Lets get some conversation going in here:

◼ W E E K 0 0 1: The world of Crestwood shows Hyperhuamns as being possibly one of the most oppressed races in history, they're unable to hold positions of authority nor able to use their gifts without fear of punishment. How does this affect your character and their relationship with society both as a whole and within the confines of a highschool social heirarchy? How has discovering that they are a Hyperhuman changed their worldview?

Marcus has spent his entire life as a popular kid - the head honcho. He's been the quarterback, team captain, first seat in the debate club and prom king. Ever since he was a child, he's been fostered into seeing Hyperhumans as a danger, and a way to make a profit. His father's been very forthcoming in teaching Marcus about the workings of his company's tech, painting the Hypes not as an evil, but as an uncontrollable threat.

This obviously clashes pretty harshly with Marcus, who at age 13, discovered he was a Hyperhuman. Much to his father, Nathan's sorrow. While it certainly strained their relationship, Nathan didn't start hating his son - because at the end of the day, Marcus is still his son, his only family and a loving reminder of his one true love, Marcus's mother, Irene.

The discovery that Marcus was a Hype lead to two avenues for their relationship. Nathan almost entirely stopped grooming Marcus to follow in his footsteps. While they did try to keep Marcus's Hyperhuman status a secret, they both understood that it wasn't gonna be a secret for long. Fire and brimstone would start raining down on their lives the moment it got out. Secondly, Nathan started testing less harsh tech on Marcus, with his full permission. Such as the inhibition bracelet Marcus wears.

This summer, the bracelet malfunctioned and Marcus lost control of his powers, using them during practice. Sure, it was just a levitating ball, not really a big deal. But the hundreds of reports that have been living on their front porch, the headlines, the threats and the stocks taking a 17% dip in two months. Life's been different ever since, and Marcus has spent most of the summer abroad in a summer house in Italy, far from all of these troubles. His father wanted him to switch schools, but he refused.

Marcus is going to face the full fallout of what it's like going from being the top of the social totem pole to being an outcast over night. The people he's called friends for years, will abandon him either out of hatred, fear, or pressure from their peers. How is it gonna change him as a person, and how is it gonna further strain his relationship with his father? These are the prime themes that I'm going to explore with Marcus and I think they provide some pretty solid groundwork for a heap of interesting interactions with everyone else's character.

Worldview is the problem for Esther. The primary issue isn’t the discovery itself, but the mode of discovery through her father’s constructed illusions and dream worlds. She has no recollection of when it began, just that it began at some point during memories that might be fabricated. Knowing which parts of her past that are real and not is a struggle that consumes plenty of energy, but eventually she will feel the cracks of this reality and its cruelties concerning those who are different. When it dawns on her that what she wants for her life might not be possible, Esther might feel a bit lost. The danger lies in the possibility of that disappointment radicalizing her in the same way it did her father, which means that he will have the last laugh.

Esther knows that she can hide her ability unlike others. She feels for those who bring upon the world destructive impulses that causes fearful reaction. However, Esther has a strange relationship with the laws of nature, things of the mind, and action and reaction—all of it is but mud ready to be shaped by someone. Her father once convinced her that she was a cat, but Esther did not realize until after he released her from that perception. The point is that she believes that anyone can be persuaded, and that some kind of agreement can be reached. She forgave her father, whereas nobody else ever did, but that doesn’t mean that what he did was moral.

However, Esther has issues with the fact that she and those like her are considered a separate ‘race’. She knows, through shared memories with her father, what her great grandfather meddled in during the devastating war that Europe suffered at that time, and their view on ‘race’. Esther is strictly against radicals that speak for or against Hyperhumans as being separate, superior, or inferior. She will not bear the Great shame that comes with her name and ethnic history.

Within the first week Jocelyn would realize that she couldn't go back home. Country people aren't dumb. They can put two and two together and come up with four. The weather in turn would be foggy and wet. Eventually Jocelyn would be upset enough that there would be some thunder and as soon as she realized that she could be punished for her emotions since her outbursts cause weather issues she'd try her best to leash her emotions. Tai Chi morning and night. The meditative movements would help calm and focus her.

Jocelyn is not one to think on obtaining positions of authority but this would make her think. Quickly she'd realize that if that is the case then she no longer has a voice. Control of her life has been taken away. This frightens her as well as angers her. She wonders if they will be listed like sex offenders are or if they'd be gathered up and executed soon. This sours her view on Non-hypers, as she likes to think of them, and makes her act differently toward them. She becomes closed off and brittle around Non-hyped. Cautious and quiet she keeps to herself around Non-hyped.

At first Jocelyn is withdrawn and as she comes to realize that they are all the same a feeling of protectiveness surfaces. She realizes that they are the underdog. That they should be afforded the same rights of any human. But they'd also need protection. In between classes and when her attention is not otherwise engaged Jocelyn has taken to making a walk around the grounds or just keeping a wary eye out for people who don't belong.

The change in Jocelyn is present in her withdrawn attitude of anyone that is Non-hyper. Likewise in her attitude of overprotective mother hen. Currently she does not see the world kindly. Injustice is in everything and this sets her on edge and she can potentially be dangerous. She will continue to watch her moods and try to compensate to even out the weather. At this point it doesn't take much to set her off.

In psychology and criminology there is a widespread theory called the theory of the self-fulfilling prophecy of which the application is quite widespread and, honestly, applies to most things if not all. It is one of the major social influences that we put infants, children, teens and even adults through without realization -- this in itself is not neccessarily a bad thing as this 'power' can be harnessed for good, such as forcing someone to become a better person through imprinting it on them through 'prophecy.'

It can also be bad -- tell a child that they are good for nothing, useless, or criminal often enough and they will in turn start believing it and, eventually, begin acting like it too. Through this methodology you can essentially condition someone to become a criminal, an emotionless husk of a person or a robot.

To think that this was, and is, not the case for hyperhumans would be missing the point.

Jiao-long has gone through extensive imprinting during his childhood, like most other children, whether he realizes it or not. The decision to study finances was not his and, before he realized his power, the decision to 'take over the family business' like he was expected to was also not his. They were imprinted on him like a prophecy and eventually he began believing that this was what he was meant to do.

After the discovery of his dormant powers as a hyperhuman, Jiao-long was regarded differently. Not neccessarily a threat, as his powers were relatively 'low' on the actual danger scale given how many people occupied the area, and the effect of this on the electromagnetic fields in the area. Rather, he was regarded as a curiosity, a 'thing' much less a 'human,' much less a teenage child trying to find himself.

His power meant that he could not reasonably take a seat on the board in the family company any longer (something that he resented at first, since his 'destiny' or 'prophecy' was taken from him -- something he later began to enjoy as he realized he never truly wanted to spend time there anyway, a direct effect of the self-fulfilling prophecy he had been subjected to). His power also meant that he was 'special,' and while this meant a wild variety of things, it also meant he was not like the others, and in a society driven by prestige and wealth, he now possessed both of these.

Yes, being regarded with fear and a mistrusting eye everywhere you go was not always positive. But fear is a form of power too. And being able to grasp that power was, in turn, empowering.

He grew out of this mindset eventually, particularly after he realized that people seemed to generally mistrust him more and more, especially his own family who had originally taken great care to meticulously groom him and had now cast him aside -- a failed project -- and replaced him with another cousin of his, or something to that degree. Fear was empowering in a way but it also shuns people.

Well, if they said he was dangerous, he might as well become it right?

While some found the abrupt manifestation of their powers detrimental to the livelihood of themselves and others, Benjamin found quite the opposite. In fact, he not only was unaware that his power was actually a power during its initial manifestation, but it actually brought him a great deal of solace. A blessing if you will. What he had believed to be nothing but a dream, or perhaps the residual energy of his father reaching out to him, he did not shy away from that first night that he astral projected to his father's grave. Under the moonlight, he'd speak to him and cry, and relinquish all the emotions he had kept stifled and repressed throughout those weary days.

And then he moved. And the one thing in this world that had brought him peace, hope, and some semblance of comfort, had suddenly been stripped away from him. Maybe it was the distance. Or perhaps it was some other force driving a wedge between. Either way, he soon realized that he was no longer able to visit his father every night. And his power was no longer a blessing. It'd had felt like such a lie. Ephemeral visitations he was no longer given access to. And for what?

Why?

His existence was exactly what society was trying to tell him all along. It didn't matter that he had a mother that loved him and brothers that stood up for him. His power was nothing more than a nuisance. An abnormality in the grand design of humanity.

Why did I have to be this way? he often wondered. Not that it'd do him any good anyways. Even if he were to find some kind of acceptable philosophy, would it matter? He knows the science behind his mutation, but the knowledge does little. Though maybe a day will come when they can eventually remove the Hype-gene. That curse of a chromosome. What it'd be like to be normal again. It's hard enough being a teenager. And yet, the most frustrating part of it all isn't that he has this power. It's that non-hyperhumans have no idea how good they have it. Being simple. Being normal. To live just by living. They say our powers are an aberration. And they're right. They were always right.

Take it then! Take it away. Take it far away...
