods flowing into the country.

Despite being far from the frontlines of the war within Europe, the Kingdom of Siam undertook preparations with the military due to increasing concerns the bordering colonies may embroil themselves in conflict. Military drills were held deep within the jungles of Siam, which coupled with extensive local knowledge of the harsh terrain proved to be an admirable success. The Siamese army returned to their garrison having learned vital skills about warfare.

Japan was said to be unsure of its future direction in the years following the Emperor Meiji’s death, but early on in the new Emperor’s reign came a vital governmental restructure. Public outrage was at a high, as citizens angrily protested the Genrō-dominated government having failed to save the Empire from economic turmoil. A few voices even called for military intervention in the ongoing European war. Backed by the powers of this public anger and increasing westernisation, a new constitution was passed with the blessing of the Emperor calling for a reformed state. Great expenses were incurred as the government was overhauled, with the newly-appointed PM Inukai Tsuyoshi promoting a new democratic Japan. With a newly elected cabinet to work with, Inukai met success as Japan was dragged out of economic turmoil with a quick stabilisation of the Yen. Sweeping agricultural reforms were then promoted across both Japan and Korea as the government bought land from the domineering landowners and promptly sold it to the farmers themselves alongside great subsidies and loans, much to their relief in these difficult times.

Fearful of struggling to maintain successful contracts during the initial news of the London Stock Market Crash, the Zaibatsu found refuge as the Republic of China offered vast amounts of vital resources in return for Japanese armaments. Similar to the economic reforms carried out in Japan, the Emirate of Afghanistan sought to ensure a better life for their farmers by purchasing the most fertile of land in the north of the country. ‘National farms’, as they were termed, were established throughout these allotments and divided between not only the former owners of the land, but the needy of Afghanistan. Formerly unemployed people mired in poverty found themselves with a well-paying job as they reaped the land. From time to time, soldiers would also join the ordinary farmers as a result of a new training scheme recently introduced. Fresh recruits were put through half a year’s work within the farmlands or mines of Afghanistan, to bolster productivity as well as to ensure their own fitness.
