Name: Raye Solaire
Sex: Male
Age: 26
Phenotype: Faunus (Wolf)
Kingdom: Mistral/Atlas (dual citizenship)
Appearance: Tall, almost frightfully so, almost reaching six-and-a-half feet tall. His skin, already darker than normal, has darkened and bronzed further under the intensity of Vacuo’s constant sun. His hair is gray and black, shoulder length and shaggy, with a rough beard outlining his strong, square features. His eyes are cool blue, and he has a constant, wide, sharp-toothed grin on his face, his freakishly sharp fangs some of the only evidence of his non-human heritage. Broad-shouldered and well-built, he usually wears clothing that shows these features off, such as sleeveless shirts (should he bother wearing one at all). He usually dresses in black, gold and rust orange, particularly his signature black-and-gold trenchcoat, which he is almost never seen without, no matter the temperature.
Personality: “Exuberant” doesn’t even begin to describe this boundless fount of energy. Raye channels his fiery spirit into everything he does, whether it be fighting Grimm, pounding pints at the local tavern, or even cooking (Don’t eat his curry if you’re unprepared. Just don’t. It’s like eating pepper spray). He basically attacks life head-on, living it exactly how and when he wants to. Seldom seen without his trademark grin, Raye fancies himself an icon, a beacon for those downtrodden and suffering. A hero, even. He’s also prone to flirting shamelessly with anyone attractive in sight- male, female, Faunus, whomever. Despite all of this, however, Raye is no fool- those who talk with him are often surprised at the level of awareness and thoughtfulness that he displays, as well as his strategic prowess. When push comes to shove, spending time with Raye may be chaos, but only of the very best kind. Be warned, however- not every spark is a harbinger of glad tidings. A flame can just as easily be a raging crucible than a warm hearth, and all of that passion can just as easily turn from joy to rage.
Biography: Raye Solaire was born the child of Arthur and Nia Solaire, an Atlesian diplomat and Mistrali schoolteacher, respectively. The two met while Arthur was stationed in the Atlas’ embassy in Mistral, and returned to Arthur’s home kingdom shortly after Raye was born. To say that his peers were shocked at him bringing home a Faunus bride and son upon his return would be a gross understatement. While, legally, there could be no reprisals brought against the young politician just for whom he decided to share his life with, there was no doubt that the reception he received from then on was significantly frostier than before.
For Nia and Raye, the situation was significantly worse. Nia found it hard to find work in her favored field, forced to do menial jobs to get by, while Raye was bullied and ostracized by his fellow children for his Faunus heritage. While he was blessed with less-distinctive features than usual, eventually they always found out, whether by his mother coming to pick himself up from school, or even just a particularly sharp-eyed student noticing that his teeth were a little too sharp. Despite all of this, however, the Solaire family was not known for giving up, and endured through their hardships together. Raye was inspired by his parents, seeing that no adversity could silence his father’s laugh, or dim his mother’s smile. He resolved to live his life by their example, tearing in teeth first and cackling all the while.
His exuberance served him well, especially when he reached the age where he could enroll in a combat school. His physical prowess and dexterity, plus his intuitive grasp of tactics put him near the top of the class… despite some “incidents” with his peers, now that he was capable of fighting back. Regardless, at age 17, Raye managed to get accepted to Atlas Academy, to everyone’s shock, as such a thing was relatively uncommon for a Faunus to achieve. Then came the even greater shock, as Raye publically refused the invitation, deciding instead to attend an Academy, “more conducive to my continued education.” With that said, Raye left the icy terrain of Atlas for the desert sands of Vacuo, to attend Shade Academy. And it’s there he’s stayed ever since, even after graduating top of his class from Shade, becoming the Hunter he’s always dreamed of being…
...And flipping the double bird to those who doubted him with every move he makes.
Aura Color: Sunset orange
Semblance: Meteor- Raye’s Semblance cloaks him in a shroud of fiery energy, which not only grants him increased durability and strength, but can also be used to propel him at high speeds in any given direction, turning his entire body into a weapon. He can even use his propulsion powers to launch himself into the air, effectively granting him short bursts of flight. Such powers, as with all Aura-related abilities, can even be channeled through his weapon, greatly enhancing its offensive capabilities. The downside, however, is that he moves so fast when dashing in this state that it becomes hard to see his surroundings, much less control his trajectory. As such, his movements in his Meteor state are limited to short bursts of speed in straight lines.
Weapon:
(Ignore the gun- it's just the shield.)
Prominence (Melee, Ranged, Dust)- Raye’s pride and joy, Prominence is a combination of a tower shield and oversized crossbow, specially designed to use Raye’s Semblance to enhance itself, whether that be by heating up the weapon to increase its offensive ability, or by sheathing his crossbow bolts in fiery energy. Moreover, Prominence can be used to alter the properties of his Semblance, due to the carousel of Dust cartridges built into it. For instance, by using Lightning Dust, Raye can enhance his Meteor shroud with electricity, or use Ice Dust to turn his aura frigid instead of fiery, and so on. His abilities are limited only by his creativity… and also how much Dust he has on hand.
Favors: Meat (of all kinds, in vast quantities), fruit, fighting Grimm, working on his weapon, devising new strategies, cocktails
Disfavors: Vegetables (especially cooked ones), fast/ranged opponents, rain, when his weapon doesn’t work the way it should, hangovers
Affinities: Raye is a powerhouse when it comes to wielding his Semblance and weapon in conjunction. Through extensive practice, Raye is able to rapidly change direction in midair, even given his Semblance’s limitations, by quickly changing direction and launching himself in another direction. This makes his angle and trajectory of attack very difficult for his opponents to determine, allowing him to strike where the enemy’s defenses are at their weakest. It also makes him very hard to hit.
Faults: While formidable, Raye’s talents are primarily in short-ranged combat, having an aversion to ranged attacks, even with a crossbow built into his weapon. Moreover, while his weapon is a shield, his fighting style rarely takes advantage of that fact, being more suited to relentless offense. Finally, perhaps the most obvious of weaknesses in his fighting style is that, while Meteor is very fast and dangerous, its trajectories are still limited to straight lines. Anyone who can keep track of Raye’s speed and location can easily dodge his attacks until he wears himself out. Also, take care not to let him get angry- his normally razor focus and strategy go out the window, and he becomes much less caring of collateral damage, as well.
