Underrated: Ryse Son of Rome

Its completely historically inaccurate I know, but its combat is great and so is its art syle. It completely immerses you in its atmosphere and is less the "history of rome" as much as it is the "legend of rome" with its low fantasy elements.

I like Ryse simply because Roman-era games are hard to come by. Especially in its genre. Last one I loved was Gladius and that was for like the PS2.

EDIT: Yep. PS2. 2003.

Underrated: Transport Fever. Admittedly I feel like a loser when I am sitting there watching my little locomotive trains run by and I'm just enjoying the scenery, and I have nothing with trains all together. But something is incredibly pleasing about making a functioning railroad system and seeing all the different transport modes come together to form a whole is... incredibly satisfying.

There are other games out there that do more or less the same (Cities Skyline etcetera) as Transport Fever isn't really just a transport game either, it's not a railroad tycoon game. The way they handled city growth is incredibly interesting and I like how dynamic it feels and how it feels like I can influence the city growth if I play the game right and do something that requires thought rather than slapping down some zones.

TL;DR Transport Fever is great game, shame it's overlooked by people in favour of other games.

All joking aside, me, id admit that every Resident Evil game before 4 is overrated. Like I get that people missed the full-on puzzle horror aspect, but the recent games didnt need to get dogged on for being different from what they used to be.

I actually liked 5-7 for what they were, to be honest. Especially 7, but thats just me, and me likes the series in general.

Hmm, I think the REmake for the gamecube is overrated, resident evil 1 however perfectly re-created on a new console, wasnt an amazing game to begin with, it was an ambitious jump into a completely new genre, and it deserves props for pioneering but little else.

I think Code Veronica was shit, and 2 and 3 aren't really overrated or underrated, they seem to get deserved responses. But Resident Evil 0 was absolutely overlooked, and easily the best out of the 'slow' games.

I think 7 was fantastic and probably a little underrated.

But 5 and 6 were just BAD like 5 was playable after a shit ton of DLC but 6 was just un-enjoyable. I dont buy the whole 'BUT ITS SUPPOSED TO BE RIDICULOUS' as if that is some how an excuse to make a low quality game. There are plenty ridiculous capcom-esque games (No More Heroes, God Hand, Mad World, Vanquish) that are ridiculous but not poor. I see the same defenses for those crappy 'Modern B-movie throwbacks' like Machette and Machette Kills, just because your film knows its shit, doesnt make it less shit.

Resident Evil 6 isnt a 'fun bombastic action game', its a poor, clunky 3rd person shooter with an un-even tone and Rocket Launcher Zombies, play House of The Dead Overkill instead.

Got any evidence to support that, bucko? You only have to browse through the forums of any fan website in the Resident Evil community to realise how popular the game is, and for the wrong reasons. Was it a good game? Yes. But a good Resident Evil game? Not at all. It changed too much of what made the preceding games what they were, to the point that it's almost something entirely different. Resident Evil 4 consistently makes it into the top lists of all-time best video games. RE4 is the Skyrim of action horror games.

Oh right, that's another thing. It's not survival horror.

Resident Evil 0 was the best of the old school series? Sure, it had some neat concepts and ideas but it's nowhere near the level of REmake. Lazy, uninspired boss designs - literally every boss was just an oversized insect or creature, compare that with the boss encounters in RE2. Far too much backtracking in RE0 too, not as bad as CODE Veronica but still prevalent.

I agree with you on RE7. I feel that if RE1 was released today as a new game, it would be RE7. I enjoyed it a lot.

You went a whole post without mentioning fabricant, kudos to you sir.

All 'slow' RE bosses suck, because of the tank controls and lack of abilities, each boss fight basically boils down to 'did you bring enough herbs and ammo?' with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions. I dont really care what they look like, and if we are going by enemy designs as a marker for good RE games, then RE4 takes the entire series in a landslide.

RE4 deserves every bit of praise it gets, yes its not a strict survival horror, but that doesnt make it a bad RE game, the series dared to try something different and it paid off, the same way it paid off with 7 (which is nearly as action heavy as 4 by the way). It managed to be more exciting, while still maintaining an excellent tone and unnerving atmosphere, it was a game that allowed you to be scared and soak in the creepy while still being a badass. RE4 is the best in the series and one of the most sophisticated games ever made. There is no 'wrong reason' to praise it.

Unless of course you are one of those hype backlash contrarians who want to say that great games aren't great to sound a little edgy like those people who shit on Fire Emblem Awakening.

EDIT: Also to the thread in general, there is a difference between an 'overrated game' and a great game that just hasn't aged well.

For example, Skyrim is overrated, but Golden Eye and Street Fighter 2 just have been corroded by time.

Another underrated game, not brought up much when talking about SNES RPGs:

The Lufia Series.

And I'm not just talking about the randomly generated dungeon if Lufia 2. I mean the whole thing. Both games entirely. They're both solid turn based JRPGs, taking the best of Dragon Quest and the best of Zelda and making something awesome. The story's cookie-cutter fantasy JRPG but it's still charming enough.

Also, Mermaid Swamp. One of the better RPG Horror games (as it doesn't rely solely on jumpscares and chases but has a chilling story too) but it never got a Markiplier Let's Play so nobody ever talks about it. It was made by the same person who made Crooked Man and Paranoiac. (Nobody talks about Paranoiac either but that's 50% dull and 50% a Clock Tower ripoff)

Kengo: Master Of Bushido is an underrated gem if you really are into tactical sword combat. The game is basically a tech demo though, no real game-play outside of the duels.

Also much like @King Tai I have a very huge fondness for the mostly forgotten 'beat em up' genre.
So I consider these games to all be Le-Gems too.

Overrated? probably Super Monkey Ball, the game isnt even that cute.

Code Veronica is my favorite. Four does not even make my top list of Resident Evil titles, lol.

Also, I did not like the newest incarnation of the series.

That's a bold one to pick as a favourite, CODE Veronica isn't the most popular for a number of reasons. For me it was the amount of backtracking in the game, but it's not one that I hate. I'll happily play through it again. I enjoyed RE7, though I can understand the reasons why some might not. I feel as though it falls into the same trap as RE4, as in: This is a good game, but is it Resident Evil?

Did you get the opportunity to check out CODE Veronica X HD? The new lighting effects are fantastic.

I feel like Resident Evil 7 doesn’t become “Resident Evil” until the second half of the game and by then a lot of my enjoyment tends to be curbed by the fatigue of tolerating the approach and direction that was decided upon by the developers. In fact, if you looked at the second half of Resident Evil 7 and take away all of the first person-oriented corridor horror influences and shifted it back to the actual roots of the series (third person perspective, eccentric overtones, absurdist horror, grindhouse exploitation, etc) it’d probably be a relatively good fit. However, with that said, I would like to point out that I am not adverse to Resident Evil’s evolution from a survival horror series to an action horror series—though there is a lot to criticize in the titles within the latter if you prefer the former. I believe the spirit of Resident Evil is a little more than “survival horror” or “action horror” but more to do with the themes, quirks, set pieces, and tone.

I like Resident Evil 4, parts of Resident Evil 6, and a good portion of Resident Evil 5 despite it being centered on unengaging characters as protagonists. But at the heart of it my favorite Resident Evil games will always be Code Veronica, Zero, the Remake/Original, and the second game. They were just more interesting, had better level designs, more dynamic boss designs, and better usage of horror and b-movie tropes put through a Japanese perspective. I also spent a lot of time on Outbreak. God that was a blast. They should do a new one of those.

And no, I haven't had the chance yet but I fully intend to.

Resident Evil 3 lower than 5 and 6? 5 is pretty much unplayable on single player and 6 is...yeah, less we say of it the better.

5 gets some leeway because Albert Wesker is pretty good villain. 6 takes away the horror and ramps up the goofy silly stupidness and action to absurd levels, I'm Glad 7 toned it down a notch.

3 has Nemesis, quite possibly the most terrifying boss in Resident Evil.

I've said everything i've needed to say on RE, but moving on, how about we get into that beautifully annoying FF debate?

I honestly should say off the bat that I think that largely FF is overrated as a whole, I find the story telling fairly weak and the battle systems to be passable but not very exciting, with obvious exceptions.

But here we go using Gowi's format I'll rank the games

Obviously the ones I'm missing I haven't played and a couple of these I haven't totally finished, but yeah.

But yeah I still think the series as a whole is overrated and is largely exlipsed by other RPG series, I only consider the top 2 to be great games, with the 2nd rung to just be 'very good' and apart from 7, Chrono Trigger shits over every single one of these.

I never played any of the Final Fantasy games, but they're a trip. I remember watching one of my best friends beat FF 10.
