Bio

Maybe the real plot was the friends we made along the way. [Last Updated: February 1, 2025]

I'm too old for this shit and I have learned not to share too much of my personal life on the internet. I earned a 4-year English degree, work as an English and writing tutor at a local college, a communications copywriter for a non-profit, and I'm a development editor at an academic publishing company. That means I word good.

I like literature and poetry. I first started writing as a hobby with online roleplay at the start of 2010, and I've slowly drifted away from it in recent years. I enjoy most genres, but if I had to pick a couple of favorites, they would be sci-fi and high fantasy—heavy emphasis on the high fantasy. Some of my favorite moments have come from Elder Scrolls roleplays, since it appeals to the D&D nerd in me.

I have a tendency to get carried away with making my character sheets. I've always been a fan of characters overcoming their weaknesses and obstacles and I try to make that show in many of my characters. Therefore, many of the narratives I explore come from a place of vulnerability, but I try to balance the heavy themes with light whimsy. Sometimes though that door swings the other way and I lean into the whimsy while sneaking in moments of vulnerability.

I also try to research whatever it is I'm writing about so that I'm not just spitting into the wind. Unless that's what my character is doing, in which case I try to make sure that's made clear in my writing. Sometimes that gets in the way, like in the case of blacksmith character I wanted to make but felt compelled to study up on blacksmithing first (don't fall into that trap, no one really gives a shit).

It’s kind of hard to define my style, as I’m influenced by all sorts of literary movements and schools of criticism; dark romanticism, modernism, post-modernism, Marxism, feminism, post-structuralism—I have a lot of isms in my pocket. Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of my favorite dark romantic authors, Dickinson is one of my favorite naturalist poets, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Langston Hughes, and Robert Frost—they’ve all in some ways informed my writing, as well as many others. I even tend to look to some of my fellow guild mates for inspiration or analyze what I like about their writing and see what I can do to improve my own through their example.

A set plot doesn't seem like it would be reliable in this setting though. You can count on crooks to be dishonest. Maybe if someone had called upon a band of heroes, or if we were all wrongfully imprisoned, something could come along that'd bind us together. Here we have many people with different ideas and goals and history. Not all of them has something in common, so I'm wondering how they're all gonna get together and accomplish something with one another.
On another note, I got a computer on hand. Future posts will be tidier. Woo! I will make one tomorrow.

Will we be railroaded on this plot line of breaking free this noble, or are we free to make our decisions?
I'm not trying to start an argument either, I was just bringing up some notes that might make writing a little awkward later. There's technically nothing wrong with your character, so you don't have to worry about that. This is just a heads up.
Is it? I didn't think so, in fact I checked through to make sure they weren't. I'll work on it to change it up if you'd like, but it'll take some time. The only similarity I saw was that they were both not too friendly with the nobility. Kane's an intellectual, Royce is a warrior. Kane's a blonde haired pretty boy, Royce is a boisterous mountain of a dude.

I guess what I'm asking is, what do you want me to change? I don't see very many similarities so I can't really fix a problem I'm blind to.

You forgot to say "bitch."

I mean, make no mistake, Kane takes care of his appearance, but that is because he is part of a noble order and it is practically required of him. There's nothing stopping him from getting down and dirty, and he went through all the same training, so their builds won't be very different, and their skill would be close.

In fact, you even mentioned him as a great strategist and an intellectual fighter, so I'm wondering why you're drawing that line now. Both are considered heroes of the downtrodden, are natural leaders. Sure, all of these qualities befit Knights, it just doesn't contrast with the current roster. I'm not gonna stop you from continuing the sheet, if we have two very similar characters, then so be it. I just warn that IC writing might feel crowded.
Understood, I'll figure something out. Probably leave a blank space in his skills.
It was actually mentioned in Finchs comments on our Mage. He was near the end of his early education and was set on a path to the college, and of the branches, illusion stood out to him more. With the college just around the corner, it wouldn't be far fetched for a student to start looking into their intended field.

If that wasn't mentioned in the sheet, I am sorry. Working on a phone, you make shortcuts and forget things.
Humanity, fuck yeah. I'll either be making a scheming nobleman or a Knight of the Ram. Magic is for nerds. This looks like it's going to be great.

You don't have to, but consider reading the history of my character's sheet - it's something of a hidden lore for Ram Knights.
<Snipped quote by Spoopy Scary>

Well, he still does have the crossbow. He'd go from knowing how to use it, even if mediocrely, to having no damn clue.

Good point. I have a better idea,

You'd expect an athlete to have a high proficiency in athletics, not a beggar who is fast on his feet. I'll move it down one tier. I'd then have two slots available for somewhat in addition to the crossbow: acrobatics, since he'll do a bit of climbing and jumping - and it was revealed he was destined for the college, so maybe a touch of illusion, as has been revealed,
It's still early, and I'm figuring that replacing marksman as a somewhat proficient skill with acrobatics would make more sense. Is that alright?
