Overextended and strapped for funds, he's worked the trial of a job for several years at this point. Although often having to switch focus from one part of the town to the next, he is a steadfast man, taking nothing from anyone and getting the job down as efficiently and effectively as possible. Jonathan Davis runs the town with a pride and prose unmatched by another in the region, a civil war veteran himself, the man had been leading in part for many of years. As well as being the Mayor of the town, he is also the husband of the woman how has been running the town's infirmary; Mary Davis. __________________________________________________________________________

Skilled in her trade, harboring and sharing the knowledge she had learned over many years, she has led the infirmary with a passion with the backing of her husband, Mayor Davis. At heart, Maria is a kind woman, the type of lady to drop her tasks of the day to assist an injured person she found on the side of the road, one who accepts all into her infirmary, no matter their past. Despite his lack of smarts, he is a skilled horse rider, and a good shot with a revolver, having grown up in unruly, rural Texas. Though he sometimes lacks confidence to make bold decisions on his own, he trusts Sheriff Ramos implicity, and will typically follow orders fairly well. __________________________________________________________________________

As a pair of some of the few original inhabitants of the original settlement who'd never left, Jason and Patricia Miller built their home upon the land. originally a small cabin, homed to only the two, they began opening their home to travelers who yearned a place to rest their head for but a small fee. As time flew and the town grew, the Millers' home grew in size, adding extensions each passing year to keep up with the demand of their service; this was the birth of Haven Inn. A modestly sized homey feeling in stationed in the center of the town. A hopelessly in love couple, wherein death will be their only dividing force, the two bear a soul as kind as the other. Patricia, often called "Patty" by the locals of the town, is a woman of a quiet demeanor, her face often found shoved within the confines of a book while working the counter of the inn. With a voice as sweet as the pie she bakes, she skillfully runs the front operations of the Inn. On the other hand, her husband, Jason, is a loud and rowdy version of a man. Often playful with customers and a jokester to all, a man always trying to push his wife out of her comfort zone. While rarely found at the front desk, he can be found working odd jobs and doing repairs around the building, he stands as a man who has a constant need to be on his feet working. __________________________________________________________________________

Formally known as Ranger Thomas Mellon, his history in this land stretches far beyond his time with the Ranger Force. From the deserts of the New Mexico territory, to the plains of Texas, Mellon has served the land of his birth as a monster hunter. As a younger man, Mellon traveled from town to town, tackling any creature bothering the folk of the village. From the common Jackalope to the elusive skinwalker, he holds the skulls of many a creature birthed upon this cursed land. Later in life being recruited by the Texas Rangers to join their forces, soon being shipped off the Amistad for his first assignment. What Mellon lacks in physical strength, his mind picks up the slack. A quick man whose mind can catch on to details and patterns quickly, Mellon is not easily fooled. To the town folk, he works as a personable guy, assisting the Sheriff's department in their workings with his small brigade of men he brought alongside him. __________________________________________________________________________

A quiet man of his past, but a loud one of the present, McRiley is the owner and defacto bartender of "The Kiskadee Cantina." If there is one thing original residents remember of his arrival is he came bearing booze. Whether he buys it or makes his own, the barrels of the cantina have always been stacked to the brim with booze courtesy of McRiley. He is a no-nonsense older man, who'll joke around with those of his patrons but will demand the leave of those who cause trouble, lest he reveal the shotgun under the bar. In times when he is not serving alcohol, McRiley is a man trapped in love with music. With his trusty decade-old guitar in hand, he will serenade the patrons of the bar with his old still youthful sounding singing voice and his strumming tunes from the guitar. Otherwise, he will be sat on the outer deck of the bar, softly strumming the archaic strings in silence. __________________________________________________________________________

His stoicism has made him a reliable member of his community, a feature defined by his own personal losses, as well as the constant need to prove himself in a world that often sees him as an outsider. Still in a period of healing and mourning, Benjamín has no truly close friends in Amistad, but is a friendly acquaintance to just about anybody who isn't on his bad side. As for those on his bad side, he is known for putting his foot down harshly when required, but has learned how to pick his battles. Knowing that the area around Amistad will always be a hotbed of crime, Benjamín has made his rules clear: keep your antics out of his town, and don't find yourself on a State-wide wanted list, and he won't bother you. In an otherwise chaotic land, Benjamín is deeply principled, having a strong internal sense of fairness and justice. Beneath his tough exterior, he has a compassionate heart, particularly for those who are marginalised or in need. However, he is careful not to let this compassion be seen as weakness. He maintains a guarded demeanor, letting few people get close to him. His empathy often manifests in subtle ways, such as helping those in need without seeking recognition. Though he doesn’t seek the spotlight, Benjamín naturally commands respect and authority. His leadership style is quiet and steady; he leads by example and earns the loyalty of those around him through acts of integrity. Though once a devoted Catholic, Benjamín has witnessed unholy horrors that have made him question his faith. While he still practices, his mind is clouded with doubt. The rest of his face is usually clean-shaven, but keeps a permanent five o'clock shadow due to the darkness of his hair. He always wears his father's gold crucifix around his neck. His sheriff's uniform is dusty and practical: a cream-coloured shirt, dark canvas trousers tucked into scuffed leather boots, and a wide-brimmed black Stetson hat. A Colt revolver rests in a tidy holster at his left-hip, and a shiny silver star is pinned to his coat, marking his authority. Though a dark, heavy wool coat is part of his uniform, he is rarely seen wearing it during the daytime due to the region's intense heat. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ " S O W H E R E Y E B E E N , W H A T S Y E R P A S T ? " " S O W H E R E Y E B E E N , W H A T S Y E R P A S T ? " History "Grew up down by Corpus, did a little bit of everything before I put on this badge. This is just where I ended up." Born in 1858 in the blossoming port town of Corpus Christi, Benjamín Ramos Estrada was the eldest of three children. As someone of Mexican-descent born in a now American Texas, Benjamín was part of a large demographic known as Tejano. Benjamín's mother was a kindly garment-maker named Adriana, who had been a prostitute before marrying. His father, Ignacio, was a Vaquero: a livestock herder, or cowboy. Ignacio was a quiet, honest and hard-working man who instilled strong values in his children, and a deeply devoted Catholic. In efforts to either protect his family, or perhaps to blend in during a deeply divisive period, Ignacio took up arms for the Confederacy during the Civil War -- a fact that Benjamín ruminates upon to this day. Throughout his youth, Benjamín both witnessed and experienced significant predjudices due to his race. Despite his unfair treatment, he was determined to earn his place in society, even if he had to work twice as hard as others to get it. This resolve was redoubled when his father died when Benjamín was only fourteen, which prompted him to pursue any kind of labour that could keep a roof over his family's head. Ignacio has been shot dead in a botched rustling when bandits had sought to steal cattle under his watch. This event, in addition to many other injustices that Benjamín witnessed living in a land on the fringe of justice, pushed Benjamín towards a career as a lawman. After spending several years doing odd labour jobs, such as carpentry and field-work, Benjamín became a ranger aged twenty. He shined in his role, driven to succeed as he shouldered the responsibilities of supporting his family, and stubbornly sought to rise above the prejudices of the post-Confederate South. His heritage made him a target for scorn in the eyes of some, but it also endowed him with a unique perspective on life in the volatile borderlands. He worked hard, spoke with honesty, and always looked out for the vulnerable. By twenty-three he had courted and married a beautiful local girl named Juliette. In 1881, their daughter was born: Maria. An adventurous and sweet child, she quickly became the centre of Benjamín's world. In 1986, Benjamín had truly settled in his hometown. His mother was comfortable, his siblings were all grown up and making a life for themselves. But thing fell apart, as they have a tendency to do whenever one gets too comfortable. Maria fell ill with diptheria and did not recover, dying at only five years old. Not only did this break Benjamín and Juliette individually, it also shattered their previously settled relationship. Within weeks, they found themselves on seperate journeys of recovery. In efforts to heal his own way, Benjamín decided to distance himself from his hometown, and requested station elsewhere. He was offered the job of Sheriff in a booming cowtown down by the Rio Grande, which he gladly accepted -- perhaps not fully aware of what he had signed up to. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ " L A S T , W H A T B R O U G H T Y E H E R E ? " " L A S T , W H A T B R O U G H T Y E H E R E ? " Amistad, TX "You could say I was lookin’ for a place that needed a bit of order, somewhere that felt like it was on the edge of things. Amistad’s got good folks, even if the ground’s a bit shaky underneath." As soon as he arrived in his new digs, Benjamín was thrust into the deep-end. With pirates to the south, outlaws to the north, and supernatural wildlife all around, there's no such thing as a 'day off' for the lawman of Amistad. Known by most in the town as 'Sheriff Ramos', he has become the town’s solitary figure of order. Though a stoic and dependable figure within the town, he is very clearly under-equipped to police the region effectively, having only a single, rather incompitent deputy to assist him.

'Floating' (Star Wars 2 BBY)

Viszt stood by the side of the female trooper, soothed by a renewed sense of safety. He watched her regard what seemed to be her commanding officer, only he lacked the regalia of anything more than a common grunt. Odd, but unlikely anything to worry about. The Basilisk wasn't exactly running at peak efficiency, Viszt reasoned, and thus it was to be expected that cutbacks across the board would leave some squadrons understaffed, perhaps forcing some lower ranked troopers to step up in roles of leadership. The explanation that Viszt conjured in his mind was enough to banish his concerns. However, the prolonged silence from the 'officer' was a little concerning, though it was soon interrupted by --

CRASH.

With a great scattering of scrap, an urchin tumbled from a balcony and thudded down onto the dirt not a meter from Viszt. His heart skipped a beat, not immediately registering what exactly was happening. Still shaken from the twi'lek's intimidation, he visibly recoiled in shock. Were they back to finish the job? No. Just some street-fight it seemed. Either way, it was further evidence that this town was no good at all. Within moments of escaping one cloister of dangerous junkers, they were now raining down onto Viszt from the sky.

The 'officer' grabbed the flying urchin and dragged him into a nearby building, blaster at the ready, gruffly commanding one of his colleagues to pursue the rest of the street-fighting junkers, and the other to follow him into the building. Viszt supposed he was safer with the troopers, and followed without dispute. The 'officer' barked at the room's occupants, forcefully evicting them, with a pointed blaster as incentive. A feeling of unease returned to Viszt, with the hairs on the back of his neck prickling up.

Something was not right...

As the 'officer' interrogated the junkers in a perculiarly highly-strung manner, Viszt found a stool to sit down on. He wasn't concerned with petty crime, so paid little notice to the rabble, but peered up at the female trooper. "Some town... Even if I had gotten out of that alley, I'm not sure I'd have got back to the Basilisk with all my internal organs intact." He exhaled. "Thanks again."

"You," the 'officer' barked abruptly in Viszt's direction, cutting short any immediate response. "How long till your transport arrives?"

Not right at all...

He glanced up at the trooper with narrowed eyes. What a strange question to ask if they'd been sent to retrieve him. After all, they would be the ones transporting him back. If they hadn't been sent to retrieve him, why had they gone along with it? The alarm bells were well and truly ringing now. "Five minutes." he replied, estimating based on how long the transports usually took to be prepared and dispatched. The 'officer' quickly turned away. It was unclear if he was aware of Viszt's suspicions, but when the troopers began to shepherd the junkers into storage containers, it no longer mattered. This was very blatantly not Imperial procedure, and whoever these people were, they were letting their masks slip.

The 'officer' tore off his helmet, revealing a flustered, sweating human. He glared at the female trooper. "You may not have liked the plan before, might have thought it was overly simple. But if you add any more twists and complexity to this little caper, I swear I will bury you under the Basilisk. So, what would you have me do here? You want me to shoot this Chiss bastard and hope we don't spill any of his blood, so you can have your gorram officer's uniform? Or are we taking him with us? You just developed a sixth sense for trusting people you just met? What's it gonna be?"

Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

"No. More. Surprises." The man stared forward, waiting for the female officer to decide Viszt's fate. But if this was a life or death moment, he wasn't going to leave it to a stranger to decide. He wasn't sure who these people were, but clearly they were headed to the Basilisk, and not for a friendly visit. They must be rebels -- and if they had no use for him, he'd be heading for a dirt nap.

"Kolto," he said calmly. He was scared, but he didn't have time to indulge in self-pity at this moment. He needed to figure a way out.

The room stared blankly at him, clueless.

"It's a medicine. It's mostly been supplanted by bacta nowadays, but has its uses, especially for when noxious substances have been inhaled." He gulped dryly, composing himself. "It's rather allergenic, hence why it has been widely superseded. -- The cooling system is down in the Basilisk's medical bay, so we've had to move any refrigerated medical goods into a container in a storage facility just a street over from here." He looked directly into the leader's face, holding his eye contact, keen to prove his worth. "I maintain the personnel's medical records. The Admiral has a rather severe allergy to kolto; deathly, even."

The room was silent for a moment. He'd played his hand. He just had to hope it was enough. As the silence prolonged for a beat too long, he realised he may have misjudged. A horror dawned on him that they mightn't even be rebels.

"I'm not willing to die for the Empire," he said, this time, his voice shaking slightly. "Let me live and I'll forget I ever saw you."

The year is 1888.

Times are changing in Europe. The world hurtles towards the 20th century with great advancements in industry, culture and technology. Across the Atlantic, however, progress is a little slower.

They say that the new world was discovered when Norsemen followed a hot, red streak across the sky that sent storms of ash raging all across the world. Many hundreds of year on, this shattered continent is still untamed. The air here is thick with stories of folk who’ve witnessed things that defy reason; rivers running red, whispering woods, and dead men walking. Populated by creatures twisted by otherworldly influences, and etched with eldritch ley-lines, the American frontier is a place where European order doesn’t quite apply.

The people who have carved out lives in this rugged continent have learned to survive: but survival here means more than just battling the elements. It means confronting the unknown. There's plenty of work available, thanks to the abundance of untapped resources, but none of it is easy. Outside of major colonial settlements, wealthy industrialists known as Barons hold most of the power, employing labourers to tap into the fat of the land, and mercenaries for protection. In the frontier, progress is a double-edged sword. For every mile of track laid by the Barons, there’s a cost -- a price paid not just in sweat and toil, but in the balance of forces that have long governed the land.

Whoever you are, you're a soul making your way through the lonesome west. Perhaps you live in a cowtown on the frontier, or maybe you're a city-slicker setting out into the unknown for the first time. The frontier is a diverse place. While there are plenty of labourers working on a Baron's dime, there are mercenaries, outlaws, lawmen, prostitutes, trappers, monster hunters, gamblers, cowboys, doctors, preachers, and all manner of people. All of you, whoever you are, have two things in common. The first, you have been called by something. Something inexplicable. The sky cries out your name, beckoning you further west than you've ever been; where it's said that a raging storm never ends. Where only the natives have ever really returned from. Where skin-walkers and wendigos dwell. But also, where miracles are said to come true.

The second thing you all have in common: you're in need of a god-damned miracle.

Writing standards & collaborative trust

I'm looking for people with solid prose & storytelling skills. I won't set any kind of minimum post length, but I'd very much to prefer avoiding low-effort posts. If you are in a back-and-forth conversation with another character, consider working on a post collaboratively. 'Yes anding' is another reason I am looking for more confident writers. The GMs will be guiding the overall narrative of the story, but ideally we can trust everyone to push forward individual plot beats. Anything major can be discussed in the discord, but I am super happy with the idea of people improvving situations without too much micromanagement.

Historicity

I am not going to tell you this RP will be historically accurate, but let's at least try and create the façade of realism. Put a little effort into making your character & posts authentic! You don't need to meticulously research the 1880s, but just be conscious of avoiding including anything ill-fitting.

Applications

As a rule of thumb, I will always consider exceptional applications, but for the most part, the group will be limited in size (for the sake of fluidity and quality). With this in mind, please be aware that applications may be rejected if they do not meet the previously outlined requirements. In the interests of wasting neither your time or the GMs', please make sure to read the rest of the rules before applying.

In North America, supernatural energy referred to as magick is a pervasive and unpredictable force that is etched into the very fabric of the land. This magick is ancient, wild, and deeply intertwined with the natural world, often manifesting in ways that are as mysterious as they are powerful. It’s not a structured or easily controlled power but something raw and primal, governed by the land, the stars, and the spirits that inhabit both.

Magick flows through the continent itself, particularly in areas near the Storm. The soil, rocks, and even the water in these regions are infused with energy, leading to strange phenomena like glowing rivers, floating chunks of earth, and forests that whisper to those who enter. Certain plants and minerals have absorbed this magick, becoming potent ingredients for spells and rituals. Naturally, creatures have also been affected, with the most dangerous monsters in the known world dwelling within the American borderlands. Wendigos, chupacabra, yeti -- even the walking dead.

As of 1888, very little is known in terms of the scientific workings of magick. It sometimes manifests elementally, with some being able to summon fire at their fingertips. Sometimes, it involves summoning or communicating with spirits. There appears to be no distinctive limit or ruleset for magick, but the vast majority of human practitioners are unable to wield the power for long without exhausting themselves. Curiously, however, the closer one strays to the Storm at the heart of the continent, the more their powers thrive.

United States
With the exception of its East Coast, the USA is an untamed nation. Ever since European colonisers set foot on the region's soil, its distinct differences from the rest of the world were felt. This is a place where supernatural energy courses through the land, evolving and disrupting the flora and fauna in unpredictable ways. Its sprawling frontier is ever-expanding, but forever burdened with the dangers of lawlessness, border disputes, and supernatural disturbances. Despite its dangers, the frontier has an abundance of untapped resources, and thus provides a great deal of opportunities for the brave and desperate. In recent history, two wars have affected the region. First, the Mexican-American war in the 1840s, which saw Mexico cede Texas to the US. The war was also relevant due to both sides' usage of magick in battle; a practice that was mutually outlawed by both sides as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Needless to say, the second and by far the more bloody war, the American Civil War, saw widespread, covert usage of magick. Already struggling to survive in the perilous west, the Civil War nearly broke America -- but it didn't, and in 1865 the war ended with the abolition of slavery. The Southern States, still reeling from defeat, have been left with the most deep-set scars from the war, further de-stabilising the already disrupted region.

The Storm Region
What would've been the 'Mountain States' is engulfed in a persistent storm that defies natural explanation, having become the epicenter of a new kind of gold rush -- one for strange, supernatural materials that defy the laws of nature. It is believed that this region is the heart of the continent's strange, supernatural energies. Those that are able to brave the storm and return alive are said to have accrued great bounties, both materially and spiritually; but there are very few to have done so. This phenomenon has drawn opportunists, scientists, and adventurers, but also powerful interests from both within and outside the country.

Canada
Canada's role as a British stronghold in North America has been elevated due to its proximity to the mysterious materials in the Storm Region. The British are heavily investing in scientific and military expeditions to explore and exploit these resources, often competing directly with American and Russian interests. The Canadian government, largely a puppet of British interests, supports these efforts, though there is a growing unease among the Canadian populace about the dangers posed by these unnatural pursuits.

Russian Empire
Russia's North American colony is centered around Neo-Novgorod, often referred to as Novgorodka, a burgeoning port and military outpost that serves as the launch point for Russian expeditions into the interior (modern-day Vancouver). The Russians are keenly interested in the supernatural materials found in the Storm Region and are engaged in a fierce competition with both the Americans and the British for control over these resources.

Native Americans
The Native American territories range from a patchwork of smaller nations, to vast, untouched regions. While many tribes were displaced during the westward expansion of European colonies, others have managed to hold onto their lands, often in areas now considered too dangerous or too strange for widespread settlement. Due to centuries of experience with the continent's ruthless supernatural qualities, the Natives are comfortable dwelling in areas that colonisers fear.

Texas Rangers
In remote areas of Texas, the only source of lawkeeping outside of local Sheriffs is via the rangers. Tasked with travelling the lands in search of threats to society and rooting them out, the Texas Rangers are usually occupied with monsters, pirates and outlaws. Some rangers are known to dabble in forms of magick to help uphold peace in the frontier.

The Barons
Though not an organised group, the colloquially named 'Barons' are a group of extremely wealthy industrialists and tycoons who sweep the frontier in search of its natural riches. Despite being despised by many for their greed, the Barons are accepted by most due to the jobs that they provide. Employing thousands to build, mine, harvest, and protect, the Barons' power and influence increases the further from the East Coast one goes. In frontier states like Texas, the land is just as much under the Barons' watch as it is the government's.

Security Agencies
Outside of heavily populated areas, there is a heavy presence of various security agencies. Often hired by Barons, the agencies are elite paramilitary that protect the interests of the highest bidders. Unlike lawmen of the United States, they rarely care about jusitce, and are instead much more interested in getting paid. If you ever cross someone of prominent wealth in the West, be warned, as you may be paid a visit by a private agent.

Rio Grande pirates
Marking the border between Mexico and the United States, the Rio Grande is one of the most prominent rivers in the continent. It is also seeped in strange arcane energy, and has resisted any and all attempts to be quelled by either bordering nation. Thus, it is rife with crime. Pirates and smugglers from both countries, as well as the Carribean, make their berth on the Rio Grande, frequently raiding coastal settlements around the continent.

Amistad, Texas, is a rugged and rapidly growing boom-town in the untamed frontier of southern Texas, just north of the Rio Grande. Originally a small, temporary settlement for travelers and traders, in the last three years it has evolved into a more permanent town with a core population of several dozen hardy souls who have chosen to make it their home. These residents have carved out a hardscrabble existence amidst the challenges of the frontier, drawn by the promise of opportunity, even as the town remains a crossroads for transient workers, drifters, and adventurers chasing fortune or escape. The town’s layout is simple but functional, with a main street lined with wooden buildings; a general store, a blacksmith, an infirmary, and a modest inn. The heart of Amistad is its bustling saloon, 'The Kiskadee Cantina', where locals and visitors alike gather to drink, gamble, and exchange news. The dusty streets are often filled with the sounds of hammers striking nails, as new buildings are constantly being erected to accommodate the influx of people.

Despite its small size, Amistad is a place of constant movement, with new faces arriving daily, some staying for only a few days, others longer as they prospect, ranch, or trade. The transient population often doubles or even triples the number of people in town, bringing with them stories of the frontier, rumors of riches, and the occasional trouble. The town's proximity to the Rio Grande makes it a strategic location, but also a dangerous one. The town is ever-watchful for the threat of attacks from pirates and outlaws who roam the borderlands, seeking to plunder the wealth passing through. The people of Amistad have learned to be cautious and well-armed, with every able-bodied man and woman ready to defend the town should needs must.

Adding to the already abundant dangers, the surrounding wilderness is home to creatures born from the strange magick that has seeped into the land. These monsters occasionally stray too close to Amistad, posing a deadly threat to anyone outside the town's perimeter. The Texas Rangers, however, frequently patrol the area, keeping these supernatural threats at bay and ensuring that the town remains a relatively safe haven in an otherwise perilous land.
