Prologue

A thousand years ago, the world of Eunia stood at the peak of civilization; strides in technology and biomedical science far exceeded that of our world's, and though each nation present was ultimately looking out for its own future, the state of the world seemed fairly stable. That all ended, of course, once it was revealed that one nation had been building towards heavy militarization in secret. One thing led to another, of course, and the arms race that resulted could be nothing else if not a cold war. Needless to say, the paranoia that seemed to engulf the land eventually consumed the minds of those in power, and before long the Fourth Great War had broken out.

The results were devastating; many of the world's major cities had been destroyed in the fallout, and with a vast majority of the land rendered inhospitable for humans to live in or even tread into, the survivors of this chaos were forced to live in the ruins of these once-glorious cities and start once more.

Climbing out of that pit, of course, proved to be far more troublesome to the survivors of humanity in this land than expected, but one way or another, they managed to begin anew. Centuries of rebuilding and being unable to leave these ruins for fear of the now-unknown world left these people to develop in these little bubbles, working with what little they could parse from the ruins of technology to try and reach the glory of years past.

Centuries came and went, and the memories of the war remained all over the landscape. Air travel, however rudimentary, has once again been established, and the repair of communications between cities led to a re-establishment of global relations. But even so, the exploration of the unknown beyond the walls of these cities has not progressed much, if at all; rather, the focus on rebuilding infrastructure was of much more value to those in control. The danger that it posed combined with the lack of expendable human resources made it almost unthinkable—until now, of course.

Exploration outside city boundaries, barring the few smaller outposts and channels confirmed to be safe, had been deemed illegal until about two decades ago, when the populations of these small pockets of humanity had finally begun to spring back, more resilient than ever. Seeing that there was merit in exploring more than what was beyond their proverbial doorstep, the networked cities discussed (and came up with) the idea of a paritally government-run sector that would outfit people to explore these lands—now long since overrun by nature—in order to recover the technology that had been lost to time.

This organization, dubbed the 'Guild' by the people as a whole, set up operations a few years later, and thus began their forays into the land around each respective city. Though it remains far too early to note anything substantial beyond what is visible from the air, the landscape of the world has most definitely changed. What is to be found, of course, remains to be seen.

So... In essence, this is a sci-fi world that turned post-apocalyptic, but managed to somehow drag itself back to what we would consider the "modern" era (excuse the confusing tags, please). If there was a way to describe this RP, I think that "Made in Abyss meets Monster Hunter meets Etrian Odyssey meets Mystery Dungeon meets XCOM" is about an apt a description as any; that is, to say, that a lot of the RP will be exploration of the world beyond this "modern" land in search of relics of the past.

There are a few odd things about this RP, and those are detailed thus:
1. Weaponry/Clothing
As metal is still a precious resource within context of the world, weapons like standard guns are far too expensive for most people due to upkeep cost (bullets are VERY expensive). Of course, that doesn't mean that there aren't any alternative gun-like weapons (like XCOM's laser weapons, for example), but as of the start of this RP those haven't been recovered yet. There are some alternatives to start with, but for the most part the use of standard military armaments like those has been phased out.
Instead, a lot of weaponry has transitioned back to melee, with weapons like swords and such becoming the norm for these "explorers". Of course, these weapons are far more sci-fi in origin than their medieval counterparts; things like transforming weapons and augmented blades are among the top-of-the-line gear that has been found thus far. Of course, that's mostly beyond the price range of the average explorer, so many beginners opt to stick to generic stainless steel weaponry instead.
Due to a history of gene modification in Eunia as a whole (elaborated upon later), the usage of armor in combat isn't very practical at all. Clothing is very uniform, but only the very basics that are essentially supplied to people as needed. As the clothing itself is made from artificial materials, the possibility of buying (or even making) custom clothing for oneself has become a means of expressing individuality. It is, of course, somewhat pricy, but these clothes are incredibly durable despite their look and many people, explorers or not, often take pride in that. It is vain, in a way, but that's not to say that people don't find other ways to take pride in who they are. It's more a matter of personal versus cultural opinion, if anything.

2. The people
As mentioned earlier, Eunia has a history of genetic modification, which goes behind the usual augmentation seen in most sci-fi media. While there are many normal-looking humans walking around, there are also those with things like horns or animal features walking alongside them. Needless to say, there were people in the past who decided to change themselves to fit an ideal, and those modified genetic traits were passed down through the centuries to their descendants now. Catgirls and the like, for example, are surpisingly common as a result.
(And yes, it was become some 'genius' scientists decided to see if they could make someone into a catgirl in the first place. For science.)
People that those traits also express wider trends, of course; with the aforementioned catgirl example, the person in question may express higher-than average sensitivity to sound and agility higher than average. Of course, no modification is without downsides, but the field that exploded in the past as a result of that one experiment means that the possibilities are near-endless.
Of course, only so much can be expressed within the human body, so things like lizardmen and beastmen that are more animal than human are more oddities than anything else.
Aside from the wider-sweeping "racial" changes, the bodies of humans have been noted to be able to withstand 3 more generic, "under-the-hood" changes. Things such as increased strength (despite body build, even!), speed, or dexterity are also a possibility, but overlap of certain traits (such as a heavier build with speed) are more prone to only expressing one trait or the other.
This has led to a few crazies attempting eugenics on their kids, of course, but these are the outliers and are usually frowned upon by society.freakin' bluebloods
Things like PSI and magic do not exist within the setting, so don't even try.

3. Setting/The World
Eunia, as things are as of the start of this RP, has 16 major cities that have thus been restored, along with a few outposts in the area. While air and sea travel have been somewhat restored, their usage is mostly for trade than it is for leisure visits how to how dangerous and expensive it is to move between regions. The 16 all communicate via old systems that had miraculously escaped destruction in the past, but that is once more only really for official business.
The primary location for the RP will be a city called New Auren. The old city was built alongside a river, and the ruins thereof have been transformed into a cityscape over the centuries. For the most part, that's the only detail that really matters; more detail will be presented about the town (and the surrounding regions) as the RP progresses, but for the moment this is what is important.
As a result of being a formerly-globalized world, the diversity of origin of people all over these cities is about as varied as a jar of jellybeans. No limits barring the REALLY odd stuff, like... I don't know, blue skin.

4. The 'Guild'
Although it has a longer, more formal name, most people are apt to just calling the Guild 'the Guild'. It is a global organization that is built to record, buy, and sell the 'lost technology' that exists within the world, and is structurally similar to a flea market that got fused with a DMV; in other words, the Guild gives licenses to explorers (at a fee, of course) and an outlet to buy and sell whatever goods they might obtain in the field. These licenses act as a combined photo ID, debit card, and dog tag for said explorers, and having one is essential to be able to easily come and go from the cities on foot. There are anti-theft and anti-counterfeiting measures in place, of course, so stealing these things is a no-no. While there is a fee attached, said fee can be waived under certain circumstances, such as being mentored and acknowledges by another explorer of above-moderate prestige.
The government-run sector of the Guild mostly applies to the issue of ID, while the private sector is more concerned with transactions of money and items instead. Requests can be put in for certain things, but as it is mostly unknown what lies beyond in the ruins of the past, most of these requests aren't really ever touched save for the recovery of a lost explorer (or their remains) or something of similar importance.

I think that's it for the moment. Here's a form if you want to get started; feel free to ask questions if you want more information on anything in particular.

Name: Liam
Age: 22
Appearance:

His loose black clothing is bound tightly around his forearms and calves. It is somewhat heavier and warmer than what most would consider. He wears black leather gloves over his hands.

Personality: He is a bit of a self centered asshole. Sarcastic and rude. To be honest if someone sticks around long enough he can become very helpful towards them. It isn't really all that hard to earn a measure of respect from him.

Equipment: A matched pair of falcata styled swords with full D shaped guards and the back side sharpened along the last third of their lengths.

Abilities: Liam is of a reptilian lineage which outside of his transparent third eyelid leaves no outward indication. Under the surface his musculature is much more built towards speed and endurance. He has a reduced capacity for producing his own body heat but as a result has a lower metabolic rate.
In the undersides of his wrists he produces a potent neurotoxin that at sufficient doses leads to local numbness, dizziness, weakness and then death as breathing and blood flow stop. As with venomous reptiles he has a natural immunity to this toxin. This venom is secreted through his fingertips.

Skills: Liam possesses skills in sword fighting with one or two blades, especially against armed human opponents. He is adept at tracking and has an excellent memory for faces and locations.

History: Before the formation of the Guild Liams father was one of the border guardians, preventing excursions outside of the habitable zone as well as preventing anything dangerous from coming inside. Liam was trained from a young age, expecting to follow in his fathers footsteps. He had also expected to be able to exploit this position.
With the Guild he decided on a totally different path in life. Liam would be able to make a name for himself, becoming famous as a hunter and explorer. His current generosity and helpfulness are all fueled by a relentless drive to find new discoveries to attach his name to.

Other: Liam also enjoys gardening since it gives him an excuse to spend time out in the sun.

@TheFake: Accepted.

Anyways, here's mine for the record.

Name: Justin Tsao
Age: 20
Appearance: "It should be fine. I haven't missed yet."
Personality: Disciplined and steady, Justin is about as straightforward as he is careful. To say he is a man of few words, however, would be a lie. Rather than that, he is more apt to voice his opinions loud and clear, and often ends up debating with people over the best course of action. Even so, he seldom raises his voice or openly shows anger, though that may very well be just a mask to hide it with. He also has a tendency of being somewhat creative when it comes to combat situations, but those odd choices might not always lead to the ideal scenario.
Equipment: Aside from his clothing and glasses, Justin wields a mid-sized composite bow; said bow, similar in make to Manchurian bows, is made with modern materials instead. The bow itself is strung to be incredibly high-tension, thus requiring more strength from the user to fire it in the first place. As a result, though, the arrows he uses are also far larger (and more powerful) than other bows might fire.
The arrows themselves are made of material similar to that which makes up his bow, with metal arrowheads of varying make for differing purposes. Of course, he has to retrieve said arrows after using them if possible, but it remains a far more efficient weapon than a gun in terms of cost. He also carries some rope around, for various reasons.
Abilities: While no particularly strange traits have been passed onto him, Justin has abnormally high strength, pinpoint dexterity, and razor-sharp eyesight, all of which lead to his usage of the bow in the first place. Of course, this also makes him both surprisingly tough if caught at close range, as landing a clean blow in hand-to-hand combat is difficult, to say the least.
Skills: Though somewhat skilled in the usage of a bow, Justin is also surprisingly adept at martial arts. Though he may not have the speed required to pull off any particularly flashy moves, things like judo throws or other close combat maneuvers, when they land, are a lot more powerful. He has also learned to cook for himself in his spare time, seeing as how the rest of his family is too busy doing other things instead.
History: Justin is the second of three children to his parents, both of whom worked day and night to try and decode (and maybe recreate) the old technology of Eunia's past. As a result of their technical proficiency, their job paid well enough for the five of them to live without worry. His older sister was set to learn straight from them and succeed their legacy, while his younger brother was far more interested in medical science for him to acknowledge any other path in life. This certainty in their lives, even at a young age, gave Justin reason to hesitate. What path to take, which road to go down... Unlike his siblings, his future was as hazy as ever.
Having said that, though, the young man found that his parents didn't mind his study or practice of old martial arts of days gone by, nor did they fret too much when he took up the bow. After all, the texts involved had been deciphered by them, and it wasn't as if he was actively heading out to do anything stupid instead. There was an odd sense of pride in it for them, but Justin didn't see any of that. No, rather, this seemed to be a way out for him.
The guild had been formed while he was still young, but over the last decade of his youth the group's power had slowly grown to a point where Justin felt it a reasonable move to try and register as an explorer. Maybe here he could put himself to use, instead of ending up as the black sheep of the family that spent more time training than studying.
Other: In spite of his uncertainties and his lack of dedicated study, Justin is still rather well-versed in matters regarding STEM fields. It's definitely nothing that stands out, but there are odd things here and there that he might now (and if not, it isn't too hard for him to get to someone who might).
The glasses are, of course, for show.

@Mangrale: Hm...

Well, honestly, I don't mind that his traits are a result of having descended from that sort of lineage, but as of the RP, there should be no real... Uh... Modification of the body? So things like implants and sketchy pseudo-scifi procedures and whatnot are more of a no-go than, say... Using equipment. Remember, the world's kinda crawled back to the modern era, so they have some degree of modern technology for that. Not like something like mining wouldn't be dangerous anyways, but yeah. Surgery to implant something is also kinda weird since they'd need to recreate this piece of tech that is, in all likelihood, a bit too advanced for the era just because of a disjoint of how these items could be made then versus how they could be made now... And then considering how many there'd have to be of the item being installed vs the amount of people mining over the last 10+ generations or so... Yeah.

That's honestly about it. Everything else is fine, imho, so yeah. Fiddle with that and he's all green.

  • Name: Yuko
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: Dark brown hair, gold eyes, light skintone. She's pretty short too.
  • Personality: Yuko is an energetic girl who seems ready for anything at all times. Highly confident in herself, she has a sort of "accept any challenge" kind of attitude and and a highly optimistic outlook... on herself. Her faith in other people is rather low, and she has a tendency to laugh at others or even tease them if she thinks they did something silly or foolish. Indeed, Yuko will not hesitate to admonish and mock anyone she thinks is being stupid. Her generally positive outlook is tempered by, well, something of a temper. When she believes someone is being too foolish, her cheery taunting turns into anger and she will become quite irritable. That being said, Yuko also cares about those around her, especially children, and will do her best to ensure anyone working with her is not harmed. Even if she spends a lot of time teasing others, the truth is that she does care about them. Even if she doesn't exactly show it. At times, Yuko will use her mask to cover her reaction. Usually this is when she decides not to make it obvious she's laughing, but also when she's flustered or embarrassed about something to cover her blush. While she can fight hand to hand, she much prefers to use her katana.
  • Equipment: Yuko carries a number of different tools on her person. Chief of these is her main weapon, a katana designed to channel heat its blade. The heat is continually channeled through the edge of the sword once activated, heating the weapon to an extreme level. As a result, she is capable of cutting cleanly through many different kinds of targets when the blade is heated. However, the superheat function of the sword is not without its drawbacks. If overused, it can cause the weapon to overheat and force it into a cooldown state. If pushed even further, it can cause the sword to heat to the point where Yuko can no longer hold it. Aside from her weapon, Yuko carries a kitsune mask that possesses functions for both heat and night vision. Aside from basic food, she also carries a set of eight blasting powder vials, gunpowder-like substance that causes a small explosion once ignited. The vials are insulated to prevent this from occurring by accident.
  • Abilities: Yuko is very, very fast and dexterous, allowing her to pull off stunning maneuvers with her blade.
  • Skills: Yuko is skilled in two primary areas when it comes to combat. That is that she is very capable with a sword, enough to even deflect projectiles, and that she is surprisingly capable in hand to hand. However, due to her small size and relatively low amount of strength, her hand to hand combat is based around using momentum to deliver her blows or take targets off-balance.
  • History: Yuko was raised by her uncle, a hotblooded "man's man" who immediately decided to train his niece in hand to hand combat. Of course, since she was such a small girl, he decided to tailor the lessons to her size. This lead to her current style of unarmed combat. In spite of this training, Yuko was always more interested in fighting with a weapon, specifically a sword. Indeed, something that was left to her by her parents' was a katana, a sword that was built to heat itself up to extreme temperatures in order to enhance its cutting power. Eventually, once her uncle deemed her ready for it, Yuko claimed the weapon as her own and launched herself into lessons on how to use it, training for much of her life in order to wield it skillfully. Excited to use her abilities, Yuko managed to register for the guild and do some basic gathering missions not far from the city of New Auren.
  • Other: N/A

I feel like that backstory isn't enough but I was struggling from the start with it. ^^;

Took a shred of liberty with the past. Don't know if it's gucci or not.

Name: Dhalma

Age: 18

Appearance: Standing at 7'3", Dhalma is a giant compared to most others. Her skin is almost a ghastly pale, contrasting to her sharp brown eyes and black hair. Her figure is rather modest. Despite her massive frame, she's actually the runt of her family.

Personality: Polite and cold, Dhalma holds a visage of ruthless non-offense. She is incredibly worried about tainting her family's reputation, and as such, hides her true self. Her passion is the main force that drives her. Impulse is the force that controls her. She is incredibly joyful and loves speaking to others. Forcing her tongue to stop flapping once she has started to speak is incredibly difficult. Anger, however, is hushed. Always worried about hurting others, Dhalma couldn't ever think of hurting another person.

Equipment: Dhalma's equipment is rather utilitarian - a massive warhammer made out of bone and a small hammer made out of steel. She carries maintenance tools - a small anvil, waterstones, carving knives, everything that one needs to repair weapons - that allow her to repair the equipment of her allies. Her clothing is traditional and ancient - thick silks and clothes that had been tied by rope to allow for uninhibited movement.

Abilities: Dhalma has a unique physiology - her body has an improved system for the distribution of hormones and neurotransmitters. Along with this, she has an additional gland designed specifically to compliment the creation of hormones. At will, Dhalma can force herself into a fight state, causing her blood to circulate rapidly and spread. Her body, in response, unleashes a brutal cocktail of hormones and neurotransmitters, allowing herself to enter a "berserk" state. While in this state, she suffers from shakes, tunnel vision, and hearing loss. Her skin becomes flush and she is incapable of any advanced thought. Instead, she becomes a wild beast. Purely reacting on instinct, her reaction time and strength is increased.

This state, however, can't be held for long periods of time. It expends a large amount of energy, making overuse extremely difficult on the body. Staying in the state for any more than a few minutes causes a multitude of symptoms - sweating, sickness, difficulty breathing, headache, blurred vision, chest pain, confusion, and even seizures.

Besides her ability to enter a berserk mode, Dhalma is strong. Not fast, but strong. She can easily wield weapons meant for two normal hands in one hand.

Skills: Skilled in the art of smashing, Dhalma is untrained in almost everything except for maintenance. However, her lack of skill is a boon - learned fighters are often confused by Dhalma's moves.

History: The Horn Clan was always involved in the reclamation of Eunia. A highly traditional family, The Horn Clan had managed to retain ancient knowledge. Math. Literature. Metalworking. Bonecarving. As the centuries of survival began, the clan had always helped. Before the recreation of air travel, they were one of the only groups brave (or perhaps stupidity) enough to brave the unknown in hopes of finding others and reclaiming materials.

And as such, the clan is held in high regards. Even though their expeditions lead to nothing but their own death, their acts of providence over the embers of civilization had made the Horn Clan known to all. Even though their influence is constantly waning to the guild, most still respect the workmanship of their clan's steelworks and smithy.

For Dhalma, her birthright is nothing more than trouble. Ever since she was young, she was constantly taught to not disappoint her family. She would always have to be cold and aloof - the Horn Clan's princess. Despite only being a branch off of the main family, Dhalma was burdened with the weight of her family.

However, her dreams lied elsewhere. She didn't want to be burdened with the clan's politics. Everything in her mind was focused on one thing - the Guild. The earliest Dhalma could remember, the guild was there, braving the unknown to help the world. Of course the excitable and emblazoned Dhalma would want to explore! It was practically in her blood!

Much to her surprise, the clan allowed Dhalma to join the guild without much issue. Be it that they too understood that exploring the unknown was in their blood or the elders just wanting the ticking-time-reputation-bomb Dhalma to vanish, they trained Dhalma in maintenance, allowed her to carve her own hammer, and sent her to the guild to become an adventurer.

Name: Zeke

Age: 22

Appearance: Zeke is somewhat small and severely underweight. His dark hair is a wild mess and he often wears the same thing every day: a plain shirt, pants, gloves, and a deep blue cloak. Despite having the appearance of a homeless person, Zeke is immaculate and maintains his hygiene religiously. Otherwise, he is generally unnoticeable, and his narrow eyes are a forgettable bluish gray.

Personality: Zeke is friendly and polite. Since his voice is weak and raspy, he speaks softly and rarely, but is a superb listener and will gladly help you solve your problems. He can be charismatic when he tries, but don't let that fool you. Sadistic, cunning, a manipulative bastard and compulsive liar, he will just as soon give you advice as destroy your social life. To Zeke, people are not much more than tools whom he can use to further his own goals. He is very good at hiding this, however, and it's not often that someone is severely harmed by his endeavors. He values intellect above all else and has difficulty understanding and handling his own emotions. He expresses himself most through dark humor and his love of astronomy and interior design. He also likes to sew and doodle.

Equipment: Zeke's blue cloak is his most valued possession, reaching just below his knees. The inside is embroidered with a star chart, and in its pockets he always carries a tactical flashlight fitted with a bayonet and a small telescope, alongside other basic tools.

Abilities: Zeke, unfortunately, is disappointingly normal. He's as true a human as a human can be, with no enhanced qualities of any kind.

Skills: A scientist at heart, Zeke is observant and astute. He spends a lot of time thinking and is thus not a very good fighter, but knows how to use his cloak for self defense - waving it as a distraction or catching blades with it.

History: Zeke was raised in a nuclear family, with an older brother and younger sister. Though they were loving and provided him everything he needed to pursue a successful future, he disdained them and ran away at fourteen. He lived as a criminal, stealing and beguiling his way to adulthood, though always making sure to keep his hands quite clean. For example, he would rub off his fingerprints before committing an offense so as to minimize evidence left behind. Since the ridges grow back in about a month, he was able to maintain a clean record without suspicion, among other tactics. Now, he seeks to pursue lost knowledge and discover the mysteries of the past, even if it means involving himself with a government corporation.

Other: He's completely colorblind and always wears long sleeves and gloves, no matter the weather. Also is obsessed with the number 19.

@sntabe: Sorry for the delay. Let's see...
Hm... I'm more curious about the personality than anything. While the rest of the form seems fine otherwise, I'm slightly worried that your character might be more inclined to slyly start problems for the party that would really rear their heads in the long term... Which might derail from the main story if things really end up escalating (and as humans do, they usually escalate fast and hard).
So... Hm. Could I ask if you could either clarify the direction you'd take that or change it?

Edit: I know you said "it's not often that someone is severely harmed by his endeavors", but again, I'm more worried that something might happen in the middle that'd throw a wrench in stuff. Again, people are as people do.

Well, he doesn't just go around ruining people's lives for fun; that is to say, he would only do so if he had a lot to gain from it, such as if that person was standing between him and a promotion. He's much more likely to turn a couple people against each other, as he can always benefit from someone else's social misfortune, but really only if those two people were probably going to clash anyway. In sum, he's a catalyst.
