Imperial Federation
"I did not fail. Things merely... resulted in an unfavorable outcome."
The overseer of the 27th region of the western frontier, an area that includes Fae Creek and its academy. Unlike many, there is some merit to her appointment, born a commoner, she showed great service in the military before getting her position, but she lacks political experience.
She is a short woman who likes to stay in armor and traditional clothing, she believes that there are right things. Tends to be grumpy and pouty, thinking she is looking stern but others just find it laughable (or cute). She has no concept of soft power and political sway. Laura is also very easy to embarrass or to make angry and tends to play right into the ploys of more deceitful sorts.
Academy Staff (General)
"But since we are friends, you may call me Mistress~"
The current Headmistress of Fae Creek Academy, previously a teacher of transfiguration, she is... what you would expect the head of such an institution to be like and her ascension was quite 'convenient'. She looks to be in her early 20s at most, which is curious, considering she has been around for a long time.
Ruthless, cunning and flirty. She is ambitious and she will turn Fae Creek into a profitable business, no matter what. No promises made about the quality of its education though. Despite the fact she is quite infamous, she keeps a friendly persona, sometimes too friendly to any male or female she finds cute, but most people know not to fall for her sweet talk.
"SOUL STONES DO NOT COUNT, ENCHANTED SCRIPTS ARE NOT A VALID SUBSTITUTE."
The role of Director is a pretty new one, encompassing things such as security, transport, maintenance, and finances. Mostly done because the Headmistress wanted to cut high paying positions within the academy.
Droxl used to be the teacher of "Technological Topics" and was always quite eccentric and passionate, he is incredibly reasonable for a lizard man, albeit he does get over-excited easily. Overall a good man.
His objective is to use magi-tech to create artificial life. It seems groundbreaking but has been done multiple times before in multiple ways, Droxl denounces every single one of them as "cheating, totally doesn't count as actual artificial life" and moves on in his research.
"Let's try to take it easy, okay?"
Probably the only soul in the school who actually cares about the students, Bet Eil is the academy's councilor, as usual, she is handed far more tasks than she should handle, is expected to also work as a bit of a hall monitor, breaking fights and deescalating situations.
She has an emphatic personality, speaking in a soft tone and saying things that sound wise, though, like most slimes, she struggles thinking long term and can lack focus, she thinks she can hug the issues away. Her body is extremely malleable, regenerates quickly and is very soft, just try to not poke through her membrane because the insides are extremely corrosive.
"Trash won't clean itself."
In magical academy in such a poor state one doesn't only have to worry about dust bunnies, but also dust jackalopes, skvanders, and al-mirajs. To do the deed you need a team of combat-ready janitors. Izumo, trained in the ancient maid techniques, is the steel minded person for such a task.
She is stern, quiet being, an imposing presence, marching through the halls blades and mops in hand.
The department of white magic is a real anomaly in Fae Creek as it is perhaps the only department which actually works well, yet, most of the white mages are actually magical biologists. Sweiv and Kadmiel don't even have a white magic license or a medical license, they are theorists and researchers who do some medical work on the side.
Mir, the female animal eared humanoid, is a silent type with a background in shamanism, absurdly focused on her work, she was set on fire once and even that wasn't enough to make her stop writing her reports. Unlike Kadmiel, she has an overall idea that their experiments are a bit exaggerated, but she doesn't really care.
Kadmiel, the animal-like male, is a genius, also incredibly lucky, in truth, he has little practical knowledge of much of what he works with, he follows his whims and musings and somehow these lead him to the actual right place... most of the time. If asked, he can't really explain why he did what he did, which probably explain the eccentric nature of his projects. He is often looking for assistants, but its a dangerous position to be in.
Academy Staff (Professors)
Most classes are taught solo, though some need the expertise of two teachers.
"No darling, I got no time for silly riddles and eating you would be bad for my diet."
Celia Reed is a teacher specialized in alteration. She is a very hands off in her approach and often can't be bothered to actually teach the classes or clean up the messes they create, she often just assigns the class tasks and goes off to read a book or magazine. Though, unlike many in the staff, she is actually pretty competent. She is a sphinx but any request for riddles will just result in a sigh.
"Remember boys, never let chivalry die."
The professor of defensive magic, he is a man with a passionate and romantic outlook on life, with often antiquated views and expectations. He used to try to court the Headmistress, when she started calling him puppy he thought he had made it, but she had actually turned him into a dog. He has so far not been able to break the spell, which should exemplify the quality of his classes.
"... Cute."
The professor has a wide area of expertise but they are all related one to another. His machine assisted divination classes help with summoning, and psychic powers are useful to bond with summons as well as helping to create the portals. Overall he seems to be one of the teachers who actually has an objective.
That said, he is often distracted and alienating, either by speaking hours non-stop in a quasi-monotone voice about the math side of the spells or by gushing, also in a monotone, about any sort of small animal or cute spirit he finds.
"The meaning will be lost on you, but do try to follow me."
The teacher of classical studies is also an extremely arrogant person. She really dislikes the fact she is stuck teaching on the end of the world as she thinks she deserves far more. Her tone is strict and she tends to ask for way too much from her class... thankfully she has a bit of a memory issue, especially short term, and she often forgets what she asked the class to do but is too embarrassed to ask them to remind her.
"This is the minimum expected of any proper imperial citizen."
Admas Alemu, is an ex-captain of the imperial airfleet who after retiring due to injury worked for a time in the Imperial Institute of Magic as the oversee of elemental hazards. Following recent events, she ended up getting blamed and was fired from the position, thankfully, her personal friend, the Margrave Laura Deraj, had her appointed as a teacher in Fae Creek.
She is still a bit bitter over those events, and ending up in Fae Creek of all places isn't the best fate. Still, with a stern tone and strict training sessions, she wants to make the most she can out of this, at least for Laura.
"Respect the machine, and the machine will respect you back."
Potira is an actual graduate of Fae Creek, the only one. As a Dryad, there were always certain expectations from her, so it was a surprise that she became enamored with machines and science. As bad as Fae Creek was, at least they allowed her to have plenty of time to learn the craft. She is not exceptional, but her vines can handle machines better than some would expect. She is a close friends with Droxl, who personally appointed her as his successor.
The only issue is that 90% of her fascination with machines is to see them explode, which really derails her classes and make them a hazard.
"Machines only get in the way of spell-casting, I say."
A lot of advancements have been made in the realm of storing spell and magical power in the last century, new types of script, crystal based typewriters, industrial gemstones. Cyrus hates it all, he believes it takes away the proper essence of magic and that everything the 'cityfolk' doesn't beat the tried and true. Some say the reason he hates machines is the fact he has was born cursed with a strong electric field on him, but he will never admit to that.
His classes are often derailed by students who would rather not be stuck two centuries in the past, which often leads the short tempered Magi to bark back at them.
"Famous thief Smiling Phantom? Come on, just because we are both clever, charming and cool? Please."
Nobody quite know from where Su came, the Headmistress simply introduced one day, saying he was an old friend and giving him control over "open air matters" meaning just basically all classes related to the outdoors, though Su seemed to struggled with most of the topics except spellmaking and spatial magic.
He is considered to be a "cool" teacher, often just letting the students have fun instead of having a list of chores, he is energetic and has a strong presence, yet, ironically, he is also weirdly sneaky at times, even without trying. One thing he always put emphasis on is that he is NOT the famous charming thief Smiling Phantom."
