The game has been inactive for too long, and generally never got the amount of activity I wanted. I'm sorry, everyone who invested time and effort into the game, but I've decided to close it. Please don't bump the thread further, and let it die in peace. Thank you.

Legends. Myths. Tales of angels and demons, gods and monsters. Every nation and culture has them, some dating back to the very dawn of humanity. But they have always been thought of as mere fantasy, fabrications of the imaginations of storytellers and poets.

Until that fateful day.

Millennial Day, most people call it. The crux of the millennium, when thousands upon thousands of rifts in space itself tore open all around the world. Out of them flooded fantastic creatures of every shape and size imaginable, ranging from majestic and awe-inspiring to more terrifying than any mortal's nightmare to everything in between. These creatures displayed powers beyond all human knowledge and understanding, powers that put most human technologies to shame, powers that could only be called magic.

Fortunately, it was not the end of humanity. At the same time as the supernatural creatures' arrival, multitudes of people across the globe suddenly awakened magical powers very much like those used by those mysterious beings. Battles were fought, societal structures were torn down, and the world was nevertheless forever changed that day.

With such a sudden and radical shift in the distribution of power, it seemed like every man and monster wanted to take a piece of the world for himself. Then the first Soul Pact was forged between a human mage and a spirit, as the creature called itself, unlocking much greater power in both. Many others followed suit, pioneering an age of hopeful, if tentative, cooperation.

The more they worked together, the more familiarity the humans began seeing in the spirits, recognizing figures in their legends and myths and, more amazingly, actual histories. It wasn't long before the truth was publicly known, that humans in fact passed on to the spirits' home plane of existence after death and became spirits themselves. The spirit world, like the spirits themselves, resembled heaven and hell and everything in between. According many spirits, especially those who had lived for centuries or even millennia, travel between the human and spirit worlds had always been possible, until two thousand years ago, when it was closed off by the Biblical Seven Seals for reasons unknown, along with the sealing of all magic and spirits into the spirit world. And thus magic and spirits had been all but forgotten by humans, their various myths and legends the only remaining fragmented accounts of events past. Two millennia later, the Seals were released once more, but their aftereffects still linger, limiting the magical powers of any being in the human world who does not possess a Soul Pact between human and spirit.

Thirty years have passed since Millennial Day. For the most part, the human world has settled into a state of relative stability and order, but large swathes of planet Earth still lie in chaos as myriads of forces struggle for dominance. Seven major factions have emerged over time, each having its own visions for the future. Beneath the calm surface, a storm is brewing, and the future is going to be... exciting, one way or another.

As for you... Human or spirit, you are one of those blessed with great power, the power to potentially shape that future with your very own hands. What path will you take? Will you bring about an age of untold prosperity, or of utter ruin?

Overview

Welcome to The Seven Seals, a roleplay set in a world where many a myth is true, in some way or other. Magic and spirits had always been a part of human life since time immemorial, until two thousand years ago, when the sacrifice of Jesus Christ caused the Seven Seals to appear in the world for reasons still not well-understood today, sealing away all traces of spirits and magic from the human world. Memories of these fantastical beings and powers have since then faded into the various myths and legends of the world, until two thousand years later, when the Seven Seals partially released their hold on the world. But their effects still exist, dampening the magnitude of all magic in the human world, unless said magic is a part of a Soul Pact between human and spirit. Hence comes the main feature of the game, where each player creates a human character and a spirit character, and may choose to have them form a Soul Pact with each other, or each with the character of another player.

Each player can create as many characters as she feels she can handle. Players are encouraged to each create at least one pair of fleshed-out major characters, as well as a larger number of less detailed, more minor characters, so that there are more characters to interact with. You may promote your minor characters to major characters, or even demote major characters to minor characters, if you wish.

From the interest check thread:

Having read the opening post now and seeing the ranks, would Zadkiel have been a regular archangel or a different rank?
And just to be sure, is it possible, for a human to have an alignment other than neutral? I might make a human with a light alignment if I can.
I'm also surprised that Amaterasu is the leader of the japanese pantheon and not Izanagi.

Archangel is only the second lowest rank, and any angel with some kind of achievement would qualify as an archangel. An important angel like Zadkiel would be a cherub, or at the very least an ophan.

Yes, humans can have any of the alignments. I'll make that clearer in the first post.

In standard Shinto setups, Amaterasu is usually the leader of the Japanese gods, so that's what I'm going with. Izanagi likely had "retired" from the leadership role and now mostly fulfills advisory functions, I'd presume.

EDIT: Clarified that not all demons have to be "evil". The description of the Dark alignment alone implies that already, but better safe than sorry.

I'm going to create a WIP post for characters in the characters section hehe

Pay the most attention to UG as he'll be my main character, but I'm also going to put up a WIP for a human and one for Pan, I don't plan on using Pan till later in the story since I've dubbed him still missing, so I might not finish his as fast as I do UG and the human.

(Note: Even if a spirit tries to go to outer space, where the Seals have no influence, and then try to enter Earth from there, it'd have still been blocked by a barrier around the planet. Also, section 1.2 of the Codex of Magic mentions that nuclear reactions are powered by tiny portals from the Sea of Chaos to the human world, so this is one exploit that could have worked in getting around the Seals when they simply blocked interplanar travel. But nuclear reactions opened portals into effectively random spots in the Sea of Chaos, and the portals didn't last very long, so no spirit actually had the opportunity to do this exploit before the Seals went down. And if enough spirits did do this exploit, then the Seals would've prematurely switched to power dampening mode like they are now.)

Just added this to the history section. Extremely unlikely to actually concern anyone, but putting it there just in case anyone asks.

Question on anchors for wormholes and teleportation:
Can anchors be created near someone or only at their exact location? For example, could you stand at one end of a hallway and create an anchor at the other end without having been to that end before, assuming in this case that the hallway is small enough to see each end from the other end?

Edit:
On mind-altering magic: Is it possible to use magic to remove disorders? For example, could a skilled mage remove schizophrenia from someone?

Edit and unrelated:
Oh cool I gave Anubis a violet aura and just found out (looking into more details to come up with abilities) that Zadkiel is associated with the color violet.

1. You have to create the beacon where you are, and shoot it as a projectile toward your destination. Or you could try to teleport the beacon itself to the destination, provided that you've scanned the destination with your sixth sense already, but that's rather difficult and can usually only be done if the beacon is your soulshard, or something of similar complexity.

2. Only if the pre-altered mind prefers the altered state more than its original state. In other words, only if the patient wants to be cured. Otherwise, it'll be just like any other forced mental influence, and likely to wear off if you don't continuously reinforce it.

I gave my comments on the character sheets submitted so far, via PM. Also:

If your character is accepted, please put "[ACCEPTED]" at the beginning of the character sheet. Characters that do not have this tag should be considered not yet accepted.

Added this to the character sheet section of the signups.

Also, nothing says a human-spirit pair have to be in the same faction, but them being in different factions may make them distant from each other and have less opportunities to deepen their bond.

Added this to the character sheet.

EDIT: Also added this to the Millennial Union's goals:

Additionally, the Union is working with all manners of individuals and organizations in improving the quality of life in the Bastions, and pacifying the Wastes.

And clarified that the Union doesn't have an official army, and is only secretly preparing for war, i.e. the public doesn't know.

So is Zeus still available? I didn't see him on the list but I just wanted to make sure no one claimed the god of pervers...I mean the sky.

Yes, Zeus is still available. However, seeing that he's, you know, Zeus, he's gotta be one of the most powerful and influential spirits in existence. I can still let you play as him, but quite a bit of responsibility comes with that kind of power; I'll expect you to contribute pretty significantly to the plot as Zeus. Anyways, I just reserved Zeus for you.

Oh, and people don't need to add "[ACCEPTED]" to their accepted characters now. Now I have a section of accepted characters, and characters who appear in that list are considered valid.

EDIT: Added a couple more things to the first post:

Because the prevalence of [looking for Soul Pact partners], certain services have been created to make them easier, such as online advertisements and agents that seek out potential partners for clients as a paid service.

As explained in the Codex, projectile-type soulshards are no less viable than other types of soulshards, so don't be afraid to have those.

This is a new explanation that I added just now, in the section about soulshards, since @Sawdust thought having Zeus's thrown thunderbolts as soulshards wouldn't be viable.

Second edit: Just clarified that in the Possession section, you should not list your soulshards there. There's a separate section for soulshards for a reason.

Third edit: Added this to the Codex, section 2.2.1:

Generally, the effects [of a magic circuit] produced are more powerful if more mana is channelled through the circuit, but too much energy may be more unstable or difficult to control.

So you can put more mana into your spells to make them stronger. I thought something like that would be obvious, but other people might not be as well-acquainted with my setting, so I added that in.

Also added this paragraph:

Depending on the magic circuit’s construction and effects, certain types of mana may be more efficient than other types in activating the circuit. For example, a fire magic circuit will usually be more effective if powered by fire-aligned mana, and less effective if powered by ice-aligned mana. Certain mana types may even cause additional side effects, which may be beneficial or harmful. For example, channelling lightning-aligned mana through the aforementioned fire magic circuit may produce superheated electrical plasma instead, but end up frying the circuit. Very skilled magic users can control these effects to certain extents.
Note: The magic circuits inside souls generally won’t be permanently damaged by such side effects, unless soul overdrive occurs (see section 2.2.5).

Edit 5: Added another section, 3.11, to the Codex, describing the weaknesses of amorphous beings, e.g. beings made of fire or slime. Those were always in my setting, but I forgot to add them to the Codex until now.

Edit 6: Added this to section 1.2 of the Codex:

Note: Some forms of mana may resemble light, but actually isn’t, so they do not actually travel at the speed of light, unless they’re extremely powerful. Close to demideity power level (see section 2.2.3) is needed to do this to even small and light objects.

And this to section 3.4:

Also, as the magic comes into contact with its target, only the target’s surface layer will be affected, and the magic must try to force its way down to subsequent layers.

Edit 7: Added a few things to the inter-faction relations. More specifically, how the other factions treat the Mythic Accord, Millennial Union, and Wandering Souls.

Edit 8: Added this to section 1.2:

Similar to chemical reactions in real life, most forms of mana cause mana reactions when coming into contact with other substances, and hence produce their physical effects. The mana itself is “consumed”, converted into other forms and substances by the reaction, so that the reaction will eventually run out of the needed fuel and stop. It is thus difficult to produce a self-perpetuating mana reaction, and all reactions should be assumed to be limited in duration unless specified otherwise.

Also specified in section 2.2.1 that magic circuits simply convert input mana into further refined mana that have more specific effects. In other words, this is still limited by the mana reaction thing added above.

Edit 9: Added in the Codex that teleportation and wormhole creation becomes more difficult and costly if done too frequently or too far, due to hyperspace destabilization, and traces are more obvious and harder to cover up too. To avoid this, wait for hyperspace to restabilize before traveling through it again.

I've finished the profiles of my first spirit/human pair, Amatsu-Mikaboshi and Hanazawa Maria. I'll be controlling a number of other characters as well, and their profiles will come later.

@shagranoz@Bloodtypesuper@Dead Cruiser@ravenDivinity@FrozenEcstasy@Wishful Stray@DarkwolfX37@Arcanaut: Are you guys all still interested in the game? If so, I'd like you to start/continue working on your character sheets, or at least make an indication that you'll still be participating.

While there is nothing stopping more than two characters from forming a single Soul Pact with each other, the Codex states that such Pacts are much harder to improve upon than simpler two-people Pacts, not to mention the difficulty of building deep trust between multiple people. Additionally, if the total power of all humans in the multi-Pact is less than the total power of all spirits in the Pact, or vice versa, there will be the same problems as a normal Pact with partners of unequal power. Due to the relative inefficiency of multi-Pacts, channeling one's power through multiple weaker partners is rather noticeably less effective than through a single stronger partner. As such, while some spirits resort to multi-Pacts if they really cannot find suitable partners, the majority of Pacts are limited to one human and one spirit, out of practical concerns.

I changed the mechanics of Soul Pacts involving multiple partners. They're more viable now, if you really want to make one.

And added this to section 3.5 of the Codex:

Similarly, a mage cannot significantly manipulate the magic sent forth by another mage unless the first mage is overwhelmingly more powerful.

@JohnSolaris Question regarding magic. Can different kinds of energy be converted into mana? Like, if mage 1 was in possession of a steady and intense source of heat, could he convert thermal energy into magical energy? I mean, it doesn't violate conservation of energy. The fuel source would eventually run out. However if there was enough energy present it could pay back the energy cost to cast the spell until such a time as it does run out. And what about antimatter? How does that factor in? Are there magical effects that could replicate the effects of the substance? How would a massive influx of neutrino particles effect magic and hyperspace, if at all?

It can be done, but only if you know a spell that does this. Heat is fire elemental energy, so skilled fire mages can turn it into mana and absorb it.

And what about antimatter? How does that factor in? Are there magical effects that could replicate the effects of the substance?

No E = mc^2, so there can't be anything that causes matter-antimatter annihilation like in real life. Nor can there be anything that simply destroys matter while ignoring defensive integrity.

How would a massive influx of neutrino particles effect magic and hyperspace, if at all?

Neutrinos normally pass through other matter without any effects, in real life, so whatever analogue they have in my universe would be the same. It most likely wouldn't have any effects.
