Drifting in the water, feeling the subtle currents propel him along in the cycling churn of warm and cold water. His eyes were closed, still stuck in the moment. He was trying to piece together what had happened moments ago…it was a blur before the blackness. There was a second, just before he opened his eyes. The Squid was trying to protect him…he felt it, through the Red. Putting those clues together, it must have been combatting his teammates…
They couldn’t have known, Ja couldn’t tell them. The squid was scared, yet still trying to help him. He had gotten a glimpse of the underwater ship…must have misunderstood the vehicle to be a whale. Its fight or flight response decided to fight, as the predator had gotten too close for him to flee in time…
Ja racked his brain, trying to figure out what was doing in that time. He could assume that the suit somehow prevented his gills from forming. He was suffocating so the squid was compelled to keep him alive. His Amai said that his connection to animals was strong, perhaps even stronger than hers…It led to his friends fighting over him; lost to misunderstanding each other…It was his fault…If only Ja could wake up just a few seconds earlier. Maybe he could have stopped the fighting. Maybe he could have calmed the young squid down. Maybe…
The whiskers in his mane caught a shift in the water’s pattern of flow. Something was approaching…but it wasn’t a fish. Opening his eyes, he caught the figure of Nymph approaching from below in his peripheral. Two orbs of an amber glow peeked out at her between the mesh of his hair around his face. His eyes locked with the body of the squid as it started to reach towards the brightness above. Though, that’s when Daphne pulled closer, obscuring his view of the dead.
It was in the brief second with the hand on his shoulder, that he looked up to her face. His eyes tingled with some pain at the warmth hers carried, his pupils shook. His lip quivered with an apologetic smile to his friend of the green, leaning his head onto her hand. Looking down again, back toward the submarine, he took notice of Kassy exiting the top hatch…
He supposed there was some explaining to do...Though, how would he explain to his mission leader that he doesn't remember how he got here?
