Drake and Ariella

Time: Evening of the 23rd
Location: Edwards Estate
Mentions: @FunnyGuy Lorenzo @Helo Callum

Ariella peeked from under the bottom of the scrapes from her dress, the dome of her skirt still erect in its full glory in the center of her brother's room.

The knocks at the door had alerted her, and she took a breath of relief at the voice on the other side of the door. She crawled out of her prison and walked shamefully towards the door before slowly opening it. Her red and swollen eyes greeted Drake as she just stared.

Drake looked at his downtrodden sister with concerned eyes. He quickly looked around to make sure no one else would see her hiding spot and quickly shuffled in before locking the door - stopping any prying eyes from finding her like Sebastian had done earlier. Moving backwards, Ariella pressed her back against the wall as she watched her brother with her swollen and red eyes. He began working to clean up what he could while still keeping most of his attention on her. Ariella looked away as their eyes met as she took in a deep breath listening to his attempts at picking up the graveyard of scraps.

”I think it should go without saying that I won’t be telling Mother about any of this.” His first idea was to offer comfort, and as he gathered the storm of scraps and pieced them into a pile for a trusted servant to come clean later. ”Why don’t you start from the beginning and air out some of your frustrations to me, Ari? I think you deserve a chance to be heard instead of being yelled at.”

Her eyes moved to look at him again with pain behind them “ I panicked… I couldn’t breath. The corset was too tight.” she looked down towards the large heeled glass shoe ”and she really out did herself with the shoes Ariella slouched her shoulders ” Brother… this whole situation…mother and father.. The titles..the balls..the courting..I can’t do it anymore Ari breathed as if releasing the air from her lungs after holding it for so long. The sense of relief she felt as she spoke was clear on her face as she continued “ I want to live in the woods, in a secluded little cabin…living off the land that I help grow and build. All of this…” she gestured towards the pile of scraps ”It’s fake Brother…none of this is real! Do you think that these events, that the women or the men are here for anything but climbing titles and statues? Their words are just as empty as the thoughts in mothers head!” her tone raised in frustration.

His face turned and he looked at her with a somber expression. She was genuine in her declaration and he knew that in all honesty, she was right. He didn’t really care for this farce that they all played in trying to gain power and prestige amongst one another, but he was one who was willing to dance the dance of nobles. His sister didn’t deserve to be forced into such monotony. ”Well, everyone should have a right to live the life they want to live. As much as our parents would see it other ways, I at least agree with you on that.” After doing a sufficient job of cleaning his study, Drake walked over to her and offered a hand to help her up, guiding her to a nearby chair where she could properly rest her weary body that had likely felt immense emotional, physical, and mental strain these past few days. His voice lowered as he spoke, pulled a chair of his own to sit across from her with a sincere look on his face.

” But one thing I will say is that sadly, it is all very real. While the emotions and the faces we see are fake, the game we all play is very much real. Some may find enjoyment of it, however perverse they may be. Some, like me, simply accept it as it is to be. Finally, there exists a group of people like yourself who find themselves fed up with the charade. Frankly, I don’t blame you one bit.” He leaned back in his chair and thought for a moment before speaking out.

Ari sat back in the chair shifting around uncomfortably as her discomfort and anger became more and more clear.

”So I won’t sit idly by while my sister is tormented by the degradations of our society. How can I help?”

Ari slammed her hands on the arms of the chair, gripping onto them for support as she leaned forward with furrowed brows “ You are just as bad as them!” she said angerly “ Do you think a play is real? You think the actors on the stage believe themselves to be us as they prance around mocking the very society you are so happy to participate in?” Ari scoffed before falling back into the chair with her arms crossed. “You’re a fool to think any of this to be real.” she said under her breath.

Drake calmly took in her words, and with a thinking gesture pondered their meaning. His eyes moved down in thought before he met her sulking gaze once more. ” Well, I would suppose I am a fool then. But does an actor not get their enjoyment from committing to their role? To be so immersed in a role that you can hardly mistake it with reality? It’s hard to say if such dedication to the arts is healthy or prosperous. But the fact of the matter is it all exists. Therefore it is real, in my book.”

Ariella let out a drawn-out sigh as she continued to sit back in the chair with her arms crossed. Her brother really had a knack for twisting words to make his point.

Standing up, the man walked over to his cabinet and began to prepare a few glasses and some aged whiskey from his personal collection. No matter their quarrels, he knew his sister would need a drink. In all honesty, he could use something to lighten his mood as well. He popped the top of the bottle and poured the contents into two clear glasses, with two nearby ice cubes plucked from the tiny ice box that was hidden away. Ari looked up and took notice of the commotion, taking note of the rather full and large crystal decanter. She watched her brother move towards her as he handed her the drink and sat back down. If I am as bad as you say I am, then I hope you do not find this entire interaction pointless. I have my own reservations as I’m sure you guess, but I still want to offer my support where I can.”

Accepting her drink she held the glass in her hand smelling the rather harsh fumes coming from the glass as she swirled it around. Callum seemed to find comfort at the bottom of the glass, perhaps it couldn’t hurt to indulge. Taking a rather large sip, Ariella finished off her glass in one quick motion. Her shoulders buckled up as her face contored into a funny expression as she felt the burn of the liquid as it may its way into her belly creating a warm and comforting heat. “ If this is what makes you happy Drake then I am happy for you… I just…I need a break. Mother has been following me around ever since she found out about Cal-...Prince Callum and I would have really hoped she would have dropped the stuff from the forest but it seems to be a constant concern of hers. I just wish she would forget about it and leave me alone. “ Ari looked down at her glass with a disappointed expression before placing it down onto the nearby table. “ Can you cover for me? Lie and say I left to the ball…I heard about something going on in the woods today and I really wanted to check it out.” she looked at him with a hopeful expression “please?”

Almost immediately Drake had noticed a particular reaction from Ariella that came with some regrets. Perhaps it was a bit bold to introduce such an emotionally unstable woman to one of the first strong drinks she’s had. Nonetheless, he let her finish and promptly hid the bottle back in the cabinet.

”Happy wouldn’t be the word I’d choose. It’s more like I’m…fulfilled. I guess it is just nice to feel like I serve a purpose.” It was then Drake took a moment to reflect on the face staring back at him in what remained of his glass. The man couldn’t help but wonder for a moment. Was this his purpose? What would make him happy? Power? Women? Companionship? Solitude? Many such questions to be asked, but now was not the time.

He took a quick swig of his whiskey, remaining stoic as the liquid smoothly burned along his esophagus. He placed his glass on the counter and returned to his seat across from his sister. ”Very well. I shall tell them you plan to attend as a complete stranger. One who wishes to remain mysterious to fit the theme of the gathering, and that you will behave despite Mother’s misgivings. But you must promise me…” Drake leaned in and with a mixed expression of concern and seriousness, continued. ”Don’t get into any trouble. I know you really like the Prince, but something about him seems….off. Like he’s hiding something beneath the surface. I don’t want you to be caught up in something dangerous. So promise me you’ll be safe.”

Her eyes widened with surprise as she couldn’t believe the words coming from her brothers mouth. Standing to her feet Ari looked down at him “Off!?” her voice raised as she looked around hoping no one heard them. Returning her attention back to her brother as she forced her voice to lower but the frustrations she held were clear on her face. “ I shouldn’t be surprised that you really are just like everyone else. Prancing around like your better then everyone. Sitting here claiming my friend to be off just because he doesn’t fall into the norms of everyone else is rather laughable. Just like how mother believes Lorenzo to be off. Maybe if you actually took a moment to get to know these people you’d see that they are actually very kind and misunderstood. “ Ari marched off towards his desk grabbing his cloak while very carefully grabbing the entire crystal decanter of whiskey and slipping it under the large black heap of fabric. Tossing it over her arm, careful to hide the bottle she turned back to her brother. “ Perhaps you and Princess Camilia are perfect for each other, you both can sit in each other's miserable company. Just as quick as the words left her lips, Ari had already slipped out the side door that led towards the balcony exit.

Drake stood up and paced quickly to the door she just walked out of. In a slightly louder voice, he spoke to her. ”The man was found drunk and beaten in an alley this morning. I know you like him, and I will support you. But don’t blame me for holding reservations.” Then as he thought over those last words, he simply had this to say.

” That’s right. Your miserable older brother who wants to make sure you make it to sunrise without some strange would-be ne’er do well causing unwarranted hatred and mischief to come your way! Powerful people hate that man, Ariella. Like it or not. And if they hate you too there is little I can do to protect you. I do not wish to control your life. I do not wish to control your choice of companionship. I just want you to be safe and happy!” With a slight explosion of volume, the man simply sighed and crossed his arms.

” Go and seek danger if you must. I merely made a request. But it seems no one likes to listen to those nowadays.” He turned and shut the door, leaving his sister to her devices. Drake rifled through the cabinet to pour himself another glass, only to see his whiskey bottle missing. With furrowed brows, he reached instead for some bourbon and poured it into his empty glass. His hands rested on the counter, and all of his weight shifted forward as the emotions from the day began to swell to the surface. All he could do was sit in contemplative silence as the feelings ran their course.

Cyrene had been given a thin white cotton gown to wear under the poncho that the man had provided at least allowing her some dignity in her situation. However, her feet had already started to become sore from the rough terrain on her bare skin.

Night had drawn as the sun set over the horizon. As the light was swallowed by darkness, like a curtain unveiling the secrets it held, Cyrene's pale skin began to decorate with wispy markings that appeared to the naked eye like tattoos that glowed under the moonlight. As soon as the man had noted her markings, it wasn't long until she was being dragged behind him, hands bound by rope as it chafed against her pale skin.

“I am trying to tell you I am no danger to you, sir. “ Cyrene said between gritted teeth as she pulled hard on the rope, her hands shooting back as she jerked him back with force. “I can’t sing for you…OR anyone!” her tone rose with frustration. “I am as worthless as a one pronged fork.” She sat down quickly on the ground, making her dead weight hard to pull in protest. “I will not be your prisoner,” she stated firmly as she started to chew on the rope around her wrists trying to shred the threads.

Eros had remained silent as he stared over his shoulder at the glowing and pleading siren. In some regard he considered himself fortunate, but his former teachers taught him that the best of things often manifested some form of trouble. He clicked his tongue a few times as he shook his head and turned his body around to face Cyrene.

“Lies won't help you, siren. You gave me three untruths so I shall give you three un-untruths… Truths, yes.” He briefly grimaced at his mistake, shaking it off to keep his expression neutral. “One! You are a danger to everyone and anyone who hears your song. Two! You are a siren. The tattoos have removed any doubt in my mind and everyone knows sirens sing but it won't work on me. Not even a little. Three! A one-pronged fork can be of worth. It can still stab things.” He narrowed his eyes slightly. “Four! Four? Four… Hmm, you told four lies.” He shook his head while clicking his tongue again. “You are my prisoner and that's not much you can do about it. I am as strong as two orcs and as stubborn as the oldest of dwarves! I am Eros and I am your captor, siren!” He took a hard step forward. “Walk or be dragged. Make your choice.”
Cyrenes eyes looked up at Eros as she was mid-bite of the thick rope. Her teeth pressed firmly into the twine as she paused. Her brain was rushing with thoughts in a jumbled mess of anxiety. He didn’t look strong, she had seen much larger creatures and men in her travels. The stubborn part she could possibly believe and clearly Eros enjoyed facts over words.

Standing to her feet Cyrene looked at the man with a kind expression, hoping she could some how break through to him. “This..” She said as her thumbs wrapped up under the solid steel circle collar around her neck, pulling it up off of her collar bone. Eros couldn't help but to be intrigued, even if he wanted to, he couldn't hide it as he leaned in. “It's a collar. Sealed with very powerful magic, magic that only one person can unlock.” She paused hoping the information sunk in. “It blocks me from using my voice. If I try, it zaps me with a powerful blast of magic that causes my entire body to shut down temporarily.” She tried to hide the pain from her face as her hands dropped in front of her. “Yes, I am a Siren but I am not worth anything to you. No one will want a voiceless Siren. Just let me go before you waste more of your time…”

“Hmm… Hmmmm…” Eros began to rub his chin. “You would be worth anything to me if what you claim is true…” He raised an eyebrow. “What if we found this one person and forced him to return your song? Hm?”

Normally she had an answer for everything, but she stood there as her fingers dropped from her collar staring in disbelief. Although he would be doing it for his own selfish gain she could possibly be free of him … If he managed to get the collar removed she could easily use her voice to charm her way out of his capture and finally be free. The idea was so strange of a concept…Freedom.

Playing it cool Cyrene offered him a nod “Yes, although he would be rather hard to find…I've been searching for years. He is the only one with a key.” Elrand… she hadn’t dared to think or speak his name in years, her head still ached from the betrayal he caused her.

“Interesting, but why silence a Siren and leave her? Is that collar a punishment for your crimes? Hmm? And you're searching for him? Hmmmmm.” He pondered for a moment and lightly tugged on the rope. It was clear he wanted her to walk but he was not in the mood to make the demand again. Despite calmness while thinking, he was slowly working up a nerve.

Looking around nervously, her eyes meeting back to Eros. She hadn’t spoken about him in so long, even the thoughts he brought back were causing her more pain then she would let him to believe. “A classic tale of a foolish woman falling in love…” she said somberly. Eros narrowed his eyes at the start of her explanation. A siren falling in love? I’d be a fool too if I fell in love with a plum…

“Like you, he wanted wealth, he just wasn’t so forward about it…” her voice dropped as sadness seemed to envelope her words.

“Hm.”

“Wouldn’t you want your chains removed if they were forced upon you? Yes, I am looking for him but only to rid me of this collar… If you help me find him, convince him to have this removed… then I promise you I will go with you willingly and see to it that you are paid at the end.” She extended her hands out to him in hopes she had convinced him enough to free her. If he did, she could run… or…she could finally rid herself of him.

“Hm.”

“My name is Cyrene…and I swear to you Eros that I will stay true to my word.” she kept silent, her eyes watching his face for any sort of hint that this was working.

“Hm… Ehh… Errgh… Meh…” Eros made faces of discomfort as he grunted until he finally let loose a sigh. And then with a grunt and a turn, Eros pulled Cyrene along. With the pull of the rope Cyrene felt her body catch itself as she walked forcefully behind him, Her mind catching up too what had just happened. “I hate when others don't listen. You were supposed to walk and talk. Not talk and talk. Do you think I will just trust a murderer’s words? Do you believe I need your help with negotiating? Your collar is the penance that man placed upon you. This rope is the penance I place upon you.”

Cyrene let out a frustrated sigh, this man clearly had a thick head and talking wasn’t going to get her anywhere. “I hate when others don’t listen too..” She snapped as the slack of rope lassoed around his body. She may not be the best fighter but she had experience in wrestling deer and other strong creatures into submission. As the roped fell around Eros she pulled tightly, causing his feet to buckle. She quickly wrapped what rope she had left around his ankles. Thinking him secured, Cyrene sat at the end of his feet on the ground attempting to break through the ropes once agian with her teeth. She felt the threads shred under her teeth as fibers began to slowly snap apart.

No one would claim her again. No one.

Time had passed but how much time was unknown to Cyrene as her eyes slowly opened. The pain in her head was throbbing, ensuring that she wouldn’t forget what had just happened to her. As her mind came to she realized the netting had been removed and she had been moved away from the water. Her eyes widened as the realization took a moment before she noted she was completely naked. Her body had dried and due to her distance from the water, it had morphed back into its human form.

She swiftly pulled her legs up as she leaned towards them, hiding her chest with her thighs as she curled into a small ball with her arms still behind her back. Cyrene looked around her environment, seeing a tent that was pitched under a large tree. It wasn’t anything fancy, she had certainly seen some grander-looking homes but he seemed to have made it his own with the simple yet useful items littered around.

Her adrenaline had been so active that she hadn’t even taken a moment to register that familiar situation she found herself in. The metal neckless that hung around her neck was a constant reminder. It was made from an elvish steel, completely circular with no sign of a keyhole or break. The neckless was a seamless collar, thin and made from the purest silver. Sadly Cyrene was of no value to anyone in her current state, and even though he would likely see her markings it mattered very little as the Siren had no voice.

“Hey!” Cyrene shouted “ I need… A blanket. Clothing…Something?” She called out hoping that where ever the strange man was he would hear.

Her large, expressive eyes widened in response to the beckoning voice, their vibrant hues drawing in every detail of her surroundings. She conducted a frantic search within the confines of the small nest she had inadvertently fashioned, her gaze eventually returning to the makeshift bed the strangers had been perched upon.

With a hint of reluctance, Sirena's delicate fingers tentatively found their way to the barrel's top, and she gingerly began to push herself upright. Her strikingly bright white hair was the first to emerge, a cascade of wintery locks framing her delicate and frail features. Her sizable, round blue eyes followed suit, pausing for a moment as they locked onto the source of the call.

Laughter filled her mind as voices awakened in response to the intrusion, offering a foreboding chorus of warnings "You're dead," "They will kill you," "Dark Fae... Nasty Fae." These ominous declarations were accompanied by shrill, piercing screams.

Sirena's head tilted slightly downward, an involuntary reaction to the sudden, piercing screeches that had an uncanny way of growing louder as her discomfort intensified and the mystical veil she had painstakingly learned to maintain began to waver. With a gradual, almost graceful motion, Sirena elevated herself to her feet, revealing the diminutive and fragile form of a Dark fairy. Her physical stature was anything but intimidating, yet her enormous, eerie blue eyes held an intense and unwavering fixation on the individual who had summoned her likely causing some discomfort.

She remained silent, steadfast in her resolve to hold back the torrent of anxious thoughts and voices that continued to reverberate within her mind. As if seeking solace, she gently folded her arms in front of her body, fingers intertwining within her grasp. Her lips curved into a half-smile, albeit an oddly contorted and peculiar expression, as her shoulders relaxed, displaying a combination of vulnerability and fake confidence.

”Hello” Sirena mustered in a soft and mousey voice.

Struggling against the treads of the rope again, Cyrene grunted with frustration as she started to realize the familiarity of her situation. The man’s lack of personal space was evident as he pinched her cheek. The natural fire in her belly made her body shake with fury as she felt the sting.

Her body continued to buzz with frustration at her situation as the man seemed to be distracted from talking to his pet. Cyrene’s attention dropped down to her body as she wiggled some more unwilling to give up again as the panic in her chest continued to swell.

However, Cyrene froze as she heard him piece together the old children’s rhyme. Enjoy the mermaids while the sun is bright… Beware the sirens glow at night. She knew the mocking tale all too well. Before she could say anything she felt a sharp pain on her head as the world around her simply faded to black.

The morning had unfolded with a whirlwind of events, and Ariella's experience was nothing short of tumultuous. Despite her fondness for the beach, the persistent sand managed to infiltrate every nook and cranny of her elegant dress, transforming the dressing room's floor into a makeshift shore.

Ariella's mother, however, seemed impervious to the sandy intrusion, preoccupied with scolding the lady's maids, barely acknowledging her daughter's discomfort. This chaotic routine involved a flurry of hair tugging, poking, and prodding, all while adorned with new and opulent makeup. Ariella endured the ordeal like an unyielding statue, arms extended in every direction as she was tugged and adjusted.

As time passed, Ariella's mind transported itself to a place of serenity, mentally retreating to the observation tower where she had shared an evening with her friend.
But as the minutes dragged on, the pain in Ariella's feet intensified, a reminder of just how long she had been standing. It wasn’t long after that the room cleared, and Ariella's arms slumped to her sides as she approached the dressing mirror. Her mother had indeed outdone herself this time, and not in a good way.

...It was horrible

The garish gown sprawled before her was a profusion of pink, littered with excessive ruffles and bows. Its hoop skirt could accommodate an entire family if she so desired. A sense of repulsion twisted Ariella's face as her gaze settled on the absurd puffed sleeves that swallowed her shoulders. This was supposed to be a masquerade ball, yet she felt more like a character from a circus act.

Anxiety seized her as she tugged on her sleeves, struggling to loosen the constricting corset that gripped her chest, her breaths quickening. She felt trapped, her hand resting on her belly in a futile attempt to calm her racing heartbeat. As panic continued to swell, Ariella dashed towards the door, her gown snagging in the frame as she desperately tried to free herself. With an almost superhuman effort, she managed to break free and wobbled towards Drake's room, intent on seeking refuge.

Inside her brother's room, Ariella finally found a sanctuary. Grateful that her brother had already left, she tore into the oppressive fabric with unbridled fury. Her hands ripped off the offensive bows and ruffles, sending them flying in a whirlwind of panic that transformed Drake's room into a graveyard of discarded fabric.

With trembling hands, she fumbled for the corset's laces, frantically undoing them. As the corset loosened and air flowed back into her lungs, Ariella's chest heaved with relieved breaths. Finally freeing herself of the abhorrent gown, she huddled within the hoop of her skirt, clad only in the dress's slip. The room seemed to close in around her as the enormous dome of fabric encased her.

"I can’t do this anymore…" she whispered, her voice a fragile plea of hurt.

Outside the door, Sebastian's keen ear caught the rustling sounds emanating from Drake's room, but Ariella's soft voice on the other side was unexpected. Lady Edwards had rarely ventured into her brother's room without an invitation, not since she was a child. Hearing Ariella's distress, he decided it was prudent to inform Drake of his discovery.

A surge of sheer panic coursed through her, manifesting as a frenzied, desperate struggle. Her body contorted and writhed with unrestrained aggression, a symphony of motion aimed at breaking free from the constricting web of fiber that ensnared her, imprisoning every inch of her body and her tail. Each furious thrash drained her already depleted strength, like a dwindling candle in a dark room.

In the chaos of the moment, her mind became a battleground, a ball of anxiety and fear as she battled the haunting ghosts of her past. The words echoed in her thoughts like a whispered promise, "Don't give up… you won't be a slave again."

Just as she teetered on the brink of surrender to the relentless grip of the net, a sudden, forceful tug sent shockwaves of fear through her, wide eyes straining to fathom what lay beyond her tangled prison. Desperation clawed at her as she sought to propel herself free, but the tenacious webbing only seemed to tighten, each tug dragging her further into the web's suffocating embrace. Her body was yanked and pulled until it finally collided with the shoreline, her head breaking the water's surface.

Drawing in a deep, gasping breath of precious air, she surveyed her surroundings, seeking to make sense of the situation. As Cyrene's entire form emerged from the water, she summoned her final vestiges of strength for one last, futile wriggle against the unyielding snare. Her resplendent tail lay entangled in the mesh of the fishing net, while her arms were pinned against her chest within the constricting cocoon of fishing line.

Amidst the disorienting situation of her capture, the man's voice cut through the chaos, labeling her as the "fish lady." Struggling to catch a glimpse of her captor and his loyal companion, she strained to hear his words, knowing the tales that often accompanied her kind.
Fear seized her heart. If he pieced together her true nature, her runes would be exposed, and this net would be the least of her worries.

Summoning courage, she spoke, her voice gentle and friendly, a tentative attempt to unravel the identity and intentions of this man who now held her fate in his hands. "You do not wish to dine on me, sir, I assure you," she began. "Please, release me from this, and I shall swiftly depart. I'm even prepared to compensate you for the inconvenience of your damaged net." A hopeful smile graced her lips. "I can provide you with coin for your troubles if that would help persuade you." She clenched her jaw in anticipation.

A relentless snowstorm howled through the towering pine trees of the North Pass, creating a mesmerizing dance of swirling flakes in the frigid air. Nestled within the protective embrace of the dense tree line stood a quaint cabin, a rustic creation crafted from aged logs meticulously stacked to form a humble, yet inviting rectangular-shaped home. Gracefully adorning its front, a simple porch offered shelter from the relentless storm, where a handcrafted rocking chair swayed gently to and fro in defiance of the fierce, snowy winds. From the cabin's stout chimney, a plume of smoke rose into the snowstorm, the streams of smoke twisting and disappearing into the white abyss.

As the fire crackled merrily in the heart of Cyrene's Home, its warm, comforting sounds reverberated through the cozy interior, casting a welcoming aura that beckoned travelers to seek refuge within its walls. However, this home was so far in the wilderness very few ventured into its domain.

Inside her simple home, built by her very own hands, Cyrene rushed around finishing the remaining of her affairs. Having spent the early morning delivering the pelts, meats, and various items she had crafted to the locals in town it was finally time to get ready for her latest adventure.

For the last 10 years Cyrene had been living, but more so, hiding in the woods of the North Pass. Every few weeks Cyrene would venture into town with various goods that she had acquired. This week was particularly a hearty bounty which was welcomed as Cyrene had a long travel ahead of her. Cyrene had ridden a carriage into town towards the main market area, her wagon filled to the brim with dried and skinned pelts, tools, and sometimes furniture that she made. The harsh storm that had hit the North pass for about a week now caused the visibility to be terrible. However, Cyrene's eyes were sharper than most and thankfully didn’t cause any problems for her but the townspeople found themselves struggling for their basic needs. They were so grateful to receive her wagon of supplies that it was gone in nearly minutes barely having a chance to look back to see what was left.

She never asked for payment, much of the things she made or caught would go to waste or simply allowed her something to pass the time. Cyrene already felt indebted to the North Pass people for their hospitality in keeping her sheltered in their woods. Allowing her to keep in hiding away from…Him.

As the morning sun broke the horizon Cyrene knew it was time to go. She would only have so much new daylight to make it to the cliff edge near her home. She’d need to get there without anyone noticing. Thankfully with the storm, her location and the time of day it was unlikely anyone would notice. She knew that there were rumors circling about what Cyrene truly was, if anyone were to find out she would be in danger and the piece of jewelry around her neck would be the least of her concerns.

Cyrene grabbed her belongings and started to trek off towards the cliff edge. She had purposely built on the location due to the ease of location for her. The large cliff edge hung over the sea allowing an easy drop into the frigid cold waters. As Cyrene approached, she began stripping off one layer of her clothing after the other. The cold air stung her skin as she powered through the pain. Each article of clothing was carefully tossed in a small hutch she had built. It had a matching set on the other side of the island for when she would return.

Reaching the edge of the cliff, completely naked in the middle of a snow storm and without hesitation, she jumped off the edge. Her body curving down as her arms stretched out to the side moving to the front of her head for the perfect diving form. As the water swallowed her it caused her true form to be unveiled. As each part of her body hit the water, dark navy blue scales appeared. First, small groups of scales clustered over her arms then as her shoulders dipped in, scales appeared like pauldrens over her shoulders. As her torso hit the water, the scales appeared over her breasts trickling down her belly in a thin cluster until they branched out creating a large tail that continued to grow as her legs finally cleared the surface. Her tail was made of the same dark blue scales with large fins that broke off into thin deep purple pieces. They looked like thin pieces of fabric floating with ease in water. A large fin also ran down her butt towards where her thighs would be, matching the beauty of her tail.

Cyrene was a siren. Every so often she had to return to the water after being on the mainland for so long, if she failed to do so it could cause serious illness and soon death. Normally Cyrene would swim around the North Pass, cleaning up various things that fell in the ocean while enjoying her time, however, this time was slightly different. Cyrene planned on setting off towards Roshmi City. She enjoyed watching the boats coming in and out of the harbor, the sound of the bustling city, and the warm waters. The journey would be long and Cyrene would not arrive until sometime in the evening, just in time to catch the morning deliveries. Once night hit, the sign of the siren from her people would appear. Her tail would light up with shimmering scales luminescent in the dark waters. The runes along her tail were ancient symbols telling the story in a beautiful artistic design. Sadly, it was well-known sirens from different families held their siren mark in various fashions, and for Cyrene, it was all too visible at night. She couldn’t help but wonder if that was how her mother was found. She was too young to remember.

Slipping the thoughts from her mind, Cyrene swam through the cold and dark waters. Hours had gone by but it felt like minutes. She felt at peace in the water, it was like a recharge to her soul swimming through the depths. However, it brought back memories…bad ones. The collar around her neck floated around, crashing into her skin every so often with each move. It was a constant reminder of the castration of her voice. She missed singing. It was a release for her, an escape that she could never explain. Like breathing air, it was just a part of who she was. Then someone took it from her. Ripping away parts of her identity to claim for his own as if her body were a trophy. The thought angered her. She would never again be someone's property.

As her mind twisted with thoughts, she wasn’t paying attention. Suddenly she found herself entangled in strings of cotton as her tail whipped around her body reacted causing her to get even more twisted and tangled. It took her only a moment to realize, she was stuck in a fishing net…..

Party.

A social gathering of invited guests, typically involving eating, drinking, and entertainment.

The Damien Estate Masquerade Party. The grand event of the evening fit so perfectly for what was to come. What was meant to be a themed fun-filled gathering, was nothing more than a boost to a single man's ego and popularity. A game with a predetermined winner. His moves were already laid out, prepared with the thoroughness of a psychopath.

But did he consider the price? Did Violet's father think of the dangers of inviting falseness into his home. To gather, drink, eat, and be entertained amongst his that was so fragile underneath the surface of the visage they displayed. A visage that was purely just another pretty mask of his masquerade party.

Inside her moonlit chamber, an air of sadness enshrouded Violet, like a spectral veil woven from strands of her pain. A black lace string wound intricately around the back of her head, her hair pulled back tightly away from her face and shoulders in a beautiful braid that twisted into a bun. A mask hand crafted from the plumage of raven feathers adorned her face. Her crimson eyes shinning from behind the mask.

Her attire whispered of dark beauty, a testament to her father's ostentatious intentions. A gown of onyx silk clung to her form, its fabric cascading like liquid darkness, pooling at her feet. The grandeur of her collar was a profusion of feathers that sprang forth like wings, framing her features with an eerie elegance that bordered on the surreal. Although her father’s gift was wonderful, Violet couldn’t help but question the intention behind his actions.

Yet, behind this façade of extravagance and beauty lay a monster. Violet's heart thrummed with a dissonant truth. Her father's lavish indulgence may have cloaked her in finery, but it could not obscure the monster that festered beneath the surface. Unseen by the world, a hurricane of turmoil churned within her soul, a maelstrom of emotions that continued to build each hour that passed.

The frigid night air played upon her skin, a symphony of prickling sensations that whispered of the world beyond her cage. A subtle curve graced her lips, a peaceful feeling tugging at her heart as she yearned for the view from her balcony, where once she had been able to peer upon the beautiful night sky. Yet, this simple pleasure now eluded her, eclipsed by an insidious craving that gnawed at her core.

In the veiled night, Violet stood on her balcony bathing in the light of the moon. As the night enveloped her in its darkness, Violet reached into the pocket of her dress pulling out the letter she had received earlier in the day. Opening it up she held the letter against the balcony; the blurred scribbles of her friends’ writing was a much needed reminder that she wasn't alone. A quaint distraction that took her mind and senses elsewhere. Safety and caution could not reach her in this momentary bliss.

Who knew that Roman would be such the accomplice to her complacency this night? A sudden whistle of wind filled the air was like a signal of the perfect time to-

Violet felt a swift pressure wrap around her throat and head. Her body was being pulled back from the balcony's edge, away from the moonlight that lustered her alabaster complexion. Violet's trembling hands clutched at the arm coiled menacingly around her delicate neck. Her heart pounded like a wild drum, reminding her of the growing sense of dread within her.

In a desperate frenzy, Violet's nails, long and sharp as razors, tore into the arm that sought to claim her life. The tearing sound of fabric being savagely shredded echoed in her bedroom as her cries of help muffled from the pressure around her neck. But no matter how fiercely she clawed and scratched, the grip on her neck showed no signs of relenting. Deep cuts from her claws digging into the strangers arm as blood appear to drip onto her pale skin.

The air around her became suffocating, each empty breath a torturous reminder of the tightening grip that held her. She fought with every ounce of her waning strength, a primal instinct for survival warring against the person.

With each passing moment, the darkness seemed to grow around her. Violet's defiant struggle was now veering into a hopeless battle against whoever had her. Her consciousness wavered, her vision blurred even more, and the world around her began to twist and warp. And then there was darkness. Silence. Nothing more to feel. Bliss twisted.

As the darkness took her, Violet felt a sense of calm wash over her. Her body collapsed limp in the embrace of the stranger.

Finally…

Taken from her peace and in moments from her home, Violet faded into the abyss of night: her captor, a man wearing a black mask decorated with two golden horns of a ram.

The only sign left of the strange visitor was the crumpled up letter from Roman, laying in the middle of Violets bedroom floor with tiny droplets of blood decorating the once pristine paper.
