Natsumi Fujikawa

From the air, Natsumi could glimpse inside the partially-constructed building to some extent, but not well enough to spot the Emergence Gate, which must’ve been inside of it based on Shiro’s estimate. At least she could clearly see the surrounding area from here. “I see no demons or civilians outside of the central building,” she said into her ear piece, broadcasting to her allies. Wait, did the new recruits receive ear pieces before they came here? She hoped so.

She had no more time to dwell on that before she witnessed several demons charging forth while the foreign recruit strode ahead to meet them. Oh no. They were only Beast-class, but even so she could already imagine the brutes pouncing on the poor woman and tearing her to shreds. What could she do? Should she carpet bomb the demons with her fire before they reached her? At the speed they were moving, that seemed far too likely to cause collateral damage. Before Natsumi could make a decision, the combatants already made contact, and it was… completely fine, actually. Huh. Clearly she wasn’t exaggerating when she said she had fought demons before.

From this angle, Natsumi couldn’t tell how many more demons would emerge from that hallway, but it seemed like the ground team was handling it. She could regroup with them and push towards the gate all together, but she didn’t like the prospect of potentially getting surrounded in a confined space. She looked to Kaida at her side. “Let’s find a way in from above and flank whatever else is in there.” Trusting that Kaida wouldn’t disagree with getting closer to the action, she didn’t wait for a response and flew down to the unfinished roof. Even if the gate was on the ground floor, a shell of a building like this would have enough exposed stairs or entirely missing floors to quickly make their way down.

Natsumi passed through the Denial Field alongside Akira, then sighed when Andrea charged off on her own. She always did that, on the few occasions where her deployment was approved. Sure, she stood little risk of getting killed out there, so in that way it made sense. But it also meant that the chaos of combat would probably already be happening by the time they got there, which meant a less cleanly-coordinated engagement. As much as she would like to stick around and discuss a plan, the longer they waited the higher the chance that the Beasts would be scattered all over the place looking for a way out of the Denial Field. So she’d best get on with it and do her usual job.

She clapped her hands twice, then performed a polite bow. It was a shortened version of a Shinto prayer that she had found through experimentation would still work. It probably had more to do with her belief that it would work than with the ritual itself, but she couldn’t exactly test that, so she stuck with what she knew. After bowing, she felt the sensation of a second, more bestial mind occupying her body, manifesting as a pleasant warmth that spread out from her chest. Her eyes began to glow softly, like candles, while her hair transformed into dense red flames, dancing atop her head but leaving her skin unharmed.

“I’m going to scout from above,” she announced before the others had a chance to respond to Akira. “I’ll stay within line of sight so we’ll know if either of us gets attacked.”

With that, she pointed her hands at the ground and created small red jets of flame from her palms, the force of which lifted her gently off the ground. Two larger jets then surged from the soles of her boots, propelling her into the air more quickly. Flying had been a pain to learn, but she was quite comfortable with it by now. Her hair created a fifth fiery streak in her wake as she zipped away, flying closer to the centre of the construction site while ascending high enough to not disappear from view behind all the scaffolding. She would make for an easily-visible target for any demons down below, but also a difficult one to hit. She didn’t like making herself a target, but if all went well, it wouldn’t take long for the others to get into position once they had pointers about the demons’ whereabouts. Assuming the newcomers cooperated. Hopefully Emi and Akira would see to that.
@Dragonfly 9 You didn't ask me, but I would imagine your initial post about arriving in Bradena would be long enough to stand on its own. I think it's best to only do collabs for back-and-forth conversations, so we can keep a fairly normal posting rate.

While Hirasawa addressed the team, Natsumi nervously wrung her hands. Then she considered that two brand new recruits were watching, so she put her hands behind her back instead, trying to look confident. She certainly wouldn't have liked it if her seniors seemed nervous on her first day. The young girl, no wait, the young boy did at least seem a lot more comfortable than she had been on her first day joining the action. Maybe too comfortable. As for the foreigner, well, she was getting mixed messages from that one. She couldn't help but wonder if it was a bad idea to bring two new recruits on what sounded like a challenging mission right away. But she trusted her superior's judgement, mostly.

As Hirasawa strode away to the vehicle bay, Natsumi quickly followed after her. On her way out of the meeting room, she cast a long glance at the two newcomers, hoping to confirm that they were on the same page. "Are you two ready for this?"

Natsumi was startled out of her book by the sound of the alarm. The familiar sense of fear and anxiety crept up her spine. She had seen action before, but not nearly enough to be inured to it. As usual, a part of her mind told her to hide from the problem. If she buried her face in her book, she might not even notice whatever was going on out there. That was absurd, of course. People's lives were on the line and she had the power to do something about it, so it was only logical that she should.

She put her book down on her desk a bit too forcefully and rose to her feet. She was already wearing her flame-resistant bodysuit, but with the top stripped off and tied around her waist, revealing a tank top underneath. That was her compromise between battle-readiness and comfort. When she first started this job, she would wear the suit during her entire shift, but that didn't feel right. The suit made her look strong, confident, sexy… and that wasn't who she was at all. Still, now was the time to put on her heroic façade. She pushed her arms into the sleeves and zipped up the body, then removed the elastic from her ponytail, letting her long red hair tumble freely across her shoulders. Taking a sharp breath to suck in all her worries, she walked briskly towards their usual assembly point. Kubo was probably already out there trying to whip her colleagues into formation. That was one of the few points of relative certainty in this profession.
@Hyyde322 I've put a response for you in the collab pad.
Natsumi Fujikawa

Age: 25

Gender: Female

Appearance
Natsumi is a young Japanese woman with long red hair (formerly black) and brown eyes. She stands at 160 cm and has a slender, feminine build. In everyday life, she wears fairly mundane clothing, though she likes to put in some effort to look nice. When on the job with the DDF, she wears a fire-resistant black bodysuit.

Personality
Natsumi is a kind, polite, and reserved girl. She is diligent and thoughtful, but nervous under pressure. She likes to be social and make friends with her co-workers, but she isn’t all that good at carrying a conversation. What she lacks in confidence, she does make up for in loyalty and supportiveness. In her free time, she likes to read a variety of books, from fantasy to educational. (She’s not above smutty romance novels, though she’ll try to deny it.) She also enjoys challenging video games, though she feels a bit shy about that supposedly unfeminine activity.

Skills
Natsumi is generally sharp and analytical, if given enough space to think things over. She has a degree in chemistry and possesses a bunch of other random knowledge from books she’s read. She’s also pretty good at action games, though that doesn’t tend to translate to real life fighting skill.

Contracted Shadow: Suzaku, the Vermilion Bird
Suzaku is a nature spirit native to the lands of East Asia, representing fire, summer, and the south. Being a primal spirit, it doesn’t speak but communicates directly into Natsumi’s mind with abstract emotions and intuitions. She doesn’t fully understand its thoughts and desires, but one thing it definitely wants is to burn away the unholy taint of the demons.

Contract Type: Possession

Contract Rank: B

Contract Abilities
In her normal form, Natsumi has a minor resistance to heat, able to touch boiling water or a hot pan without pain or injury. When possessed by Suzaku, her eyes glow and her hair turns into semi-solid fire, retaining the same volume but dancing around like flames. Her fiery hair burns things on contact, but is fairly weak by default. While in this state, she becomes immune to mundane fire (up to ~1200 °C). This resistance doesn’t extend to her clothes, so she wears a special fire-resistant suit while on the job.

While possessed, she can generate fire from any part of her body. She primarily conjures it from her hands as a form of attack, creating large jets of red flame that can rapidly burn wood and flesh. By creating small but powerful jets of fire from her hands and feet, she can propel herself to fly at high speed. The boots of her battle outfit have many small holes in the soles to facilitate this. She can also empower her fiery hair, turning it hotter and elongating it up to a few meters in length, then controlling it like a burning whip for close-range combat.

The fire she creates is to some extent tied to her emotions. When overcome with powerful emotion, she can generate larger flames more quickly. She is aware of this effect, but because she is naturally quite reserved and timid, she hasn’t made much use of it and doesn’t know the full extent to which it could empower her.

Lastly, she can choose to concentrate her fire into smaller blue flames that burn at up to 2000 °C, capable of melting steel. However, her heat resistance doesn’t reach that high, so those flames will burn her at a similar rate that normal fire would burn a normal human. She has experimented with this ability in a controlled environment, but has never used it in battle.

Brief Backstory
Natsumi had a fairly normal childhood in Tokyo. She was a gifted child who did well at school and soon developed quite a high opinion of her academic talents. Like many, she was raised with the Shinto religion, but she wasn’t very devout, instead favouring the empirical. After high school, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She intended to follow up with a master’s after that, but things panned out very differently.

One day, a demon appeared while Natsumi was out in the city. Although it was only a Beast-class, the DDF was not yet on the scene, leading to a panic. While others scattered and fled, Natsumi was paralyzed with indecision until it was too late. Once the demon was in view, running away would only alert it, so she hid instead, with little success. Feeling helpless and betrayed by her supposed intellect, she desperately prayed to any kami who might be listening to save her. For reasons she still doesn’t quite understand, Suzaku answered her call, initiating a shadow contract. In a blur of emotion, she incinerated the attacking demon. When the DDF arrived shortly after, they found her stunned and confused, with most of her clothes burned away.

Once brought to safety, she realised that her hair had been permanently turned red by the contract. The DDF explained what had happened to her and offered to enrol her in their academy. She was initially reluctant, arguing that she wasn’t a fighter and shouldn’t be trusted with superpowers. But she ultimately agreed for the greater good.
@VitaVitaAR Great. As an aside, how many players are you hoping for?
After much contemplation, my character!

I also went with a named mythological being, but I imagine this one is less problematic.

I like the idea of a pirate ship roleplay but I think you're not getting a lot of traction because you're not giving the players much to work with. Like, you'll be the GM, so you'll control everything outside of this crew. But you also control the captain whose authority this crew is bound by. So really, it seems like the players are applying to be pawns in a story you 99% control. What's in it for them?
