Birth year doesn't really make a difference unless you want to use that information to make a natal chart. I particularly enjoy making natal charts as they tell you other information about the circumstances of your birth and seem to be weirdly accurate according to some believers. Basically: it tells you much more than just your sun sign tells you alone.
Anyway, you may be surprised to learn you are not just a Cancer, but actually a Cancer-Gemini cusp! Unlike the other Cancer-Geminis I've read so far, you're closer to Cancer than to Gemini. Perhaps people often comment that you have a good sense of humor? That's a trait that is commonly displayed by this cusp. As you are a cusp, you're technically compatible with air, earth, fire AND water, though not all of those are recommended. For you, my personal recommendations would be Leo, Scorpio and Capricorn.
