Tommy sighed in agreement. "Yeah, I could have told you some of the stories I'd heard asking around myself. But first we need to-" As the sun went down, a change came over Cici and she seemed to black out. Tommy reached over to shake her, but her eyes shot open shortly after, a milky white color. "Cici, are you-" Her answer both cut him off and confirmed that the answer to his question was not one he wanted to hear. But no matter what he did, he couldn't wake his friend up and he stared helplessly as the orbs and his friend disappeared into the woods. He knew he was tired, he hadn't yet gotten sleep from missing bed time the previous night, but he wasn't going to let his friend get away and allow the Fairies to toy with her. Pulling out Epsilon's pokeball, he brought out the Bulbasaur and looked at him.
"We've got to save our friend, agreed?" The Bulbasaur nodded fervently and Tommy smiled. "Then hit me with a shot of poison and lets go. I can't risk falling asleep." Epsilon hesitated, but hit his trainer with a weaker poison type move in the end. The effect would be enough to hold off the tricks of the Fairies and would take longer to become a health risk. Still, he couldn't let his trainer be out in the woods longer than one night before he knew he'd have to drag him back for treatment.
With one more look back at the safety of town, the pair set off after Cici, determined to find and free her however they had to.
“Two rare candies and a Pokeball,” Leisy told the kindly cashier as the lady scanned her Pokedex. “Thanks.”
Ella called Vivian during the two’s trek towards Stillwater. Twelve miles was a large distance to cover, and they’d made a stop for foodstuffs before setting out. Leisy picked up a sandwich and a few poffins for her Pokemon, figuring that a change in food ought to be interesting and that the dough-based rounds would expire slower than their fresh berry counterparts.
An hour or so into their trek, the sun was going down and their surroundings were growing dark. Shadows of tree branches danced among the blades of grass that littered the forest floor that was slowly morphing into swampland. According to the map on the Pokedex, the marshland was centered around a river that ran down from the mountains nearby. Stillwater was on the fringes of that marsh — fringes which, lucky for Ella and Leisy, were on the side of the marsh that was closer to Feyhollow.
“We’re over halfway there, but still pretty far,” Leisy said to Ella, checking the map on her Pokedex. Four miles left — too few to call it quits for the day, but too many to start relaxing. “Maybe we should take a dinner break — or eat on the way?”
“I’m with Juana on the ghosts — interesting Pokemon, no doubt. Never really considered getting one, though. Psychic types interest me more,” Cillian admitted as he polished off his waffle.
At Tora’s offer to pay, Cillian cocked a brow but slid his wallet back into his pocket. “Either you’re rich or awfully generous. I’m hoping for a mixture of the two — second one doesn’t help with the guilt of letting a girl pay for me,” he joked. “But thanks, Tora.”
Juana left for the Pokemart soon after, and since Cillian didn’t feel a pressing need to buy anything he didn’t follow. “Well, I think I’m going to go for some late-night training then,” Cillian said, sighing and slinging his bag over his shoulder. “Let’s meet up tomorrow morning in front of the Pokemon Center?” he called after to Juana, hoping the shorter girl heard him before turning back to Tora. “Wanna come along? Maybe even stick in a quick spar, if you’re up for it. Although it’s totally fine if you’d like to rest — you had a battle with Juana, right?”
Motioning to Kelby, Cillian adjusted the strap of his bag and made ready to head out.
Covering a yawn, Shanae closed the lid of her laptop and stowed it away in her bag to begin dinner. Pulling out a takeout box from her bag — a turkey-avocado sandwich from the corner shop in front of the station — Shanae’s eyes drifted to the boy in the seat across the aisle from her. Figuring that she could use the three-hour-ride to do some work, she’d been too engrossed in replying to emails and checking up with employees at Poke Corp to give her surroundings a good look. Now that she did, it struck Shanae that the silver-haired boy was probably a trainer as well. Why else would a young boy who looked just out of high school — or perhaps not even — be travelling from the lively Central to an obscure place like Ironforge? And, by the looks of his outfit — bandanna, hat, and wristband to start — she doubted he was an Ironforge-born. So trainer it was.
“Hey,” she said, sandwich in hand — but none in her mouth — as she turned to the boy, “Pokemon trainer, right? Me too — Shanae Eller, nice to meet you,” Shanae said with a friendly grin as she reached out a hand to the silver-haired boy. “So, tell me: Why’re you heading to Ironforge? Any specific Pokemon you’re interested in? Or just another stop in the journey?” Shanae paused to take another bite of her sandwich before she continued. “Personally, I’m going there to visit a few friends and check out the new architecture.”
Tora chuckled a little at Juana's antics, however, the tall woman wasn't particularly excited that they would be staying another night. Though, she supposed it was dangerous to wander through the forest after dark. Never know what could happen, and if the locals are even scared, then they should probably take that as a warning. Waving farewell to Juana as the green haired girl ran off, Tora turned her attention to Cillian as he spoke. Simply giving a knowing smile. "I just enjoy helping in any way I can." she answered, motioning for Archie to get off, in which the Growlithe jumped off and stretched out, before the black haired woman stood up.
"Sure, I'll accompany you, though I do not think it is wise to tire both of our teams when it's getting dark out. Never know what could happen in these woods." Tora spoke before walking outside. "But I wouldn't mind watching. Maybe after your Pokemon could use a massage and some home made Pokemon Food for their hard work?" she offered with a friendly smile. Archie giving a excited yip at the mention of food.

“A massage?” Cillian echoed as he led the way out of town and into the woods. He didn’t have any particular destination in mind, but he knew he wanted to get a distance from town — perhaps find a wild Pokemon or two to spar as well. “I think I vaguely remember reading something about that once — Pokemon really like it, right? Pretty impressive that you’re able to give massages and make Pokemon food — any other hidden talents I should know about?” Cillian joked as they came to a clearing.
Figuring that the shadowy bushes just served to provide possible enemies to train against, Cillian turned to his Mudkip and waved him to the side. “Stay back for a second, Kelby. I’m going to release your new teammate — the Scyther — and I need you on damage control.” Figuring that silence was better than protest, Cillian stepped back and unhooked the third Pokeball on his belt. “Scyther! C’mon out!”
The Scyther appeared in a flash of red, but this time the Pokemon stayed where it was summoned. Rather than running, the Scyther stood in its spot three feet away from itrs trainer, eyes trained on the white-haired boy in a distrustful glare.
“Alright. First part done,” Cillian said with a wry grin as the bushes around the two trainers and their Pokemon rustled. Out popped a Chespin, a Bulbasaur, and a Venipede. “Second part: actually getting him to fight,” Cillian said with a grin. The Scyther gave the Pokemon around him an unimpressed look, not moving a muscle.
Raven turned his gaze from the window to Shanae with a curious glance, normally he was the one that started conversations. He'd been a little lost in thought staring out the window truth be told. However this women's greetings, along with her vibrant eyes, brought him back. "Got me in one." Raven said in response to her query as to him being a trainer, accepting the handshake. "As for my reason to travel, other than letting me meet colorful people like you, I'm simply wandering about to be honest. No Pokemon I'm looking for in particular either, I just catch whatever stands out. Haven't made very much progress on that front but I don't mind." Raven said cheerily. His Weedle was still hiding in his Pokeball as Raven figured the little guy wouldn't like the tram very much and Oliver because he didn't want the usually hyperactive pokemon bothering anyone.
"Dinner break's a good idea," Ella said, looking around through the evening darkness for a rock or tree stump to sit on, as she and Leisy advanced into the marshland. She laughed. "How did we let it get this late? Did I really spend most of today sleeping?" She'd needed it, after the past few nights.
Something moved in the shadows. "Did you see that?" Ella asked, eyes wide. She stared into the swampland, but the only movement was that of swaying branches and tall grass. "Ehh, maybe I was just imagining things..."
With an unearthly wail, something flew at her in a blur of black cloth, a glaring red orb lighting up its skull-like face.
Ella backed away in surprise, letting out a squeal - not of fear, but of unbridled adoration, as if a baby Skitty had just run out at her.
"It's so cute!!" she shouted, beaming from ear to ear. "Look at it! Look at that face! Such a pretty little eye!!"
It was the Duskull's turn to draw back in shock, before sulking at its complete and utter failure to scare her. A few seconds later, it turned its scarlet glare back on Ella, bobbing in the air.
"Huh? Do you want to battle?" The Duskull nodded, its light brightening. "Ok!" She let out Treasure, who sized up her opponent. "You alright with this, Treasure?" With an affirmative "Trub", the Trubbish slowly approached the other Pokemon, who bobbed about even more with excitement.
"Alright! Treasure, use Sludge!" Ella called. "Ah! Careful! Behind you!" Before Treasure could do anything, a shadow lengthened and struck her from behind. Standing her ground, Treasure spewed a blast of sludge at the Duskull, sending it flying.
As it floated forward, Ella took a Pokeball from her pocket. "Hey! Want to join my team?" Flicking its red gaze from the trainer to the Pokeball, then back, it considered her question before nodding again. A jolt of excitement ran through Ella. This Duskull saw her as a strong trainer, but could she live up to that first impression?
"Just don't prank my other Pokemon, ok?" She threw the Pokeball, watching it open, pull the Pokemon inside, and rock about on the ground. Ding. The screen of her Pokedex lit up.
"Yayyy!!!!" Skipping over to the Pokeball, she picked it up, a wide smile across her face. "Welcome to my team, Brighteye!"
Once again, Cici was perfectly at home, with beings that wouldn't leave her. Meandering through the wilderness, she sang the song that had come to her the previous night, drawing those familiar lights closer to her. Morelulls and Shiinotics. Her friends. Something was wrong, though. There were fewer of them than there had been yesterday.
"Those trainers..." she said, her voice soft. "They were hurting you, weren't they?" She swept her moonlit gaze around the group of remaining fairies. "I won't let anyone hurt you again."
It sounded like something somebody else had said... No, like something she'd said, earlier, to one of her Pokemon. A part of her mind stirred awake.
"No! You're not harming my friends!"
A shape emerged from the shrubbery, approaching with light footsteps. The stars and moon lit up pink-and-white fur, innocent blue eyes, flowing ribbons.
As one of the ribbons wrapped around her arm, Cici relaxed, letting the Sylveon take her further into Feyhollow wilds.
"I know you won't harm me..." she mumbled. "It's other humans who will."
While Ella’s shock had sent Leisy spinning around in alarm, it was the deathly cold streak of slime rolling up Leisy’s back that froze her up. Shivering, Leisy turned around slowly, coming face-to-face with a pair of big, red eyes and a wild grin.
“Aah!” Leisy shrieked, ducking and scrambling to a safe distance. A cackle of delight was heard from the grinning face, and a whoosh in the air told Leisy that she was being followed by her phantom pursuer. “Bidein, Tackle!” Leisy shouted, mind whirling as she scrambled for a safe distance. The Fletchling took to the air, but the ghost-type in pursuit was too fast. The cheshire-esque face was waiting for Leisy in front of the bushes she’d hoped would provide her refuge.
“Blergh,” the ghost-type said, purple smog abound as it stuck out its tongue and popped its eyes in a comedic way. A brief silence ensued, and the ghost Pokemon allowed its face to return to normal before drifting over to the girl to check on his new playmate. “Gastly?”
“Huh. That was… unexpected,” Leisy said with a puzzled frown, looking the ghost-type up and down as she pulled out her Pokedex. “Gastly, huh?” The Gastly grinned, doing a slow three-sixty in the air to show its delight in being correctly identified. “For a ghost, you’re awfully—” Leisy paused to search for the word—“happy.”
“Gas, Gastly!” the Gastly said, grinning and preparing another lick. An angry Quick Attack came out of nowhere, driving the Gastly back in surprise. The attacker — a Fletchling — chirped angrily as it reclaimed its perch on the girl’s shoulder.
“Hold on,” Leisy said, eyes wide as she stared at the Gastly. “Did that move just… pass through the you?”
The Gastly nodded with a proud grin, drifting forwards and through Leisy and Bidein.
“Wow,” Leisy said in admiration. Grinning, the Gastly drifted over to the bird Pokemon on the girl’s shoulder and licked him, successfully paralyzing him. A scramble for both her Pokemon and her Pokemon’s Pokeball ensued, and Leisy didn’t even notice when the Gastly claimed its own Pokeball still inside the girl’s bag.
“Paralysis, a condition that causes a Pokemon to be unable to attack a quarter of the time,” Leisy read from her Pokedex with a worried frown. “I’ve got to get you to a Pokemon Center then, Bidein,” Leisy said, clutching her Pokeball and rising from where she’d landed after her dive for the falling bird. Looking around, she noticed that the ghost Pokemon had disappeared. Thank Arceus I don’t have to deal with him anymore, Leisy thought in relief as she rejoined Ella. “Time to go then, Ella?” she asked, noticing the girl’s victorious grin. “Oh, congratulations! The Ghost-type paralyzed Bidein and left, so I’ll have to drop by the Pokemon Center soon.”
“Good thing you caught me on one of my more colorful days then,” Shanae said with a laugh, tugging at her neon blue bomber jacket. “I hardly ever get a chance to wear this old thing,” she said with a wistful smile, mind skipping back to the last time she’d worn the familiar article of clothing. Back when she was still rambunctious and rearing for battle, not a thought about responsibilities or forging relationships.
Looking at the boy again, Shanae noticed that he didn’t have any Pokemon out. Polite as well, she mused to herself. Sure there weren’t any rules against having your Pokemon out on the tram, but locals and frequent borders knew better than to let their Pokemon sit in their laps or — Arceus forbid — the seat next to them. Fur and other rubbings aside, there was the matter of courtesy. Shanae, for one, didn’t care how respectable or pretty a champion’s Ninetails could be if it took up the entire hallway with its silky tails. She herself had refrained from bringing her Pokemon out — even silent, broody Ebon — because of this.
“Attention passengers, we will be arriving at the Ironforge station in approximately fifteen minutes. All passengers disembarking may exit through the back doors of the compartment. New passengers will arrive through the front doors.”
“Well, that’s our stop,” Shanae said, stretching her arms and checking that her bag was buckled, closed, and zipped. “What are you planning to do — turn in for the night or go around for some late night hunting?” Shanae paused, frowning. “Also, I never got your name.”
As Cici went to sit down at the foot of a tree, that green light enveloped her again. Her legs gave out. The Sylveon used her ribbons to catch her, letting the musician rest against the tree. The light around Cici disappeared, and that of the Morelulls and Shiinotics brightened.
"You want me to play again, don't you?" she mumbled.
Moving slowly as if her limbs were weighed down, Cici tried to reach for her guitar. That was when it happened. A Pokeball at her belt shook, bursting open. "Kri! Krick-kri!" Giving an angry chirp, Cadence jabbed the other three Pokeballs with her stubby arms, letting out her teammates.
"What...?" Cici blinked and stared with wide, suddenly blue eyes. "No! Watch out!" The Morelulls clustered around, releasing spores. Cici tried to stand up, only to slump with a groan. She felt a soft grip on her arm, and her tension melted away. "Don't start another fight," she said to her Pokemon. "There's no need to."
As the Pokemon started to drift off to sleep, Forte struggled to stay awake. With an ear-splitting yell, he started jumping around, attacking the Morelulls in a frenzy.
"Aah!" Cici jolted out of her dreamlike state, wrenching herself free from the Sylveon's grasp and covering her ears. She gazed around in horror. She'd ended up here once more, somehow, and whatever had brought her back to this place was threatening to pull her under again... While Forte's Uproar attack held off the effect, Cici took the opportunity to try standing up.
The Sylveon, wincing from the noise, wrapped her feelers around Cici, pulling her back down. Cici twisted and turned, slackened - and snapped to her senses as her attacker shrieked. The grip loosened. Cici looked over her shoulder to see Dulcet, beak glowing white, pecking and scratching at the ribbons so fast she moved in a blur.
Fury Attack. This had to be Fury Attack.
Letting Cici slump to the ground, the Sylveon looked from her torn feelers to Dulcet. She let out a furious growl, eyes narrowed, fur standing on end, pink energy crackling around her. A wave of the energy slammed into Dulcet and Forte, knocking them flying.
"Forte! Dulcet!" Cici crawled towards the two injured Pokemon. They were still breathing, but barely able to move. Ligeia and Cadence both squealed as they rushed forward. "All of you, return! That Sylveon's too strong! Aagh!" She ducked out of the way of an errant Moonblast, managing to quickly return all her Pokemon. Some of the Morelulls hid, some tried to calm the Sylveon down, and some followed Cici as she half-stumbled, half-crawled away.
Her strength was running out. She had to get her friends to a Pokecentre before the spell could take hold again... She fell to her hands and knees.
Sombody helped her up, but this time it wasn't the Sylveon. Human hands grasped her arms. Cici glanced from side to side. A young girl and a boy who looked to be in his teens supported her. Both of them studied the newcomer with white shining eyes, just like she currently had.
"I said I wouldn't let anyone hurt them..." she murmured.
Ella whirled around, that look of delight returning to her face. "Another one! And it's so cheerful!" Her stare became one of shock as the wild Gastly licked Bidein, causing him to fall from Leisy's shoulder. "Ah! Bidein!" Putting away the Pokeball that contained her newest friend, Ella ran towards Leisy, Treasure waddling after her. The bird was still concious, but clearly having trouble moving. She glanced all around, but there was no sign of the Gastly.
She checked the map on her Pokedex. "It shouldn't take much longer to get there," she said, letting Treasure back into her Pokeball and continuing through the tall grass towards their destination. "And when we next get the chance, maybe it's more than just potions we should buy."
Juana decided to take a short walk. She noticed, as she passed by the plant-covered missions board, that there was a small poster stapled to the moist wood.
"Lost dog?" Juana muttered. Bounsweet leaned on Juana's shoulder, peering at the accompanying image. "Wait a hot second, isn't that the Granbull Tora and I were..."
A look at the description confirmed Juana's concerns. "Butch... That was his name, right?" Juana pounded her fist into her palm. "Well, there's no way I'm letting such a nice dog and a nice girl separate for this long! I'd better go see what's up!"
Juana made a beeline for the Pokémon Center, where the little girl, whose name was apparently Penny, was standing with her mother, weeping.
"What's up, pobrecita?" Juana asked, sitting next to Penny and her mom.
"Her Granbull ran off into the forest," Penny's mother replied. "We don't know where it went."
The rest of the trek — fueled by Leisy’s panic — went quickly. Soon enough the girls made it to the dark, murky township that was Stillwater. The air around the outskirts of the town felt heavier with both humidity and something else — something ominous. Still, the girls pushed on until the bright-colored rim of the Pokemon Center was visible. Gathering up the rest of her energy, Leisy jogged the last part of her journey and, panting, pulled out her Pokeballs one by one from her bag.
“Can I — thanks,” Leisy said tiredly as the old man at the counter nodded, popping the five Pokeballs into the machine behind him. Wait, Leisy thought, brows creasing as she counted her Pokeballs again, five? Taking a deep breath, Leisy recounted the Pokeballs slowly by name. Bidein, Naunet, Devinco, Cassia… But who’s that?
“Here you are,” the man said, handing Leisy her Pokemon. Looking behind the black-haired girl to Ella, the man grinned a friendly, gap-toothed grin. “You want your Pokemon healed up too, girlie? Rooms're in the back. It's awfully late out to be running around, so you two'd best rest up before the morning. Especially if you're thinking'a heading outta town.”
Leisy, however, only half-heard these words. Rather, she was busy fumbling through her Pokeballs. When her fingers finally grasped on the newest Pokeball, Leisy brought it up to the lights, trying to make out the Pokemon inside. “Just check 'yer Pokedex, girl. Pokemon 'ya own are all registered there,” the old man said from the counter.
“Oh, thanks,” Leisy said with relief, realizing that she wouldn’t have to let the Pokemon out to see what it was. Pulling out her Pokedex and checking, she realized that the Gastly from earlier hadn’t disappeared — it’d stuffed itself into a Pokeball in her bag without her knowing. “Ella, the Gastly,” Leisy said, looking up, “it caught itself.”
Tora smiled a little in response. "Well I do wish to become a Pokemon Breeder, taking good care of Pokemon comes with the job." she answered, before watching as the white haired boy sent out a scyther. By the looks of things, not really a fully tamed one. Which wasn't too odd since Scyther are naturally a bit aggressive. But this one was actually on the more calmer side compared to most of the species. Not outright attacking Cillian was a start.
"That's quite a nice Scyther. Though it make take a little bit for him to fight for you. Scyther tend to need to respect you first as a leader of the group before they are willing to follow orders." Tora mused a bit, taking out her sketch book and starting to draw on it. Releasing her other Pokemon to relax around the area. Sirius staying close to its trainer, while Pezi cheerfully bounded around.
Archie on the other hand, bounded over to the scyther. Sniffing at the much bigger Pokemon, giving a loud yip and a friendly wag of her tail before ears perking at the Pokemon. She quickly charged over, barking. The others nervously shuffled away from the dangerous fire Pokemon, but Venipede didn't seem to be having none of it. The bug hissed, its stingers waving threatenly before bravely charging at the puppy Pokemon. Tora glanced up, to see the Venipede, a Pokemon that were highly aggressive and had pretty deadly poison and paraylzing abilities. Her Growlithe however dodged the sudden poison sting, flames snorting out of her nostrils before spewing a torrent of flames from her mouth. KO'ing the bug/poison type with ease.
"Archie, you shouldn't pick fights like that. You could have gotten hurt." Tora scolded, but Archie just trotted over and barked at her. Soon digging at her bag and grabbing a pokeball between her teeth, then trotting over to the barbecued Venipede and tapping the Pokeball against it. The bug disappeared inside before rocking once, twice, thrice, then dinging in a complete capture. Giving a howl of victory, the fire type proudly trotted back and dropped the Pokeball in Tora's lap.
Tora blinked a little before chuckling and patting the Growlithe on the head. "I'm starting to wonder who's the Pokemon trainer here." she mused before picking up the Pokeball and releasing it.
The Venipede reappeared, burnt up and tired, but still angrily hissed at the Growlithe. "I'm sorry about that Venipede. Archie just likes to battle a little." Tora said, carefully picking up the bug and rubbed her hands against the shell gently. Trying to soothe the burns a little. The Venipede hissed but didn't sting, mostly just glared at the Growlithe. "How about we name you... Rachni?" she hummed, the now named Venipede just snorting in response.

Epsilon lead the way for his trainer, having lived in Feyhallow woods for all his life, and made sure to avoid all the haunts of the most dangerous Fairy types besides those that they hunted for. And soon enough, some indication that they were on the right track appeared in the form of haunting lights and..."Pokemon attacks?" He knew that sound well and he turned to Epsilon. "I know it's a draining move, buddy, but think you could prep a sludge bomb for me?" The Bulbasaur nods and his mouth buldges as they move closer. He could feel the effects of the Fairies sleep inducing moves tugging at him, but he had Epsilon's poison to counter it. Through the Morelulls he could see the Sylveon who was the ringleader and he could see Cici with her strange eyes and two other people with the same eyes.
"I said I wouldn't let anyone hurt them..." she murmured. If Tommy had to guess, she meant her Pokemon, who he'd heard her return. And as he saw an opportunity, he took it.
"Epsilon, now! Hit the Sylveon with Sludge Bomb!" The Bulbasaur obliged, leaping up into the air and unleashing it's attack. The suddenness of his appearance and that of Epsilon bought Tommy and his friend the time they needed to land the attack, sending the already wounded Sylveon flying and scattering the Morelulls, many of whom began succumbing to the poisonous effects of the AOE bomb immediately, falling still and silent. He hoped the suddenness of his appearance would bring Cici out of her stupor, but he wasted no time in any case.
He pointed to Epsilon and indicated the Sylveon again. "Stun spore before it recovers!" The Bulbasaur obliged right away, blasting the still recovering Fairy Type and keeping it from moving until it was turned over to the proper authroities. Epsilon, however, remained on edge and used a couple of sludges to scatter the remaining Morelulls to the four winds before Tommy approached his friend. "Hey, you alright? You with us again, Cici?"
“Thanks,” Cillian told Tora before turning towards the two Grass-type Pokemon in front of him. Chespin and Bulbasaur. The former was a bit newer, but the second definitely had more fame. Venusaur held less prestige than the legendary Fire-Flying dual that was Charizard, but Cillian still knew a fighter when he saw one, and this one was by no means as happy-go-lucky as his Charmander. “Scyther,” Cillian said, looking towards the Bug-type at his side — a typing that meant it held the advantage. However, that advantage would be useless if the Pokemon refused to cooperate — which the Pokemon didn’t seem like it wanted to do.
Frowning, Cillian turned to Kelby. “Hey Kelbs, I know this is gonna be a hard battle for you, but you mind stepping in?” Cillian asked, looking down at the Mudkip. The Mudkip snorted, walking forwards with an air of confidence as the Scyther looked on in vague interest. A smile on his face, Cillian pointed at the two Grass-type Pokemon that were done waiting. “Kelby, Growl!”
The Mudkip followed, leaning back on his heels and producing a sharp, rasping noise from his throat that caused the Grass-types to tense up as wariness crept into their gaze. “Follow up with a Foresight, and then Tackle on the Chespin!” Cillian shouted, knowing that his Pokemon had a limited number of moves to use. The Mudkip’s main attacks consisted of Water- and Ground-type moves, and neither of those would be of any use here.
Kelby’s eyes glowed briefly before dimming and disappearing as he sprang forward into action, smashing into the Chespin. “Good, keep going! Tackle again!” Cillian shouted, keeping an eye on the Bulbasaur that was watching carefully, looking for an opening to strike as Kelby kept up the Tackles on the Chespin.
“Protect!” Cillian shouted when the Chespin moved to retaliate. A deflected Vine Whip withdrew itself into the Chespin’s arms, and a final Tackle took the green-capped Pokemon down. “Good, now—”
A Vine Whip from behind snapped down on the blue-and-orange Water-type, sending him reeling back. “Kelby!” Cillian shouted in alarm. The Mudkip hopped back onto his feet, eyes fierce. “All right. Tackle,” Cillian called, readying a Pokeball.
Another smash and a beam or red light later, Cillian was picking up his fourth Pokemon. “Good job, Kelby,” Cillian said, rubbing the Mudkip’s head. Pawing at his trainer’s hands, the Mudkip sulked away with a haughty huff. Still, Cillian knew that beneath all that arrogance the Water-type was proud as well. Cillian looked towards the Scyther. The Bug-type immediately looked away with a mask of disinterest, and Cillian sighed and returned his Scyther before walking over to Tora. “Hey — the Venipede, right? Good job!” Cillian said, covering a yawn as he stretched his arms. “I’m beat, so let’s head back to the Center and crash for the night? Juana’s probably back there sleeping already,” he said, leading the way back while clipping his newly-filled Pokeball onto his belt.
Fire-, Water-, and Grass-types all down. A Bug-Flying type as well. What next then? Cillian wondered to himself all the way until he fell asleep.
Cici shook her head, eyes closed tight. "Nobody hurts them..."
Her eyes snapped open, blue again. "Nobody hurts my friends!"
It was only by keeping her Pokemon's wellbeing at the forefront of her mind that she was able to pull free, falling to the ground in front of Tommy. Fatigue took over again. She propped herself up, staring at him with her shining white gaze.
"You came to take me away..." she said. "You came for me this time. But would you keep helping me in a year's time? Five years? If anything happened to me then, would you even know? Or care? Humans are fickle beings. I've been let down once. I won't let it happen again."
Before she could say anything else, the green glow reappeared around her. She let out a cry as something began to rapidly drain what little energy she had, pulling streams of the light towards it.
A Shiinotic emerged from the greenery, its glow much brighter than that of any of the others, and becoming steadily more intense.
In another burst of light, all four or Cici's Pokemon appeared, ready to defend their trainer even in their weaknened state. Either the Pokeballs had been jarred by the ruckus, or the Pokemon had somehow heard the commotion.
"No!" Cici yelled, staring at Forte and Dulcet, who looked ready to collapse. Beside her, the two children fell to their knees, surrounded by the same green glow. It wasn't the Sylveon who had put the curse on her, or on the others... This absurdly powerful Shiinotic in front of her must have grown bored of her and the other captives, deciding they were more trouble than they were worth.
As it readied a ghostly purple beam - Confuse Ray - to fire at Epsilon, Cici had an idea. "Dulcet... if you can, Safeguard," she called. Blue force fields appeared around all of the humans and their Pokemon. "Now, Ligeia! Sing!" The Igglybuff started singing a soothing melody. Behind the barrier, which blocked the effect, Cici watched the Shiinotic drift into a deep sleep.
It was exhausting just to turn her head to look at Tommy. "Quick! Use a Poison-type attack!" she said, glancing at Epsilon. Surely a Poison-type move would do a considerable amount of damage, even if this Shiinotic did seem much stronger than the others - just how many people had it drained?
Ella nodded as the old man asked her if she wanted to heal her Pokemon. "Yeah, thanks," she said, handing over the Pokeballs. "And we were going to call it a night anyway. No matter what an exciting place this seems." The man's warning was worth listening to - Ella had grown up in a town that could be dangerous enough at night, after all. Still, she couldn't wait to explore the next day.
"Huh?" She looked over at Leisy in surprise. "I didn't know Pokemon actually did that! I guess now we've both got Ghost-types, we'll have to train them not to cause too much trouble," she said with a slight laugh. "As awesome as they are, they really do seem to like their pranks." That was when she realised something. "Hey! At this rate, you'll go up a rank as a trainer in no time!"
“‘Go up in rank,’”” Leisy repeated, eyes wide. She’d completely forgotten about trainer ranks, having been too caught up in the events of the previous few days.
So much had happened — she’d caught four, arguably five, Pokemon and met many a trainer. In the face of everything, ranking up seemed so insignificant, but Leisy’s brain told her that such wasn’t true. Ranking up would open new doors — she’d be able to evolve Pokemon with evolution shards, catch stronger Pokemon with Great Balls, purchase more efficient potions like Super Potions. All of these doors would be open to her when she caught her sixth Pokemon, and it was a scary thought.
“I—I think I need some time. And some sleep,” Leisy said with a tired smile, signing into the Pokemon Center with her Pokedex. “See you in the morning? And yes, I do think we’ll be needing that training.”
Once in her room, Leisy took a quick shower in the rather worn-looking bathroom. After she'd finished, Leisy looked at the five Pokeballs she’d set on top of the bedside drawer, a pensive frown on her face. Time really is moving fast huh. I guess… I guess I should step up my game as well.
Drying her hair off with a towl, Leisy plopped into bed and turned the light off, turning onto her side to stare at the five red caps glistening in the moonlight until she fell asleep.
Solid, smooth, white—like packed snow. Olivie stared at it, marveling at the brilliant ivory sheen that practically radiated from it, but before long she grew bored. Idly she stood up from her crouched position and took a look around. In every direction, the ground sloped away, but somehow the girl got the feeling that she wasn't standing on some snowy mount. Besides, she didn't feel cold at all; in fact, a pleasantly warm air lay upon her, if anything. Much hotter, she guessed, and the atmosphere might become sweltering. As she looked around, Olivie realized that her surroundings defied description. Inky darkness stretched in all directions, but by peered down around the rounded ground's curviture she could tell from the white glint that pitch-black water extended below in parallel to the starless night sky above. Olivie did not like the lack of stars. Their absence made her feel alone until, with a jump, she remembered that nothing about her current situation was possible.
She couldn't remember coming here, but she could remember going to sleep bone-tired in a room belonging to a run-down Pokemon Center in a place called Stillwater. “Oh. I'm dreaming.” How bizarre. Aside from the strangeness of the earth, sea, and sky, things seemed remarkably ordinary. The uneasiness that prickled her hinted that this might not be her first dream. In quick succession, Olivie pinched herself, did a jumping jack, and brushed out her hair with her hands. How real everything felt! ”Looks like I'm not wakin' up anytime soon.” Wondering what lay in store for her, the brunette scanned the only discernible thing in sight: the ground beneath her feet. The perfectly spherical island she stood upon displayed a variety of craters, big and small. It also gave off the only light in the otherwise empty void that stared back at her no matter which way she turned. ”Oh, it's the moon. Hah. I'm on the moon.” Olivie found that discovery pretty silly. Unacknowledged by the beauteous bruiser, a lightheadedness settled over her akin to giddiness. Due to the absurdity of this place, maybe, she found it hard to focus. She found herself staring at her clothing, noticing that it was as featurelessly white as the moon.
Turning once more to look for anything of interest, Olivie spotted something at the edge of her vision. Another few seconds of twisting and pivoting finally brought the anomaly into view. A stretched orb, reminiscent of a golden drop, floated above the ground, suspended by a long, white cord like a lure on a fishing line. Olivie reached out and grabbed it before giving it a tug. Instantly, a yanking pain blossomed on her upper forehead, and when the girl reached up to massage the area, she found a stalk protruding from her head. Grinning like an idiot at the ridiculousness of it all, she confirmed the presence of two of the chitinous stalks that stuck out of her hair and curled downward to hang close to her ankles. ”What the hell? Antennae. I musta had some bad water or somthin'...”
Her distraction came to an abrupt end when the moon gave a violent jerk. Olivie fell to her knees, and a curtain of white shrouded her. For a moment she remained still in surprise, but a tentative hand poked through the curtain easily. Its touch, and a matching sensation in her scalp, gave rise to another befuddling conclusion. My hair? A moment passed before the nineteen-year-old brushed it back. With her vision restored, she beheld a scene that left her speechless.
The dark waters lapping at the shore of the moon had risen. Only a few meters in every direction remained to Olivie now, but it wasn't a sense of impending doom that made her quiver in fear. Two enormous hands made of the black water, with claws for fingers, rested upon the ground. They belonged to a massive, formless specter that rose halfway from the depths, a living shadow that loomed over her. In its twisted head was set a single, sea-blue eye, more brilliant and piercing than an icicle, and around its head swirled a mane of snowy white. Olivie's fiery spirit, drowned by the wave of terror washing over her from that horrible eye, availed her nothing. She cowered, tears streaming down her cheeks, until a torrent of purple spilled from the ghastly being's mouth toward her. It took the form of a hundred clawed hands reaching toward her, and the sight of them kicked into action all the will to live the girl could muster. She leaped up and lashed out with her hands, fists of gold flashing and forth with amazing speed, but she could not hold back the tide. The hands seized her, binding her like chains, and she could only watch as the horror's true arms dug their talons into the moon and began to pry it apart. From within the white orb a violet luster shone forth—Olivie instantly knew it was something precious. Unable to scream, she could only watch as the darkness pulled the giant egg apart and, in a maelstrom of darkness, swallowed all light.
”Waaaaahaaahaaa!” Olivie shrieked, jerking upright. For a moment she couldn't move, and with furious strength she tore at her bindings. The bedsheets gave way, and Olivie tumbled onto the floor. She scrambled to her feet and stood, her chest heaving. One step at a time she affirmed that all she'd seen had been nothing more than a dream. No ghost...check. No antennae...check. No long white hair...check. No moon...she tottered to the window and pulled it open. Through it she could see Stillwater, a quiet and mostly dark village, and above it shone countless stars. For a moment Olivie admired them, having never seen them before because of city lights, but the sight of the moon made her shake. After closing the window, Olivie made her way back to bed. ”Bad dream...” she mumbled. ”Bad dream.” This time, she had a hard time falling asleep.
"Night!" Ella called as Leisy disappeared into one of the rooms. After retrieving her Pokeballs and checking into a room herself, Ella flopped onto the bed, resting her aching feet.
The peeling wallpaper and raggedy bedsheets gave the room a cosy charm. Already, Ella knew she'd like this place - but the main reason she and Leisy had travelled to this town wasn't the atmosphere. There was still a Pokemon in the hands of thieves, a Pokemon she and her friends would have to become strong enough to save.
Once she'd changed into her nightdress, Ella climbed into the bed and stared at the ceiling, wondering how Vivian was doing. Her worries threatened to keep her awake, but the journey had worn her out so much that it wasn't long until the sound of the river lulled her to sleep.
Tommy wasted no time when his friend called out and nodded to Epsilon. "Alright buddy, one more time! Sludge the bugger then hit him with Stun Spore!" Epsilon leapt into battle and fired off the poison attack, knocking the Shiinotic backwards and stopping it from draining it's victims any further and then unleashes a stun spore before it can recover. "Finishing move's all yours, Cici!" Epsilon should looked more fatigued than he did, but Tommy got the sense that running from and fighting off those Spearow built up his endurance considerably.
Before the weakened Shiinotic could come to, Cici called out.
"Quick, Cadence! Use Struggle Bug!"
Her already aching body became agonisingly tense from a mix of fear and effort to resist the curse as she watched Cadence totter forward. With a harsh chirp, the feisty little bug fired several green bursts at the Shiinotic, which swayed as it began to wake up.
"Again! One more hit should be enough!" Cici shouted. Pink energy crackled and sparked as the Shiinotic tried to make a move, but the Struggle Bug attack had diminished its strength. Putting in as much effort as she could, Cadence shot forth another blast. The Shiinotic toppled, its glow dimming as it fell unconscious.
The effect was instant. Cici suddenly felt free, as if chains tethering her to this place had been cast off. "It's gone," she said, gasping in relief. "The curse, it's broken." The two children stared at each other with clear brown eyes before hugging.
"Millie! Millie, are you alright?" the teenager asked. "I was searching all over for you!"
The little girl stared at her surroundings, then down at her torn, dirty clothes. "Benji?" She looked up at her brother. "I'm fine, but... What happened?" She gaped in shock at the sight of the injured fairies. "Those Pokemon, they're hurt!"
"Those Pokemon are the reason we got stuck here," Cici groaned, crawling forward to check on her team. She gave a weak smile. "That was great work, all of you." Returning all four of them, she tried to stand up, only succeeding with the help of the children.
At the sight of Tommy's unhealthy pallor, she glanced from him to Epsilon, then back, putting two and two together. "You didn't... Please tell me you didn't..." She didn't know if Dulcet would be able to manage a Heal Bell.
"Well, let's not hang around here any more." Her attention shifted to the Sylveon and the Shiinotic, who both lay unresponsive. "But what's going to happen with these two?"
Tommy opted not to answer the question that Cici was attempting to get him to though she'd figured it out herself and instead picked up the paralyzed Sylveon while Epsilon prepped a Sludge in his mouth and picked up the Shiinotic with his vines. "We take them to the authorities in town, let them decide. But, I think after I get some more experience under my belt, I can at least reform this Sylveon. That Shiinotic though..." He remembered many of the towns people saying that they'd lost loved ones to this crew of people snatchers. After a moment of deep thought and a sigh, he turned to Epsilon.
"Alright, Epsilon, I think you and I both know what we have to do here." The Bulbasaur nodded and set the Pokemon back down. He'd come across this Shiinotic in the past and tried to reason with it. It had refused and laughed at his logic. It had started with draining Pokemon, including Epsilon's brother. "Sludge Bomb, one more time." Epsilon's attack changed and the move impacted again in an explosion of toxic sludge. The Shiinotic shuddered slightly, then fell still, it's glow vanishing completely and it's breathing ceased. Epsilon now picked up the body of a once dangerous Pokemon and headed back towards town. Tommy turned to Cici.
"This crew's been making people disappear for years, I guess it's even picked apart families one member at a time until there was only one left and they left town to escape both the Fairies and the painful memories. I guess that's why the bounties for dangerous Pokemon we saw back in Central City exist, to protect Pokemon and people alike from fates like that. Come on, let's head back to town." Tommy wasn't proud to have taken the life of a Pokemon, but he knew the risk of keeping it alive was far too high, especially with as powerful as it had been. All it took was one or two enthralled officers to cause all kinds of trouble for Feyhallow. And so he started walked. Of course, he knew they couldn't take too long, cause he still had Epsilon's Poison to nullify before it was too late.
