Cade returned to the clearing where he had left Ayita, the large hare slung over his shoulder. He placed the hare underneath the tree and slung the halberd back across his back. He found Ayita in a tree with a pile of fruit beneath her, it seemed both of them had successfully managed to find food. He guessed that humans were similar to the elves and fairy’s, as they did not seem to have any animal like features like his own kinds, and preferred their meat to be cooked. While Cade would readily admit it did taste better when roasted over a fire, in a pinch he could also eat his meat raw.

“Excellent! We have breakfast.” He said looking up into the tree where Ayita was perched. Since this was the second time he’d come across he in a tree he assumed she was adapt at climbing, this was good as he could possible go to the elf village to get supplies and a weapon and trust that in the trees she’d be safe from those who would turn her into the lich. “We can build a small fire to cook the hare and regain our strength for the day. Afterwards, if you’re alright with it, I could go to get you a weapon and some supplies from the village. I think you would be safe if you stick to the trees, and I like our chances better if we are both well-armed.” Cade offered as he began to gather wood and tinder for a fire. While Cade could in theory build a fire he was by no means good at it, he tended to keep in the south where, with his fur and a halfway decent shelter, there was little need for him to build fires to keep warm and when alone he usually ate raw meat for the simplicity of it. He often struggled to get a spark with a simple fire plough.

Bowyn walked deep into the forest, while Boreas flew off to find something to eat, heading towards the spot where he made his camp. He made his way to a clearing where a small waterfall poured from a rocky cliff into a stream. Near the steam was his camp which consisted of an A-frame shelter, a collection of rocks forming a fire pit with a collection of firewood nearby, and his few meager possessions. First, he built a fire and collected some water from the stream to boil inside of a pot. As he waited for the water to boil he retrieved a small cup from inside the shelter, the floor of which was covered with leaves, moss, and animal furs. He rinsed out the cup out in the stream. He broke the skaula up into the cup and once the water had boiled, he poured some of it into the cup with the skaula. Once the tea had cooled off some Bowyn sipped on the mixture, which tasted like bitter dirt, and he was beginning to feel the psychedelic effects of the tea before he had finished the cup.

Bowyn felt his entire body relax, his limbs felt light but weaker as well, his heart pounded in his chest and he felt unusually warm for a winter fairy. A light smile formed on his face as he felt a semblance on peace, for Bowyn the only time he could truly relax enough to let go of his pain was with hallucinogenics. He found a sense of serenity as he stared off into the trees and watched as they began drifting. The world looked brighter and more beautiful, there was a glimmer of hope in the soft pink rays on the sun, and the warmth he felt was as if nature herself was telling him things would be alright. He used his now clumsy limbs to pull himself up from where he sat and headed towards the bank of the stream. Bowyn knelt near the cold water and began using it to form snow, which he molded with his hands into the shape of a bust. Once he got the shape right, he began turning the snow into ice, the shape shrunk as it froze and once it was solid ice, he began to shape it further. The ice changed and molded to the will transferred from his fingertips. Any tools he needed where formed from ice, his expanded mind creating them and allowing them to melt as needed.

By the time Bowyn reached his peak he felt satisfied with the sculpture he created. It certainly wasn’t perfect, and they never would be. As he watched the icey face begin to slowly melt without his constant touch and magic, he could, in this headspace, accept that this way of remembering that which he had lost was enough. A cry of Boreas broke him from the trace he fell into as he watched the ice melting, and his avian companion returned from his hunt. He watched with enormous pupils the tracers he saw as Boreas flew around him before landed nearby on a rock. Bowyn stumbled back onto his feet and used the remaining water from the pot to put out the slowly dying fire.

“You’re a pretty bird.” Bowyn said slowly, grinning at Boreas.

“I truly am, a shame you can’t appreciate it sober.” Boreas replied before taking flight and landing comfortably on Bowyn’s shoulder. “We should go for a walk.” Boreas knew that if the fairy spent too much time watching his ice melt he would grow sad again and he had no desire to have to pull his friend back from a bad trip.

“Yeah!” Bowyn said excited to explore the forest once again. They headed off deeper into the forest, with Bowyn’s cloudy mind unable to remember all the twists and turns he was taking as he followed his whims on their walk. Boreas remained alert, looking for anything that could threaten his friend in his altered state and keeping his keen sense of direction to eventually lead the way back to the camp. The merlin did not mind his babysitting duties and was satisfied to see his friend happy and at peace for a time. Deeper into the forest Bowyn felt the merlin’s energy change, alerting him that something was off. “What is it?” He asked only half paying attention as he watched the wood of the trees around them as it moved, almost as if the forest was breathing.

“Someone else is near. Listen.” Boreas said. Bowyn tried to listen but the other sounds of the forest consumed his attention and despite Boreas’s instance that it could be danger, Bowyn continued. “There.” Boreas said turning his head in the direction of a figure that moved through the forest.

“Is that an elf?” Bowyn wondered out loud. He didn’t care for elves always thinking they were above everyone with their fancy machines. “Should we greet them?” He asked the merlin.

“I don’t know.” Boreas mused, although normally he would encourage Bowyn to interact more this creature seemed off. “She is armed.” The bird warned.

Bowyn, in his drug induced curiosity, ignored the warning and approached the strange woman. He suddenly decided he wanted to know what made her seem so strange to the merlin and he found himself drawn to the drifting patterns he was seeming in her hair. As he got closer he noticed what was so strange, her ears were rounded. He’d never seen an elf with such strange ears before and the sight of it, mixed with the euphoria from the skaula, made him laugh. “Hey your ears are round!” He said, choosing these words as he greeting.

Bowyn wandered through the streets in the marketplace of Doromos. Atop his left shoulder an alert Boreas, a merlin, was perched. He stuck to the crowded areas, although there were few people whose presence he cared to be in, it provided better cover for him as he worked. As he stopped to look at various jewelry his nimble fingers slipped several items into his pockets. Boreas, a loyal companion, would ruffle his feathers when anyone was looking. He moved unnoticed within groups of people visiting other stalls and managed to swipe a few other things he could sell in addition to his breakfast for the day. He ate a sweet pastry as he walked and offered a piece to Boreas as well but the merlin refused, as he preferred fresh meat. Bowyn was more than happy to have the all the stolen sweets to himself.

”How can you eat that? It smells disgusting.” Boreas said.

”If you were covered in honey I’d likely eat you.” Bowyn replied with a snide smirk. ”Honey roasted merlin, delicious.” Bowyn continued as he headed through the alleyways to the seedier part of Doromos.

”Hmmp then you’d have no friend.” The merlin quipped, unbothered. He knew the winter fae would never eat him, and he could out fly any hungry fairy that dared try.

”And I would have peace and quiet at last.” Bowyn answered. He noticed a wolf based demihuman giving him a strange look. Bowyn, having never properly learned his zoolinguism always spoke aloud when talking to the bird. This was not an issue when the two were alone in the forests but in a city he frequently looked like a crazy person talking to a bird. He didn’t mind the strange looks, and it helped keep the city dwellers from making casual conversation with him. They made their way to tavern and once inside he approached a large minotaur who stood in front of the door to the back room.

”I’m here to see Kala.” He said to the large minotaur. The man stepped aside and allowed Bowyn to enter the backroom. He approached a desk and behind the desk sat Kala, a demihuman female with features much like a Vervet Monkey. She flashed a toothy grin as Bowyn approached and began emptying his pockets onto her desk.

“What have you brought me?” She asked, half amused as she used her hands and tail to sift through the collection of jewelry, perfumes, herbs, and handful of knick knacks that were essentially junk. Kala picked up a wooden carving of an amoras with her tail and waved it at him. “Children’s toys, Bowyn, what am I supposed to do with this, eh?” She asked before tossing it aside.

“I think you just kinda zoom it around and pretend like it’s flying.” Bowyn said as he picked up the toy she had tossed a side and facetiously waved it around making zooming sounds. He stopped when Kala shot him a look that clearly showed she was not amused and he put toy back in his pocket. ”So, some of it's junk, folks with too much money, love junk, someone will buy it. The rest of it’s solid. What’ll you give me?”

“Trade or amas?” She asked.

”Four grams and the rest in amas.” Bowyn said, and Kala began measuring out skaula on the scales she kept on her desk. He accepted the hallucinogens and the handful of amas she offered him. ”Pleasure as always.” He said bowing slightly as he turned to leave.

“Send Knox in on you way out.” Kala said as he left the room.

As Bowyn exited the room he tapped the minotaur on the chest as he walked by. “Boss lady wants to see you.” The minotaur grunted in annoyance at the fairy but walked into the room closing the door behind him, likely to clear off Kala’s desk.

“Jaroth would’ve given you more amas.” Boreas said as they left the tavern.

“True but he doesn’t sell.” Bowyn said tapping the pocket where he’d put the skaula.

“Does this mean I get to look forward to two hours of you talking to ice in the forest? I simply cannot wait.” Boreas said. Before Bowyn had a chance to respond a disturbing sight filled the sky above. A giant image of Aklenroth rambling on about humans. Bowyn snorted and shook his head, the foolish elves had really done it now, summoning humans back to Avalia as if that would be enough to do anything about Aklenroth’s rule. “Sounds like a lot of people are gonna die, huh?” Boreas said with genuine concern. They both knew that searches conducted by Aklenroth’s forces were rarely peaceful.

“Indeed, that’s what happens when you meddle.” Bowyn said shaking his head. Seems that elves were too old to learn that things weren’t going to go back to the old ways. Now that Aklenroth had control of Avalia he was never going to giving that up, and standing between the lich, and what he wanted was a guaranteed way to get yourself, or those you love, killed. Luckily for Bowyn he planned to stay out of his whole mess by doing drugs in the forest and minding his own business.

“I bet, those humans are going to be awfully scared and confused, roaming around so far from home, kind of like a certain fairy was when I found him.” Boreas continued, somehow managing to sound condescending with a voice Bowyn could hear only in his mind.

“I am not helping the humans. I like being alive.” Bowyn answered.

“Since you don’t seem to like your own kind or anyone else from around here, maybe you’ll like creatures from another place. Could be fun to try.” Boreas said, he always thought it would be better for Bowyn to have friends other than him.

“Doubtful. And you what I won’t like, having my head removed from the rest of my body or dying in some other terrible way those who serve Aklenroth would dream up once these morons are caught.” Bowyn said as they made their way towards the gates of the city and drew closer to the forests that bordered it. Boreas eventually gave up on trying to get the fairy to find a human. Bowyn was right after all it did sound rather dangerous so Boreas figured he’d try again next time they were near civilization to get the fairy to make friends.

Cade took a second to reflect on Ayita’s words, he was surprised to find so much in common with a human from another world but it seemed that no matter where they came from creatures from all over shared similar struggles. She understood the power her being in Avalia brought, the hope that it could ignite in people and he respected the bravery it took to be willing to fight for a land that was not her own. He wondered if all humans were so noble, he hoped they were and that the many of them had been brought to Avalia because if so, he liked their chances against Aklenroth. Cade didn’t know what a ‘white man’ was but he could empathize with the experience of an outside enemy taking one’s family.

“It seems no matter the world there are always those who allow themselves to be corrupted by power and greed. This saddens me.” Cade shook his head,-while there were many vices he could understand falling to, power and greed had never appealed to him and the thought of destroying other’s lives for gain was something he’d never be able to understand. “After we make this place safe again we should ask the elves to bring your people here. With humans like you we cannot fail.” Cade said confidently. Although he could not defeat her enemies who lie a world away, he could offer the same hope her presence offered him.

Hunger, now that was a problem Cade could solve. As they headed deeper into the forest, he kept vigilant for tracks of something tasty to eat. “Nothing to hunt with? That is unfortunate, however shall we manage?” Cade teased as he tapped his claws against his cheekbone as if in deep thought. “Oh, would you look at that I have remembered to pack claws and big ol’ teeth.” He said flashing a toothy grin and holding out his fingers and wiggling them as if he was discovering his own claws for the first time. “I will hunt something for us to eat and you can get fruits. We should try and find some fresh water too, there will be fruit and animals near there. What sort of weapons do you normally hunt with? We can work on find you some as well.” Cade asked as they navigated through the forest.

It wasn’t too long before they came across a stream with cool, fresh, water. Cade pointed out some of the trees that bared edible fruits but a cat could not survive on fruits alone. He removed the halberd from his back and placed it near one of the trees, it was not for hunting and he would be faster unburdened. Cade took a moment to sniff the air, his mind sorted out the different scents he caught, and as he did his mind cleared of his troubles and focused only on its current task. He lowered down to all fours and began moving swiftly and silently as he searched for prey. He came across his prey, he dug his claws deep into the ground as a hare, significantly large than those on earth, nibbled at the greenery. Cade waited for his moment and when it was time, he launched himself forward towards the hare, closing much of the distance between them before the other animal had a chance to react. He chased after the hare and within seconds Cade’s longer legs won out as he tackled the animal and his teeth wrapped around the large hare’s neck. His teeth crushed the hare’s neck and after Cade was sure the animal was dead, he licked the blood from his mouth, so as not to alarm the human. He slung the large hare over his shoulder and carried it back to the stream where he’d left Ayita and his halberd.

As they headed back towards the forest Cade considered the situation that they were now in, sure it would be harder to find allies with such a bounty out for humans but he did not believe it impossible. There were still Avalians out there who had the strength to stand against the lich and his forces and they would just have to find them. The thought of abandoning Ayita to whatever fate would find her was not one he was willing to consider.

“If you wish for me to leave, I will, but helping you is not a burden. Many things I do are likely to get me killed, that doesn’t bother me, seeing Avalia descend further into darkness scares me more. The Lich’s power is…” Cade paused as he tried to think of a word that could encapsulate the unnatural and abhorrent evil that was necromancy but failed to really think of one. “more than just evil. He not only cheats his own natural death but he rips creatures away from their final rest, forcing the dead to serve him and to fight his battles. It goes against nature and the longer it goes on, the deeper it wounds Avalia. This is my home and I can’t help but think that although it may have been the Elves who did the magic, it was Avalia herself that called you here. Avalia needs to regain balance and rid herself of the lich. And I feel called to help with that. So, whether I’m helping you, or someone else, I’m going to be spending my remaining time looking for danger. My family is gone, I am the last of my clan, all I have left to live for is Avalia, my home.”

While Cade was more than willing to die for his home, he realized that this was not Ayita’s home. He had been more focused on what Avalia needed that he had neglected to even ask if she wanted to be a part of this. He wasn’t even sure if the elves would be able to send a human back even if they could ask them. If they could send her back he doubted further that it could be done now that Aklenroth was aware of the DROM’s being used. “As much as I want to help Avalia, this is not your home. I will also do what I can to help you get home, if you wish, but I think that will not be possible right now, we can always try though, seek out some elves in the forests.” Cade suggested. He tried to sound like he knew what to do next, but with the Sun Elf Village off the table he wasn’t very sure what would be the right next move. Cade wasn’t used to thinking ahead and it was truly exhausting. He was thankful to be back in the forest both for cover and because when it came to a hunt he could rely on his instincts. No strategizing just him doing what came natural to a cat, searching for prey and listening to his instinct and muscle memory to then take his prey down. He knew they both needed to eat and solving that problem was much easier to tackle than the rest of their troubles. “For now, at least, we should find food. What do humans normally eat?”

Before Cade had a chance to speak about the wonders of the Sun Elf Village a ghastly imagine appeared in the skies; an undead robed figure whom any Avalian would instantly recognize. He instinctively yet out a low growl that caught in the back of his throat as the accursed creature spoke, the fur on his hackles and tail stood on end in both rage and freight. It took him longer than he’d care to admit to realize this was some sort of illusion, more magical trickery from a creature with no real strength. The Lich King made an offer more generous than he would likely honor, it made the cities and towns instantly unsafe, for while he could trust the majority of light elves, fairies, and demihumans there was no way he could believe that not one in a village of thousands would not turn them in for personal gain. As the image left the horizon Cade felt his body shudder with fear.

“The lies of a creature of pure evil. Should you turn yourself into him I have no doubt he will end your life or find some way to compel you towards evil Ayita.” Cade said, urgency to his tone. “Although I have known the elves here to be creatures of light I cannot promise that not one among them would turn you in for greed and security. We should return to the forest, we can hunt there, this land has many animals and food to be foraged. It would be safer not to take chances in crowds.” Cade said, saddened that he could not show her the beauty that Avalia offered, but even a mighty cat was no match for legions of undead. As much as he feared Aklenroth, and his wrath, he could never break his oath to the human to protect her, to live as a coward was worse than a thousand painful deaths in his eyes. However, something Aklenroth said had given him hope, he had said humans. Ayita was not the only human in Avalia, the elves, or what he assumed had been the work of light elves, had brought more humans. There was rebellion in the air, his home was broken and this was Avalia’s chance to regain balance, and Cade needed to have a part in that.

“At the very least we must disguise you, I have no magic and little to offer in the ways of deception.” Cade said removing his hooded robe, it would be large on her but he hoped that his scent upon it could help mask her human one and the hood at least could hide her strange ears. “This could help hide you some, if there are other humans out there we should seek out allies in the same boat and we should distance ourselves from places we have been seen. Although Inori said the orc would not turn you in I fear this offer would be more than he can ignore. Luckily we are far from Daka, the island of the Lich, his armies would take days to reach this place but his dragon can cover ground far faster than those on foot.” He added wishing for more cover than the sparse area they currently stood.

Although Inori was a powerful ally he was also a creature Cade did not feel he could trust, and with the sun elves possibly providing assistance he could feel more at easy around creatures of light. He continued on without the demon until the city was within sight; smaller homes and structures in the foreground with its taller and more ornate buildings further back stretching up towards the sky. The forest was clearing away and the light of the new day now lit up the beautiful kingdom of elves. As a cat, Cade was used to staying up most of the night and through dawn, midday when the sun was high was his preferred time for sleeping anyways. He did not know if the same was true for his new traveling companion, he did not know much about humans; what they ate or how often they needed to sleep, but due to the similarities they shared with elves he assumed they functioned similarly. Cade was already thinking about food, traveling all night had made him hungry and much of the elven food was quite good, but it was more important to make sure the human was taken care of first.

“The gates of the Sun Elf Kingdom,” Cade said gesturing up ahead. “we can get some food if you’re hungry, there are a few inns if you need some rest, or we could go seek council with the elders here. If the elves are the ones who summoned you hopefully there is more to their plan than just bringing you here.” He said nearing the entrance. At least he hoped they had more of a plan that just summoning a human although Cade couldn’t really figure out what their plan would be, he was never very good with planning. He was hoping they at least had forces enough to go against the lich, but that seemed doubtful. “Perhaps the elves can show you how to use magic as well.” He added, that at least seemed likely.

Cade nodded in agreement, the Sun Elf Village was close by and they were reasonable creatures who would either help or at the very least would not turn the human in. It was a good plan to keep moving, it would make them harder to find if the lich’s minions were searching for the human. He could certainly trust the light elves more than a demon, and with them around he wouldn’t need to watch the demon as closely. It was not lost on Cade that Inori seemed to use magic constantly; the man had seated himself upon a conjured spear just to talk, and it seemed like a needless display of power. The demon’s disdain for the lich and those who followed the king was at least agreeable, though he doubted any demon was capable of caring for another with any altruistic intent.

“The light elves will likely aid you, plus the Village of the Sun Elves is beautiful. They have Amoras, it’s like a boat that sails through the sky, and hover boards, which are like the Amoras but small and you can stand on them, and great jumping shoes…” Cade said, excitedly explaining the cool things he’d seen there before, when he got to the part about the shoes he jumped up to emphasize his point, as he talked his tail swished about with excitement, matching his tone. “and they let you jump at least twice as high as you normally can, it’s great fun.” He hoped that the Sun Elf Village could show Ayita that this world wasn’t all bad, sure some parts were terrifying especially to someone not from here but there were also beautiful cities, wonderful creatures, and enjoyable technology as well. Cade began walking at a leisurely pace towards the village, so that the human and Inori, with his small legs, could reasonably keep up with the large cat’s stride.

“The Sun Elves have big lovely buildings that seem like they could just about touch the clouds and it’s truly a spectacle at dawn when the light hits right. Not quite as lovely as Roshmi City, but nicer than Lora, that’s where I’m from.” He continued. Cade’s clan had been poor by most standards though he never considered himself poor; he had strong family connections, they hunted most of their own food, and even when it was cold his fur and the pelts of hunted animals kept him warm. Sure his family didn’t have money for things like hoverboards and solar boxes when he was a cub but he never felt like he missed anything. Upon traveling when he was older he got see all of the amazing things he’d never had and while they were fun to experience on occasion he never felt like expensive toys were necessities.

“Those are the main Demihuman cities, there’s a Demi equivalent of just about every animal. My grandmother used to say that eons ago when humans first started coming here some of them made a deal to stay in our world, they traded their magic away and they merged with the beasts here and that was where our race came from. The bravest warriors made their deal with the cats, of course, I don’t know if that’s true but it’s’ what she’d say.” Cade continued to talk while he walked, filling the human in on the lighter aspects of Avalia. “So what’s your world like? Is it all humans or do you have many races?” Cade asked, he wondered if her world even had things like jumping shoes, magic, or even cats. He also hoped to change the subject from the lich as well, he knew it wouldn't be long before his forces were after them and they'd be spending a great deal of time worrying about the King, or if they were very unlucky, not much time at all.

Cade returned the human’s smile, delighted that she had accepted his price. The thought of many stories from another world told by stranger whose kind hadn’t set foot in Avalia in a full century was sure to be a truly novel experience, but now was not the time for stories now was the time to make sure the human was safe from the Lich. His ears twitched as Korvash growled and his eyes caught the movement of the orc as he reached for his weapon. He tensed in anticipation of a fight with the orc, and his weight shifted to the balls of his feet as he prepared himself to move swiftly. His tail twitched with excitement but as he focused his attention on the orc, Inori’s voice, loud and commanding, startled him slightly raising the hackles from shoulders to tail. Bright red chains enveloped the orc’s massive arm. This was not the kind of magic Cade was used to seeing, unlike what he had seen the elves or fairies do, this was demon’s magic and he realized he wasn’t entirely sure what demons were capable of doing. He knew he had underestimated Inori; this small creature could not physically over power an orc but was able and willing to use magic to control Korvash. Although he still saw the orc as an enemy, he also felt a small bit of sympathy for the creature to have his will suppressed and controlled by a lesser creature. Incidences like this were why Cade didn’t care for magic; he saw it as unearned power certain races happened to be born with, that allowed things like a fragile bag of bones to rule an entire land or a four-foot demon to control a beast twice his size.

As the orc left, Cade wondered if they were now left with the more unsavory member of the duo. At least with an orc you knew what you were getting and what they were capable of, with this demon he wasn’t so sure. Cade had though Inori seemed honorable when he offered to help the human, but his willingness to control the orc with magic troubled Cade, as did the hint of threat in his voice as he dared to scold Cade for what he saw as childish outburst, and the realization that he was sure exactly the extent of the demon’s abilities. But against his instinct he had promised to help the human, and if the demon possessed such power it would be in her best interest to have that power around as there was enough danger with the Lich King as an enemy already. He also felt the need to keep an eye on Inori should he betray the human as well, he would have to go against his instincts to give the human her best chance at staying safe. What worse was that he was going to have to play nice with demon, swallow his pride and let the demon’s remarks go, at least for now. Cade forced himself to relax his posture, no longer in a fighter’s stance, although his tail continued to twitch, ever so slightly, with annoyance.

“Apologize, Inori, perhaps I have had too much ale tonight.” He said, his tone very close to sincerity. “Can we trust that Korvash is not on his way to sell us all out to the Lich right now?” He asked, wondering how strong a sway the demon held over the orc. Surly the king would offer some sort of reward for this information and he placed no trust in orc loyalty.
