Bowyn was thankful for the free room provided by Elleta and Belle, and the house, which was a lot more extravagant than he expected, was more comfortable and secure than the tavern. It was comforting to spend time alone in a room, not quite as comforting as the absolute solitude of the forest, but as close as he was going to get in the foreseeable future. With just himself and Boreas he didn’t have to keep himself so guarded, and it wasn’t until he finally had the chance to relax that he realized how exhausting it was to keep his guard up all the time. As much as he hoped for a full night of restful sleep his mind kept that out of his reach. Nightmares of the undead continued to haunt his dreams, the decomposing visions of Aeryn, and of his own failure to act. The nightmares, as unpleasant as they were, served as reminder for what he still had to do, his burden to carry until he fixed his mistake of leaving Aeryn as a ghoul.

The day that followed saw Torvi and Belle learning the ways of elves and training in their magic, training that Bowyn opted out of; what use did a fairy have for learning to pretend to be an elf. He also saw little use in weapons training, there was no way to learn enough in a single day that would make him chose a weapon over the magic that had been a part of him since birth. He would’ve liked to use the day to form and sculpt ice from a pound on the property but the overbearing heat of Roshmi would require too much energy to maintain the ice. Instead Bowyn found a spot outside far away from the others to meditate. If he could not properly rest while asleep then resting while awake would be his bet in keeping up his strength. He didn’t share the others enthusiasm for attending a ball in Roshmi, it instead filled him with a sense of dread.

The second night was similar to the first night, and every night of the past week or so, but his much needed bath that morning had calmed his nerves for a bit. Bowyn had found clothes in the days before that suited him; black trousers, a white shirt, and a blue and silver vest. With a slight sense of whimsy he had even gotten a small bowtie that matched the fabric of the vest for Boreas. The bird found the idea of wearing said bowtie absolutely abhorrent but reluctantly agreed to do so only for the sake of being included in the groups outing. The mask he had chosen went well for someone constantly accompanied by a bird and overall Bowyn looked much more put together than he normally did. This was not his first venture into the world inhabited by wealthy elites. He had no doubts though that the more prestigious events of his own village paled in comparison to a ball held in Roshmi. When he heard Belle call for both him and Torvi he felt the sense of dread in his gut rise again. There had once been a time where he would’ve enjoyed such a thing, back when he had attended fancy parties with Aeryn, but to attend one now without her, and while she still walked the earth as an unnatural creature, just seemed like a betrayal.

“Careful Torvi, talking about being naked might summon our friend with the apple.” Bowyn said with a smirk as he entered the living room where the other two already stood, dressed and ready. “You may not have your weapons but you have magic now, a weapon that is much harder to disarm from you. Know your magic and it will know you, it will understand what you want and bend your element to your will. That is more power than any blade could ever possess.” Bowyn said while crafting a small knife out of the moister in the air. He then tossed the knife straight up and willed it to change to snow before it started falling back down. The small amount of snow then turned back into the ambient water vapor before it finished falling. The party trick from his home and the sight of snow again made him feel a bit homesick, which was strange because he was pretty sure hated his home. “And if we encounter trouble Boreas can always peck the eyes of our enemies to even the odds." Bowyn added with a smirk as the bowtied bird nodded with agreement.

The rest of the time at Roshmi City leading up to the ball had been great fun. Cade enjoyed exploring the city with the new friends they had made and spending time surrounded by the natural beauty of the greenhouse where they often met up. Even more than the greenhouse he enjoyed eating at the various vendors around marketplace after said meetings as Roshmi was a city with food from all different races and cultures of Avalia. He found Ilan and Regulus to both be great company, both demihumans seemed to have a down to earth and compassionate nature making them easy to get along with. Eventually it had been suggested that they attend the masquerade ball being hosted in the city as other rebels would be meeting there as well and it would serve as an excellent place to make new allies while remaining in disguise.

Cade had never been to a fancy ball before and while he normally embraced new experiences this one left him feeling more than a bit nervous. He was from a modest village, all the parties he’d ever been to had been very informal and even the experience of wearing formal clothing was strange to him. Although this opportunity to make new allies was one he couldn’t pass up, Cade worried he would stick out far too much when surrounded by the most elite members of the grand city of Roshmi. He had managed to quickly find an outfit that suited him and just barely met the standards of a grand ball with a great deal of help from the tailor. Although the tailor did a fine job and the clothes were certainly well-made Cade found them overly stiff and constricting. He was easily more comfortable when dressed for battle or adventure than he was for a formal evening. He did thank the tailor for the help though and was sure to be careful not to fiddle with the clothing too much so as not to accidently tear anything with his claws.

Finding a mask to wear proved a much more enjoyable experience. He tried many different ones on finding a great deal of amusement in looking like a different demihuman. This kept him entertained for a while as it took Ayita a bit longer to decide on clothing. He could only assume the fellow warrior was sharing the strange experience of dressing unlike one’s self. Eventually he settled on a leopard mask deciding that this would make it simple for his friends to spot him and he didn’t want to disguise himself from his allies. Eventually Ayita emerged from the dressing rooms and Cade stopped playing with the various masks the shop offered to see what she had decided on.

“Ayita you look as if you are draped in night’s sky itself and just as radiant.” He said as he did he best to bow formally. “Do you think Sakura will recognize me with this mask?” He asked as he lowered the leopard mask down over his face.

Liam studied the jittery young wolf who seemed more concerned with the relatively minor battle wounds the others had suffered over her own, more troubling, injuries. She hadn’t asked for any means to contact her own pack or even family which only made him wondered what sort of wolves she had known before now. To be a lone wolf, in his mind, was an unnatural state, they were pack animals and the wolf in them required community just as much as it desired food and space to run. The thought of wolves out there, and of alpha’s out there, abandoning there own was worse than just being cruel it was a betrayal of what it means to be a werewolf.

“You’re certainly looking much better than you did last night, werewolf healing factor’s certainly a huge perk. I imagine the other two from last night are fine as well but they aren’t part of my pack, just other local wolves. But we all chose to help you, because you called, and it is in a wolfs nature to answer that call. So, you don’t owe any of us an apology, wolves look out for their own. You’re a guest here Luna, not an inconvenience, and if you need anything just ask. For example, if you need something more appetizing than Marcy’s cooking we can always send someone to go pick up a pizza.” He added trying his best to make Luna feel a bit more comfortable here.

Before he had a chance to say anything further the door flew open and a young werewolf, Kevin, burst inside panting. “We’ve caught an intruder.” He announced.

“Vampire?” Liam asked although it would be strange for vampires to be out making trouble during the daytime. He tensed up more than ready for another fight with vampires.

Kevin shook his head as he took a moment to catch his breath. “Another wolf.” He said regaining his composure and standing up straight now.

Liam sighed, slightly annoyed and relaxed again as he lead Kevin out of the trailer. “Kev we’re on high alert here for vampires, this is a public campgrounds, we can’t be hassling every werewolf out for a hike around here.”

“This guy seemed real shifty and he wouldn’t say what he was up to.” Kevin explained, the young scout clearly overeager to have found a threat.

Liam followed Kevin back to where they had found another wolf, half annoyed that his scouts weren’t able to handle the situation on their own and hoping they weren’t out making trouble with the locals. The other werewolf, a young blond guy, was casually stretching and certainly didn’t look like he posed a huge threat to the pack.

“My apologizes if these guys have been harassing you, sometimes the scouts can get a bit overzealous. You got business here kid?” Liam asked the unfamiliar werewolf, while he didn’t look like a threat he could certainly see the others finding him suspicious, though giving his apparent young age he could just as easily be a smartass who stumbled into the wrong part of the campgrounds.

Location: Crime scene in the alleyways of Ember Grove

Detective Wyatt Hawthorne rode in the passenger seat of the nondescript black car while his partner, Detective Brady drove. His partner always insisted on driving and when pushed about it he went on some tangent about not being able to trust kids these days to put down the damn phone and watch the road. Although Brady didn’t look that much older than Wyatt, he was a seventy something year old werewolf, so he was about as much fun as any disgruntled boomer. All in all, it was better not to get the old dog going as Wyatt didn’t care to listen to yet another rant about his generation. Early this morning a body had been found in dumpster and the first on the scene had said it looked like an animal mauling. Funny thing about animal attacks was they didn’t tend to toss a body out with the trash. Bizarre animal attacks were nothing new to Ember Grove, and while the majority of the cities police department remained blissfully unaware of the supernatural elements in town crimes with the obvious markers of supernatural involvement were frequently kicked over to Wyatt and his partner by those who truly knew what went on here.

They pulled up to an alley way already blocked off by the bright yellow police tape and the two detectives headed into the alley. A steady rain was already doing it’s best to muddle the investigation, washing away traces of the killer. They got a good look at the body before it was taken away, deep puncture wounds in the poor kid’s back and covered in bruises and abrasions. The man’s ID read Kyran Wright, and Wyatt recognized him from a local bar, Alexi’s, where Kyran had worked. They continued poking around the alleyway, noting the bloodied cracks in some of the bricks. If the state of Kyran’s body hadn’t made it obvious enough, the amount of force in which he was tossed around the alleyway meant whoever killed this guy had a lot of rage.

"Pretty cut and dry werewolf attack, any new players in town?” Wyatt asked his partner once they were out of earshot of the other, strictly human, officers.

“Several, can’t say I know much about any of ‘em though.” His partner replied.

“I’ve seen the victim working over at Alexi’s, we should stop by there and see if he had any enemies. Maybe he pissed off the wrong customer last night.” Wyatt suggested, he didn’t know much about the guy beyond where he worked so he hoped maybe his co-workers would have a bit more insight. Brady simply nodded in agreement as his cell phone rang and he took a moment to take the call.

“Seems like a good place to start but it’ll have to wait, we’ve got another body in dumpster over by Twisted Lizard, this one’s been drained of blood and has some rather telling puncture wounds on the neck.” Brady said shaking his head. It seemed that the supernatural residents of Ember Grove had been rather busy last night.

"Sounds like a conspiracy to make sure we’re working all weekend long.” Wyatt added dryly.

Liam had spent the night sleeping in a folding chair outside in front of the trailer where Luna rested. Should anything happen during the night he would personally see to it that the young wolf in his care was protected. It wasn't that he doubted the members of his pack who patrolled the grounds, or the ability of the others to fight should trouble find its way inside the campgrounds, but that he had given his word that she would be safe here, and Liam did not give his word lightly. Seeing another wolf in such a state had affected him deeply; not only the torture endured from the vampires, such brutality was to be expected of creatures of death, but the fact that she had seemed afraid of her own kind as well, made him wonder what sort of hell Luna had escaped from. The threat of these Vie et Mort vampires also weighed heavy on him and Liam couldn’t shake the feeling that he might be biting off more than he could chew. He’d heard of Ember Grove being a hotspot for supernatural activity but the whole town gave off a sense of danger more intense than any he’d felt before. All he could hope for was that he hadn’t brought his pack to a place of certain death.

All of this led to night of restless sleep and the morning greeted him with a heavy and cold rain, an ominously gloomy start to the day. He got up from the chair and stretched out his sore muscles, noting that the bite from the night before had mostly healed up. An outstretched awning provided just enough cover for him to light and smoke a cigarette, which along with a cup of black coffee, was always his preferred way to start a day. Getting some coffee would have to wait until after he checked in on Luna though. So, after finishing his cigarette Liam knocked on the door of the RV so as not to startle Luna before heading inside and out of the rain.

"Hey, little wolf, how you feeling today?” He asked.

Had Noah’s heart still been capable of beating it certainly would have skipped a beat as Desiree addressed him as her ‘favorite boy’. He was left speechless by the queen’s presence; all he could do was listen to his commands and bask in her dark glow. Noah listened closely, overjoyed to have been giving the task of tracking down the mutt for Desiree, he’d make sure Luna paid for the vampires who died because of her. What an exciting game he could make of his new job, toying with the werewolf, convincing her come willing back to Desiree and a place that would bring her nothing but torment. This was a wonderful chance to tune his ability to manipulate others and to impress the older vampires with what he could do. Noah only nodded to show Desiree he understood his tasks; first to clean up his mess then, the more fun game, to track down Luna. He was off as soon as she waved a hand at him, signaling that she was done with him for now.

So, Noah headed back to the woods, following his queens command to clean up the mess he’d left. He figured he could tie the body to a big rock and drop in in the lake, which seemed easy enough but he didn’t much care for the idea of carrying the dead guy around. He was going to get dead guy smell all over him and then the smell would end up in his car, which meant that Noah was going to have to do more work later to get rid of the stench. It also occurred to him that he could’ve brought a change of clothes with him but he hadn’t thought of that before he got to the woods, luckily, he had at least remembered to bring rope which he carried with him.

Noah wandered around the woods trying to retrace his steeps but nothing that he remembered clearly from last night was all that helpful. He could recall with prefect clarity the thrill of stalking and chasing his prey, how their scents had changed once the fear hit them, and how delicious it had all made the blood taste. None of that was helpful in remembering where exactly he’d left a body though, and the woods all looked the same to him, just a bunch of mud and trees. At least the sun was hiding, as nothing but an endless stream of rain shielded Noah from the harsh rays of light that normally kept him inside during the day. Although it was preferable to sunlight the current day’s weather left him soaking wet and covered in mud from the wandering the forest only adding to his annoyance at having to take care of such a boring task when he should be looking for the runaway wolf.

Noah had settled on trying to sniff out the scent of death, a task made more difficult by the pouring rain. This took longer than expected after his nose lead him to a half-eaten dead raccoon before he finally found his way to the dead guy. Oddly enough the dead guy was not alone, and Noah watched as a human poked around at the corpse. He tilted his head and remained silent as he studied the man and wondered if he was a hunter. If he was then Noah had quite the dilemma as Desiree had told him to clean up this mess and to stay away from the hunters. Clearly he could not do both, and since he had already spent so much time looking for the dead guy, Noah decided he did not think the man snooping around was a hunter and he was pretty sure he had enough rope to weigh down two bodies in and drop them into the lake. It wasn’t like Desiree could expect him to know which humans were hunters after all.

“See something you like?” Noah asked as a playful smirk crossed his face. “I could show you how I did it.” He added widening his smile to show off his fangs.

Time: Night
Location: Roshmi City—Leaky Tap Tavern
Interactions: Torvi @Tae, Belle @Potter, Elthrael @Dezuel

After having had several glasses of mead at the tavern, Bowyn continued this streak throughout the day, committing fully to not spending his first day in Roshmi sober. With Belle around he felt like he could relax more, it no longer fell on him alone to help Torvi. Belle seemed to be trustworthy enough, she had almost a full day to betray them and it hadn’t happened. She also had connections to the elves, likely the same ones who brought humans here, and so the pair of humans could now look out for each other. He welcomed the release from responsibility and took this as permission for a reprieve from the sobriety he had suffered though during the last few days. Bowyn doubted he could ever drink enough to truly drown his sorrows, as alcohol never provided him the same relief that drugs could, but he knew he could always numb himself enough to keep his sorrows at bay. During their day of shopping, or more accurately, thievery, Bowyn had stolen a flask off a demihuman bear that contained a spirit that he’d not tried before and that was delightfully potent. Throughout the day Bowyn kept himself inebriated enough to enjoy the day but not enough to become sloppy, for he still understood the danger of the situation and he was no longer alone in a forest.

It was strange to Bowyn that he was actually enjoying the company of others. At first, he wondered if he simply got along better with humans than he did with anyone of his own world but even Elleta was easy to get along with. He wanted to chalk it all up to their shared situation, the need for allies while under a constant sense of danger but, as Boreas so boldly pointed out to him during the day, it would seem that when he gave people a chance not everyone was so quick to let him down. It was also entirely possible that he was just drunk enough to be content in the present something he could not normally accomplish sober. He wasn’t sure what to do with this newfound sense of camaraderie but so long as these allies shared a similar goal, he didn’t see them getting in the way of his own goal. As long as he was not betrayed before Aeryn was laid to rest anything that happened after that was trivial to him. Accepting that his own death would likely be both soon and inevitable had certainly made others seem like less of a threat to him.

Once night came, they returned to the Leaky Tap, finding in almost exactly as they had left it and with the same strange cloaked man that they had seen before. Had he been waiting around for them to return all day? It certainly seemed like he had, with his not so discreet dropping of an apple near them, and Bowyn wondered how he knew they’d even be back at the tavern. He didn’t have to bother with questioning the strange man as Belle, Elleta, and Torvi all had that one covered, so Bowyn instead studied the man as the others questioned his motives. He didn’t like the unsettling grin that showed of sharp teeth that the man wore proudly. The man’s responses and grin made it clear that he enjoyed antagonizing others, a tactic Bowyn was not unfamiliar. It seemed what the cloaked man wanted was to know what Bowyn was doing so far south which he found disconcerting. Not only did the strange man with pointy teeth seem to know where they were staying but he was questioning Bowyn’s presence and so openly talking about knowing a human as well.

“I’m on vacation, seeing all the cities and forests I can before they burn to the ground. I don’t know if you’ve heard but things have gotten quite dangerous up north. As for my friends here, it is easier to find fine company when you’re not offering to peel them.” Bowyn responded dryly, the man was clearly asking for trouble and while Bowyn was not interested in trouble he also didn’t care for the way in which he addressed the others. An uneasy Boreas shifted on Bowyn’s shoulder, the merlin watching the strange man closely as well, feeding off Bowyn’s own distrust. “Why so interested in my kind? You do seem rather hot-blooded maybe you need to cool off?” He added.

Time: Morning
Location: Vie et Mort HQ
Interaction with: The Dark Queen herself, Desiree @Potter

Noah’s fun ended as the night gave way to dusk; the sun’s unforgiving rays driving him back to the community he called home. He was back at the headquarters of Vie et Mort for only a handful of moments before he ran into another vampire, Jade, informing him that Desiree had requested him. This news filled him with excitement, it was always an honor to be in the presence of the Queen. Although Jade gave him no further information as to what it was Desiree wanted but he hoped she had a job for him, something he could do to further prove his worth to her and Vie et Mort. Even if he were to be scolded, to be scolded personally by the queen still meant he was worthy of her time, that she had taken an interest into molding him into a better vampire.

It would not due to stand in front of his queen looking like he’d just crawled in off the streets so first Noah headed to home to clean himself up, change clothes, and to brush the tangled mop atop his head. Once satisfied that he looked presentable and dressed in his usual predominantly black clothing, he headed off to see what it was his queen wanted. Noah hoped she had another job for him, his last job had been quite the fun challenge, manipulating the wolf girl that Desiree had been keeping. Although taunting and toying with prey seemed to come more easily to him, deception and manipulation did not, but these were skills all great vampires had and so Noah needed to learn them too. While he had been successful in gaining the wolf girls trust Noah wasn’t sure if this was his skill improving or simply that werewolves were nothing more than dumb beasts.

Noah strode confidently into the longue where many of the vampires hung around to pass the time. He never spent too much time here, many of the vampires of Vie et Mort remembered him from his time as weak human, and some of them still looked at him like he was weak and Noah didn’t care for that. But he belonged here now, the queen had requested him, and soon enough he would prove that he had earned his place among the more important vampires of the collective. He bowed his head in respect as he approached Desiree. “You requested my presence, my Queen. How may I serve you?” Noah asked, as ambition shone through his eyes.

Liam continued to talk to with another werewolf, relaying what Luna had mentioned about the vampires they had encountered. He kept an eye on Sorrel as she got of the car with about as much difficulty as could be expected. Another showed up with clothes for him and a grateful Liam quickly dressed himself as Cyrus burst out of the RV looking for Sorrel. He was glad to see at least one of the other wolves was looking better but based on how pale and uncomfortable Sorrel looked she needed her wound tended to rather quickly. He had to admit she hid it well and there was very little he respected more than strength. He sent the werewolf off to grab food and clothes for Luna once she was feeling a bit better and headed over to Sorrel and Cyrus.

”Right let’s get you patched up. Cyrus, glad to see you conscious again.” Liam said as he put an arm around Sorrel to help keep her steady and led her into the RV. While the RV itself was pretty old the interior had been stripped out and replaced. The kitchen and dining area still had an old sink but the rest had been swapped for cabinets on one side and a couple small couches on the other. Inside the cabinets were the basics of first aid supplies along with various medications they could swipe from hospitals. In the back there was a small bed where they had set Luna in, and another wolf Marceline was tending to her. Once he helped Sorrel to one of the couches another wolf entered, Jason a former combat medic and current werewolf.

“Stab wound, significant blood loss.” Liam said, gesturing towards Sorrel. The medic immediately went to work grabbing martials necessary to clean and dress the wound. While Jay was more than competent at treating trauma, his bedside manner was severely lacking, and Liam was pleased to see Marceline, someone with a softer approach, attending to Luna. Luna looked worse off than the rest of them, and on top of that being alone in a strange place after being nearly killed by vampires would leave most feeling uneasy. Marceline had already placed a catheter in her arm with fluids going and was administering the necessary medications.

“Hi there, I’m Liam.” He said softly as he took a knee beside the bed. “I just wanted to let you know that you’re going to be safe here. My pack’s out patrolling the grounds, and they won’t let any vampires get in here. You’re under my protection until your back on your feet. Then we’ll make those vampires pay for what they’ve done to you. You have my word on that.“ Liam spoke with absolute sincerity. His life’s work was taking out any threat to wolves and while he’d faced some nasty threats before it was clear these vampires were worse. They weren’t just killing wolves; judging by the state Luna was in, these vampires were in it to torture. More than anything he’d seen before these Vie et Mort vampires needed dealt with, and he was now itching for the chance.
