Name: Gwyneth Emma King
Goes by ‘Gwen’
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Appearance: Gwen’s a small chick. Small bones, small body, small everything. She reaches about 5'3ft if she stretches for it. She sports a small bob cut, longer in front, shorter in back. Her hair is naturally pale, but she's dyed a black strip on the left side of her head, and the lower half towards the rear has all been tar’d up.
Down from that would be her dark blue eyes. Or eye. Left eye, to be precise. Her right eye has a deep ‘X-shaped’ starting from the midpoint between her eyebrow and the eye itself, and ending about at her cheekbone. While the scar is rather old by this point, it still has a bit of a redness to it. Due to a damaged nerve, she is unable to open her right eye. Her vision in that eye is severely damaged anyway, so whatever.
She has a slender frame and thin limbs. If she’s out in public, she’ll usually be seen wearing a simple band-tee. If it’s cold, she’ll even add her pikachu hoodie, but not without mumbled complaints. And she almost always wears some kind of baggy jeans and tennis shoes.
Gwen is an amputee. Her left leg was amputated above the knee. Several deep scars remain from her accident. She uses a rather durable prosthetic to walk/bike/hike. She’s become quite adept at it over the years, and can walk rather naturally with it, though a close observer can still see she favors one leg over the other.
Personality: Gwen is a strong, fiercely independent woman and a creature of impulse. She does what she wants, when she wants. If you like it, rad. If not? Well, sucks to suck. She despises pity and will gladly say so. She can come across as rather loud and abrasive but…
Well, no, there is no but. She will speak her mind on anything and everything if given the chance. Or even if she has to take the chance by force. She’s really not that picky in that scenario. That being said, she’s not one to actively incite conflict. She just won’t go out of her way to avoid it. Never been a shy kid, that much is for sure. Tyranny, however, pisses her off something fierce. It’s like Authority, something else she’s not fond of, but worse.
Stubborn. About as stubborn as a goddamn mule. With a mouth so filthy that she’d make a sailor blush to boot. Be in a good spirit for Arceus’ sake. She has a bit of a mischievous streak to her, and is likely to make quips about others. The girl likes to laugh. And she likes to make others laugh. So she does what she does. She’s not about to pull punches on someone or avoid something she finds particularly funny. It’s just not in her nature.
Gwen’s not exactly a goody goody. She’s not above lying, cheating, or stealing. Hell, she’d do any of the above just for the hell of it. But when there’s something she wants on the line? She gets it. By any means necessary.
She’s not incredibly quick to trust people, and when when she does, she still keeps them at arm's length. Friends are cool and all, but friends are still people, and people suck.
History: She fell from the sky, and sank into the sea. Surely she’d have died, were it not for he. Gwen remembers little from her early years. The earliest she can recall is not from her own memory, but from her father, Big Papa Earl King’s own little story. He was the captain aboard a shipping vessel, heading from Sinnoh to Unova. It was a trip he had made countless times before and countless times after. But this one time had different, had been special.
On a day much like any other, Earl went about his duties. It promised to be a dull afternoon, even in spite of the wind picking up.
But the confused murmuring of his crew had stirred him from that delusion. The rowdy crew wasn’t so rowdy. Their lively jabs at each other had vanished. And Earl soon found out why.
“Is that a kid?!”
Somebody yelled, pointing toward the sky. Ridiculous, but Earl searched nonetheless. So imagine his shock when he saw a little girl, she couldn’t be a day over three years old if that, falling. She was going to hit the water and sink like a bunch of bricks. So Earl peeled off his shirt and cap and dove into the water, swimming out to where she would land. As luck would have it, he wasn’t the only with that idea. A member of his crew, a Mr. Garfield, had hit the water right as he did, and the two men quickly broke water.
The little girl did hit the water. Hard. And she did go under. Deep.
But the two men were there, and they quickly retrieved her and swam her back to the ship.
Once safe and dry, the Captain tried to get any kind of information from the girl, but mostly failed. He got her name from her though. Gwyneth, according to a tag inside of her tiny jacket.
Unwilling to just abandon the child, and not wanting to force the child onto any of his men, the Captain took the girl in as one of his own. His wife had passed without leaving him a child. It felt like fate.
And so the girl lived with the Captain. The Captain lived in Unova, more specifically, in Castelia City, and so did the girl.
Life went about as normal as it could have for the two. Gwen in the early years would join the Captain on the boat when he sailed off, but as she grew older, simply stayed by herself at the homestead. It was during one of these times that the little girl had her damned accident.
She was waiting for the train. She had to go somewhere, though that somewhere has been lost to her, as are most details surrounding the accident. But one thing remains true: While Gwyneth Emma King was waiting for a train on a pleasant Friday morning, someone pushed the girl off the platform. Be it accidental or malicious, the fact remains that she had ended up on the tracks with a POWERFUL locomotive sprinting full speed right at her. She had injured her leg on the fall and couldn’t get back up. She crawled from the tracks, trying to get to the platform, to pull herself up, but she wasn’t quick enough.
The train barreled past her.
And rather than taking her ticket, it took her left leg.
The girl lived a life about as normal as one could expect from then on. She lived in a wheelchair for a while, but Earl managed to get a prosthetic built for her, and Gwen gave it her all to learn to walk again. She just didn’t waste her life sitting if she could help it.
Turns out she could.
About her tenth birthday, Earl King went out on his last voyage. The ship hit some rough waters and sunk. Earl didn’t survive. Gwen decided that she would. She lived off what she could for a while, but soon was forced to hit the streets. She lied, cheated, and stole to provide for herself. She would survive. She was homeless and hungry at times, but as she applied her trade, some nights she could afford to live a bit more on the good side of the tracks.
This went on for a while. Months. And then the past came strolling up to her one night.
Mr. Garfield.
He had heard of the terrible tragedy that had befallen his old captain, yet when he asked of the girl, he got no answer. So he went out, searching. And now here he was. He had finally found her. Unwilling to see her just die on the streets, Garfield offered to take her in. She took up his offer in tears.
That’s how she ended up a member of the Garfield homestead. The girl cleaned up, got settled in, and eventually ended up enrolled in the Pokemon Academy.
But now her time has come. Will Gwen have what it takes to conquer the Pokemon League Challenge? Or will she simply fade away into history?
