@Omega Man I probably would have submitted some kind of Constantine-esque Mystical character but you've already got a mystical. Looks like Super Soldier, Sharpshooter, Feral Man, and Size Manipulator are all that's left, and I'm not sure I'm really feeling any of those.

<Snipped quote by Weird Tales>

My understanding is that it's not first come first serve, but a spread of archetypes might be ideal - so we can have more than one demigod, for example, but demigods might not be accepted if we have plenty of demigods and other stuff is lacking.

Am I understanding that right?

@Weird Tales SL got it right with this response. The archetypes are just in place so that we don't get too many heroes with similar MO's or backstories. For example, one of my older Young Justice games had a total of 4 powerless vigilantes who used tech. And there were only ever 8-9 players tops. Then when I had a Co-GM take over for me for a few days he accepted a total of three archers. At this point I just don't want a handful of characters with heightened strength/speed/flight/durability on top of other stuff. We have an aelf and something of an Earth angel already accepted.

EDIT: Thought I posted this earlier but it looks like it didn't go through. Sorry I didn't double check sooner...

I was looking at more anime/cyberpunk art for some reference and thought about you literally two minutes before I made that last post. "I wonder where Double has been, been a minute since I've seen that guy...."

If the above post didn't go into why I had archetypes enough, I'll add a bit more with this one. The archetypes were mostly included to give folks an idea of how spread out I wanted the characters, powers, etc. We could have two characters per archetype if enough archetypes are already filled out. And if I view a character more as one archetype than another I'll work them around on my accepted list. For example... Huntsman. I believe his sheet had demi-god listed because he comes from a more fantasy aelf [I really dig that it's elf with another letter lol] species with heightened attributes, however his powers include ice manipulation and he comes wielding a bow. Rather than demi-god, I've got him on my list as sharpshooter.

The archetypes are more like suggestions rather than guide lines. If you think our magic user is more like Scarlet Witch then make sure if you submit a magic user its more akin to Doc Strange or Brother Voodoo. That's all.

Well, I'll also say that I'm really feeling the idea of retired superhero passing his mantle on to a successor. Some kind of Terry McGinnis or Scott Lang type of thing. Granted that could probably be applied to any of the existing Archetypes, but the ones I would favored applying it to the most would be Mystical (imagining an occult detective whose magic sword decides to choose a new wielder and so the old guy has to train the new guy in how to properly handle the weapon's power) or Vigilante (because I always loved the dynamic of Black Canary training under Wildcat or the aforementioned Terry McGinnis example). Somehow I doubt I could pull that kind of thing off with Super Soldier or Feral Man because it would be a massive coincidence for the old character to meet someone who just so happens to also become a Super Soldier or Feral Man like they are. Archer/Sharpshooter, I'll be honest the only reason I'm not feeling that one is because I don't think I want to play a ranged character this go around, lol. And, well, Size Manipulator would just be Scott Lang with little or no difference.

@Kazemitsu You were in my Batman/Gotham RP where we went up against Bane after he killed all three of the Robins [Dick, Jason, and Damian]. Pretty sure you had the dragon man character. Can't remember what screen name I was using at that point, but I was using a guy called Skeleton Jack who turned out to be Deathstroke in disguise. That was right around the time Burning Kitty started acting a fool and tried one upping everything anybody did including shit I made happen as a GM. Glad to see you stuck around!

@Double I dig legacy heroes. So whip something up already LOL In all honesty 'Legacy Character' could have been an archetype. I just came up with half of them based on stuff I had from a previous game.

Definitely color me interested.

What archetypes haven't been given a slot yet? I know the goal is to avoid a spread that's too much focused on one archetype, but I do want to make sure what areas are being preferred currently.

As it stands, I do also have another question, tied to one of the three ideas I'm looking at. Recycling variats of characters I've played before to save me with brainstorming time. Anyways, would a character with their own small handful of soldiers be acceptable for a character who follows an alignment close to lawful neutral?

As for actual ideas

Idea one is an alien archetype with a hint of magic to them. Alien dragon from a far away system that popped up on Earth in the relative recent past, and collects the works of humanity. Various cultural stuff. Fellow can take on a human form to blend in of course. While relatively neutral in the sense he's not an actual hero or villain, could be swayed to the good side. Mystic side would be having access to what his race dubs magic, but is really just manipulating the elements.

Idea two is another alien, but more techno, alien dragon who wanders the cosmos as a mercernary with their own ship. Might have some magic, but is more prone to using advanced tech where they can. Would be lawful neutral, but could be convinced to lean the good way.

Idea three, yeah, another alien, because I like aliens. Leader of a small force that travels from planet to planet, akin to the merc, but is actually a collector. Lawful neutral in that they do follow a set of rules, but also judges civilizations they come across, and thus could lean good or hard into being a "villian" in the interest of making the world better. Depends on how interactions go down.

Fourth idea I had is just doing a techno, maybe a cyborg or something. Not really sure there.

Well this was an unintended dump of info, but if none of these ideas work, I can drop back to the drawing board and see what works. Just found this really caught my interest, and wanted to see what would stick to the board once thrown. Thanks in advance for feedback.

@DocRock An alien with advanced tech would be cool, however the only way you get minions is if you're a villain. An alien merc with two of his boys going from planet to planet would make for an interesting enemy for anyone. Maybe even a short-term ally if @Ruiner's cosmic guy is stranded in space Tony Stark style with no idea how to return to Earth.

Alien merc with tech it is then. Won't have a sheet tonight, since I have to get up early, but I'll certainly sleep on things. Thanks for the clarity all around, just wanted to be sure on things. Wasn't planning full on "hey villain with minions" right away, was more looking at 1-2 underlings alongside the merc. So this works well

Might do a merc wanted by a few space nations due to either doing jobs against them, or just being a general headache, which could then play into someone's backstory if they so wanted, or into ongoing narratives. Being chased by other bounty hunters or space cops can always be fun. Thanks again.

Hey, here's an offer to anyone interested: want to play each other's villains? I have room for a secondary character, and we're a little sparse on villains. If someone wanted, we could make personalized villains for each other's main characters - make the universe feel a little bigger. I think it'd be fun for our heroes to have their own little rogue's galleries, and I wouldn't want to play my own character's personal villain because then I'd be RPing with myself every time they interacted.

Let me know if that sounds neat to anyone!

I'll freely admit to interest over here with my merc idea. Like I offered up above, they could have made foes on other planets, have others after them, or just overall rub people the wrong way. Alien mercs aren't good guys, unless the pay's good.

Archetype: Mystical/Sharpshooter (hybrid class ftw?)

Name: Nick Marlowe

Alias: Noir

Age: 25

Powers: Wields a magic gun capable of channeling the shooter's latent magical power into arcane projectiles. Said projectiles can take on different elemental properties depending on the shooter's emotional state and degree of control they have over the gun's power.

Weaknesses: At the end of the day, Nick is just a man with a gun and nothing more.

Alignment: Hero, or at least he tries to be. Sometimes life has a funny way of making us do things we really don't want to do.

Personality: Loyal, determined, tenacious, occasionally manipulative.

Appearance: [pic or description]

BRIEF Bio:
"Of all the dumps in town he could have shown up in, the kid wound up in *mine*. An' ta top it all off little Abigail lit up for the first time in years. She musta taken a liking to the kid, but for the life of me I can't figure out why. Either way the cat's outta the bag and as long as she likes him the kid's a walking bullseye for our old enemies. I just hope I can show him the ropes before the kid ends up in a body bag... or worse."

Potential Storylines:
GHOST IN THE GUN: Just what's the deal with Abigail anyway? Where'd she come from? And how can she even be a "she" in the first place? The origin of Nick's magical firearm is explored, revealing a tragic origin and an increasing desire for revenge when a certain someone emerges from obscurity for the first time in... centuries?

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY: A case from the past comes creeping back into the picture, forcing Nick's boss and mentor John Mercer to face his sins and perhaps even admit the real reason why he hung up his hat.

THE HAND THAT WIELDS IT: Nick must face the ultimate test when he finds himself cut off not only from Mercer's guidance and wisdom, but from even Abigail, whose power has been helping him survive his previous cases. It's do or die as Nick must find a way to resolve the case and prove once and for all that it's not just the gun, but the hand that wields it.

Notes: John Mercer is a retired masked detective who previously wielded Abigail under the mantle of Noir. He solved many puzzling cases ranging from the mildly strange happenings to saving a city block's worth of innocents from being sacrificed in a sinister occult ritual. Abigail is actually a gun, a seemingly sentient one that appears to be a flintlock from the 17th century, though despite the era is more than capable firing arcane shots in rapid succession. Even Mercer isn't sure where the name Abigail came from or even who crafted her in the first place.

That's fun! I could totally whip up a skeleton for a brutal alien merc, and then maybe we can talk about the two having a history - having clashed before, personal enmity, what have you. Thinking I might channel it into a Big Guy archetype, but we'll see.

As far as a villain for my character, you could play one of his siblings, a Prince / Princess of the Aelves that corresponds to one of the other seasons - cruel, capricious, arrogance, and we could talk a bit more about them and flesh out their world a bit better. Or you could play some other fey creature crossed over from Roisin's realm - an ogre, a centaur, a forest spirit, what have you. You can have fun with it!

Of course, we could always talk more on Discord if this gets one. Should we not have ideas fleshed out enough by then, though, alternatively we could chat in DMs here?

I'll see if after reading your sheet, whether or not I can do a villain for you justice, I'll read up tomorrow!

God the biggest chunk of the serious rework done on Dr. O'Hara. He's meant to be the ultimate wildcard, showing up in people's storylines to be a source of chaos. I'm working on balance, I don't want his personal storyline to be anything much bigger than adding weirdness and existential feelings, bouncing between perceptions, and be the source of some interesting conflicts. It's just hella late right now and I've been slugging at that for awhile. Going to finish it up tomorrow.

I can't wait to see what you've got! The images you used earlier made me think of some type of energy being that's human body died in space. Something like a cosmic Negative Man [from the Doom Patrol]. Depending on what you roll with I may use a cosmic character as a Secondary.

Remember community created sandbox characters are also a thing! Most of the enemies I mentioned in my CS will be of the Sandbox variety to kinda kick that whole thing off and give everyone at least a little something more to go on. Some quick details about some of them....

Asylum - Ever see the tv series Legion? Or check out the Doom Patrol series featuring a character called Crazy Jane? Here's something more recent... has anyone seen Split? Asylum is a man with multiple personality disorder, and similar to Legion and Jane each of his personalities has a different superpower. He could have a personality and power to go up against any and every hero if need be. And if we have any early dropouts... their characters may become part of the Asylum.

Ax-Man - This guy's gonna have a history with my guy whenever I decide what his backstory will be. Essentially a serial killer with a healing factor.

Heartbreaker - This woman can control any male human or animal. Just a word can enslave any man to her will. She's one of the more successful bank robbers on the eastern coast.

the Valentine Gang - All around bag guys with their hands into just about everything from weapons trafficking to kidnapping and extortion. So far none of them have been seen using any sort of powers. What began as three boys and their sister with heart tattoos turned into a gang of roughly 30-40 criminals to varying degrees.

Mountaineer Newspaper - Their Editor in Chief will be something like J. Jonah Jameson and use his paper to trash any hero he can. After his son couldn't be saved years earlier by the superheroes of the city [he died when a building collapsed], the Editor will claim none of them are good enough for the people. He will also spin the truth and claim the heroes are breaking as many laws as the criminals.

^^^ If anybody wants to help me develop any of those for the sandbox of characters players can use let me know!

@Omega Man Those are interesting additions, I can think of a couple ways they can be tied to Noir if we're feeling so inclined:

Heartbreaker - I can see her trying her control thing on Nick, and it even briefly working, but only briefly due to Nick possessing Abigail, who can possibly keep him protected from this sort of enemy mental fuckery and of course, Abigail's a she and thus there's no way Heartbreaker could ever control her in any capacity.

Valentine - I can definitely see these guys as occasional foes for Nick to go up against. Not every case has to be in the realm of the weird and magical after all.

Mountaineer Newspaper - The idea of the Editor's son being lost in the past because superheroes failed to save him could be tied to the ONE THAT GOT AWAY storyline that focuses on Mercer having to deal with a past case coming back to haunt him.
