Power Mimicry: Calvin has the ability to copy up to five superpowers at a time. By being within fifteen feet of someone for about a minute, Calvin’s body can duplicate their superpower. However, this superpower will be at a much more weakened level than the original. Also, while possible, it’s harder for Calvin to copy the powers of non-mutants, requiring him to focus more on the person he is copying. Calvin is limited to five powers at a time, but through training he has learned how to consciously replace one specific power with another.

History

Born the son of Dr. Ronald Rankin, Calvin never knew his mother. Raised by a single father, Calvin had a rough childhood. While his father provided for him, he was distant and focused on his research. Formerly employed by both the American and Canadian government, Dr. Rankin was an expert on the X-Gene and how it manifested. But young Calvin knew nothing of this research, just knowing that his father was constantly locked away in his study.

This lack of contact with his father caused Mimic to run wild. He made some friends who were a bad influence on him, getting him into all kinds of trouble. Once Dr. Rankin began hearing about these incidents from the school, he got very angry with Calvin. The two would get into a heated argument, Calvin eventually walking away. But that didn’t finish it for Calvin, as he broke into his father’s study. He then proceeded to begin smashing everything in the study. This included a beaker filled with a mysterious liquid. When it hit the ground it released a red mist, which Calvin then breathed in, causing him to faint.

Calvin would wake up to the face of his father, who revealed that the mist was a chemical compound meant to activate the X-Gene. Following this incident, Calvin would become something of a test subject for Dr. Rankin, who kept running tests on him to see what the chemicals had done to his physiology. Eventually Calvin had enough and ran away from home.

Calvin would couch surf from friend to friend, never staying one place too long. He knew that his father couldn’t report him missing without Calvin revealing his experiments. To also keep the authorities out of the situation, Calvin kept attending school. It was there that he met Vera Cantor, a girl in his English class. Calvin began to pursue her romantically, only for Vera to reveal she had a boyfriend.

After this rejection, Calvin began repeatedly contacting Vera, still trying to start up a relationship. This prompted her boyfriend Hank McCoy, better known as Beast of the X-Men, to confront him. The argument turned violent, only for Calvin’s mutant ability to activate. He copied Hank’s mutant power and was able to fight him off. Later that day Calvin would be approached by the original five X-Men, who tried to reason with him. But then Calvin managed to copy the abilities of all five of them.

Using these new powers, Calvin escaped the X-Men. After this Calvin dropped out of school, and began a criminal career, taking the name Mimic. During this period, Calvin would occasionally fight the X-Men and copy other mutant abilities. This all came to a head when Calvin was fighting mutant. In the chaos of the battle, Calvin accidentally killed several onlookers.

Though it was an accident, Calvin felt terrible, falling into a deep depression. This was not helped by the news of the death of his father to a heart attack. It was in this lowest point that Calvin was approached by Charles Xavier, who offered him a place at his institute. Calvin decided to accept this opportunity, moving to the Xavier Institute.

It was there that Calvin finished his high school studies, before attending Metro College. He would also join the ranks of the X-Men. Initially Calvin would feel like an outsider as he used to be a villain, but he would soon find his place on the team. But this new found balance wouldn’t last long.

Calvin’s mind would be taken over by the psychic monster Onslaught’s mind. He and several other mutants would fight the X-Men, X-Force, and Avengers, being labeled terrorists. After the Onslaught crisis finished, Calvin and the other mutants that had been controlled were captured by the American government and placed in a secret prison.

After several months of beatings, Calvin managed to escape the prison, fleeing to the UK. While in exile in the foreign country, Calvin would meet Dr. Moira MacTaggert, starting up a long friendship. Moira would also diagnose Calvin with bipolar disorder, helping explain some of his actions in the past.

Calvin would briefly be a member of Excalibur, before deciding to return to America. There he would try and free all the mutants that had been imprisoned because of Onslaught’s actions, including Charles Xavier. To that end he would team up with Mystique’s Brotherhood of Mutants.

However, due to the lobbying of the Avengers, the mutants involved with Onslaught were pardoned, Calvin included. Still feeling bad about his other crimes, Calvin turned himself into the hands of the law. But he was not sent to prison, instead being made a member of the Thunderbolts, a team made of former villains.

Calvin would become a mainstay of the Thunderbolts, even when they were taken over by Norman Osborn, director of HAMMER. Calvin would be moved by Director Osborn into his own X-Men team, one loyal to HAMMER. While Calvin would befriend his teammate Weapon Omega, this would not be a good era for him as his mental health rapidly deteriorated.

After the disbanding of HAMMER, Calvin was pardoned of all of his crimes on the condition that he sought treatment. Upon completing said treatment, Calvin would return to the ranks of the X-Men. This would be around the period that they fought the Avengers over the Phoenix Force.

After that crisis, Calvin would be a revolving member of the X-Men, coming and going. He would also briefly be a member of the Avengers Unity Squad, a team meant to bring together mutants and other heroes. And Calvin would seek out his former teammate Weapon Omega, helping to get back to normalcy after the craziness of working for Osborn.

Now in a good place, things only got better for Calvin with the opening of the borders of Krakoa. Finally finding a place to belong, Calvin immediately moved to the island nation. Currently he is just a regular citizen as he feels that he has had enough craziness with teams for now. He has also found a mutant therapist on the island to help keep him on the right path.

Am I a Mutant or a Mutate?: While Calvin is getting into living in Krakoa, he questions if he really is a mutant. Was he born with his powers? Or did he get them from the chemicals in his father’s study?

Burned a lot of bridges: While Calvin is currently stable with his mental health, what would happen if he were confronted by the people he’s hurt or abandoned in the past?

■ 2000-2008 | A Strange Beginning
It was early in the year 2000, only a scant few months after the Y2K scare, that Mister and Missus Horowitz were expecting twins. While the anticipation of having their first kids together be born, there was also dread as tests revealed that the twins were conjoined at the head. Even with that knowledge, the Horowitz couple were ready for the birth. But when Mrs. Horowitz actually went into labor and was taken to the hospital, it was discovered that there was only one twin in her womb. The other twin had simply vanished.

The shock of this revelation was quickly replaced by joy as Mrs. Horowitz gave birth to a healthy baby boy. In honor of the missing twin, the remaining child was named Thom, which means twin. As Thom developed as a child and learned to speak, his parents made a conscious decision to not tell him about his disappearing twin brother. Thom had a normal childhood growing up in the suburbs of southern Ontario in Canada. He grasped whatever lesson he was being taught in school, made a close group of friends, and found himself to be a fast runner when playing games. He also got along with his parents and attended the local Synagogue regularly.

But as Thom’s mental faculties developed, he began to notice that he was different from others in his community in several ways. For one thing, he was interested in stuff that would be considered boy activities as well as stuff considered feminine. Some vicious bullying would quickly end any exploration of that part of Thom’s identity. But what was even harder for Thom was when he began hearing phantom voices.

Initially terrified by these ethereal whispering, Thom did think of the possibility that this was God talking to him. He then thought of asking his Rabbi about it, but the voice returned, advising Thom to keep it a secret. The voice stated that it was part of Thom and that it was just protecting him. So Thom kept his mouth shut, burying all the feelings related to it inside of himself.

■ 2008-2011 | Growing Pains
Thom keeping secret the person inside of him began to take a toll. Thom began to withdraw socially, losing many friends in the process. His parents would eventually notice and take him to his pediatrician who would then refer Thom for counseling. Thom would do his best to appear alright, never daring to mention the voice as he didn’t want to seem crazy. This would become routine for Thom for several months, that routine only shaken up by the news of his mother’s pregnancy.

The prospect of having a sibling managed to lift Thom’s spirits some, helping him rebound slightly in his interactions with others. It was in mid 2009 that Samantha Horowitz would be born. Thom immediately took to being an older brother, doing everything he could to help and protect her. Oddly enough, his phantom voice offered pointers.

Things were looking up for Thom. He moved to a new town for a fresh start, attended a new school where he made fast friends, and had a good relationship with his family. As Thom got older and began going up the grade levels, he found that he was naturally drawn to history. Thom loved the ancient myths of gods and heroes, and even the more modern myths like Captain America of WWII.

It was on a bike ride to the local library to grab a history book that Thom’s powers first manifested. As Thom took a path through a wooded area as a shortcut, a great pain overtook him. Falling off his bike, Thom convulsed on the trail. Then a blue light exited Thom’s body, taking the form of some kind of energy humanoid. It then began to speak, Thom recognizing the voice as that of the one in his head.

Though frightened, Thom began to speak with the being. The energy person then revealed that he was his brother in the womb, but somehow he was turned into energy and absorbed by Thom. Since then he’s existed in Thom’s brain, his mind growing alongside Thom’s. It took a lot of effort for the energy twin to speak telepathically, so that’s why he only talked occasionally.

Thom then began to feel unwell. The energy twin noticed this and deduced that there would be some kind of strain if they remained separated too long. So the energy twin reunited with Thom’s body. Following this experience, Thom immediately returned home and crashed on his bed, sleeping all the way to the next morning.

■ 2012-2013 | Hero Worship
Thom would speak with the energy twin many more times, both telepathically and in-person. Deciding that the energy twin needed a name, Thom picked the name Ezra, which mean help, as the energy twin had always been helping him. During the times where they were separated, Ezra would begin to experiment with his powers. The energy being found that he could fly, shoot energy blasts, and change shape. But still he could only be separated from Thom for only a few minutes before Thom began to suffer physically.

Thom and Ezra would then discuss if there was anyone else out there with powers like theirs. It was around this time that the explosion of superheroes happened. Suddenly heroes like Iron Man were on the scene, with more joining his team the Avengers, including a returning Captain America.

Other teams would pop up as well, but Thom’s favorite would be Alpha Flight. An all-Canadian hero team, Alpha Flight was based out of Toronto, not too far from where Thom lived. Thom would begin to watch any and all clips of Alpha Flight that were online, dreaming of becoming a part of their team.

Thom would begin to model his behavior on the various members of Alpha Flight. He took the courage and truth seeking of the Guardian, the cool head of the Shaman, but it was his favorite member, Northstar, who would have the biggest impact on the young Thom. As Thom began puberty he found that he was noticing girls, but also boys as well. This confused the young man, until he saw Northstar come out as gay on national television.

Thanks to this acknowledgment of the superhero, Thom would come to realize that he was bisexual. Thom decided to keep his family in the dark about his sexuality. Instead life went ahead. It was then time for Thom’s Bar Mitzvah. With his whole family present Thom completed the ceremony to officially be considered a man. But then someone threw a brick through the window of the Synagogue, an anti-semitic slur written on it.

The shock of this incident inadvertently caused Ezra to manifest out of Thom. The assembled family and Rabbi were freaked out by the appearance of the energy being, who returned to Thom in a matter of a few seconds. Thom would be rushed home where he revealed everything about him and Ezra to them.

■ 2014-2018 | A Change of Scenery
Unsure of how to move forward, Thom’s parents decided that he should spend some time away from home, until the whole event blew over. So Thom was sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle in Toronto. While Thom was sad to have to leave home, he was excited to be moving to the big city.

Thom’s Aunt and Uncle accepted him and Ezra immediately, their parents having fully informed them of what was going on. It was Thom’s Aunt who first suggested that he and Ezra were mutants, a term Thom had only heard whispers about. They also supported Thom and Ezra’s training, as they always tried to push the separation further, even if it was only a few seconds more.

Now attending high school in Toronto, Thom quickly took the track team and excelled in history class. Thom would also decided to become in French, taking it all throughout high school. He would also start to date, initially girls, but then he met a boy named Arthur. Neither of them had dated a guy before, but they clicked and started a relationship. It was during this time that Ezra revealed that he is straight.

Thom would finish high school on the honor roll and would be accepted to the University of Toronto. He would then break up with Arthur who moved to America to attend post-secondary, as they both thought a long distance relationship wouldn’t last.

Thom would return home to his parents that summer, reuniting now with his little sister. As they caught up, Samantha revealed that she too had powers. Thom then told her about mutants. They then both decided to keep her powers a secret. After this Thom began university in the fall.

■ 2019-2022 | The Truths of being an Adult
Now an adult, living at his university’s dorm, Thom decided to act on his wish of joining Alpha Flight. Creating a makeshift costume, Thom waited for Alpha Flight to show up in Toronto. After a few months of waiting, Thom would get his chance. Aliens known as the Plodex had been secretly living underneath Lake Ontario, and were now attacking the city.

Thom and Ezra rushed to fight them, firing energy blasts at the aliens. But one blast missed and hit a street lamp, causing it to crash onto the car of a fleeing citizen. While they weren’t killed, they were seriously harmed. Thom was then given a stern talking down to by Guardian, the leader of Alpha Flight.

After this incident, Thom threw away his crime fighting outfit. Instead he focused on school. For four years he worked on his studies, eventually getting a bachelor’s degree in history. It was around this time that the news of Alpha Flight being disbanded began to circulate. Thom was unsure of how to feel about this.

Thom would then decided to not immediately go for his master’s degree, instead taking a semester to live in Paris, as to help with his French language skills. It was while living in a mirco apartment that he received an invitation to attend the Istituto Nova per Giovani Eccezionali. Reminded of his dreams of being a superhero, Thom decided to accept the invitation and study at the mysterious Italian academy.

Since shortly before his birth, Thom has been sharing a body with his twin brother Ezra. Ezra is an energy being who exists inside Thom’s brain. They are able to communicate telepathically while in this combined state.

Thom’s brother Ezra is comprised of energy and can detach himself from Thom’s body. While separated Ezra can speak, fly, fire blasts of heated energy, and alter his form slightly. After a set amount of time, currently a few minutes, Thom begins to feel unwell and could pass out if Ezra does not recombine with him. It is currently unknown if Thom can die due to the separation.

So here is a description for Thom, as Logan Lerman can’t be used: Thom is of average height. He has pale skin that is only blemished by a birthmark on his right arm. His eyes are freshwater blue in color, while his hair is a curly dark brown. While born in Canada, his heritage is German-Jewish.

Hopefully that’s enough to generate a good image. Once I have that image, I’ll update my character sheet with the new image and alias.

Again I'm cool with Zeta era or really anything else as a setting. The only setting I would outright say no to would be that one series where they fought by using Gunpla model kits. Didn't really care for that one.

The Justice Society

If anyone is needing ideas for secondary characters, here's some recommendations.

- Citizen Steel: Grandson of a cyborg WWII hero. He gained powers by a super powered Nazi barfing metal onto him.
- Black Condor: There's two modern versions of him. One is a guy who flies with wings and telekinesis. The other is empowered by the Gods.
- Maxine Hunkel: A girl with air control powers after being injected by nanites. I believe she is supposed to be in the Black Adam film.
- Uncle Sam: The living embodiment of the United States of America. Could play him as a goofy character or something more serious. I think it would work either way.

The Mutants

It's cool that I can use Alpha Flight. As for similarities between our characters, I've decided to change it that my character doesn't go unconscious. Instead he remains conscious, but the longer he is separated from his energy twin his body begins to stop functioning. So if they remained separate long enough the physical twin would die.

Anyways I'm going to start working on a character sheet. Expect it in the next couple of days.
