I get a kick out of creating a really in depth character and making him the psuedo-leader of whatever assemble group a roleplay comes up with... then killing him.

@Jig, dices are random (obviously). While it might be great development for your character to experience defeat, it might also be great for them to be on a long winning streak and become overconfident because of it (and then end up making mistakes that aren't salvaged by dice rolls). The dice gives you less control, but not less development or story.

Sure, winning is also decent character development if that's the way you want to take it*. I'd simply rather choose.

*typically, I like to hit my characters repeatedly with a stick, but I'm sure I'll throw one a bone one day.

I prefer dice for the reason that it takes away the choice from me and forces me to act dynamically, like, say, in real life. Instead of my character always getting things their way, they could legitimately get maimed or die. So long as it makes sense in-context, like a veteran warrior should never lose to some random peasant in a normal, straight up duel.

New B!tching:

Meta-gaming. When your character has a secret, even one that could be easily found out by the proper methods, that other players are aware of, and suddenly one character has this bolt of inspiration that enables them to instantly work out what the secret is despite having absolutely no information about it and not having embarked on any means of research to find it out.

In this particular case, I'd actually specifically, in the IC, indicated exactly how anybody that wanted their character to find out could have them do it.

But, no, telepathy's faster.

Grr.

Fair enough. I get that people like the randomness - I just really don't.
I especially don't fancy the idea of accidentally getting my character killed if I'm enjoying an RP. Boooooo. >:[

Oh boy, this just brought back bad memories of a player I once had the incredible displeasure to be part of a game with; I had one character who I rolled as an information-broker, went through the other players to ensure that they would be okay with this – they were fine with it, but this one chap, he took meta-gaming to a whole new level. Whatever I did to try and role-play this sneaky little career, somehow his character would be there to foil the whole thing. Eventually I had to go the Gms due to it as his character eventually began to claim he knew who my character was without any evidence!

I could understand that, after a few in-game months and habits that gave my character away, I could understand someone being a tad suspicious, but this guy was there in the pantheon of meta-gaming gods.

But yeah, it irks me bad!

These people suck. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's just a determination to helpfully pick up on every point in everybody's post.

I once was playing an underconfident-and-cowardly-but-not-incompetent character who was deliberately concealing his skills out of reluctance and spite, which I said, in my narrative voice in the IC. One character, an infuriatingly imperious and kool (with a kapital kay) snarker immediately turned to him in the following post asking him if he was hiding anything.

When challenged: "Oh, she's a very complex character. I'm sorry you don't understand her."

My first roleplay ever was on a gaming forum that had its own section for Play-by-post, and I picked up some of those awful habits out of frustrated necessity. That had to be nearly eight years ago come this fall, maybe seven, and I'm ashamed of those times. Habits are hard broken, but to be honest, the RPs directly following it were the best influence I could have asked for and some of the nicest people.

I was early teens, I think, if not preteens, and the GM of this thread (an Eragon-inspired one) was not a good one. I watched as people in the game began to flake off and outright leave in a rage. It wasn't until it was only the GM, one other person, and me that I saw the issue. This GM would outright meta-game and god forbade her character have any faults. It was infuriating by the end because I brought the problem to her, we dueled in character, and she did nothing but dodge dodge block auto-hit dodge hit kill >_> essentially, at least. Commas were left out because it was really no more than a flurry of "MY CHARACTER CANNOT BE BEATEN RAAA" from her. It was incredulous. Not a good way to start my RP'ing experience, I admit, but it's always wonderful to look back and see how far you've come. ^_^

I started in tabletops. Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition with a few expansions. I honestly don't remember too much about it. We sat around a table, partook of our inspiration, and played. Vampire: The Masquerade and Savage Worlds (my favorite) followed. Been nearly a decade, and Savage Worlds was actually fairly recent so my opinion might be a bit biased.

That's a cool way to kick off roleplaying. I'm not well-versed in tabletop because almost all of my RP friends were online-only for a very long time and any time we tried to do something, it just kinda of died... Tragic, I suppose. I did one RP that was semi-tabletopy, but it was play-by-post with those tabletop elements throne in (you know, dice rolls and traits/feats and things like that). But a few friends and I are planning to get together for DnD 3.5 (I had a character drafted for 4 before that group kinda of dissipated /: ) so I'm pretty excited about that.

On-topic: I hate when a roleplay literally just seems to vanish off the face of the Earth and all the players stop posting all at the same time. >_>

When players obviously don't even look at other sheets before submitting their own character, resulting in awkwardly similar character roles within an RP (without complimenting or contrasting) or outright contradicting others. Grr.

Oh, god, Jig. I mean, before making a CS, I won't mind if somebody just skims, but to outright *ignore* all other sheets is entirely disrespectful. Unless the thread is accepting x number of people and nobody is accepted until all sheets are posted and read by the GM. If that made any sense... derp. Anyway, I agree, Jig, I hate when I see a blatantly recurring role for a thread...

I honestly wonder if people read them and it simply doesn't occur to them that it might be worth making their character with the intention of complimenting or contrasting the other characters in a roster. It's not as though every character has to fill a unique niche, but if two characters have similar specialities, let's say, then those characters should surely be designed to contrast one another, or you end up with a completely random and unconnected characters?

When people try to put in things that were not in canon when clearly everyone else was told that it should be kept within canon of the game.

When people don't read the whole Interest check and then join find out what the rp is really about then bail

When people GM then leave for a week or more at a time leaving a confused group of people sitting on their asses without a clue on what's going on.

When people just up and leave a roleplay without a single word.

Agreed, Jig. I think that often happens too. Ugh, it's a pain!

Lol, I remember my first RP.

It was a nominally Final Fantasy-based world to be 'true to canon'. For some reason, Final Fantasies VII-X were represented by four Kingdoms, even though IX is the only one with any concept of Kingdoms whatsoever. The protagonist from each game was the King of each Kingdom, just, uh, like the originals. Sorta.

One was playing Cloud, like no version of Cloud ever seen.
I was a Water Mage thing with a limitless supply of instant get-out-of-jail-frees to pull out of his ass, featuring the amazing "Haha, if I'm not actively attacking you, you cannot hit me for some reason" spell and access to a crystal that was both for some reason the incarnation of Dead!Aerith and responsible for all the water in the FFVII Kingdom.
The third character was, I fuck thee not, "in control of all time and space".

I hope I've come a long way since then. In fairness, we had a whale of a time and we were all as crappy as each other so none of us kinda went "Yeah, this is the single biggest pile of crap I've ever been involved in."

I've come a long way but I'm still not uber awesome like half the guys on advanced are in terms of quality of posts and size. That being said I'm one of the few guys on here with one roleplay completed and one aborted but completed (Everyone was getting tired so I beamed the final boss to the area we were fighting in and had one of the canon protagonists of gundam OO wreck him hard.)
