Okay, offence taken. My country may be run by socialists, but most of them bathe regularly. I'll hear none of this talk of us being "filthy", from a man who's country invented Rednecks.

Keep it in the family, am I right Billybob? The family that lays together stays together ;)

As for the bill to change the national anthem, it's absolutely ridiculous. Most Canadians are against it. That's why the government refuses to put it up to a referendum (where all Canadian citizens actually get to vote on it). They never mentioned this during the election. A single feminist MP decided to seize the opportunity, and start this whole thing out of the blue, and the Liberals and CBC are just running with it. I don't expect it to go through. If it does, I'm sure there'll be a lot of protest from the Conservatives. The Conservatives might even make it part of their election platform to change it back.

Edit: The thing about Canada is, we tend to vote for Left-Wing parties in national elections (maybe because our Conservative party is so obviously corrupt, and guilty of election fraud), but whenever any issue goes to referendum, Right-Wingers win.

Isn't the Canadian national anthem just "O Canada" chanted continuously?

Oh yes, but it's a very manly chant. They're trying to make us all sing it in a higher voice.

that sounds hot tho

Semi-seriously, I think,I'd be disappointed in everyone involved. Like if you are socialist you shouldn't be wasting your political capital on a song you annoy elementary school music students with, and it shows a lack of a real platform if conservatives could run on an anthem ticket.

If I were president of the US and someone put a put a bill on my table proposing we make "Hollaback girl" the national anthem, I'd sign it just to get it out of the way so we can get back to growed up stuff.

I remember there was a petition to change the national anthem to "Party in the USA", it'd either go terrifically horrible or horribly terrific.

might as well. what we have now is a reminder of that time we got ourselves in a really poorly thought out war and had to be saved by Baltimore of all fucking places.

At least it was some where relevant like Baltimore instead of Nebraska or Wyoming or something.

Well, we are talking about Canadian liberals here. We're all socialists. Our "Conservative" Party is Pro-Choice, and believes in Socialized Single-Payer Medicare (à la Bernie Sanders).

Semi-seriously, I think,I'd be disappointed in everyone involved. Like if you are socialist you shouldn't be wasting your political capital on a song you annoy elementary school music students with, and it shows a lack of a real platform if conservatives could run on an anthem ticket.

We are the nation of petty bullshit. The main issue of the last election wasn't the economy, or the environment, or immigration. It was whether or not Muslim women had to remove their Niqabs before voting (because it covers the face).

Our Prime Minister is the guy who released a public apology for Canada refusing a boatload of Indian immigrants, who were trying to enter the country illegally, A HUNDRED YEARS AGO... When our last Prime Minister already apologized for that same incident ten years ago.

I gotta say, Canada's education system pays no attention to America's... War of Independence? Could someone explain this to me?

And what does your national anthem, "America, Fuck Yah", have to do with Baltimore?

As a Conservative voter and someone who utterly despises the policies and person of Justin Trudeau, it doesn't really bother me much. The new, gender neutral lyrics are apparently closer to the song's original English lyrics than the current ones. I believe the story there is that a reference to the country's "sons" in particular was added for World War I.

At the very most this is still less egregious than the blatant historical revisionism pressed on to Canada by Justin's father, Pierre, when he was Prime Minister. I would much prefer this to be Justin's worst attack on Canada's history, rather than renaming national holidays or perhaps trying to abolish the monarchy.

>Calling liberals socialist

The social-democratic NDP voted for the changes as well.

and then Francis Scott Key watches the battle, writes a poem about it, the poem gets paired up with a drinking song, and that is how the National Anthem was born.

perhaps trying to abolish the monarchy.

What does the Monarchy even do for Canada, aside from creating that "Loser country that won't move out of Mom's basement" effect? I mean, surely you could be part of the Commonwealth without having to say that some British celebrity is your de jure Head of State.

"The uploader has not made this video available in your country."

Fuck you too, America.

The monarchy does jack-shit. We like keeping the Queen around because we prefer to think of ourselves as British-esque, not like those savages across our southern border. Conservatives, especially, have an obsession with putting the Queen on everything. One of Trudeau's first actions, after the election, was to remove a ton of the portraits of the Queen that our last PM had put all over Parliament. Not even joking.

I have heard stuff like that from other parts of the Commonwealth, and I admit it's something my Americaness makes impossible for me to wrap my head around. Like, the thing you are most proud of is another country's tourist attraction? And why would take pride in the fact you used to not even be a country? It's a little depressing. I mean, come on Canada, you can do stuff for yourself now. Put poutine on the Canadian dollar! That's yours. You made it. Take a little pride in yourselves. You won't be in the history books 1000 years down the line with an attitude like that.

As for the holiday thing, I don't know what you guys would want to change in Canada, but for the US I am totally on board with renaming Columbus Day. That guy was a fuck. My general rule with whether this works historically is "Did the people back then also think this person was a fuck", just to make sure we aren't judging historical people with modern views. Since Columbus was thrown in prison for being a cruel fuck by the 16th century Spanish of all goddamn people, I think we can safely damn him and give the holiday to somebody else.

Nikolai Tesla day?
Robert Goddard day?

While I'm short on names on the account of not wanting to think very hard when I should be winding down to go to sleep, we could presumably find another scientific or exploratory name to replace Columbus given last I checked that was the purpose of Colombus Day; some sort of celebration of expanding horizons in exploration, science, and the fact the Americas exist as a Westernized identity.
