Juana Perez
-Central City-
"Now, remember to stay safe, and look both ways before you cross the street," Mrs. Perez said, helping Juana fit her tool belt onto her waist. "And please try to get at least three meals a day, and..."
"Mama, I'll be fine!" Juana said, giving her mother a confident grin. "It won't be long 'til I have my first Pokémon at my side. I won't be out there alone for long, I promise."
Mrs. Perez fitted the buckle and stood up, before smiling back at her daughter. "I'm so proud of you; I'm sure you'll be able to handle yourself, míjita," she said, kissing both of Juana's cheeks.
Mr. Perez, Raticate, and Slurpuff looked on, an expression of prideful approval on Mr. Perez's countenance. Slurpuff couldn't help itself and scampered up to Juana, jumping on her and licking her with its sweet tongue.
"Augh! Slurpuff, I'm gonna go out smelling like meringue!" Juana laughed, attempting (and failing) to shield her face from the Fairy-type Pokémon's love. Slurpuff sat on Juana's chest and barked twice, before hopping off and giving her a friendly glance. Slurpuff then raced back towards Raticate. The black-furred rat chittered, though comically enough, tears were in its shimmering red eyes.
"Raticate, are you crying because I'm going or because there'll be nobody to feed you scraps when I'm gone?" Juana teased. Raticate gave Juana a very tsundere look of half-annoyance before letting the waterworks flow. "I'm kidding!" Juana said. "Mama, Papa, was Raticate always this emotional?"
"Raticate was crying at your cousin's wedding as well," Mr. Perez remarked. "Though we're not sure if it was because of the wedding itself, or the fact that the cake was so terrible. Who catered for Sophia's wedding again?"
"Some high-profile company from Castelia City. I swear, the signature ice cream is better than the pastry shops in that place..." Mrs. Perez remarked.
Raticate shuddered at the mention of that terrible cake. Who caters a wedding with fruitcake?
Mrs. Perez gave a glance of concern to Juana. "Are you sure you don't want to take either Slurpuff or Raticate with you? I'm sure they will help a lot..."
Juana shook her head. "Mama, if I'm going to do this, I'll have to learn on my own! As much as I love our Pokémon, there's always room for more in the family when it comes to them, isn't there?" she asked. "Besides, Slurpuff and Raticate listen to you much better than they do to me. Unless I bribe Raticate with candy."
Raticate turned beet red.
"You didn't forget anything, did you?" Mr. Perez asked. "Your Pokédex and Poké Ball?"
"Right here in the tool belt, Papa," Juana replied, patting the pouches on her hips.
"And you know you can stop by the Pokémarts or Pokémon Centers if you need help, right?" Mrs. Perez said.
"Mama, Papa, I'll be fine!" Juana said, before softening a bit. "Hugs?"
The family embraced.
"I love you, míjita," Mrs. Perez said. "Please contact us often!"
"If you ever need anything, just call," Mr. Perez agreed.
"Okay! I love you too!" Juana said, kissing both her parents before turning to head out the door. She put on her sneakers and walked out.
"Will she be alright?" Mrs. Perez asked.
"She's a strong young woman; she'll be fine," Mr. Perez replied.
Juana walked down the streets, ready to head out. She heard a faint rustling in the bushes. She walked over, flipping open her pouch in case that was a Pokémon and not some kid's stuck remote-controlled car.
A familiar magenta-colored fruit Pokémon with a white collar and a dented pale-green calyx emerged from the bushes, looking expectantly up at Juana.
"Oh, hey!" Juana said. "It's you!"
The Pokémon's yellow eyes smiled at Juana.
"I'm going out to journey across the region and learn about the world, or something," Juana explained, talking to the Pokémon. "I thought I'd run into you eventually."
The Pokémon looked up at Juana and settled in the bush as Juana talked. "Truth is I'm a little bit nervous," Juana said, her eyes darting around. "I'm going to be going pretty far away from home, aren't I? I hope you won't miss me too badly."
The Pokémon frowned, and its calyx drooped.
Juana brightened up. "Hmm... I haven't used my Poké Ball yet..." she remarked, pulling out the red-and-white capsule. "What do you say you tag along with me? I'm sure it'll be fun!"
The Pokémon bounced up and down, giving Juana a wide-mouthed smile.
However, before Juana could throw the ball, three gray-and-white starlings came down upon the berry Pokémon and started pecking furiously. The aroma of the Pokémon must have attracted predators.
"Hey! Get off!" Juana shouted, waving her hands furiously at the starlings. The birds squawked angrily at her; they flew at her face and pecked at her arms. Juana squealed in shock.
The berry Pokémon, seeing this long-time friend being pecked at by birds, shot out leaves that cut into the flock and drove them off.
Thankfully the birds didn't hurt Juana too badly; there were no puncture wounds, and the worst she got out of that was a bit disheveled.
But she was grinning at the berry Pokémon. "I take it that's a yes?"
She tossed the Poké Ball at the berry Pokémon, and the capsule opened up. In a flash of white light, the Pokémon disappeared inside, and without so much as a quiver, the ball clicked, and Juana picked up the capsule and peered inside. She could faintly make out the Pokémon she had befriended for so long, and her Pokédex buzzed in her pouch. She checked the Dex...
"Bounsweet, the Fruit Pokémon.
This Pokémon is always bouncing around energetically. Other Pokémon are attracted by its lively appearance and pleasant aroma."
"Bounsweet, huh?" Juana said. "Let's check you out..."
"Bounsweet. Ability: Oblivious. Moves recorded: Magical Leaf. Hasty nature," the display on the Dex said. "Female. Somewhat of a clown."
"So you're a goof too, huh?" Juana asked, winking at Bounsweet. "Is this some sorta symbolic hokey where we're kindred spirits and all that? I'd prefer we travel as friends; what do you think?"
Bounsweet winked back, its little tongue hanging out.
"Haha! Que linda," Juana remarked. She pressed the button on the capsule again, and Bounsweet popped out, before settling in Juana's arms. "Whoa, hey, pequeña, I've got to carry things in these arms," Juana said. Bounsweet nodded and hopped up on Juana's shoulder, balancing carefully on its tiny legs.
"I'd better go grab some more Poké Balls if I'm going to add 'mons to the team," Juana said to herself, hiking up her tool belt and striding towards the market.
