Life Before The Apocalypse Born and raised in one of the largest cities in Iowa, Joel was instilled with traditional, midwestern values. Hospitality, warmness, and integrity were traits he was taught to exude at all times. Joel excelled in school, with reading levels above high school standards by 5th grade, he was often seen as a "Teacher's pet," due to conditioned traits and an eagerness to learn. But in contrast, he was rarely liked by his peers, primarily because of his disinterest in common fascinations that preoccupied the adolescent mind. While young, he displayed an enormous amount of interest in mythology, cryptids, and things of similar content. Often sitting alone contently, Joel would spend hours upon hours reading through anything he could find that made even the slightest reference to things of mythological nature.
In his freshman year of highschool, he and his family were forced to move to New York City. Joel often considers it to be a bittersweet experience, as it gave him enormous amounts of resources to further explore and develop his understanding of mythology; but it also provided a rather harsh insight into human socialization. Being the traditionalist he was, as well as a blooming historian, he was introduced to a quiet organization that taught its members the ways of a reactionary, which helped forge the way for him to develop an intense interest in sociology.
In '88-'90, he received multiple scholarships, as well as several grants, which paved the way for him to eventually attend Cornell, and after eleven years of incredibly impressive study, became a proud member of the faculty. After receiving a Ph.D in mythological history and symbolism, Joel spent another Eight years to academically study sociology, during which he climbed the heights of Mythological study to the position he holds proudly and quietly today, as one of the highest authorities of Mythological Research.
Life Leading Up To the Apocalypse // What Brings You to Altsoba Though He had remained rather silent in regards to Media and the public eye, Joel continued to further his research through the involvement and leading of research teams to uncover and inspect archeological sites of interest, leading to enormous findings of ancient symbolism and paganistic deities. Although he refuses to acknowledge his findings as facts, and often refers to them as musings of an old mind, his most iconic form of research involves the publishment of personal deductions and contemplation of things that could have inspired many iconic symbols and heroes of mythology.
Being such a highly respected member of mythological research, at the beginning of the apocalypse Joel was called upon to use his knowledge of mythology to attempt and find a possible cause of the apocalypse, and hopefully to determine a way to avoid it. While Joel does not personally believe it is anything humanity could deter, he understands that if the possibility exists it would comfort many to know that he is present and helping.
Theme Song: Fehu - Wardrunna
Deviances: An uncanny ability to vaguely translate/decipher meaning from symbolism of any sort.
Extra Information:"What use does the proverb "The Turtle and the Hare" hold for humanity? We are not mere quadrupeds racing, how does it apply to us?"
