I personal vote for a start after the crews formation, as in skips to after whenever after all the current characters are in their crew, and we start on their next adventure. Doing this can create a mixture of first impression and pre established relations between certain characters.

Me and @Renny both agree with no backstories. My reason is simple. We may have members who are just joining as well as people who have been in the crew for awhile. It is up to you guys to decide on this as well as talk it over with your respected captain so that the dates and other info adds up.
