Say what you will about BvS, but I still have the nightmares about how bad Justice League was.

I'll take BvS and it's horribleness over a bland ass, forgettable Justice League. If you told me ten years ago I would see Murder on the Orient Express before a JL movie, and actually prefer it over that movie than I wouldn't have believed you.

I mean, you're not wrong, but to ignore its significance as a female-led superhero movie is to bury the lede a bit. Just as Black Panther is nothing terribly special among Marvel fare, yet it represents an important cultural milestone.

Besides, Wonder Woman's unapologetic appeal to true blue heroism, after the DCEU had spent the better part of three movies dragging their heroes through the muck for drama and deconstruction's sake, was a glass of cold water for a man trapped in the desert.

I mean, Black Panther was definitely better than Wonder Woman, but it, too, had its fair share of pacing issues. I enjoyed how they handled M'Baku, if I'm being honest. I appreciated the fresh take. Wasn't really a fan of how quickly Klaw was dispatched. But, much like WW, it was overhyped.

I understand these two films mean something different to demographics I'm not a part of, so obviously I can't speak on that aspect. However, as an average movie goer and huge comic fan, I was left somewhat disappointed after the movie. After all the rave reviews, the awesome trailers, the constant praise, and excitement, it was just... good. Nothing amazing. Not a stunning masterpiece. Not the epitome of comic films that all future attempts need to model themselves after. Not even in the top 5 of MCU movies, really. By MCU standards it was somewhere in the high middle. By DCEU standards it crushed them. By regular movie standards, it was kinda good. Definitely fun, if nothing else.

That being said, it's a movie I'll definitely be interested in watching again in the future. Can't say the same for Wonder Woman.

I don't think I ignored the significance of that at all. I just stated I don't think that alone merits all the praise and attempts by the public to elevate it as it received. People were claiming it was the best comic movie of all time. And not a small margin claimed this. That's just not the case by a longshot, regardless of if it starred and was directed by women. It's a good step forward in terms of the industry, yes, but that doesn't make it the epitome of comic adaptations. Nor the "best film of 2017" or any of the other unofficial accolades heaped on it.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I realize I'm kinda tired of superhero movies in general.

I've spent practically every goddamn day for the past two years on the defensive about liking BvS (five years, once you include MoS), and have made zero headway. Any time I say anything nice about it, I'm met with the same insipid memes, deliberate oversimplification, and name-calling. Really stains your ability to enjoy something when you open up a giant can of worms every time you mention it.

And I'm bored to death with the Marvel movies. Yeah, this is partly resentment since every time Marvel does well, it's taken as another excuse to drag everyone's proverbial balls across my face, but I've watched every one of their movies and have never had any desire to watch any of them a second time. I find most of the characters to be basically interchangeable, I think stylistically they're samey and uninteresting, and I think they lean way too heavily on "fun" (which is mostly just Whedonesque mumble-speaking and lampshade-hanging) in place of anything of substance. At this point I only watch them to keep up with the Joneses.

So really, my only two options are to keep being hounded for liking I'm not supposed to, or going along with the crowd and pretending to like something I don't. Neither of which really feels like a winning choice.

You're gonna need to write at least five sex scenes to get the taste of people legitimately liking a film with Jessie Eisenberg's Jim Carrey's Lex Luthor and a plot that makes about as much sense as eating frozen pizza straight from the box out of my mouth.

Opinions being what they are, I can't overstate the legitimate unbridled hatred that I have for that movie. I have an easier time swallowing the pill that is the previous Batman movie, which ended with him quitting for good after already having retired for 8 years because Christopher Nolan decided to go auteur with the franchise rather than stick with the arc that The Dark Knight both set up and paid off.

It's been a rough decade for me on the live action Batman front.

(Though I guess I should still count myself lucky compared to others, who either haven't had their favorite characters show up in a film yet or did, and it was Green Lantern, Catwoman, Suicide Squad or some shit.)

Wonder Woman, by the way, was and is dramatically overhyped as a movie. It was a decent film, but that's all. Better than all the other DCEU movies by far, of course, but that's not a very high bar to overcome. And as nice as it may be to have an empowering, female-led comic/action film, it wasn't strong enough on its own to merit half the praise it received, in my opinion. Ignoring the odd pacing and very rushed ending that was anything but climactic, it wasn't all that interesting or unique. Nor as fun as most MCU films.

I'd rank it as a mid-to-bottom tier MCU, if we're using that scale.
