"Hi! I'm Rio, what's your name?" PERSONALITY: | An upbeat soul and indomitable spirit are just a few of the things one could say about the boy. growing up sheltered and well taken care of has not killed his endless curiosity for the world. There are very few things that can sour his mood, always looking to improvise, adapt, and overcome his challenges with a carefree attitude.
His curiosity often gets the better of him and he can come off as annoying or gets himself into some kind of trouble. Rio is not very aware of the hardships of this world and its darkness. He only ever sees the good in people and is normally very open about his own feelings about things. This can also lead to him being awkward or aloof. After all, he is still learning a lot about social ques and what's acceptable outside of high society.
Freedom is something he greatly treasures, freedom to make one’s own decisions, and freedom to forge one’s own path. one would find a fast friend with him, and friends are one of the things he will fight for. always trying to find the easy way out of hard situations without hurting others as much as possible. striving sometimes too hard for the approval of others can get him in the wrong crowd if not careful. more often than not his naiveté gets him into plenty of trouble on its own.
The boy does dislike structured environments and nobility. He finds it dull and suffocating, it’s the very cage he will always find himself running from. finding more mature topics or conversations difficult and uncomfortable, like talking about his past, emotions, or life and death. All of this is not to say Rio is a coward and will always run, he will fight but the boy just doesn't like to hurt people. |
MAGIC: | Barrier Magic - calling forth his magic Rio can shape it as he sees fit. its applications are limited only by the caster’s strength, wisdom, and imagination. His barriers don’t follow the standard hexagon look like other barriers, his are made up of interlocking shapes that look similar to a spider’s web. It can be used and manipulated to cover large and small areas, to both absorb or redirect attacks. The barriers he creates are often purple in color. |
SPELLS:
Sentinel - Defensive / support - Small personal shield’s he can erect In front of individuals he can see. Requires a great amount of concentration for more than two shields at a time.
Hand Cannon - Offensive - A stronger version of the magic bullet, shaping his barrier into a tube for the bullet to shoot out of allowing for a more powerful shot. Must hold it with two hands.
Bulwark - Defensive – His strongest barrier so far allowing him to erect the barrier in an area centered on himself to protect himself and others. requires full concentration and can be shaped or directed in certain directions if needed. more layers can be added at a higher manna cost.
ABILITIES & SKILLS:
Beloved by mana - being of a noble lineage Rio has an ample supply of mana. However, he will often fake being tired to try and hide this from others.
Free as a Bird - Agility and reflexes are his friend. He grew up running and dodging his family, their magic, and his handlers. His skills grew when he started spending more time in crowded city streets dodging through crowds. Occasionally using these skills to step out of the way of incoming attacks.
Need a Distraction? - One thing that's not combat related that Rio excels at is distraction or causing a scene. Either through his acting, singing, dancing, or generally being clumsy. He knows how to get the attention of others and when the time comes, quickly retreat from the area.
GOALS & FEARS: | My dreams? To be free and not have to hide from my family. To find my own family in the magic knights so we can protect each other. To make sure that no one else will have to worry about a cage or being a slave. |
| Not being strong enough to be wanted, not being accepted by others even when he knows he sometimes tries too hard. Worst of all he fears building up a family and friends only for them to learn who he is and abandon him. |
A little over 15 years ago Rio was born into the Aindun noble family. The family was known for having some superior barrier mages but know far better for their shrewd marketing tactics and rumors of backhanded deals. Such deals always favored the nobility leaving the lower-class citizens to scramble and scrounge their money just to get by when living in the area his family controlled. Not to mention the price changes for their goods depending on the area you were in.
The young lad learned quick how to talk and run yet showed little in the way of basic magic ability. Outshined by his siblings in all things proper and noble, he was quickly brushed aside. His handlers were more of a parental figure than his parents ever were. Still, they had a reputation to keep, and he was drilled day in and out on noble edicate. The lessons normally resulted in pain reinforcement when he inevitably lost concentration.
He was 8 when he made his first escape attempt, his handlers picked him back up within a couple hours. The punishment he received from this, and his many other attempts scared his back, arms, and legs in places that are easily hidden by clothes. A testament to his will to be free for sure. Each time he made it further and further for longer durations but each time they would find him. Either by tracking him or putting out secretive bounties they would always find him. This never deterred his optimistic demeanor as he refused to let them break his spirit.
Then the day came, he turned 15 and was allowed to attend the grimoire ceremony. His parents almost didn't let him go given his lacking magical aptitude up to this point. He was ecstatic when he received his book for him, it meant freedom and he knew exactly what he was going to do. With the distraction from all the others celebrating Rio slipped out into the darkness and ran.
It’s been a few months since he slipped away. A few close calls just made him run farther towards the only place he knew he could escape from his family, The Magic Knights. He took the name Vega from the first family that was kind to him. They gave him some food and a place to sleep for a few nights and in return he helped them around their small farm. In time he made sure to dirty his appearance and found someone that dyed his hair black. Since than he has been relying on petty thievery and just being kind to people to survive. Stealing only small portions of food and the odd article of clothing.

im also looking into a making character here (the naive type)... mostly just lurking and reading the story so far.
In any case I've also just found out that Tropical Storm Beryl will be sending ripples through my neck of the woods, so if there's any further delays in updates or responses it's probably safe to assume I lost power or something. My area is terrible about blackouts even in good weather, so I fully expect to lose power right as I'm in the middle of a post or something. DX
just do what Florida does, shoot at the storm show it who's boss
Agar looked up and listened to the big orc talk about his reward. Eyes gleaming with curiosity at the talk of skills as well. Already figuring out as much, he still wanted to look the part of the Orc runt without a clue. Giving the older orc several enthusiastic nods of acknowledgement. Staring at the rat skull for a moment longer, he then gathered his things and headed to the war chief’s hut. Stopping for a moment for a quick couple gulps of water.
Arriving at the hut, Agar noticed a couple older orcs unloading gear into a few piles with only a couple other runts already looking through the gear. The gear itself wasn’t horrible but was better than what he currently wore and probably better than what he could make on his own. He began to look through the gear after handing off the rat skull.
He took a little bit of time, even after deciding what he wanted just by looking. Taking a moment to try and commit to memory the way the other tools, weapons, and clothes were made so that he may be able to replicate something similar in the future. As for what he chose to keep? good boots should help him explore more rocky and unstable terrain, while the water skin was an easy choice for him the hard part was the weapon. Already acquiring a fire hardened spear, he was looking more at the ranged weapons. Ultimately, Agar decided his ranged weapon off the possible availability to find or craft more ammunition the easiest. So, he decided on the sling.
He also found a buckskin shirt to match his pants, some cloth wrappings he was able to wrap around his hands and down his arms, a light square piece of a dull brown and grey fabric that was frayed on the edges, and another longer piece of rough scratchy fabric that had the same colorations. The runt secured the larger rough fabric around his shoulders for a cloak and wrapped the smaller square piece of fabric around his neck and head, a practice he picked up in Afghanistan. The Shemagh was very good at keeping one cool and protecting yourself from the heat of the day and high winds. If any of the other orcs asked him why or how he tied the cloth around his head like he did, he would happily tell them.
All and all the look seemed to bring him a little more comfort and made him feel a little less exposed. After he filled out his water skin Agar decided to accept the quest he was given earlier. The next thing to figure out was where he wanted to explore, he could find a shelter location for himself later. He spotted movement up the hill and saw a lone figure making its way up the mountain following the stream. That wouldn’t be that bad of a place to explore, it would also give him more information for the map in his head of the surrounding area.
So, Agar began to follow the path the other Orc runt was going. Getting closer he could make out that they wore a wolf pelt cloak and had a similar style spear to his. When he was close enough, he made his presence known with a simple question, “Can Agar join?” He asked, keeping his distance but still close enough to chat, walk, and climb behind them.
