Kayliss Lambert

Finally. She was in her element. Infiltrating an enemy camp was familiar territory for Kayliss, and she made the approach with ease, sneaking up under cover of darkness. Judging by the sounds coming from the middle of the camp, the warriors within were drinking. Not uncommon for sellswords. It certainly made her own work easier, considering the noise was enough to be distracting to what few sentries were on duty.

The Crownsblade ghosted past one such pair, electing to leave them alive for now. She didn't know what their shift schedules were like, and eliminating two men that wouldn't be relevant to her mission further in was too much of a risk, especially if someone decided to check in on the guard. It was too bad that sourcing a disguise here like with the cultists wouldn't be practical. Some wore face coverings, but the majority were male, and their outfits weren't enough to conceal her gender among them. Not to mention the time and risk it would take to don a disguise in the midst of enemy territory. So she'd have to rely on physical stealth rather than social.

Kayliss skulked around the tents with a light step, one dagger drawn in her off-hand as she weaved her way towards the enclosure. She wasn't too far from the horses-

A drunken Morahti stumbled into her peripheral vision, and she quickly ducked back behind the side of a tent. A quick glance to the left. To the right. No other guards in sight. While the sentries could be ignored, a roaming guard would be too inconvenient to leave alone. Kayliss surged forward, taking the man from the side. Her dominant hand reached for the back of his neck and slammed him down to the ground, the dagger in her left hand plunging down shortly after into the side of his neck. Problem solved. She'd have to move quicker now, though. There was no telling when someone would notice a missing friend. The assassin tucked the fresh corpse in between a tent and some supply crates, just out of sight. No time for any further concealment.

Several silent dashes from tent to tent later, Kayliss found herself crouched down at the gate of the horse enclosure, picking the padlock on it. Click. Click. Click. Her pick found the right position on the last pin, and the tumbler popped open. She stood up and swung the gate wide open. Hopefully, Roger and Shortclaw would notice soon. And even if they didn't...

Kayliss picked up a rock on the ground and lobbed it at the head of a horse squarely in the middle of the herd, ghosting away in the direction of the tents shortly after. Her primary objective was complete. The rest was up to the remainder of the banner. As for her, there was still a secondary mission: locating the prisoners, if at all possible. Her dagger back in her hand, Kayliss began checking through tents, trying to pinpoint which held the captives.
Ranbu no Izayoi

She held no strong feelings about cities in general, having spent half her career as Lord Kaien's retainer in Kugane, but Midgar was easily the most repulsive one she'd ever been to. For as much as Izayoi could say against the entire realm of Edren, at least Balmung was rather aesthetic. Midgar was repulsive and stank of smoke. The stench hadn't quite kicked on on their approach, as absorbed in memories of the past as she was, but now? Izayoi wrinkled her nose, following after the rest of the group as they decided to take shelter in some coffee shop.

Izayoi wasn't necessarily opposed to taking a day or two within the city. As much as she wished to rush to Osprey at all speed, they still had to resupply and prepare for the journey ahead. Any more than that would be needless delay. In the meantime...

She was fairly certain she'd never had coffee before. The smell as they entered the shop was certainly unfamiliar, though it was far more preferable to the smoke and stench outside. Given that she'd spent her entire life in Osprey, tea had been her obvious drink of choice. Her master had preferred black tea when available, claiming it was one of the only things he enjoyed from his homeland, whereever that had been. In truth, she'd picked up a taste for the same as well in her youth. A shame few tea shops in Kugane even carried black teas.

Fortunate that they had the son of the city's lord in their party. Every little bit mattered when it came to scrimping on gil, and she'd not turn her nose at receiving something for free. Although the menus were...confusing. Whatever these coffee drinks were, they were listed off in names she'd never heard of before. What in the mothercrystal's name was a cappuccino? Furrowing her brow, Izayoi sidled next to Eliane, briefly murmuring to her.

"You enjoy these drinks, correct? I've not partaken of coffee before, and I recognize very little of these menus. Would you have any suggestions in particular?"

"Would you stop laughing already?" Renar groused at Fionn as they both dismounted on arrival at Cae Mayl, the bastard having gotten no small amount of mockery from his friend for his misunderstanding regarding Alette. "How was I to know that was what passes for concern with you? You certainly don't do the same with the rest of us."

Unlike some of their number, a hard day's ride left Renar still able to fight. He'd trained to be a knight practically since his father, may he burn, took custody of him, and it was all but expected of a Brias warrior. By no means was he fresh as a daisy, but if it came down to a fight, he would be more than ready.

Dame Tyaethe's remarks were at least somewhat helpful. The shrine itself being untouched was better than the alternative. Though anyone even halfway intelligent wouldn't have bothered to taint it if they wanted to conceal their presence here. That meant it still came down to a search.

"Come on then, Fionn. Let's be about this. Perhaps we may even get to actually perform our role this time."

Salvator Rasch

Void damned insurgent fighters. At least whoever was contacting them wasn't shooting yet. Small mercies. Of course, their contact's promise of secure comms wasn't worth shit now. This was just shaping up to be one of those days.

He'd be more pissed about the human girl causing problems again if it truly was her fault this time. Of course, Salvator couldn't exactly blame the voice on the channel. In an insurgent shitfest like this, with factions sending deniable black ops every which way, of course the fog of war was muddied enough that no one could trust one another. Of course, that didn't stop this situation from being supremely annoying.

"We're not League-affiliated." Salvator keyed his comms, scowling beneath his faceplate as he tried to trace back the warning shot and get a bead on whoever fired it. "Don't know where our squadmate got the kit, first job together. But you're not going to believe us on just that." He said flatly, his newfound shotgun leveled in the direction of the woods.

"Let's make this quick, we're on a timetable. Squad's on assignment to help the locals. If you don't have a problem with that, what do we have to do or say for everyone involved to stand down so we can move on our objective?" With that said, Rasch stopped transmitting on comms for the moment, speaking out loud so that most of the squad in his vicinity could hear him.

"Would rather get out of this without wasting ammo if we can. Stay in cover, let's try not to shoot first if we can help it." If anyone had a problem with him giving orders at this point, well, that was their problem for not displaying enough initiative to do so already.
Kayliss Lambert

"...Spooky?" Kayliss raised an eyebrow at Urden, her expression not betraying anything more. If she were honest with herself, she didn't quite know how she felt about having such a nickname. Something like that hadn't come up since she was a child, and those memories were faint by now. After a moment's deliberation, Kayliss internally decided to just let it slide. There were worse things the mercenary could have called her.

Fortunately, it seemed the commander knew who exactly they were up against. While Kayliss had only heard of the Morathi in passing, that hadn't been enough to give her an overview of their ways until Velvetica brought it up. Slavers, then. Feh. The practice was abhorrent in theory. In practice? An assassin didn't quite have the leeway to make moral judgements on their own. So she barely reacted to the mention, only turning to the others once she'd heard mention of acid.

"Take care not to accidentally splash yourself." She remarked blandly in Cadmon's direction. "Purchase some for my own use, and I'll show you how to apply the substance to your weapons correctly."

Finally, a damned lead to go on. And about time, at that. The Iron Rose were the swords of the crown, not magical investigators or fix-all handymen. Frankly, it was fortunate that the mercenaries were present at all. The presence of the mage alone paid dividends in terms of results from all of this. Renar doubted the knights would have gotten quite so far in as short of a time without her aid. But it served little to dwell on what-ifs.

Cae Mayl, then. "A day's ride away." Renar commented as he followed after the Knight-Captain, his voice carrying. "Half if we run our horses to the brink of death." He stepped over a corpse in the way, not sparing it a second glance. "But judging by how long ago this happened, it's doubtful we'll actually find the perpetrator there. Only a fool would even remain in the country at this point, and they've at least a few days' lead on us by now. At best, we'll hopefully find another clue similar to this one." His gaze shifted in Fanilly's direction.

"Orders, Knight-Captain? Are we to regroup and pursue with all haste? And will our present company be joining us?" An incline of his helmet towards Alette. As much as he'd prefer to not be constantly on guard against them at this point, one couldn't deny their usefulness. Mostly the mage. Of course, that was presuming they were even willing to accompany the Iron Rose any further. He could hardly blame them if they decided to simply return to their employer, now that their curiosity over this whole situation was answered. Doing so would be the smart option, at least.

From her position shadowing the commander, Kayliss glanced over towards the trio of Urden, Cadmon, and Lirrah with mild curiosity as they found and discussed some coinage they'd found. Fortunately, they were close enough that she didn't have to try very hard to listen in on the conversation. Finally, a clue. At least the merchant knew her coin. Red armor and braided hair rang some sort of bell within her head, but Kayliss wasn't quite familiar enough with the subjects in question that she could remember off the top of her head. Best to see if either of the other two knew anything.

While the others looked over the coinage, Kayliss ghosted behind them, not revealing her presence until she was just behind Cadmon.

"Braided easterners? I don't suppose either of you would be more familiar with such? I believe I've seen such travelers in the capital before, but it's been years." Kayliss said simply, entirely intent on alarming someone with her sudden appearance. Why? She had to get her entertainment somewhere, after all.

"This gets us somewhere, at least. It shan't be too hard to track down a group so distinctive if they're still within our search radius. That griffin rider isn't back yet, so you've time yet to take this to the commander." She advised briefly before turning and starting to head back over in that direction herself.

Renar Hagen

Renar had no reason to look at the back of his cloak for the moment, and so he didn't. He did, however, feel that something was off. Though being prepared for betrayal on a moment's notice did tend to do things to one's sixth sense.

That all said, Alette's explanation was...curious. He had little doubt that she was telling him the truth, lying about the matter would be nonsensical when he could just get Fionn's side of the story later. Moreover, she seemed too genuinely amused for him to have not been off the mark.

"The mother hen routine, then?" Renar remarked easily to Alette as he continued walking a pace behind her and to the side. "I'm not unfamiliar with it from him by any means. Though it doesn't quite come across the same when he does it to the rest of us. All he does when that happens is moralize at me, not try to bite my head off. It was rather different when it happened to you."

Renar shifted his cloak, and a string of color caught his eye. What...? Dunce? He narrowed his eyes from behind the visor of his full helm, bringing a hand up to...pass through the lettering. Well. That narrowed the list of culprits down significantly. Seemed their newest recruit had some measure of backbone after all, if she decided to retaliate, even if indirectly. Nonetheless, he scoffed at the choice of method, removing his mantle and turning it inside out before wrapping it around himself once again so that the DUNCE lettering was concealed behind his armor now.

With that done, he resumed following after wherever the mercenary captain was going. Someone among the knights had to keep her within their sight.
