Director’s Office
6:32 PM

The man went over the list again, for what must have been the hundredth time that night. On the plethora of illuminated monitors before him were dossiers, each labeled with a roman numeral and accompanied by a picture of each subject. While there were a staggering number of these files open across his screens, they hardly scratched the surface of the number that they had on file. As of the latest “batch,” their numbers now stood at 255, although only a fraction were ready for the trials that stood before them.

And as the head researcher and acting director, it had fallen on him to hand pick which of his creations, his Godslayers, were to set out the following morning. A weary hand traced through black hair, which was streaked with mottles of gray that had arrived far ahead of schedule, as an equally exhausted sigh escaped him. The day had disappeared all too quickly as he attempted to draw up squads, but now indecision and doubt wracked the man.

Of all the Godslayers, not even twenty of them were being considered for their first operations. No matter how much time and energy was put forth, it was impossible to ascertain exactly why each successive generation of AG’s were weaker than the last. There was variance of course, but as it stood, the only ones that were truly ready for combat were the ones on his list. The consequences were far too dire to risk losing any one of them due to his incompetence. But it was far too late to turn back now, so with steadier hands, the doctor began typing…

This is Doctor Raymond Verner.

Those of you that are receiving this message will be expected to report to the Auditorium at 6:00 AM sharp. There you will be split into your teams and be briefed on your first mission. No more training, no more practice, from here on out the real fighting begins. Work with your teammates and protect one another other at all costs.

Failure is not an option.

It wasn’t an incredibly long message, but Verner had never been known for rousing speeches. Still, it got the job done so he didn’t concern himself with it all that much. Satisfied, the doctor sent out the message and leaned back in his chair, his hands supporting the back of his head. It was almost difficult to believe that it had already been fifteen years since he first embarked on this path. But yet, here he was on the day before the fruits of his labor would be measured and weighed.

“I can only hope that it will be enough.”

The Auditorium
The following morning, 5:45 AM

While AG HQ housed many facilities, few traded in function for form quite like the Auditorium. It was sleek and stylish, much unlike just about any other room that had been designed with a keen sense of pragmatism in mind. Nevertheless, both Godslayers and personnel are trickling in to gather for the day’s briefing. Few had really been in this room before today, as its true purpose was only now being realized.

Whether you have been here for an hour already or are still just waking up, it is clear that today will not be like any other. Today you will come one step closer to slaying a God.

Ai & Yuu

In one of the many resting rooms of the facility, a duo resided within, both full of excitement and anxiety. The light thud of flesh on fabric echoed through the spartan-like room, clenched fists striking a punching bag suspended in the middle of the room rapidly, said object showing signs of constant wear from repeated routines such as this. A duo of light bulbs lit the entire room, bathing over a single, king-sized bed, the personal terminal that came with every room, a cabinet, an oak table with two chairs, the aforementioned punching bag, a picture, and the two beings that existed inside. The one object of note, the framed photo, was of a beautiful landscape, full of nature's bounty and the clear blue sky. The picture was propped on top of the table, facing towards the two entities inside as if watching over their actions.

Sweat dripped from beneath an expanse of auburn hair, dark emerald eyes blazing with intent as their owner struck her opponent with a powerful haymaker, causing the chain that held the bag aloft creak with strain as the training apparatus swung farther than a normal human was meant to cause it to, nearly parallel to the ground. With a quiet exhale, Ai finished her physical maintenance, stopping the swing of the bag with one hand as she catches a small towel and water bottle with the other, thrown towards her by none other than her sister: Yuu. Said blonde was positively beaming, clapping her hands together with a genuine smile as her sister cooled down from the workout, Little Red wiping any excess sweat as she subtly shifted with embarrassed pride, taking a large gulp of the water handed to her.

It had only been twenty minutes since the call for a meeting within the Auditorium, and yet the Gemini Siblings have been unable to settle after the announcement. Despite Ai's usual apathy for most events, the excitement that coalesced their connected psyche was not entirely Yuu's. This would be their first mission outside of the compound, their first experience with the real experiences of being Godslayers. It would be the first time either of them had seen the outside world in over a decade.

For the first time, they would finally meet their fellow Godslayers.

Naturally, Ai wasn't as gung-ho as her sister might be when it came to the latter of the experiences, "making friends" as Yuu liked to call it, but the prospect of truly fighting for what she was made for filled her with anticipation, and the determination not to fail. Glancing at her sister, the auburn haired girl visibly tensed as she thought of what might happen out in the field. Even after all the training, the blood, sweat, and broken bodies that led up to this moment, she still felt uncomfortable with her sister taking up the shield. In all honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that Yuu was essential to her fighting-style and powers in general, she wouldn't want to bring the platinum-blonde onto the battlefield at all.

As if reading her thoughts, which actually wasn't as far fetched as one might think, Yuu merely gave her sister a look, steeling her gentle smile into a stubborn frown. The slight wave-like motion of her hand notifying the emerald-eyed teen of her sister's distress. At once, she understood. Even if there was be no meaning to her presence, which there was, her sister would stand by her side to the end despite everything that could happen. She would not abandon the one true friend she's had her entire life. Softening her own gaze, Ai gave her sister an indistinct nod, the small action somehow perking up the blue-eyed teen and causing her to glow with happiness. There wouldn't be any more hesitation. Suddenly feeling reinvigorated, she handed back both bottle and towel, raising her fists to resume her exercise. And, after a moment of silence, Yuu stood up as well, changing from her dress to a more appropriate black shirt and breeches, coming to stand along side her sister as they engaged their static foe. There would be no sleep for them for a long while, energized by their trust in one another and anticipation for what came ahead...

...Only to sleep in and nearly miss the meeting. Stumbling in at six nearing the next minute, the two sisters hurried into the room with uncombed hair and hastily worn clothes, both donning their usual mantles of red and blue as they took a seat in an offhand corner. Usually, Yuu would have loved to interact with her fellow Godslayers, but her current state of wear wasn't the kind of impression she wanted to leave upon them. Ai was honestly glad to stay away from them. They may be allies, but she knew nothing of them. Only time would tell if they were truly "friend" or "foe".

Whump.

From within one of the rooms, was a dull thumping noise.

whump whump

If one were to look inside, they'd find a girl wearing a white tanktop and tight fitting black pants beating the stuffing out of punching bag. The room itself had very little in the way of personal decoration aside from a bed, a few drawers likely full of clothing and radio which was currently playing some fast-paced metal. The rest of the room was filled with similar work out equipment. A large weight machine sat in a corner of the room and some other dumbbells rested on the floor. On top of the cabinet, sat an immaculate combat shotgun and pistol - both of which were definitely well taken care of by their owner. The only perhaps oddity, was that the middle of the floor was completely cleared of any object.

Whump whump - crrrk

The metal rod holding the bag to the base groaned as girl slammed her fist into it, sending the poor thing sliding back a few feet. Finally done, she panted, feeling somewhat winded. She had been going non-stop for almost an hour now. Certainly she was confident in her stamina and physical prowess, but even she started to get a little out of breath after that long of a physical work out with only a few small breaks in between.

She wiped some sweat off of her forehead, moving the black locks of hair out of her vision. After getting that little memo last night she made sure to adjust accordingly. Normally, she would have been up until six but with the meeting or whatever taking place then, she needed to get up earlier so she could do her usual routine. So Aegis did what she always did first thing in the morning. A nice jog, some routine weight work, simple stuff really...well, for her at least. It wouldn't really do her much good considering she was this strong without even trying, but she wasn't one to sit on her ass and do nothing.

"Whew." She looked at the punching bag, the metal base of which had been bent at almost a forty five degree angle from her last blow. Really, she had a rather nasty habit of breaking almost anything she beat up on. She liked to think it was because she was just too strong for her own good sometimes.

Aegis, or Kat as she preferred to be called, took a seat on the bed, picking up a towel and throwing it over her shoulders. So today was the day, huh? The day they finally got their first mission and grouped into squads. Honestly, she was more than a little nervous - not that she'd ever admit it to anyone, but she had her fair share of concerns...but it wasn't her place to question orders or worry about it. She looked over to the clock hanging on the wall. Well, just enough time for a shower and a bit of free time...even if she'd have no idea what to do with that free time.

After the shower, Kat put on her usual attire. Simple tank top, some easy to move in pants, and some boots that looked like they'd hurt a helluva lot if you happened to be unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of one...and that was it. She wasn't exactly one for fancy dresses. The simpler and easier to move in, the better. She walked into the auditorium as if she owned the place, a confident stride that made it obvious what she likely thought of herself and the others. Her boots made heavy footfalls as she walked to the front and took a seat right at the front of the room. She wanted a front row seat to all of this, just to be sure she didn't miss anything.

She folded her arms, propping one of her legs up on the other, and waited. Seemed like she was one of the first ones there...well, hopefully the others wouldn't be late.

They might have a problem if they were.

Karu (V)

While rolling out of bed, it was rare for the red headed girl to wake up early, not that she hasn’t before, but after she had received the Head Doctor Verner's message the night before – little to no sleep came. They were to meet at the Auditorium at six in the morning, the real thing coming their way, Karu could barely hold her excitement. She didn’t bother brushing the rats nest that she calls hair, and simply put it in a messy bun, like she done every morning (which would be midmorning) before training with her siblings. Well, half siblings anyways. She dug around her small, but messy room, for the clothing that they needed for training, but this was the real thing, and she started to wonder about who she is going to be teamed up with. Hopefully none of the brutes, they were mainly all muscle and hardly thought about a plan. No, don’t think like that Karu. They are family, not strangers. She thought to herself.

It wasn’t before long that she glanced at the digital clock to see that it was quarter to six, man she was going to miss breakfast. She shook her head to one side and back again to get herself focus on what’s ahead. She grabbed her bag of sweets and popped one in her mouth to keep her focused on what team she’ll be on. Not that she can complain about anything. So, she started to stroll down the corridors and take a peek inside of the staffs heads. They always peeked her interest, but she would let them know that she was inside of their heads every now and again. Yes she had abuse her powers, but does she regret it? Not the slightest. She giggled at the memory that she made one of the staff bring her some salt water taffy for her (the one thing that she wanted to try), and the staff member had gotten in trouble for bringing outside foods into the facility.

With a thought on her mind, Karu decided to take a little detour to see if Grey or Virgil were up. If not, then she could always walt's right in and wake them up too. She gave another giggle at the thought of asking them up early, she could pull a prank, but Virgil wouldn’t like that and he would steal her sweets again in spite of her pulling a prank on him because interesting. And Grey? Well she didn’t want to be on his bad side… again. She sighed hard and started to make a beeline towards the Auditorium. Deciding not to take the detour after all.

Shortly after she had reached the room, it only took ten minutes to get to the large room, she noticed that a few people were already sitting inside. She dug in her pockets and pulled out another sweet to calm her down, but also to keep her awake as well. She made her way towards one of the chairs, seating herself while smacking her lips a little to suckle on the piece of candy that she had in her mouth. She knew that it annoyed some of her siblings, and she thought that it was interesting to see their reactions every time she done so. Let’s see how annoyed they will be this morning hmm? she thought to herself, keeping an eye on everyone else.

Enter The Dragon!

Drake grumbled as he slowly got out of his cot, the alarm by his bed stand in the cold facility bedroom rung loud and clear, echoing off of the metal walls. The ringing was irritating, he was persistent in telling his superiors 'calmy' to change it into something soother, but they insisted that he'd never get up if that were the case. Besides, this morning was the big day after all. Regardless, #23 had quiet enough of the tormenting alarm, and smashed it to pieces with a single blow of a crushing hand. Rolling out of bed, the Groggy godslayer walked towards his personal shower. He turned the water to the hottest meter it can go, and stuck his arm to let him feel the temperature. It was cold, at least to him, bitter cold. Shivering, even as the water finally heated up it was still too 'mild' for his taste. Though yet again, his superiors insist that they cannot set the water temperature any hire. Frustrated he shut the shower off and closed the curtain. Still undressed, he went to his closest. He had prepared for the day he would be fed up of forcing himself in cold showers, it was time for him to be bathed in his own fashion.

Opening the closet door revealed a can of gasoline he convinced to keep. It was difficult for him to obtain such a luxary, as they warned it could be very hazardous to the facility. They finally allowed to take in his request but only for testing purposes and to be monitored. In truth, he never did get to test with it, keeping it in his closet and waiting for the men in their lab coats to forget about. He would uncap the gasoline can, and would begin pouring the flammable oil over his head and down his pale flesh. Then with a simple spit of a spark the gasoline would violently ignite off of his body until he was completely shrouded in flames. For the first few moments he was comfortable letting the flames cleanse the filth that had accumulated of his body, however the smoke detector went off in a few seconds after, and the ceiling sprinklers turned on, showering drake with cold water. He stood there, it would be normally difficult for simple water to put out lit gasoline, but it appears the scientists were one step ahead to his antics, as the water system in his room had a special chemical to not only help snuff out the flames but also dissolve the oil of gasoline.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After an hour of suffering Drake exited his dorm suited with a winter coat and black trousers that were a bit damp from his unfortunate morning. He kept the soft furry hood over his head that casted a deep shadow over most of his face save his smooth chin and lips as he made it to the designated meeting room, The Auditorium. He wasn't thrilled about the idea of socializing with others, even if they were just as much as a monster he was. As he looked around from just after the door way at all the strangers he would be squeezing his stress ball lightly in his left hand. His Amber eyes were glowing faintly, just enough to be noticed clearly from his shaded face, the ambiance it gave off and its reptilian slits looked almost like small flickering fire.

Six

The night before, 8:37 PM

Six saw an alert on his wristband. Well, he had seen it before, but now was a better time to check. Should probably avoid thinking like that in the future. As he read the message, he began to grin with excitement. This was going to be great! A real mission! He turned to his bed, and set a timer for 4:30. He didn't want to take any chances being late. Apparently some of the other godslayers were a bit more...rigid in their discipline. Commendable, but a bit annoying. As he began to drift off, a thought crossed his mind. Will we actually be ready for this?

4:30 AM

Six woke up, startled by the alarm, the sharp noise having scared away the doubts of the previous night. He got out of bed, taking a minute to wake up. Today was a big day. Couldn't miss anything. He took a quick shower, and walked over to the center of the room. A square pool, only about 4x4 feet, awaited him. He began to toy with the water, forming complex loops and twirls, sometimes miniature versions of things he'd seen or heard. It had become a custom of his, a way to test his powers while entertaining himself.Nice of them to give me this. I bet the others have something more like them. I suppose the scientists would probably recognize our needs before we do, though. Still nice.

After a good twenty minutes, Six snapped out of it. He had somewhere to be, even though the meeting didn't start for another hour. Nothing wrong with being early. He ran out of the room, the pitter patter of his feet slowing down as he drew closer to the room. He waited outside, looked around the corner, and saw some people in there. Not very many, maybe only three. Someone else walked in through the door, and Six decided to follow. He took a seat in the front row, glancing around to better determine his surroundings. He turned towards the door, smiling at the workers and occasionally what seemed to be a godslayer(!) who walked in.

The room was dimly-lit by a series of white candles. The sound of water trickling into a bamboo cup could be heard before the cup filled and the bamboo tipped to clunk upon a rock, dumping its water back into a small rock fountain. The room smelled of lemongrass, and various plants decorated the interior from vegetables—carrots, tomatoes, green onion, potatoes, snap peas—to aloe, bamboo, lady palm, philodendron, and snake plant. The walls and ceiling were honey vanilla and the floor tatami mat. There was little to no kitchen appliances, but the ruins of a kitchen existed covered in plants with the sink used to grow melons. A futon with a black comforter was against the western wall outlined by plants, and northeast of the bed, was a black pool. The pool constantly cycled filtered water and remained a moderate temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Standing in the pool with a gleaming katana within his hands, was a Rabbit.

The man stood waist-deep in the pool with his right foot situated before his left. Water gleamed off the lean muscles that sculpted his athletic figure and with every swift turn and motion he carried his sword through, his muscles shifting beneath his flesh. The water provided natural resistance for his motions. The orange, heated edge of his sword left its glowing signature on the air with its every swing. One of Rabbit’s hands released the hilt of the blade as the sword flipped behind the back of his other hand. With the twist of his wrist, the blade was flipped upright, slicing across the surface of the water with a loud, evaporating hiss as a burst of vapor rose toward the ceiling. The blade crossed his chest, chest muscles swelling before it uncrossed. The martial artist turned in a smooth circle in the water. His free hand struck the pool’s surface to send the crystal liquid leaping into the air and with his blade, each rippling bead shattered like glass and dissolved into vapor with the rapid swish of Carrot.

Splash. More water was launched into the air to be cut down by his blade until he tossed the sword above his head to cut two drops that had leapt higher than intended. Rabbit extended his arm and as the blade came down spread his index and middle fingers to close them about the sides of his sword. Between his fingers, he felt the heat radiating from the plasma that comprised its lethal edge. The water on his hands quickly evaporated and before the heat could scald his well-calloused fingers, he flicked the blade around to catch its hilt in his hand.

The man turned toward the water’s edge finished with his training for the morning and revealed his face to be obscured by a white rabbit mask. The circular eye holes were dark but for the right hole where a red sphere glowed. He approached the stairs leading out of the pool, a curtain of water tumbling down his stomach and thighs as he rose out of it, a fundoshi at his hips. He padded across the reed flooring over to where Carrot’s black sheath lay and knelt to return the blade to its scabbard. Rising to his feet, he rested the blade against his shoulder and sauntered into a side room with plants to the left and right of the doorway to enter a closet.

The ceiling lamps passed over his head, his right eye glowing crimson in the shadows of his mask. His lengthy stark-white tail of hair laid across his shoulder down the right side of his body where a black, moisture-wicking muscle shirt clung to his torso and below that were two leather belts that crossed his hips in an “X” weaving in and out of his pants rungs. His pants were dark-red denim with two cargo pouches on the sides. They gave his strong legs two inches of room and sagged over a black pair of combat boots. His steps softly thudded upon the floor. In his right hand he gripped Carrot, while his left swung naturally beside him. Both of his wrists had leather wristbands and the shells of his ears were lined with red, green, and diamond-white studded earrings.

As Rabbit approached the auditorium, he noticed the one kid who wanted to stand before the door like a moron. Already, his first impression was ruined. Did he think he was a door? Without hesitation in his steps, Rabbit shouldered right by him with equal disrespect as he headed for a seat at the table. He didn’t intend to sit in the front. The third row was more to his liking.

Ashe was as always training at that hour. She was one of those monsters that enjoyed being monsters, she didn't care that the scientists looked at her as if she were a thing and not a real person. What she cared about is being allowed to get out there and fight , that's all that mattered.

Ashe was in one of the only rooms in the research facility that allowed her to use her powers without being afraid of blowing up stuff that the scientists believed to be important , why would they get upset at a machine in a wall when it blew up ? It was a nice explosion.
She made some pushups and sit ups and then proceeded at bomb disarming training ,something fast warm up let her body&mind. At 4:20 she finished her initial warm up and started the real training. Her explosive clay started to get out of her skin and she molded it into tiny , tiny spiders. 10 if one was to count them. She focused on them and took control of their bodies made of clay , directed them towards a mannequin that could be used as target practice and blew them up one by one. Small explosions rocked the body of the mannequin.

5:40 AM

After the training , Ashe went to her room and took a quick shower and went straight to the auditorium. She didn't cared much about the others but they were there. Weapons just like her, she just had to be the better weapon in the room and she would've been picked to be in the first mission outside the research facility. Her first real fights against the creatures, the scientists call "Fiends" and "Gods". Whatever.
Ashe saw the "action" at the entrance of the Auditorium and shook her head. Weapons should not be used on one another. Weapons are meant to be used against the enemy and that's all. The enemies have to die, weapons have to survive. It was simple as that in her head.
She quickly entered the Auditorium and took a seat in the front row , right near someone that had a number on his face much like her own. "Six" it read.
She looked at him and said with a neutral voice " Are you a weapon too ? "

Lucia

Slayer HQ.
Biocontainment Level, HIgh Security Quarters
6:32 P.M.

The fairly sparse, 18x18 ft room had been all but silent up until now. Although “lights out”, or the time designated to shut off the lights to encourage sleep among most subjects, wasn’t for a few more hours, X was feeling lethargic, ready to end the day like he had many times before: lying quietly on the floor and staring off into space, rather motionless, waiting for “bedtime” when the room would be locked down he would stop being overseen for the day (though he is still recorded/videotaped).

Commonly, as he would subsist on a single meal, frequently nutrient supplements (or a large allotment of raw meat occasionally) in the middle of the day, he didn’t eat along with lab personnel or other slayers, which was preferable for its own reasons. Matters pertaining to testing, training and exercise would take up the rest of his time until about 6:00, when the science team tended to find him growing unruly and incompliant.

The room, or cell as it was originally designed around and is largely still considered by most of the scientists, is outfitted with state of the art equipment with more tech being added on to meet the needs that stem from containing a subject of this kind. Currently, it is equipped with a robust ventilation system which is activated prior to anyone entering. On the ceiling, there are four high resolution cameras, one near every corner. The room’s walls, ceiling and floor are comprised of a durable composite alloy, made to withstand a great deal and degree of damage, not that X ever bothered to really test its limits. They made for a dull, all-white tiled, laboratory aesthetic.

Still, it was not without a few creature comforts to appease its occupant. Aside from an expanded living space, made thusly after it was eventually figured out that X would spend hours of his free time tapping and picking at the walls to communicate that his living space was too small, there is a simple, armless wooden chair that X positioned in the middle of the room and a wooden stool nearby. Additionally, there’s a four wheeled, tiltable, patient restraining table that has been his bed for as long as he could remember.

Aside from these three things, his room would be very much featureless if not for a series of deployable components. For example, on one of the walls there is a switch that, when activated, causes a section of wall next to it to extend out a few feet, revealing a clothing rack for X’s apparel. A similar sensibility was put towards the nine foot high door, which is “hidden” behind another part of the wall whose segments part longways when the door is activated from the outside.

Now however, the wall opposite the entrance hummed and whirred to life. This was accompanied with a kind of alert system: a series of special lights on the ceiling began to blink red upon the already dimmed cell as a somewhat loud, audible signal filled the space with its tedious tones. Although considerably annoyed, the boy would likely have continued lying on the floor under the assumption that the alarms would pass eventually, if not for the PDA on his right wrist blinking and vibrating in an irksome manner.

The sensation too strange to ignore, X rose to his feat with the intention of removing the device. But as he got up, a perceptible sideways line became distinguishable on the aforementioned wall, segments shifting out of the way to reveal a large display monitor. Curious, X approached the monitor tapping the screen to see if it was interactive in some way - it wasn’t.

He placed his right hand on and over various parts of the device, investigating the foreign object. Suddenly a message appeared, Lucia jerking his hand back in hushed surprise and immediately reading the communication amidst an adjustment of his glasses. As the machine receded and disappeared behind the enclosure, X stood there for a minute eyeing his room’s digital clock. Planning out the following morning’s schedule in his head, his thoughts turned to matters beyond punctuality.

Lucia stepped over to the wooden stool, finding on it the one thing he wanted at that moment. Neatly folded and measuring about 70 inches long by 8 inches wide, this grey wool scarf is easily one of his two most prized possessions, the other being the glasses. He picked it up, wrapping it around his neck, enjoying its soft texture and warmth. Yet, sitting on his chair and facing the concealed door to the outside, something concerned him. Would he be allowed to take either precious treasure out on assignment? Probably not - but that’s not what disquieted him.

Teammates... So these are the individuals he must not kill under any circumstances.

Personnel Elevator (Biocontainment Lobby to Base Proper)
5:37 A.M.

“Do you understand? The shock collar will be taken off before you’re on the field. Until then, it’s staying on for as long as you’re on ground level... I expect you to be on your best behavior.” Dr. Harper sighed in his usual exacerbated way, never quite sure that Lucia was really listening.

Lucia was being transported the usual way: via his restraining table, escorted by the head of the science team, Dr. Harper, along with an assistant to push the table and two armed security guards. Fresh from a shower, the young would-be slayer was allowed his glasses for the briefing, but had a black wool bag over his head to ensure he’d stay calm during transport. As the good doctor mentioned, instead of his scarf, subject X wore an electric security collar. It wasn’t so much the collar that annoyed him as much as its place in lieu of his favorite article.

“Your equipment is in the armory. You’ll collect them once you’re given your assignment,” Harper explained as the car reached its destination. “Remember the notifications on your PDA’s map. You’ll know where to go.”

The doors opened, letting the group continue on for the Auditorium, their footsteps and rolling wheels adding the ambient sound of a facility alive until they reached a few yards from the stylish facility’s entrance. The bag was lifted per Harper’s nod to the assistant, Lucia wincing at the onset of light. His straps were undone and he came to his feet, easily assuming that the room before him was where he needed to be.

Wearing a plain black, hoodie sweater and a pair of his favorite, gray, rather loose khaki pants, Lucia took a few tentative steps before looking back at Harper, who was in little mood for the boy’s blank gaze in protest. The doctor folded his arms, approaching him to make sure he heard. “X, you know you’re hanging by a very thin thread as it is, right? I’ve fought long and hard for seven years to keep you from being decommissioned. Now it’s your turn make sure the work hasn’t been in vain,” he stated matter of factly.

Whether that satiated Lucia or not, the doctor would remain uncertain. Nevertheless, Lucia turned again and entered the massive Auditorium. However unenergetic he seemed, to him, this room is a whole other world, its occupants - aliens and rogue elements.

A few individuals were already there, most appearing to take the front rows. That worked out well since, with his glasses (or even contact lenses), even the farther seats are acceptable choices. This is preferable considering a seat further back and near an exit gave him a better vantage point and options in case any situation called for a quick escape. The only drawback would be that he wouldn’t get a closer look at the giant, high end aperture, which teased at the land he had only been told about.

The entire facility was a relative shock to the senses, including the daunting scale and the bewitching echo effect, even from his subtle footfalls on the positively reflective, hard floors. As a matter of fact, on inspecting the acoustic phenomenon, Lucia looked down and noticed his darkened reflection looking down/up at him, to which he crouched to get a more preferable view. The semblance shared his unenthused face, both of them balancing on the front end of each others’ feet and touching the tips of their index fingers (Lucia’s right, the reflection’s left).

Inquisitiveness considerably indulged, Lucia and his mirror image walked as quietly as they could to the a seventh row seat away from the center and the other slayers, deftly lowering and interlocking their respective hands together, leaning back for now but remaining alert.

Virgil

Virgil's Room, 0545

==~==

A loud snoring emanated from the room of Godslayer #8, otherwise known to everyone as Virgil. As per usual, Virgil was lazing about in his room, sprawled haphazardly across his bed, snoring up a storm, to the point that one might assume the light fixtures were vibrating. Such was the prerogative of what was quite possibly the laziest Godslayer in the complex. The minutes ticked by, one by one, on the strangely pristine alarm clock next to the sleeping teenager. 0546. 0547. 0548. If he didn't get up soon, he'd be late. And, as much as the faculty permitted his lackadaisical attitude in other areas, tardiness on the day of their first meeting surely wouldn't be tolerated. He might even get reprimanded- perhaps they'd even steal his stash of candy bars. Unthinkable, that. Regardless, the seconds ticked on toward Virgil's demise-by-shiftlessness. 0549. 0550--

In the exact second the clock hit that time, Virgil rose smoothly into a sitting position, with such abruptness that one may wonder whether or not he was ever asleep to begin with. He yawned, a large, loud, jaw-breaking sort of yawn, and smiled afterward, eyes flashing with blue light for a split-second. With practiced ease, he rose from the bed, standing up and stretching briefly, before walking over to his closet. He ran a hand through his messy white hair, giving the most token of efforts to tidy his unruly mane. He pulled on a red athletic shirt over his bare chest (and thereby undoing his "efforts" with his hairdo), then pulled his favorite black trenchcoat over the rest of his ensemble. He kicked some shoes onto his feet, checked to make sure the jeans he'd fallen asleep in were at least passable (no stains, at least), and, with a final casual glance at the mirror hanging close to his bed, smiled as he practically slithered out of his room. Just as the door closed, the alarm clock next to his bed turned over to the next minute.

0555.

==~==

Auditorium, 0559

==~==

Virgil languidly strode through the door of the auditorium just as the clock turned over, smiling at his timing. He did have a reputation to uphold, after all. He glanced around at the rest of his assembled "siblings," all of them Godslayers like him. He'd met a few of them before this day- Karu, in particular, and Gray as well. He grinned as he thought of his erstwhile half-sister; she was fun to steal sweets from, especially since she was well aware of his own stash, which annoyed her to no end when he stole hers. Which, of course, just made him want to do it more.

On the subject of his stash, Virgil pulled a candy bar from his pocket, unwrapping it carefully before shoving the whole chocolate-nougat-whatever amalgamation into his mouth, chewing with relish as he took a seat in the very back row, just as the clock turned over to 0600. He smiled as he chewed.

Today's gonna be a good day.

Drake The Dragonslayer

@Holy Soldier

Drake would stumble forward as he was pushed aside by a passing sibling. The left eye of Drake would snap and twitch in irritation as he stood up to see the back of the perpetrator walk to take a seat. He would thrust his hand forward, wanting so badly to roast such insolence away from existence, but he quickly pulled back and prevented himself from carrying out his inner demons, yet he could swear their was something like whispers convincing him to slaughter the fool.

Drake took out his stress ball from his coat pocket, taking a seat in the front row as he vigorously squeezed the item to seemingly no end. His eyes concentrated forward as he refused to let any more of his siblings irritate him, less the auditorium go up smoke. He waited for this little meeting to start and be over with, though deep down he was a bit anxious to be leaving to fight. The thought hadn't really sunk into him yet, but anxiety was building up none the less. This caused him to squeeze his stress relief toy even further.

Are you a weapon, too?
The question lingered a bit in the relative quietness of a room, and Six thought of the question. It wasn't hard for him to answer, it's just he wasn't sure how to phrase it. He saw a seemingly upset godslayer enter the room, squeezing a...stress ball? Six thought that was what it was called. He'd talk to him later. Right, the question.

"Am I a weapon? Well, let's see. Designed to fight and kill. Yeah, that makes us weapons. I thought everyone kn-" Six stopped. He wasn't sure if this was one of the more....volatile ones. He hoped not. "Well, what specifically are you getting at with this? It seems more rhetorical than anything."

He glanced over at the angry godslayer before returning his vision back to the one that spoke to him. He tried to show slight worry to the red-haired godslayer, which apparently was the eleventh. He wasn't sure if she'd pick up on it, due to the emotionally devoid natures of some of the slayers. Hopefully this one wasn't like that.

Gray

Dorm XII, 5:20 AM
Bothering: Karu @DeathXtheXTree

Mornings never agreed with Gray.

As a devout believer in energy conservation, the daily event was simply filled with far too many steps that each required an obnoxious amount of effort for him to ever consider it worth it. Of course, this explanation never seemed to convince the lab coats, much to the Godslayer’s dismay. And with his alarms blaring, as they had been for the past 20 minutes, he was beginning to wonder how anyone could fool themselves into believing that mornings weren’t the true enemy that needed to be defeated.

For the time being, Gray was able to tune out the varied alarm calls that were echoing throughout his room, which was shockingly tidy considering who dwelled in it, by firmly pressing his pillow to his face. Thankfully the small room he resided in was completely soundproofed, if only for the fact that his morning ritual could likely wake the dead. It wasn’t much, as it was as bare bones and nondescript as the rooms came, but it had a bed that was comfortable enough and that was about all he truly cared about.

Alas, a pillow could only muffle the cacophony of multiple alarm clocks going off for so long before his need to silence their screams overwhelmed his indolent nature. So with a heavy sigh of defeat, Gray finally shoved himself off of his bed. This triggered the motion sensors in his room to shut off one of the alarms that had been needling his eardrums all too incessantly.

It was a clever system, really, as the lab coats learned all too quickly that Gray was prone to abuse his power to shut off normal alarm clocks without even leaving his bed, regardless of how often they switched up their locations on him. So clever, in fact, that merely getting out of bed only turned off one of his three alarms. Thus, Gray all but dragged his body across his barren room to the bathroom, which rewarded him with the death of the second alarm. A groggy hand rubbed at his eyes, which were still rather cross with him for trying to keep them open, as his other one reached over and pawed at his sink until it turned on.

Sweet, blissful silence filled the room once he finished brushing his teeth and turned off the faucet, as it had been discovered after many tests that this was the point that Gray could truly be defined as “awake.” But glaring back at him in the mirror was a face that had an annoyed grimace etched into it and a rather unkempt mess of raven black hair that he had absolutely no interest in bothering with.

The expression didn’t improve much as he got dressed in his usual black pants and grayish blue long sleeve shirt. Slogging all the way to the Auditorium didn’t help it much either, as he was still miffed about the big wigs coming down on him for using his Ability “needlessly” to traverse the facility. Needless to say, Gray wasn’t all that enthused that he was about to get even more work, but some strange part that he didn’t like to acknowledge seemed to welcome the sense of purpose.

Thankfully, the weird feeling didn’t get a chance to last long, as he was just around the corner from his destination. A quick glance at his bracelet informed him that he had ten minutes to spare, which resulted in a small “tch” to escape him. Virgil would doubtlessly show him up at this rate, as the two had always unconsciously competed to see who the bigger slacker was, but he also couldn’t be bothered to try and outdo him at this point. The doors were already open, which was a small victory that he was willing to take.

His first glance into the room revealed a great many faces, some of which he even recognized. And among those, there were even some that he knew to stay well away from. But before he could strategically choose his seat, an all too familiar sucking noise filled the room. Gray let out a discontented sigh, knowing exactly who it was coming from without even looking, but felt a small grin tugging at his cheeks despite himself.

”Do you have to be such a menace so early in the morning?” he asked the red head, ruffling her hair in typical obnoxious-older-brother fashion as he took his seat behind her.

6:48pm

Somewhere deep within the expansive archives of rooms, the second born slept soundly, her form settled comfortably among a soft pile of large pillows. The room around her was dimly lit by a soothing orange light, and was mostly undecorated, besides the plethora of various sized pillows scattered across the carpeted floor. A single low rising table stood against the back wall, crafted from roughly cut dark oak with little embelishment. On the table stood a single, large, amplified digital alarm. The numbers on it's screen were presented with dim green LEDs.

When unaffected by the coloured bulb, the walls were painted grey and were designed to reflect noise. This resulted in sheer silence, accented only by a faint humming - a lullaby, in essence. Sleep was indescribably valuable to the Godslayer known as Rue, and notably, the girl slept unclothed and on her front; a position most comfortable considering the bizzarity of the appendages she was known to hold on her back. Unless one were to look directly upwards, the silver hoops which hung from the ceiling would perhaps go unnoticed. They hung in a circular formation, eight in total, and extended about half a metre downward from their rivets. Their appearence was akin to that of gym equpiment, but to the sullen and lazy Rue, they served only as hoists, keeping her appendages out of her way.

The walls did not silence the bracelet's obnoxious bleeping, nor settle the constant vibrating. The girl stirred at the unwelcome noise, and her eyes opened slowly, kindling out of her comatose. In slow uncomfortable movements, she shifted her arms to either side of her, pushing herself up painfully into a kneeling position. Her head hung down in drowsiness and loose hair fell over her face as a result, shrouding a preturbed expression. With drawn out motions she silenced the bracelet, taking a moment of recovery before even acknowledging the message she had just recieved.

After a long glance down at the device on her arm, Rue lifted her head, and drew a long breath. Finally. She somewhat longed for a purpose outside of the labs, but despite her wishes finally arriving, she was disgusted at the 6am arrival time. She turned her wrist to briefly look over the bracelet, stopping at the underside, and stared at the small fuse box which had been modded onto hers. "For times when you lose yourself," they said. She didn't particularly like shock therapy after every test, but perhaps it was needed out in the field.

With comfort and care, Rue settled forwards into her plush surroundings. And as quickly as she had woken up, the Godslayer resumed her hibernation.

6:04am

Waking up the following morning presented the first challenge. If it hadn't been for the banshee alarm she had kindly been gifted with, Rue would most certainly not be here at all, let alone a few minutes late. She wandered through long corridors with hooded eyes, her hair now kept properly and partially tied in two small pigtails on each side of her head. Her clothing, as per standard, was a black bodysuit, accented with a silver zip up her front and buckles which fastened the material together on her back. The back in particular was peculiar to the eye, as four rectangular areas had been cut out to expose seemingly bare skin. The collar extended upwards to cover most of her neck, and the legs tucked into sturdy boots which reached up her shins.

Rue felt no sense of awkwardness as she entered the auditorium marginally late, and instead focused on scanning over the people who were seated already. Siblings; her brothers and sisters in combat. She knew this, but she couldn't help but feel a sense of unfamiliarity with them. Not only because she didn't know them personally, but because her genepool was ever so slightly different. They shared the same mother, but the God's blood only seemed to push them away. She turned her vision elsewhere. She hoped they wouldn't smell the blood within her.

Aiming for the seats against the wall, Rue sat so that she could lean tiredly on her arm, unable to sit comfortably backwards. She hated conventional human seating.

Karu

Shortly after Karu had seated herself in the middle row, not too far in front nor to far back not to hear what was going on, but felt someone ruffling her hair, making a few strands of hair fall from the already messy bun that she has. ”Do you have to be such a menace so early in the morning?”

You know I have too. Much more interesting to see others getting annoyed and aggravated first thing in the morning, Grey! She smiled as she ‘spoke’ to Grey with her ability. It wasn’t he first time that she had done so, it was a habit that she had gotten into, and she couldn’t help but use it. Karu grabbed the bag of hard candies and offered Grey one before popping another one. But if you ask me, I’m pretty sure that no one can really hear it. Other than you of course.

She gave him one of her smiles, though there was more behind the smile itself, and it was she wanted to see the reactions of how one of the stronger, yet responsible, siblings act to something hitting the back of their heads or something along the lines. While Grey sat behind her, she really didn’t let him see what she was about to do, and so she sent a small piece of candy fly through the air. She really didn’t expect to hit Kat on the back of the head, she may have paled a little but snorted a little and ducked down while holding her mouth to stop the laughter. It was hard. Karu hopped for the best and maybe Kat didn’t see her ducked behind some chairs to hide, it was roughly about as the same time that Virgil had walked into the room.

~Kat~

@DeathXtheXTree
@Sarcelle Renard - Basically lobbed a baseball at his head

For the most part, Kat remained silent as the other slayers and people filtered into the room, barely making a mental note of her half brothers and sisters. Karu, who was barely big enough to be called more than a twig. Had some sort of psychokinetic powers or whatever the fuck that even meant. She could do magic tricks or something. She didn't know the full capabilities of what she was capable of, but Kat did know she wouldn't last a second in a physical fight. Drake. Someone who had more anger issues than she did. At least she knew how to show some self restraint sometimes, but scale butt? He was going to be more of a hindrance than actual help. Gray and Virgil. The oh so fabulous lazy bum crew. She really hoped she didn't get put on a team with any of them. She was liable to kill them before the fiends did.

She didn't have much else to say about the rest of them. The Easter Bunny was already starting trouble, not really new there. She didn't know Ashe too well, but as long as she didn't start trouble she wouldn't say anything. So for now, Number Four kept her head down and watched the scientists and non-god slayers in the room. She wanted to get this over with, and to wherever and whatever they'd be doing. It'd make her feel a whole hell of a lot better to go ahead and get this over with, at least and her brothers and sisters weren't making this easier on anyone by fighting or starting trouble.

And then someone had to go and piss her off.

Something hit the back of her head. It bounced harmlessly off of her shield, light blue ripples forming in the air before dissipating, but it was more than enough to agitate her. Her foot left its position on her knee, slamming into the floor with a dull thud. Any who looked, might find a vein bulging on her forehead as an annoyed scowl formed on her face. She looked at the ground, noticing a peice of candy on it. Someone had to just go and throw something at her, huh? She turned her head, glancing at her siblings to try and find the culprit. Virgil? He had just walked in. He had a chocolate bar of some sort, but he didn't look too guilty. She was pretty sure none of the others would start something either.

Grey though? He was inspecting a candy that looked suspiciously similar to the one that had been thrown at her. Well, if this little fuckle duck wanted to start something she'd oblige. She might get into trouble for it, but she needed some stress relief right now and Grey just happened to be the lucky person that was going to help her with that. A small dark blue sphere about the size of a baseball formed in her hand. She tossed it up into the air, catching it when it came down...and then lobbed it right at Grey. Good news, was that the ball weighed pretty much nothing. Bad news was, it moved as fast as a professional baseball player could toss a fastball.

"Next time pick a fight with someone that won't crush that lazy ass of yours in five seconds!"

She yelled across the room at him as the ball flew straight towards his face. She turned back around in her seat, tapping the heel of her foot against the floor impatiently. He better be glad this in the auditorium where all the scientists and people that could possibly restrain her were.

Otherwise, she'd shove her boot so far up his ass he'd be tasting leather.

Of course, if someone did something else...well. She probably wouldn't be able to restrain herself.

Salik || Night Before Meeting

Salik read the e-mail, a small smile forming across his face. This meant what he had always hoped for, to fulfill his role in his life, the very reason for existence was finally being tested, finally being put to use. Salik arose from his desk, slowly pacing around his room, excitement pulsed through his blood, and his paced quickened, thoughts of a free world for Humans, pace quickened, he knew he was a weapon, pace quickens until he spun on the spot, punching hard against the leather punching bag, it's chain echoed throughout the room, slightly fading as Salik's breath became audible, it was soft and steady, short but rough.

"Gods are an Infection on humankind, and we're the Cure."

And just with that one mantra, he rose, closing eyes and straightening, his breathing a lot more steady. He was calm, not moving an inch. This was how he calmed himself, it was his only source of control when he was ecstatic. He had to be at the meet in 3 hours, sleep wasn't going to be an option, it didn't mean much to him, he slept rarely and its affect wasn't noticeable. He decided to do some light training, pushups for 1.5 hours and sit ups for the remainder.

Heading To The Meet

Salik was excited, his training was over, his life's purpose was now come to light. He had left his room and headed to the meet, he was 10 minutes early, a few brothers and sisters sat, how could they sit, how could he sit? He went to the side, he could only stand, he leaned against it, his smile ever so bright.

Ashe nodded. " You are like me then. I wanted to know. That's all. We shall be used together then. "

Ashe let some clay create from her skin and molded it into a sparrow. As soon as it was made into a sparrow it started to fly through the room and landed on Six's shoulder. A small feather left it's tail in flight and Alexis looked at it before making it explode ( a small explosion. Not even as loud as a firecracker ).
She started to laugh at the explosion.

VII: Raiden
and CXIV: Astrape
Firing Range/Killhouse "Purgatory", 1830 Hrs (6:30pm)

A loud buzzer punctuated the break in the chorus of gunfire and smoking targets as Raiden let his hands fall to his sides, the carbine in them held loosely in his left hand as holographic walls dissolved around him. He took a second to breathe before the room filled with light and he flinched as his enhanced eyes' biologically night vision was briefly overwhelmed. Taking a second to re-adjust his eyes, he blinked and looked up to the observation window set high into the wall of the training area as a woman's voice came through his earpiece, tinted with a fairly obvious Kanto accent.

"Well done Raiden, That's the last scenario cleared. Your accuracy is remaining steady, 97.4% hit rate at close to medium range. Testing is complete for the day, while we run your post-test results you are free to go."

Raiden tapped the button for the microphone linked to the communications in the control room, a small smile well hidden on his face.

"Thank you, Doctor Kusanagi. I'll be resting for the night, if you need me."

The boy began to gear down, removing the magazine from his carbine and ejecting the chambered round before he placed the gun and ammo on separate racks, until a small bleep caught his attention, originating from the communications device on his wrist. He tapped the touchscreen to see the message from Dr Verner and raised a single eyebrow before he lifted his wrist to indicate to the scientist that he had received the message. He dropped his arm again and swiped across the screen, sending the message to the screen in the control room. There was a pause for a few moments as Dr Kusanagi read the message, and then her reply came though.

"Right, you're dismissed for now. Get something to eat and get some rest. I guess it's time to finally see if your training paid off. I'll drop by your quarters with a more in-depth analysis of your results."

Raiden didn't reply verbally, instead nodding at the woman in the window before he unstrapped the revolver in its holster from his leg and left it with his carbine. He stepped out of the killhouse and his eyes settled on the blonde girl leaning on the opposite wall, playing with a strand of hair. As she heard the door open, she looked up at him and smiled before she bounced slightly over to him.

"Brother! How'd it go? I've heard that 'Purgatory' is the hardest killhouse to beat!"

"It was considerably more difficult than the last scenario, but I managed to clear it. How are you doing, Astrape?"

Raiden couldn't help but smile a little at his pseudo-little sister's enthusiasm as she grinned and handed him a small datapad. He raised an eyebrow and began to read though it as she recounted her training for the day while the pair walked towards the private quarters.

"I managed to clear 'The Village' today. It took me a few tries, but I got the overall mission time down by 7 minutes!"

"You cleared it in 16 minutes? I'm proud of you, that's impressive."

As he spoke, he looked up from the datapad, which contained the data gathered from her training exercises. Raiden had been trained to adapt to various situations via holographic training scenarios that simulated real combat environments, the hardest of which were 'the Village' and 'Purgatory'. Data on his performance was collected and analysed, and he could use that to learn how to better adapt in the future. As a reproduction of his skillset and powers, Astrape was undergoing the same training, and their results were compared. Snapping out of his thoughts, he gave the data another look over as she beamed at his praise.

"Thank you, Raiden! Still though, I couldn't get the casualties as low as you did... I think I rushed things too much..."

"Sometimes, we don't have the luxury of time and we need to act quickly. As much as I don't like casualties, you performed well. You could have paced your shots a little more... here, and... here, but it's nothing too major."

As he spoke, he turned the pad to face her as he replayed the reconstruction of her as she completed the scenario. He paused to show her the shots he was referring to before he handed the pad back and she started to make some notes over the simulation. Finally, they reached his quarters. They spent rest of the evening talking, about the meeting tomorrow and about Astrape's training, until it was time for Raiden to get some rest for the meeting. He walked her to her room, and she stepped in before she turned around with a smile.

"Good Luck with your meeting tomorrow. Stay safe, ok?"

Raiden gave her a small smile as her gently ruffled the shorter girl's hair. He nodded a little.

"I'll do what I can. Goodnight Astrape."

With that, she bid him goodnight in return and he returned to his room. Quickly setting his alarm, he wasted little time in stripping off his coat and shoes before he slipped into bed for the next day.

Briefing Room, 0600 Hrs (6:00am)

Raiden sat alone toward the rear of the room as the assigned meeting time drew closer, his eyes scanning the contents of the datapad in his right hand. He was currently reviewing the data analysis of his latest simulation, trying to pick it apart to find where he could improve. He wasn't the first to arrive, but he had been seated for at least 20 minutes. He hadn't interacted with any of the other people in the room, and only briefly looked up with each new arrival, instead focusing on what was on his pad. He recognised a few of his 'siblings' from the data in their files, including the notably volatile Aegis, the laid-back Gray and the minx-ish Karu, but decided against starting a dialogue for now. Better for him to focus on the task at hand. That's not to say he would turn someone away or ignore them if they spoke to him, but only if they started the conversation with him. Sighing slightly, he closed the datapad and placed it on his lap as he waited for the briefing to begin.

Gray

Gray accepted one of the wrapped monstrosities cautiously, inspecting it with a critical eye as he wondered how in the world the lab coats thought it was a good idea to keep her supplied with a constant stream of sugar. But then again, when one considered just how dangerous a sugar withdrawn girl that could do all kinds of worrisome crap with her mind could be, maybe this was the sensible option. A small grin wormed its way into his expression at the thought.

”Even if we aren’t quite human, I have no idea how your stomach handles this garbage,” he mused dryly as he turned the all too literal sugar bomb between his fingers. While Karu had the audacity to call the stuff candy, the Godslayer knew from rather unfortunate experience just how sickeningly sweet it was.

A flash of movement caught his attention, but he couldn’t quite make out what had happened. But when he glanced away from the candy and saw Kat, one of the top contenders on his People-We-Absolutely-Positively-No-Not-Even-If-It-Would-Be-Hilarious-Don’t-Ever-Fuck-With List, trying to turn him to ash with her glare alone, he knew that the unbearable morning was about to become even more so. And with Karu now crouched and hiding in front of him, just barely able to keep herself from giggling up a storm, well, it didn’t take a genius to put two and two together.

”Oh, you are so dead to me,” he muttered just loud enough for the little envoy of his doom to hear him.

And as he saw the blue ball, which she somehow managed to make look incredibly menacing despite all appearances, he could tell how this story was going to end. Even though he fully expected it, his face would have been sporting a brand new framework if it weren’t for his enhanced reflexes. But even then, the bright sphere had already crossed half the distance between the two before Gray managed to start opening a Rift right in front of his face. He clenched his teeth, hard, and he could have sworn it cursed in irritation as it flew straight into the opening in the universe that he had made.

"Next time pick a fight with someone that won't crush that lazy ass of yours in five seconds!"

The words did little to shake the dumbstruck, mouth slightly agape, look Gray had taken on. He was about to let out a great sigh of relief, only to groan in disgust and gently slap a hand over his face as he realized where he had sent the damn thing. The image was simply far too familiar to him, so in his haste it was the first thing his mind had thought to picture. All of the aggressive remodeling that would have been done to his face had instead been transferred to his beautiful, innocent bed. Thoughts about the wreck that awaited him once he got back to his room were almost too much for the layabout to bear.

’This right here is why mornings should be destroyed entirely,’ he thought all too bitterly.
