The City world of Axon, one of the few places to have well over two hundred races all existing in relative harmony. Of course some people still held their prejudices and when you have over four trillion people spread over the surface of a medium sized world, somebody is bound to dislike somebody else. But as a whole, the planet was a haven for trade, advancement, and celebration. Today was just like any other and it was partly helped by the crew of the Argent Dawn getting some much deserved shore leave. Mostly the crew split up to go and enjoy their time in their own ways, but now the two weeks have come to an end and the call was sent to return to the ship for another voyage out into the dangerous void.

The first to return was a a semi-young reptilian man, Varus, the Captain of the Argent Dawn. Sporting his military uniform he wandered back, relaxed and ready for what the next few months or so would have in store.

The sun was still coming up and the lazy shadow from the ship cast some shade down on the Litharian man, his scales enjoying the cooler temperatures. That was one thing a Litharians had to deal with in City-Worlds, warmer temperatures. As dwellers of colder planets, it was sometimes uncomfortable to deal with the metropolises. Yet that wasn't bound to ruin his day. Instead he took his place in the center of the hanger's ramp, sitting down on the joint where the the ramp would fold up to seal the ship in space.

Since this world had so much travel and traffic coming through, the larger ships had to dock in massive landing fields and use the hanger or vehicle bays to get off ship. So if the crew was to come on board it was going to be past him. And just so, a few crewmembers got an early rise like him and pasted by, exchanging greetings and returning to their bunks, to join the ones who decided to just stay on board the ship.

Rennac smirked as he walked into the hanger with his order of transfer to the Argent Dawn in his front coat pocket and two large suitcases in his hands. Overall he was dressed like a common tourist, with a gawky hawaiian style shirt and cargo shorts with sunglasses and a sun hat. Two sandals adorned his feet as he walked around with a map in hand. To most of the people there they figured him as just some lost tourist who ended up in a military hanger. Several though knew the wolfen by reputation and rolled their eyes before chuckling at his antics. He soon made his way up to the captain and smiled. "Oh, hello there sir. Was wondering if I could get some directions. I'm looking for gate uhh, I think M-238: Direct flight to the outer rim colonies." Directly above them was a large sign signifying that he was already at the right place, wondering if he had even gotten a bemused smirk out of his new CO. Still, this was his first posting on a ship since his last string of ops before having to overhaul the security grid for the Alliance.

Once upon a time, Jackdaw might have liked cities. She loved the immensity of them, the buildings, the diversity, all of that was well and good. But then she hit the meat of it, the inhabitants, and she realized she had no place there. She couldn't bring herself to say it was their fault, though she wasn't about to take any blame herself, the truth of it was she and cities didn't mesh well any more. Nor did rural areas for that matter. She belonged on the ship, plain and simple. R&R was good to her for a couple days, and then she got antsy, fidgety. She needed direction, a goal, and aboard the Dawn, she had that.

When she arrived at the hangar, she didn't dawdle. She had a bag of food to add to her stash, a few dice from a casino, and a nice new baton for the next time she went on leave. She could see the Dawn, but stopped when she caught sight of Rennac. Oh boy, who was this supposed to be? She could feel her patience beginning to wane away already.

She walked past, not acknowledging the wolfen man, and giving a slight nod to Varus as she made her way inside to set her stuff away. Her quarters were close, and she was back within a few moments, more to observe than anything. Even if she wasn't fond of the man, he offered a distraction, which she was more than eager for, given that they wouldn't be heading out for a bit.

The girl wasn't lost--quite the opposite, in fact. Not lost at all, knew exactly where she was going, always. Kind of her thing. She was thin, lanky, and tall--dressed easily, casually, cargo pants and a loose t-shirt, sunglasses over her eyes as well as a few strands of hair, and a backpack slung easily over one shoulder. Her tail swung lazily behind her, curling in the air, close enough to not cause too much of a scene, but far enough away to be an annoyance. She stepped up to the door with the kind of cocky arrogance one only acquires by really not deserving it at all and tossed Varus a wave that seemed like it was pretending to try very hard to be professional, and then stepped past him. Wolf-boy in the shorts wasn't worth much, at least not to her eyes, but she paused a moment at the girl. She reached up one handedly, tugged the shades down, and a grin crossed her features. Her eyes swung the form quickly, and she lifted one hand, gesturing at the nodes. "'Eeeyy Jackdaw, didn't see you much on break. Figure maybe back on the ship I can getcha to reconsider lettin' me give those a once-over." Even with the "excuse," her voice could hardly be mistaken for actual professionalism--and her wink even less so.

Varus let out a mid morning yawn when the Wolfen wandered up, sneaking up on his vision, but not his ears. So when he finished his yawn and looked down, the sight was... The only words to describe it could be shock and awe.

"You've gott'a be shitting me" He whispered under his breath, standing up just after finishing.

"I heard we were getting somebody new", He gave a shrug. "I can't flaw your ability to make a first impression" He finished with a light smirk.

When Jackdaw passed, he returned the wave briefly, before looking back at the Wolfen.

"Your dossier told me of your antics and while I appreciate a good joke, please save it for once we are on the ship. We are suppose to be professionals after all." He said standing up to his full height. Dusting off his uniform and straightening it to look and proper and official as possible.

By now Dresden made her pass by and once again he returned his wave briefly, a little light bulb growing in his head. "Now while I frown upon antics like this, I think I know somebody who would love them... See that thin girl who looks like a human who just walked by? She absolutely loves jokes and pranks." He finished with a wink. "But first, you should probably get into your bunk. Head inside and take a right down the second door, then take the elevator up to the second floor, take an immediate left and the bunks are there, head to the back of the right wing, you'll see a uniform to signify your bunk."

He made a sit back down and looked back out for the last crewmember, only looking back to the Wolfen to offer a tid-bit of advice. "Oh and if you dress like that in a formal military ordinance again, I will have to reem you publicly." But with that said, he gave a friendly smile and another wink, letting the Wolfen pass to get situated.

Rennac smirked and tossed the sunglasses and hat onto one of the bags with a smirk. "Well, had to see how you'd react to something unexpected. It's a good mark of a leader to take surprises in stride. You'll find there's little I do that does not have a valid reason." He turned to Dresden with a smirk and nodded, figuring he's need to see her later. Jackdaw on the other hand caught his eye simply because of the various ports on her body. Needless to say he thought about tinkering with her body a bit to see what modifications he could make. When he was given directions he raised his wrist and smirked, a map of the ship on the display. "Oh dont worry, already looked at the schematics and constructed a map on my bracer. I never go out on assignment without doing my due research. To be honest, this baby's got one of the most advanced computers in the Alliance. That alone got my full attention. Anyway, I'll be sure to dress nice for the formal occasions. Otherwise I'll be wearing what gets the job done quickly, efficiently, and correctly."

He moved into the ship and dropped off his bags at his bunk, tossing the tourist getup in favor for his actual clothing. He donned a pair of long black cargo pants and utility boots, a vest with multiple pockets and panels lining it with his hacking goodies. On each wrist was a dual processing wrist computer which he kept on him for hacking jobs and fingerless gloves to give him a good grip without sacrificing his dexterity. Of course, he had to put on his uniform over his attire, the stuffy jacket seeming redundant and useless for the most part. He soon came out with is official regalia on, moving toward the two girls. "Ah, pleasure to meet you two. Dresden and Jackdaw if I'm not mistaken." He offered a hand to shake to the two of them, figuring Jackdaw would refuse on the fly with Dresden shaking it.

Jackdaw gave a roll of the eyes to Dresden, though devoid of the venom that would usually accompany such a gesture. Dresden was well aware that she desired no such relationship with her or anyone for that matter, but the other girl still joked, perhaps out of spite. Whatever the case, Dresden wasn't someone she had to worry about overshadowing her, the girl was usually as antisocial as they came, so Jackdaw put up with it, even took part herself every now and then. Couldn't always relieve stress on missions.

When Rennac vanished inside the ship, she cast an exhausted look down at Varus. "Are you serious with this guy?" she asked, though she didn't expect an answer really. The captain's choices were his own, and it wasn't her place to question them. Especially not if she ever wanted to rise up.in the ranks.

Eventually the wolfen man made his way back outside, and this time he looked a bit more presentable, though that doofy air still hung about him, stinging her nose. He offered out a hand, and as much as she might have wanted to ignore him, she figured they'd be working together as long as it took for him to get himself killed. So she played the good girl, shook his hand, nodded to him.

"You aren't. Do you have a name yourself, or will "fresh meat" suffice?" she asked.

Well, she shook his hand at least.

Varus took a turn to face the approaching Jackdaw, not standing, but swiveling on his rump, when the question was posed, he gave a shrug.

"Don't look at me like that. It's not like I have a say in it. Command sends me Greens and I have to put up with them. You were no exception either. This Wolfen is strange to be sure, but his dossier is impressive; if a little disheartening."

He made a gesture to skirt it off, "He may be insufferable, but command thinks we may need him."

A few moments later Rennac showed back up and Varus tossed a light wave.

Dresden grinned still, a cocky, assured thing, and leaned back against a wall, dropping the sack to her feet. She parted her mouth after a moment, as though to offer a comment, but Rennac returned soon enough.

She didn't take the hand--let Jackdaw have it, and if he kept it up after, that was his own thing.

She pulled a cord out of her pocket, popping a bud into one ear. Let everybody else handle the newbie--not her department.

She didn't need to worry much, though--quick enough, big fluff of fur with a canine skull-face and glowing eyes bounded into the way, dropped onto all fours before smoothly bouncing onto his hind legs as he reached the group. "Heeeeyyyy guys," he greeted chipperly, eyes bright, grin like he was laughing at your own expense. Not really his fault though, skulls just look like that. One paw waved up, claws flashing in a greeting. "How'd everybody's shore leave go? Didn't see much a'ya. Well, most a'ya."

Cities like this didn't mix well with this particular Varyx, and she was certain that she could vouch for that being the case for almost every other Varyx out there. There are reasons as to why the Varyx are very seldom seen outside of their solar system, and she wasn't the kind of person who enjoyed being in the midst of all the chaos and hubbub of the large cities anyway. This was no exception. Taerys was sure that 95% of the population on this planet had never seen a Varyx before; they were one of the very newest races to join the galactic community. She didn't want to attract any curious, watchful eyes. Instead, she had stayed firmly put on the ship. At least then she knew her surroundings.

It wasn't long before Taerys heard a commotion from the Argent Dawn's airlock. People must have been returning the ship after the couple of weeks R&R they had. She'd also heard that they were bringing on someone new, but Varus hadn't given anyone a lot of specifics regarding that. Maybe Varus was introducing him to the ship. Either way, the Varyx figured it was best to just go and check it out.

Donning a tank top and some combat shorts, Taerys made her way over to the airlock, finding a good mix of different people conversing, one of whom she'd never seen before. She didn't make any move to introduce herself to the little group. Not yet, anyway. She went straight to Varus instead. "Captain." Taerys stated, nodding at him. "Can you tell me anything about the new guy?"

Rennac's gaze visibly sharpened at Jackdaw's response, a sly smirk coming to his face. "Rennac will be fine. I'll be taking up the position of technician here. Hmm, multiple body ports, typical of cybernetic enhancement. Above average build for agility and precision in mind. Truly the consummate soldier." Of course he figured something was likely given up for all those implants and augmentations, but knew not to delve into it. There was some information he chose never to crack into until the person in question would open up about it, or he believed it was an urgent matter. "I can understand your... doubt in my abilities. Perhaps seeing my dossier will help? I have a digital copy on my wrist computer. If not I can always do a... demonstration." He figured Dresden wasn't interested in talking at the moment, particularly since she was working to tune them out. Apparently the captain wanted to pull one over on him for the prank earlier. He then noticed the other two. Of course, Taerys could of just asked him any questions but pushed the thought away as he stepped toward Teeth. "Ah, hello there. Rennac Faintheart, ace technician for ground team. From your description I'm assuming you're our medic?"

In a moment, the predatory glare in her eyes vanished, replaced by a half-lidded disappointment. "Oh, you're a techie. Not my problem. Thanks but you can hold on to your dossier, I don't have doubts about your abilities, I just have no expectations yet at all. The things you used to do only matter until you get on here," she said,

She turned herself at the mention of her nodes, the bored gaze snapping back to attention. "And listen, I'm property of the Alliance, and the Argent Dawn, only person with permission to tinker with me is Varus."

Jackdaw had needed to be very adamant about that with a few of the technicians before, and this guy was setting off every trouble-alarm in her head. Then again, if push came to shove and she needed to assert herself on the situation, she'd at least get to let off some steam. Truth be told she couldn't stand hacker-types, always arrogant as far as she'd encountered, and even if she could level with them on pride, theirs stemmed from anonymity.

When Teeth approached, she lost her tense edge. When she'd first met him she had never seen one of his kind in person, and it through her for a loop. What was even more surprising was that the skeletal dog had the ferocity of a dust bunny. Without a doubt the most amiable person on the ship, nowhere near a problem for her. Plus, he had a habit of playing music in his office, and that always served to raise her spirits when she'd walk by. She offered a smile and a slight nod in greeting.

Dresden bit her lip, brows cocking up. "Someday I'll talk y'outta that, Jack." Half flirtatious, half natural curiosity--antisocial and undriven wasn't the same as not-liking-her-job, after all, and the tech in that girl was something else.

Teeth put a hand out for Ren as he approached, stuck-smile unchanging. "Head Medic--Teeth. Called Teeth, I mean, my name. Watch the claws, got a habit of nicking." He moved his fingers slightly--short things, like paws, the dexterity coming from the long nails they held. It was a bit strange to watch him work--like constantly using chopsticks. Perhaps awkward on another person, but he lived that way a lifetime, and being careful with them was something he was used to.

Varus swiveled once again to face Taerys, "A few things sure, he is exceptional at technological infiltration and prone to..." He cleared his throat and raised his hands to make air quotes. "...Prone to childish and inappropriate behavior. If the dossier is to be believed. And given our first introduction, I'd say it is."

When Jack made the reference to being the only one to tinker with her, he couldn't help but turn and throw yet another slight wave to signal that he was still there and vaguely listening for mentions of his name.

Then when Teeth came up, he held his ground and gave a friendly wave, one a bit more energetic than usual. Teeth's liveliness had a way of being contagious and it showed even in him. "Hey Teeth, glad you made it back alive."

Rennac smirked. "Dont be too disappointed. I was the hacker used for the major black ops in this sector. We could have a few sparring sessions too. I'd like to keep a good grip on my CQC when I'm not fiddling with circuit boards. It's actually a bit disappointing so few technicians bother to learn basic combat." He then looked to Teeth and shook the long nailed hand, careful of the sharp claw like nails. Thankfully, most they did was scratch the casing of his wrist computer. "Pleasure Teeth. Glad to see someone here showcasing that you cant judge a book by it's cover. Fortunately I'll be seeing you more than the other techies. Will be the keymaster for our infiltration and ground teams." He then turned to Dresden, figuring he had a good way to draw her in a bit. "Say, you're the engineer right? You wouldn't happen to know the plasma transfer rate for this ship would you? Wanna know I'll have plenty of spare juice to upgrade the security systems."

Jackdaw was content to let Dresden deal with Rennac. She was a bit dismayed to hear the wolfen would be joining on the ground team, but then again she was fairly sure the guy was going to get himself killed. Not that she was going to try and usher in that possibility, she wasn't a monster, she just had a low tolerance for his type.

She strolled back over near Varus, hoping to hurry out the remaining time. She nudged his side with her foot, looking out to the hangar. "Glad to see you didn't lose the ship while we were away," she said. "And you're in one piece, look who's all responsible."

Perhaps she and the captain weren't "best friends", but out of the whole crew, he was perhaps the easiest to be around next to Teeth. He fit the role well, struck her as the "leader" type. At the very least, he was respectable, and that was the most important thing.

Taerys sighed at Varus' response, shaking her head slightly. "Well, just as long as he's no liability to anyone in the field." She stated, watching the new guy closely. The Varyx was easy to anger - she'd be the first to recognise that fact about herself - and she just hoped he knew when to curb his own behaviour. Sure, a little joke or two to lighten the mood was fine, but Taerys felt that this new recruit could push her to the very edge of her tolerances if he wasn't careful.

The young Varyx carefully eyed Jackdaw as she made her way over to her and the captain, but said nothing. She could feel some sort of rage boiling up inside her as Jackdaw neared, and she knew exactly why that was: she was a human. Thankfully, Taerys had learnt to control her instinctual urges. Mostly. A low growl was unwittingly let out of her throat as Jackdaw got next to the two of them. Perhaps she still needed a bit of work on that. She knew that her race was seen as still rather feral, often going off of instincts and primal thoughts rather than anything else, but Taerys couldn't care less what people thought of her.

"Don't worry Taerys, I'm in the same ship as you. But if Command felt the need to send him to this ship, he has to be worth something right?" He finished with smile and gesture to the crew. The band was strange to be sure, but they had become like a family, a very dysfunctional family, but a family none the less.

When Jack made her approach and comment, he smiled and looked out the same way as her for a moment trying to see what she had her eyes fixed on.

"I would never lose my baby." He pat the floor of the hangar gently. Then continued in a gentle tone. "As for myself, you got lucky. Knowing my antics you shouldn't be surprised if I come back one day short an arm. What would you two do then? Would you be able to manage without me?" He finished with a smile, and glanced at both Taerys and Jack.

They may fight like bickering children on occasion, but he liked them both greatly, Hell maybe even borderline love.

Jackdaw regarded the Varyx for a moment, craning her head just enough to meet Taerys's eyes with her own. Perhaps before her operation she might have concerned herself more about the standing feud between their races, but as it stood, the Varaxian's girl's spite was nothing more to her than an assertion of power. To her, while they were on the team, race was worth what it would buy you on the battlefield, and not a penny more. Maybe that's why she'd undergone the surgery? Humans were, in comparison to many races, quite weak.

"I don't think things would change too drastically, Varus. If you kicked it, I'd gladly lead in your memory," Jackdaw said, turning her head fully to Taerys, There was challenge in her eyes, but it was contained, as if she wasn't directly addressing her. "Just as I'm sure Taerys would gladly follow."

Human, Varyx, Litharian, it didn't matter to her. She wasn't on the Argent Dawn to spark racial feuds just as much as she wasn't on it to resolve them. She had one goal; the top, and if Taerys presented any kind of obstacle, for any reason, Jackdaw was not going to back down from it.

Height was not exactly an area that she excelled in, the young Varyx reflected as she stood her ground firmly in the face of the human, her head tilted up with her own eyes locked with the other pair. If she was afraid of being smaller than anyone, though, then she wouldn't have gotten very far in life that's for sure, and the day that she was afraid of human would be the day that, well...Taerys didn't think there was ever a day that'd happen.

"I wouldn't be so sure about that..." The Varyx trailed off, her voice carrying a certain but subtle threat to it. She bared her teeth a little. "But..." Taerys began, "...we're on this ship for the same reason. Maybe it'd be best that we kept it that way, hm?" She pulled her gaze away from Jackdaw's and then started walking away again, not letting her answer. After a few strides, she glanced back over at Varus and smiled a little before turning away and rounding a corner.
