Gray was b making breakfast for the family. Normally, he would let Lara make her own or for Zach now that she knew how to cook. He used to do more in the past, but these days. It helps to keep himself busy in these trying times, along with maintaining the house. This time, he is making the kids their favorite, french toast for Lara and waffles for Zach, while making himself some scrambled eggs. Gray thought they deserved some of the good food they still had left. Though as he finished making the food, it did not help to stop him from feeling the bitter uncertainty of what lay ahead for them.
"Lara, Zach. Breakfast is ready." Saying it loud enough that they could hear him.
Lara was first, and soon came Zach. "Morning, Dad," both siblings said, and they grabbed their food, sat at the table, and started eating. But before he could bring his meal to the table and eat with them, Lara spoke up first. "You didn't have to wake up this early and make this for us."
Gray could only smile at her, "I wanted to, and while I may be old, I can still handle myself and keep up with you two."
Lara replied, "I know, Dad, but still, you are old and things are... She did not want to finish the sentence. "Just we would like you not get hurt or push yourself too much."
Gray now with his food in hand and walked over to the table and sat down with them again with a soft smile, he spoke. "Well, I know my limits and trust me, I am not pushing myself too hard. Besides we have other things to worry about."
"Just looking out for you, dad," Lara sounded concerned.
"Like that noise last night?" Zach added, "I had a hard time falling asleep after it woke me up."
"Yeah, Zach, first we have to deal with the... infected and whatever caused that noise last night. It may be nothing, but in these times, it could be something bad."
"Should we investigate and see what it was? Maybe even get some supplies from it." Lara spoke up with interest.
"Yes, but not you two. It is too dangerous."
"But by yourself is also dangerous and..."
Gray suddenly interjected, "I know how to handle myself, you two do not, and I do not want anything to happen to you two."
Lara was caught off-guard said nothing for a moment as Zach went to eat his waffles but would speak again. "Then how about you train us? I know you do not talk about your army days but, I feel like it would not hurt right now."
"You are right about that, and I was thinking about that. I may not always be around to protect you two, and it would help to keep you two safe."
Zach spoke up, "that would be cool, training to be soldiers and stuff."
Gary chuckled, "not soldiers but fighters, and I know we have some stuff lying around that would make good melee weapons."
"I like the sound of that dad," Lara spoke before eating some of her french toast.
"Well, after I sort out some things, I think practice will start sometime today, so eat up before your food gets cold."
Zach and Lara nodded and smiled and went to eat their food. Gary joined them, and the family went about eating their breakfast. They had a busy day ahead of them, and they had to be ready for whatever came down the street. Gray would make sure of that.
