Can't sleep. I want to, but if I sleep I move and if I move I disturb my cat who is lying underneath my legs and blankets like its a tent...If I didn't love her this would be incredibly vexing :D

Why is it that when one wants to sleep, they're not in a socially acceptable position to do so, but when they are they have an intense need to do literally anything else?

Hi everyone, I'm Unkown and welcome to my profile!
A few things prospective partners should know about me:
I love superhero, fantasy, supernatural, slice-of-life, romance, mystery, isekai, medieval, horror and modern roleplays. Sci-fi, apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic and mech rp's are alright, but I wont actively go seeking those out unless the story-line and other characters really interest me.
Okay, posted! Sorry it took a while, my parents had renovations done to their house, so I got roped in and it ate up almost all of my free time! ^^; I'm ready and ably to follow through on a slightly faster posting schedule now though!
Current Location: North Caves Current Activity: Gathering green-streaked chunks in cave and talking with Lazash @Crusader Lord and Esfir @ERode while exploring the caves and acting as bait for Akeno @King Cosmos, Gren @Lucius Cypher and Grunthor @Kazemitsu. Almost as soon as the spear was launched the beetle’s attack hit the ground, it’s force knocking Vola off of her feet, the smoulders landing on the edges of her clothes, threatening to light the garments on fire. A slew of mental curses and screams ran through her mind as she quickly crawled towards the nearest cover herself, before frantically starting to pat at the embers, going so far as to use her spit to try and put them out. She’s seen pictures burn injuries before and she does not want to risk going through that, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the quality of healthcare in this world.
Once the threat of a fire has been successfully eliminated, Vola would risk a peak out from her cover. A relieved sigh escaping her when she saw that Lazash was unharmed during the blast, which quickly transformed into a victorious smile when she saw the beetle shish-cabob against the wall. Sure, the thing was still alive and kicking – it might have some relation to cockroaches…those nasty buggers are annoyingly resistant to death as well – but it’s movement was restricted now, which’ll work in their favour to try and take it down. She’ll definitely have to thank Gren again later, she definitely wouldn’t have been able to pull off a hit like that with just her little stick. Unfortunately, that smile was swiftly wiped off of her face when the beetle started glowing once again for a counter strike, clearly it wasn’t as happy with their small victory as she was.
Reaching for the spear-launcher and another spear to reload it, she glanced over to the other girl to see if they could try and figure out some kind of strategy. From the look in her eye though, it seemed as if Lazash already had something in mind and Vola would soon find out what. With zero hesitation, before the beetle had a chance to release the fire that was building, the other girl hit it with a Fire Ball. What ensued was both the single most terrifying moment of her life as well as the most exhilarating as the world erupted into flames around her. The heat of the explosion was unlike anything she ever felt before, and the sound of it passing between them was like thunder in her eardrums.
After what felt simultaneously like both an eternity and barely a few moments at all, the explosion ended, leaving just the two girls in the returned darkness of the cave along with some rubble that was knocked loose. A flash of worry passed through Vola for the others outside, hopefully the flames didn’t manage to reach them outside. Glancing around to view the damages, Vola was happy to notice that the beetle was definitely dead and gone at this point, unfortunately as she approached where it was standing and looked around, she saw that it appeared as if the spiteful bug took her spear along with it.
It was at this point, after she had verified that there was no more danger, that the reality of the situation fully hit her, her shoulders starting to shake with repressed laughter. Biting her tongue to keep the giggles in check only seemed to be semi effective, the occasional laugh slipping out. They almost died. They almost died in a fiery inferno trying to kill an overgrown cockroach, and it was amazing! Now don’t get Vola wrong, it was traumatizing and terrifying, but it was also exhilarating…is it wrong that she almost want’s to do it again? Yeah…probably…she’ll examine that particular thought tonight when she has some privacy for a proper hysterical freak-out.
In the meantime, she had to stay present and in the moment and focus on her surroundings. The beetle had been well and thoroughly blown to kingdom-come, so it was doubtful that they’d be able to salvage too much, so she turned her attention instead to the debris, maybe there would be a particularly sharp rock that can be used as a weapon or a tool? It was then that she saw the strange green-streaked rocks. Could these be some of the ore that she and Gren heard about? Guess that beetle was worth more than just an adrenaline rush after all. Getting down to it, Vola started the process of sifting through the debris and gathering as many of the chunks as she could carry, noting that Lazash was doing the same after the other girl finished gathering the sad remains of the cockroach.
After they were done, Vola helped Lazash clear a small opening, and plopped herself down across from the other girl. They both could use a breather after that. The lack of future Fire Bolts wasn’t all that surprising news, they were still Runts, this was their first hunting trip, unlimited Fire Bolts is an unreasonable expectation. However they would need to be more careful from now on if they were to proceed forward. It goes to reason that the creatures would only get more dangerous the deeper in they go. ”That’s fair, you already did a lot with them, those mushrooms and the bug would have been a lot harder to deal with otherwise, so just rest up for a little bit. We’ll just be more careful for now.”
The lack of an intact kill was a little disheartening, but there was still a good amount of daylight left, and considering that they just escaped death by the skin of their teeth…Vola’s spirit remained reasonably high. ”There’s still some time to find something, besides, at least we’re still alive and in possession of all of our limbs.” Damn, the urge to laugh was back again…
Biting down on her tongue hard, she distracted herself by taking inventory of the items in her possession, pausing at the remaining Tungem leaves, grabbing them and offering them to the other girl with a smile. ”One of the mushrooms got you earlier, right? Is it still bothering you? I have some leaves, they make good bandages in a pinch.”
It was at that point that Esfir reappeared, entering the cave and addressing Vola and Lazash. Vola doesn’t know why, but she felt a little like she did whenever she’d get caught in the act by one of her parents. That feeling was quick to pass though, as the other runt asked about what happened here and whether it was their magic or a creature. Glancing between Lazash and the bug’s final resting place, Vola responded, a very small laugh escaping with the words before she could stop it and she quickly tried to put a serious expression on her face. She really hopes that she’ll outgrow the stress-laughing at some point, the last thing she wants is to look like she doesn’t take things seriously because of it… ”I guess you could say that it was a bit of both?”

Current Location: North Caves Current Activity: Trying not to get eaten by mushrooms or squished like bugs by a bug with Lazash @Crusader Lord while exploring the caves and acting as bait for Akeno @King Cosmos, Gren @Lucius Cypher and Grunthor @Kazemitsu. Vola wasn’t sure why she was surprised. This is another world filled with fantastical creatures and monsters and magic! Everything is so much different than her original world, including the plants. Hell, the Tungem tree was proof enough of the differences in flora already! Maybe it’s because they had the good luck to only encounter non-violent, docile plants so far that she didn’t have her guard up? Maybe she was just being stupid, especially when you consider the inherent danger even normal mushrooms possess with their potential poisonous nature? Whatever the case, she was caught completely off guard when the tine purple fungi launched their attack.
Coughing slightly, she immediately brought one of her arms up to cover her mouth and tried to limit her breathing after using it to store the offenders. There’s no telling what long-term effects the spores may inflict, but hopefully this may mitigate the damage some? Unfortunately, her efforts immediately went to waste as the mushrooms’ unplucked compatriots tried to avenge their buddies, as barbed, tongue like tendrils shot out towards them, completely cutting off Lazash’s attempted warning.
It was all Vola could do to dodge out of the way of the tendrils a hissed “Shit!” escaping her at a particularly close call. Immediately, her mind went into overdrive as she tried to analyse everything about the situation, looking for any weak spots or patterns in the attacks of the mushrooms. She could try to stab the shrooms with the spears, but getting close would be a problem and the tendrils aren’t really giving her a clear shot, so as to not waste any ammo, she’s putting that down as plan B, simply focussing on whacking away the tendrils that come to close with her loaded spear-thrower. As for pattern of attack…not all of the tendrils seem to be targeting them, some seem to be going for random rocks. Why though? The attacks are to precise to be random? Maybe…those rocks are close to where the spores exploded, could that be acting as some sort of homing beacon?
Before Vola could find a way to test her hypothesis or find a way to put it to good use, Lazash made a counterstrike in the form of Fire Bolt. As the flames hit the fungus the whole area exploded in a flash of light as wave of heat washed over her body, reducing their fungal attackers to black shrivelled husks. Blinking her eyes quickly, to try to readjust to the darkness of the cave once more. Breathing out a sigh, Vola gave Lazash a smile and said quietly “Nice shot.”
Unfortunately, any relief that she felt at the disposal of the fungal menaces was short lived as the overgrown cockroach decided it wanted to play as well. Having learned from the exploding mushrooms at least, the second that Vola saw the bug’s thorax start to expand, she whispered a hurried “Find cover!” to Lazash before raising her still-loaded spear-thrower and launched the spear as hard as she could towards the beetle, just as it shot a second bolt of light towards them. Sparing a split second glance to see if Lazash got to safety, Vola would then dive for cover as well. Hopefully she at least drew the attention to herself by throwing the spear so that the other girl would be less of a target...

Current Location: North Caves Current Activity: Acting as bait for Akeno @King Cosmos, Gren @Lucius Cypher and Grunthor @Kazemitsu by exploring the caves with Lazash @Crusader Lord while keeping an eye out for anything useful. Vola smiled gratefully at Gren as she accepted the Spear Thrower. “Thank you, Gren, I appreciate this.” Testing the weight, Vola gave a few experimental swings to get used to the movement while listening attentively and contributing to the planning where she could. The cave was a huge unknown at this point, and she was really nervous about going in there, but once she commits to something, she follows through, so she tried to channel all of her nervous energy more productively, by practicing a little with the Spear-Thrower, as well as helping the others make preparations for the exterior where they needed it. When it was finally time for her and Lazash to enter the cave, Vola had managed to more or less get rid of the nerves and turn it into something more akin to…a grim determination? Eh. Something along those lines anyway.
Entering the darkness, Vola was on high alert, scanning the surroundings closely for any signs of movement, danger or other signs of anything living here, while simultaneously keeping an eye out for anything useful like special plants, or the ore that she and Gren had originally planned to collect. Spotting some mushrooms growing by the cave entrance, Vola followed Lazash’s example and collected a few. They might end up coming in handy and even if they don’t, it’s always handy to learn more about the flora in your world.
It didn’t take long before they were moving once more, heading ever deeper into the cave. The journey uninterrupted so far. Vola wasn’t sure how she felt about that. On the one hand, still being alive and uneaten by cave-critters was amazing, but on the other hand, the longer they go without encountering danger, the more that the suspense she’s currently feeling seems to grow as well. Like as if whatever’s in here will become more dangerous the longer they go with encountering it. The calm before the storm. Encountering the bug was almost a relief, for all that it almost made her gag as well. While it was much bigger than any bug ever had any right being, it didn’t seem outright hostile, so Vola didn’t make the first move either, following Lazash’s lead and holding. That doesn’t mean that she is at all relaxed. Oh no. The Spear-Thrower was loaded and ready in her hand, ready to fire the second either Lazash gives the signal or that that thing makes a move to attack them.

Okay runts, what kind of preparations do we want to make outside the cave before the fight?
We could all just lie in wait and ambush whatever's coming out, and that's probably what I'll do with Akeno since she doesn't have any expertise in this area, but if anyone has any ideas for traps, tripwires or anything else then she can help with that.
Well, since it'll probably take too long for more sophisticated traps like a pit with spikes at the bottom, any traps we can set will likely be very simple and will probably depend on what we will even be able to find in the area. I like the idea of using vines to make a tripwire, but depending on if we'll be able to find any, we might also be able to use a long stick/branch for the job as well? Otherwise, the only other, kind-of feasible trap idea that I have will likely result in a large forest fire, so it's probably best to avoid that one. Maybe us runts could try to cover ourselves with the Rotleaves to mask our scent? Maybe the ones staying outside could also try to work on some kind of camouflage to further surprise our prey? What do the rest of you think?
<Snipped quote by King Cosmos>
Well, I will be posting tomorrow with Lazash who is one of the two inside of the cave right now. Likely going to use her identification skill to try to see what this thing is. Otherwise whether the thought of 'fire bolt go boom' or something else occurs will be up to her thinking on the matter. Because she and Vola are only so far into the cave thus far, and all we've seen is a big bug.
I'll start working on my post tomorrow as well. We should also try to grab some of those mushrooms. They're either edible, delicious, have medicinal properties or they might be used to make poison. Speaking of the bug though, do we attack, or should we hold off for now to try and see if any other critters are living there?
Current Location: North Caves Current Activity: Strategizing with Akeno @King Cosmos, Helping Gren @Lucius Cypher, Grunthor @Kazemitsu, and Lazash @Crusader Lord and searching the surroundings for vines. Mentioned Agar @ReusableSword As the notification popped up infront of Vola’s eyes she gave a considering hum. So that’s how the skill accumulation works. Interesting. There are other skills available as well, however they would require eating more and she was unsure of how long they had to continue lingering here.…Sighing slightly, she decided to put off choosing ‘Slash’ for now. Firstly because she was curious about what the other options were, but also because she was unsure whether or not there’s a limit to the amount of skills they can get and if there was, she’d like to try and get some that will work well with Rune Scribe. In other news, while not exactly what she had in mind, the Bone Shards that she made turned out pretty well!
She’s also sure that the Rotleaves and Seedpods will come in handy! What really caught her attention though, was the Petrified Fragment…what could possibly cause this kind of phenomenon? Magic? A skill? Another creature? Nature? None of the books she read in her past life offers an explanation unless she’s willing to consider a basilisk/medusa who affects plants, but she hasn’t reached that point yet. She desperately wanted to investigate further, but the group was moving on, so it was with a mournful heart that she simply pocketed a piece and followed, promising herself that she’d try to ask some of the older orcs about this back at camp. There should at least be one who’d be willing to show off their vast knowledge to a starry-eyed runt?
Meeting the lone Runt on the way to the North Caves was unexpected, but not nearly as much as the words that came out of his mouth. Unless she was mistaken, he had just made a legitimate Shrek reference! Does this mean that he was reborn as well? Were there others? Were any of the Runts she was currently with reborn as well? Was Gren reborn as well? WHY DIDN’T SHE CONSDER THIS POSSIBILITY EARLIER???!!!! Unfortunately, the lone runt didn’t seem to be all that eager to join them and her current group was already moving out, so there wasn’t a lot of time for her internal debates. At the very least she should say something so that he’d know that he wasn’t alone. Giving him a slight smile she responded quietly “They’re probably at the swamp, though I also heard them talking about onions and layers the other day.” That said she gave a friendly nod before following after the others once more.
The North Caves were suitably impressive and Vola took a second to take in its appearance as the leader of the group that she and Gren joined departed. A little strange, but understandable, Vola was feeling a little apprehensive herself just looking at the cave’s dark looming mouth. Thankfully, she was swiftly distracted by a notification telling her that she gained a level and after a few minutes of deliberation, she decided to increase her MP since she might have to use it when utilising her skill later on. That done, she placed her full attention on the others as they started strategizing the best way to approach the cave.
Akeno and Lazash both raised good points and had some solid ideas for the cave that Vola readily agreed with. The only problem came with who would go with Lazash to draw the creatures out. Gren’s arm was still injured and the other male orc – Grunthor, had suffered a head injury earlier as evidenced by all the blood, so she didn’t feel right making them go in and she had a feeling that Akeno would have more of an impact out here during a fight than she would, which only left Vola herself. That honestly scared her a little, but she can’t just mooch off of the others. Vola needs to earn her keep! Taking a subtle breath to compose herself, she gave a bright smile and raised her hand.
“I’ll go with you! I can whistle really loudly, which should travel nicely in the cave, and maybe we can use some of the Rotleaves and their seedpods to also mess with their sense of smell to disorient them further?” Giving a considering look at the size of the cave opening, Vola gave a quick scan of the clearing for anything that resembles a vine. “Do you think there are any vines nearby? If we find any you guys could stretch it in front of the cave and we can use it to trip or tangle up whatever heads outside?”
