“Master Goichi!” Ryuhei threw open the sliding door to the training room where his master was currently teaching an intermediary class and rushed into the room. He’d left a visible trail of open doors and disgruntled bystanders as he’d raced through the dojo you find the old man. “On the news! Parsley city. It was destroyed!”

He needn’t have hurried. Judging from the way his master was staring at the wall with a hard expression on his face, unerringly looking in the direction where the alien aggressor has landed, it was clear the old man had already detected the huge spike in energy as Dyce had wiped out the city. “The whole city? This ki is greater than any I’ve ever felt but…” Suddenly, the old master’s eyes widened in horror, his face turning pale as he turned to face the groups of students in the room with him. “Leave here, immediately. Ryuhei, escort them out and do not return until I tell you to.”

Ryuhei wanted to argue, to ask why, but Goichi’s expression brooked no argument and the student hurried to comply with the order. He corralled the confused and worried students out of the room, leading them out of the building and into the street outside. He tried to keep everyone together, but as a few minutes passed with everyone waiting around some of the students heading home, assuming training was over for the day. It wasn’t like Ryuhei could tell them any differently to make them stay, when he himself had no idea why Master Goichi had sent them outside.

He was about to go back into the dojo and ask his teacher what was going on when one of the students caught his attention by pointing to the sky. Looking up Ryuhei saw a streak of yellow energy approaching the city from the direction of Parsley city, growing larger with every passing second as it seemed to angle its approach directly for them. Before Ryuhei could shout a warning the streak suddenly dove down and struck the roof of the dojo, crashing through it with little effort as a deafening explosion rang out from inside. What students remained chose to run away as Ryuhei ran back into the building, disregarding Goichi’s orders as he made directly for the training room where he had last seen the old man.

The scene he found inside was like something from a nightmare, because surely this must be a dream. The alien from the news, the one who had just wiped out an entire city in one blast, stood in the middle of the dojo with his back to Ryuhei. There was a hole in the ceiling from where the intruder has burst into the room and a pile of rubble was under the alien’s feet. In one outstretched hand the alien held up a person, bloodied and battered, gasping for breath as a green-skinned hand grasped his throat, was Master Goichi.

“Master!”

The alien turned to face him, taking his eyes off of his master and looking over his shoulder to find the disturbance. Blank white eyes pinned Ryuhei to the spot as a chill went down his spine; even without the ability to sense Ki Ryuhei could tell this was an opponent far beyond him, as if seeing the blast he had unleashed on the doomed city wasn’t clue enough. Even so, to defeat Master Goichi so quickly? It had been only seconds since he had arrived and already his Master was this injured.

Maybe it was too soon to count his Master out just yet however. As soon as the alien took his eyes off of him the old fighter took his chance, slamming a hand down on the elbow of the arm holding him and forcing the intruder to release his grip. Master Goichi dropped to his feet and immediately stuck out with a one handed Ki Flash, a burst of energy erupting from his palm to scour the alien’s armour. The green-skinned figure jumped back from the attack, unharmed aside from a blackened mark on his armour.

Unperturbed, the aggressor calmly looked down at the scorch on his armour as Ryuhei ran to his teacher side to see if he was ok. A trickle of blood ran down the side of the old man’s mouth before he wiped it away with the back of his hand, but otherwise his injuries seemed superficial. “I told you to stay outside.” Ryuhei flinched at the admonition, but held his ground. “No matter; it’s too late now. Just try not to die if you insist on fighting.”

“Interesting.” Both Goichi and Ryuhei froze as the alien spoke in surprisingly good English. They both turned to watch as the alien wiped at the black mark on his armour with his hand until it was gone, leaving not a scratch behind. Those cold white eyes lifted to regard them again, pausing on Ryuhei for a fraction of a second before dismissing him entirely and focusing on Goichi. “My scouter wasn’t broken after all; you do have some fight in you.”

Taking the alien’s distraction as a chance to attack Ryuhei dash forward and kicked high at his opponent, his leg coming around in a standard roundhouse kick aimed at the intruders head. It looked like it might make contact until the alien all but disappeared from sight, reappearing a moment later underneath Ryuhei as the alien swept his supporting leg out from under him. The young martial artist was send spinning through the air, but he didn’t stay that way for long as his opponent jumped above him with a leg raised above his head and brought it down in a powerful axe kick that drove Ryuhei into the ground.

His ribs creaking under the force, Ryuhei expelled all of the air from his lungs as he was left gasping for breath. Above him the alien raised his foot again in preparation for another kick before Goichi struck him with a jumping side kick, forcing the intruder back and giving enough time for Ryuhei to scramble to his feet. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, I… LOOK OUT!” Summoning his Ki, Ryuhei coated his arm in a protective layer of it before batting away a glowing yellow projectile the alien sent towards them, redirecting it to destroy the wall instead.

Once again the alien looked unbothered by Goichi’s attack, now even sporting an almost amused looking grin as he regarded them once more. “My name is Dyce. I’m the being who will conquer this pathetic world, just as soon as I purge it of the weaklings who call it home.” For the first time since Ryuhei had arrived Dyce took on a fighting stance, apparently ready to start fighting them properly. Ryuhei’s arm still stung from the Ki blast he had deflected and his ribs still ached from the kick. This guy was going to conquer the entire world? It wasn’t so hard to believe with power like that. “Once I deal with you, I’ll be one step closer to my goal.”

Defeat them? Had he come here because he detected Master Goichi’s power and saw him as a threat?

The alien tensed and Ryuhei prepared himself for an attack, but even though he expected it, Ryuhei could still barely track Dyce as he approached. The would-be conqueror seemingly appeared before them and threw a haymaker as Goichi, the experience fighter blocking the attack by crossing his arms over his chest and taking the hit at the point where his arms overlapped. Even so Goichi was pushed back a few steps and Dyce used the opening to spin and strike at Ryuhei with a spinning backfist. Ryuhei dodged the attack by leaning backwards, the fist sailing within an inch of his face, only to be caught in the stomach by an unexpected side kick. The young martial artist crumpled around the attack and was sent flying away to crash into the wall of the dojo, momentarily winded and stunned.

When he composed himself enough to raise his head it was to see Master Goichi trading blows with Dyce, both fighters blocking and dodging attacks thrown by the other in an at first glance even exchange. On closer inspection however, it was clear that although they appeared even Goichi was having a harder time keeping up and was beginning to show signs of strain while Dyce didn’t appear to be putting in much effort at all.

Dyce dodged an attempted low kick by jumping away, charging a yellow ki blast in one hand and throwing it at his opponent. The ball of energy streaked for Master Goichi’s face only to be blocked at the last second, but the small lapse in concentration this created was what Dyce was after; with his opponent’s vision blocked the conqueror charged forward, spinning into an elbow strike aimed at Goichi’s heart as a short blade extended from Dyce’s elbow. A shout of warning from Ryuhei was the only think that saved his master’s life as the older fighter managed to dodge slightly, the blade piercing his chest but missing his vitals.

Now recovered from the kick and subsequent impact with the wall, as well as being more than motivated by seeing his master almost killed, Ryuhei rushed towards Dyce and shoulder tackled him away from Goichi as the alien pulled his bloodied blade free. Badly wounded, Goichi fell to the floor as his student took over the battle, trading blows with his more powerful opponent with much less efficacy than Goichi himself managed. It was only by coating his arms in a protective layer of ki that Ryuhei was even able to deflect or block the punches and kicks Dyce sent his way and much like his master it was clear that the only reason they were trading blows at all was because Dyce was taking it easy on him.

Ryuhei dodged a particularly slow punch to his head and threw one of his own at Dyce’s chest, at the same time the alien brought up his knee and struck Ryuhei in return. Both fighters pushed off of each other and separated, taking a moment to either catch their breath or, in Dyce’s case, casually wipe some dust from their lapel. Ryuhei was the first to move again, quickly followed by his opponent; Dyce lashed out with a punch but Ryuhei surprised him with a snap kick, infusing his lower leg with his ki as he struck the alien just below his sternum with a textbook Mae Geri. Dyce actually flinched from the attack, showing the first real signs of pain as the ball of Ryuhei’s foot, empowered with ki, sent a lance of pain through his torso.

Staggering back and holding a hand to his middle, Dyce opened his mouth to say something only to be interrupted by another attack. Ryuhei tucked both arms in at his sides as he charged a huge amount of ki into each, before throwing them forward and unleashing a short ranged but intense blast of ki at his opponent.

“You may ha-“

“Ki…. FLASH!”

The bright burst of red ki consumed Dyce entirely, the blast washing over him for a full second or longer before Ryuhei ran out of steam and stopped. In its wake stood Dyce; his armour was a little scuffed, he was bruised and bleeding in places, he was even breathing a little heavily, but he was still standing. And he was angry.

“You insolent PEST!”

Ryuhei offered no defence as Dyce dashed forward a buried a fist in his stomach, simply folding over the attack. He was drained after giving that last attack his all, not to mention the multiple attacks he had taken so far; the Ki Flash was his last, best shot and it had failed.

Dyce raised a leg up before bringing it down on the back of Ryuhei’s head in another axe kick, driving the young martial artists face towards the ground and the alien practically stomped his head into the ground.

The world went black.
@ZAVAZggg I don't think anyone thought the avatar would give you that characters powers.
@CaptainSully when you say character defining items what exactly do you mean? Using Halo as an example, would a Battle Rifle or an Energy Sword be a rare, character defining item? Or would they be generic and rare items are specific items like the Mjolnir armour?
@CaptainSully Well if Jack's fine then I should be ok to use Adam from RWBY; figured I'd go full edgelord with my character.

That's why I was asking about character skins vs characters created by the player. Surely someone who is a fan of Mass Effect is going to look at that and recognise Jack? Or are we just ignoring that?
@CaptainSully hmm, I had a 3D model in mind to use for the face claim but just realised that the model is of a character that is from a series that may be used as a source of items for the game.

Are these models supposed to be the products of character creation, like the RPO book, or skins of existing characters like the movie? If it's the former then using 3D models from video games, especially popular ones, might be an issue.
@CaptainSully to what extent is this based on Ready Player One? Just the fact that it's a kind of dystopian future where people use a virtual world as a form of escape, or does The Universe function like the Oasis? Are the items in the game based off of other media?

Potentially interested. I've got too many RP's on my plate at the moment but since this is apparently not starting for a while I'll still put my name in, in case I'm available when it starts.
As soon as he had spoken the words to spend his skill points, three new messages appeared in front of the Sprite to inform him of his new skills. Keen Sight and Minor Heal All were more or less exactly what he expected them to be, though he had thought the former would simply improve his vision rather than require activation. The ability he was most interest in was Spiritual Awareness; the description seemed reasonable enough in theory, though what it meant in practise would remain to be seen.

Would he be able to see ghosts and the spirits of the departed that no-one else could? Did ‘spiritual’ in this case have something to do with the afterlife and the other side of the veil? Or were there spirits of nature, spirits of things most would consider inanimate, a hidden lifeforce that he would now be able to interact with? He had been hoping for the latter, to become more in tune with nature rather than to become a medium, but either represented interesting opportunities even if communing with the dead likely wouldn’t help with what he had planned.

After the skill messages however was another message; or an alert. His Alert skill was being triggered by something, and sure enough as he read it he could feel a chill run down his spine and goose bumps spread across his skin as some deep, instinctual part of his mind told him to run and cower and hide from what was coming.

The wind picked up around them, a sudden and powerful gale nearly knocking him flag as violent black clouds formed over their heads. Directly over their heads in fact. A red light flashed at its centre and unconsciously he activated Keen Sight to get a close look, revealing it to be a diagram or sigil of some kind. He used Magic Analysis on it, assuming it to be the beginnings of some kind of spell.

Before he could read the results however something fell from out of that light and crashed down in the centre of their camp, shattering rocks and deafening him with the sound of its arrival. The dust cleared slowly and in time Oberon began to make out the figure at its centre. It looked like a knight, clad all in black armour and carrying a huge sword. It looked a lot like a Final Fantasy boss. He activated his Analysis Fusion Skill as the knight began to speak.

Zawisza raised his sword, and the world became fear. The Sprite felt himself wasting away just under the pressure of the knight’s presence, felt himself growing weaker as the blood pounded in his ears, the light dimmed in his vision and his breathing grew laboured. And all the while he couldn’t look away from those golden eyes.

The sword came down, their death coming with it, only for nothing to happen. The pressure disappeared, everything returned to normal minus one mountain top, and Zawisza gave them one final glance and some parting words before preparing to leave. Before he vanished, Oberon pulled himself together enough to notice the red crystal that was used to summon the diagram and managed to activate his Magic Analysis just before the knight shot upwards.

For the next few seconds everyone was silent, until Torrent turned on them. Someone had prayed to the Demon King, multiple people apparently, and he had sent that knight after them to send a message. Torrent was shifting colours, looking like she was ready to attack the first person who admitted fault as Ash threatened to torture the person responsible.

Well, if it isn’t either of them, it isn’t me and it isn’t Digbie, then that really narrows down the list of suspects.

“This isn’t helping. We shouldn’t turn on each other like this. No-one died. No-ones hurt, yet, and after what just happened NO ONE is going to try that again. Let’s just move on; we shouldn’t be trying to kill each other when there are enough things trying to kill us already.”

Arriving not long after the others did, practically right on the heels of Monica, Chris approached the woman with the clipboard as she was exiting the building and introduced himself. She marked something down on her notes after checking something and Chris wondered if she actually had a roster of everyone who signed up or just a headcount; probably the latter, since she didn't ask his name, though he really hoped that the CDA was smarter than to just let anyone with a gun into their base just because they answered 'yes' without a proper vetting process.

She ran her ID through the scanner and the door opened to allow them access. He followed her down the corridor to a reception area where some people were already waiting. While the woman filled out the relevant information, with some input from Chris where necessary, he took a closer look at the mercenaries he would be working with on this assignment. Both women, both heavily armed of course, one with a belt-fed machine gun that she was currently field stripping and the other with some kind of rifle he didn't recognise. He didn't recognise either of them either, but given his lone operator style of doing things he was more likely to recognise the Pale Horse mercs than his own side.

Finishing with the computer the woman with the clipboard turned back to him and held out a plastic lanyard for him to take. "Wear this at all times so the guards know your supposed to be here. Wait here with the others and we'll begin the briefing once the rest of the mercenaries arrive."

Taking the badge with a short 'thank you' Chris took a seat a few places down from the other mercenaries before leaning his head back and closing his eyes. Might as well try and get some rest while he waited.
