About me

Hi! MrSkimobile here. I've been RP'ing and occasionally GM'ing for close to a decade now.
I like RP's that are on the Casual+/Tabletop side, that are preferably original settings. No genre preferences.
This thread holds the full archive of my antics on this site.
Always feel free to contact me. See you around!

Fate: Accelerated (Play-By-Post) Edition

@Srpv IF we use the Fate (Accelerated) system, yes. I'll leave that to the boss, and/or player preference. (if there's anyway to add a poll on this site, let me know)

Then we have 2 options: either the players can roll for themselves, or we could interpret and roll everything in the background so the players only need to concern themselves with the results, and what they actually want to do in-character. We could even try a combo if only some players want to go full tabletop, and other don't. It's not super difficult, though, and, again, if we use it I'm more than happy to help everyone out.

The only meh thing is that this site's dice roller doesn't support the specific kinds of dice the system uses. I know there's a Fate roller bot on Discord we could use, but again, that could be a constraint on the players that not everyone might want.
@Red Wizard

Well, will you look at that, a handy dandy guide (with a one-page summary of the system even!) ;)

The Fate system is quite simple, generic and flexible. This makes it a powerful system, but it can be a bit difficult when first starting out with it. It has to 'click', and key to that is its Golden Rule (see down at the bottom).

(holy -hopefully dummy-proof- wall of text batman!)

In short, Characters in Fate have:
- Approaches: stats, but generic (this char is good at 'Sneaky' things; depending on char, could be backstabbing, hacking, illusions, etc.)
- Aspects: short phrases describing important things about a character (their one-liner summary, obstacles and flaws, desires, etc.)
- Stunts: abilities, items, traits that make them truly special. There are no pre-defined feats or spells, but are defined by the player+GM.

When GM offers a challenge (could be a battle, or solving a puzzle), they set a difficulty. A player rolls 4 Fate dice (with only +, - and blank sides), and to their sum they add the used Approach bonus. Depending on the Outcome (Fail, Tie, Success, Success with Style), this can cost the player or give benefits, and sometimes (depending on which Action a player takes) there are multiple options you can choose from.

Players in addition get a pool of Fate Points (FP) that they can use on Aspects or Stunts:
- Invoke Aspects: invoking aspects grants a player a re-roll, or +2 bonus on a roll. They do have to narratively explain why.
- Use Stunts: stunts can create special effects (set the room on fire by creating an 'on fire' aspect, e.g.), or give bonuses on rolls.
- Compel Aspects: GM/Players can also use an Aspect to 'tempt' a character into a situation (by gifting 1 FP), but can be denied for 1 FP.

Because Fate Points are limited, characters can't just spam their wow-amazing abilities all the time. They will also have to do things that are sub-optimal or not always get their way in order to get FP back (maybe they lose an argument, retreat from a battle, or they get tempted into doing something which complicates things). So in the best Fate games, you get this balance between awesomeness and 'oh shit'-moments. It is important for players to know this up-front: you will not always get your way, and you will sometimes have to roll with it - that makes it fun!

And that's about it. There are some other things like how to deal with damage, and how character development works. But that's for later.

Gameplay example: a party is trying to get into a castle occupied by goblins. Their rogue has the aspect 'I hate goblins, they killed my family'! And the party has compelled this aspect to tempt them into attacking the camp instead of sneaking by it. The player accepted and the rogue is now trying to attach a rope ladder somewhere. In Fate terms, this action could be an 'Overcome' action, as it would try to overcome the 'Darn Wall!' aspect in the scene. GM sets its Difficulty to 0 (reasonably easy). The rogue has verrry bad luck and rolls a -4. Their Sneaky approach is +3, making the roll's total a -1, so they Fail. They don't have any Fate Points left (they will only get the reward for the compel after this scene), else they could have used 1 FP to Invoke their 'Acrobatic Ninja' Aspect to gain another +2 bonus, but at least they can choose to Succeed at a Major Cost. So the ladder still gets attached, but the guards are alerted. Oh no! How will the party get out of this one!?

IT IS MOST IMPORTANT to note that the system is narrative-first. The Golden Rule that is foundational to the whole Fate system is that the story comes first, and the rules only really serve to support it. The rules are basically guidelines on how tension and ups and downs can be created in a story. And you can be as spammy or sparse with them as you like, and can overrule them as you like. For this reason, it is also very dependent on a solid back-and-forth between players and GM, as players have quite a lot of agency and control over the worldbuilding, story and how the rules are interpreted.

So yeah, I really like the system, and if you do choose to go ahead with it, I'll be more than happy to Co-GM.
Reporting in, as always :) Might repurpose a character idea from a past IC for this if it gets enough interest. As for system, I'm always a sucker for TT elements, but I get why not everyone might be into that.
@Raineh Daze Makes me think of these weirdly cute lil dorks a bit.
OK fine! I've done the interview questions as well, #peerpressure; see here
@Thayr lol chipmunks xD I have made many typo's writing Alvis' name, and everytime that was exactly what I had to think about as well.

As the door opened into the empty, echoing hall, Alvis saw two figures already in conversation. Alvis adjusted his jacket a bit. Even after so many years, he would feel some hesitation in situations he didn’t foresee. Then the quiet of the hall was pierced by someone calling his name, a well-known Hufflepuff welcome he hadn’t heard in a long time, and a familiar warmth filled him. He raised his hand in a stiff wave as he joined them.

”Well, you know me, with my impeccable timing.” Alvis answered Liam as he shook his and Miles' hands, tapping the side of his head with pretend seriousness. There was an old joke among students on Alvis' strange sense of punctuality -usually late, rarely early, but when he was, something strange would usually go down. ”It’s good to see you two again, in one piece and all.” He nodded.

”Got called in for Divination, yes. Seems almost like yesterday since I joined the Aurors, but Hogwarts does seem to have a way of pulling you back in… I do wonder how long it’ll be before I have to start solving the Case of the Missing Homework here, or the Case of the Exploding Potions Classroom for that matter…”

Alvis took a seat near them, settling in, knowing it was where they were supposed to be, even if the reasons were still unclear. “Is the castle being redesigned?” He muttered. His gaze lingered on the room, as if expecting something -or someone- else to join them. Someone with a lot on their mind.
@Thayr yes, I imagine that's where the food's at, yes ;)
just saying my char would probably take a little semi-absentminded detour for old time's sake, see if those scratches they made on the underside of the table in 3rd year would still be there, that kind of thing. just so you don't imagine him waltzing straight towards the soup bowl or something.
@Thayr epic prophecy rap battle anyone? :p

Also not sure where my character would've gone tbh. I was waiting a bit for other players to join. But probably just to where the food was at. Maybe walk past Ravenclaw table for some nostalgia

And what can I say. Foolish things make the best stories lol

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Headmaster: Minerva McGonagall
(Order of Merlin, First Class, International Confed. of Wizards, Supr. Cmdr. of the Staffroom Biscuit Tin)

Dear Mr. Alvis J. Hawes,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been awarded the Professorship of Divination at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I suspect you already knew of this, being a Seer, but nonetheless, consider this your official confirmation and congratulations.

Please arrive at Hogwarts no later than August 14th to prepare your classroom and syllabus. Note that Prof. Trelawney left us an impressive collection of crystal balls and crockery, though a duster may come in handy. As is tradition, a soirée with evening walk will be held at the Three Broomsticks before the start of the school year. We look forward to seeing you once again.

Yours sincerely,

Minerva McGonagall
Headmistress

Alvis' letter had come, finally. For the past few days the Auror's office had been abuzz with rumours and gossip. With each passing day Alvis' room became ever more... clean. He packed suitcases. He started gifting away his quills with foreboding comments. The office's cobweb of magical thought-streams connecting various suspects and unfortunates started shifting more slowly than usual. Even Mopsy, his occasional assistant house-elf, was getting worried when he was tasked with boxing Alvis' mementos - from the ominous prophecy book (Case of the Future Faker, "I break it open when I'm in a bad mood, hilarious!"), to his bird (Case of the Cursed Quetzal), quizzically looking at him as the box closed around it. Then one day, Alvis opened up one of the office windows, sat himself to face it, and poured himself a nice cup of tea. Three cups of Lady Grey later, and the letter came flying in. And despite Alvis' best efforts to avoid it as he dreamed it would happen, the letter valiantly flopped itself straight into Alvis' face.

"Well that certainly clears things up." The boss said as he saw the wax seal of Hogwarts gracing the envelope. "Running off to a cozy little school placement are we?" Rumours of the restructuring of Hogwarts had spread throughout the Ministry of Magic, and even beyond. Alvis had applied soon after having heard the call for new teachers. "One goes where one's needed. Fate doesn't always allow you to have a say in the matter." Alvis responded. "You know I don't believe that, son. You always have a choice." His boss replied, his gaze aimed straight at Alvis, who sighed ever so slightly. "It's been quite a while now. And having to face the darkest of magics all the time, it's... I haven't been sleeping very well lately. So I've been thinking it might be time to try out something new. Not all mysteries lie in crime, boss." His former-boss nodded. "Then we are sad to see you go." A pat on the shoulder marked the end of the conversation. He always did have a curt nature.

Alvis had waited in line for the Ministry's floo network for too long for his liking. His ticket was genuine, but apparently one doesn't simply travel to Hogwarts. Some calls back and forth ensued, and Hogsmeade was the next best thing they could do. Green fire engulfed him. He sneezed. And then he lost some of his baggage, typical! Then a carriage from Hogsmeade took him to the castle, where he unloaded his modest collection of personal belongings, lugged it all the way up the north tower's spiral staircase to the Divination classroom and his new office -he forgot how many steps there were... he should've planned for this! Then, as he started unpacking, a squeaky voice from behind him startled him. For all his foresight, it sometimes still amazed him how even the most humble of things could surprise him like that.

"Excuse me, sir. Lunch is served at the..."

"Great hall. I'll be right down, thanks."

Being back at Hogwarts was strange. Alvis was used to the halls bustling with students. But now, going alone, it was different. A hint of heartache came over him. There wouldn't be his old schoolmates waiting for him anymore. It would be a new start. The doors to the great hall opened. And as he entered, he muttered to no one in particular.

Where feasts are served and goblets clink, there friendships spark with nod and wink...
