Leonhard

There was, of course, the question of when Leonhard's life had sunk to this point. As he stood and watched the chaotic cacophony that Fae Creek called a welcoming party, it was all he could do to avoid matching the admission officer's spirits. What unfortunate string of events had he undergone to end up in such a situated? Him, the once child of a noble family, relegated to a D-List academy. It was tragic.

But then again, Leonhard knew it would be tragic. His whole life was one big tragedy, and himself a hero with a flippant and vulgar hamartia. By this point, he had learned not to sulk over it. Things did not simply end up well for Leonhard until he made them well himself. He had found, in his many years of struggling against circumstance, that elbow grease was necessary to right what was wrong with his life. The ability to create something from nothing, much like zero times infinity, depended on the magnitude of the infinite compared to the void of the zero. And Leonhard's determination was far greater than his absent talent.

Indeed. This class was a mess. A big one, but it was nothing Leonhard couldn't fix. Each and every single student here, he would ensure that they shine brighter than the top student at the greatest academy. Sure, life could give Leonhard awful circumstances -- it often did -- but those circumstances could be wrought into something grand.

First, he would take stock of the students. He would leave the one's who were more rambunctious, such as the red-eyed demagogue or leopard-folk, for later. In fact, from what he gleaned, he could figure out their abilities during the duel they had scheduled for later, if they do indeed go through with it. As well, he shouldn't waste these first impressions on the more talkative types such as the group forming around the girl with a camera or the choking boy. Learning about socialites would come naturally throughout the classes they shared together. Instead, it would be far more beneficial for Leonard to focus upon those who were keeping to themselves. The beginning of their school life together provided an excuse to interact which may not present itself as easily in the future, so it was crucial to establish a connection at this very moment. That left just a single individual for Leonhard to target, tucked away in the corner.

She was much smaller than Leonhard, and wore some sort of interesting cloak. From beneath it, one could also see red eyes and tufts of silver-white hair. In her hands was some tome while she softly sung some indiscernible notes of irritation.

Determination in mind, the inert noble made his way over to the corner. He sensed something off about her. It would be important for him to narrow down exactly what that is, but for now, he would focus on learning the basics.

"Hey there, my name's Leonhard, but you can call me Leon. Are you a new student too?"

August choked hard at the force, before he stopped, breathing heavily. He looked up at his saviour, straightening himself out and then looking down at his saviour. In fact, out of everyone there so far, he might have been one of tallest, other than a guy with long hair. He felt proud of himself. That was new.

"No! No, I don't need that," August said quickly, eyeing whatever the plant teacher had just handed to AJ suspiciously. "I'm alright now. No need to worry." As if to prove his point, he dissolved into a brief coughing fit once more. "That was the last of it, I swear." She was one of the faculty, but he still didn't know how reliable they all were. August, as he usually did, was making wise and well thought out decisions.

He turned to the boy who'd hit him on the back. Kind of short, brown hair, the kind of person who would let you copy their homework. Which, as an upstanding and high achieving student, August would never do. Ever.

"Better now, thank you," August said with a bright smile. "I've just had a bit of a shock. Nothing you need to worry about - I'm August, by the way, Augustus Walter Lacey-Vane, the Second." He looked at the other boy's face more closely. "You look young, you know. Are you supposed to be here? Do I need to help you find someone?"

Adara

Upon noticing that there was someone standing close to her, she was visibly annoyed by his presence but decided to at least introduce herself too

"The name's Adara, call me Ada if you want" she said whilst looking very irritated.

"Can i ask why you bothered me? If you don't have a reason in particular, could you please leave and let me enjoy my book again"

Yon

She smiles once she hears the shining lady wasn't from the sun. "Oh that is great~ It would be lame if you were from there." she invites herself to pull a chair and sit on it, her big furry ears twitching as all sorts of noise happens around her.

"I am Racuginatza Lincanotl Yon Contedzi Iratza, I just arrived from the moon." she had a hint of innocent glee as she spoke.

Hearing the curiosity about her powers, she looked over the table, finding a fork and a knife. "I make things come alive. Look~" she zapped them with some sort of ray, giving them a sparkly aura. The two utensils stood up and started to jump about, before starting to clash against each other as if they were dueling.

~Mela~

The apple girl had went straight to the welcome party as she had been a late arrival, however, since she arrived, she had been struck in place, lips pressing against each other as she panicked a little inside, unable to take a step further into the crowd.

It was noisy, it was crowded, it was full of scary looking people. It was no place for her. She was just an apple that came to life by accident, why did she pretend she could be like a normal person? If she ever went back to her original form in this party she'd be dead in seconds.

She took a deep breath. At least the sunlight and the wind was nice. She puffed her chest and tried to look proud, like she owned the situation. "Good day fellow classmates, please excuse me." she said with a forced confident smile, gently playing with her hair as she moved towards the punch. It was basically sugary water but what else did a plant need?

AJ sighed internally. Again, with the whole child thing.

"Is that how you treat someone who saved your life? Show more respect!" He said in what was hopefully a commanding tone. He planted his feet firmly on the ground and tried to appear as large as possible. Unfortunately, the height difference of about half a foot made it rather difficult to look down upon August, so he settled for a hopefully-intimidating glare. It was probably more of a pout. "I am AJ Underfoot, and I am a student as well. You would do well to not treat me like a kid."

Leonhard

Hmm? Did Leonhard make a mistake? Adara responded to his greetings, but to call her apprehensive was putting it nicely. Could it be that the book she was reading was important and had to be completed now? Or perhaps Leonhard had come off too brashly, although he was certain he had spoken appropriately. Leonhard pondered this. She was sitting in the corner, by herself, but she had bothered to attend the welcoming party. No. It was not Leonhard's fault -- or at least, he was not the root cause of the issue.

Then what was? Leonhard took a moment reconsider his choices, thoughtfully placing a finger to his chin. Adara was by herself, reading a book at the welcoming party. It wasn't necessary for her to be there to read the book, so surely there must've been some incentive for her to be here; otherwise, it'd be far more practical to read in a more secluded location. Lastly, she was irritated before Leonhard had arrived. Putting these together was enough for Leonhard to piece together the puzzle.

"Ah, you've caught me, Ada. I have no reason in particular to bother you." Leonhard smiled, and lowered his finger. "Truthfully, I just thought that you looked intelligent. And I like smart people, I'm curious about them. So won't you please humour me before delving back into that book of yours?"

Reagan Gideon Breckenridge

Reagan had experience with cats of the mundane variant, and Daria bore a striking resemblance to a feline about to pounce on their prey with relentless fury. He was considering whether to relocate himself before she could scratch at his face or attempt to knock out a tooth or two, when another student stepped between them. Ray was sure he’d peripherally heard an introduction from her, but could only remember that her name was somehow related to the underworld. Is it just Hel? Pretty ballsy name to give a kid if so, he thought. That she was actually able to reign in the enraged Leopardkin was impressive, and Ray nodded at her in thanks.

Daria then gave her parting remarks, to which Reagan simply said, “Noted,” with a quirk of his brow. Once she left, he turned to Feier. “Wasn’t that the most cliché development possible?" he asked, seeking seeking to confirm that he wasn’t the only one caught off guard by that. "Seriously? A duel at dusk? Where is that kid from?” he wondered, openly baffled at this recent experience. “Such a classical example of a brute,” he muttered condescendingly.

With a flip of his hair, Ray shook the odd mood off him, redirecting his attention to his friend and Hel. The latter had a wit and temperament he could appreciate from what little he’d seen, so Reagan allowed a small but genuine smile overtake his face as he snorted at her remark. “I am still undecided if I want to waste my time for the likes of her,” he commented. As the conversation topic was non too gently changed, however, Ray shifted gears with grace and a hidden feeling of gladness.

“Fei and I met at the Institute,” he smirked, offering the green-eyed, black-haired girl in question a fist bump, glancing at her briefly with a sly look. “Right, Fei?" he chuckled. "Oh, and by the way, I don’t know if you’d ever noticed him, since his incident was after you were expelled, I believe, but doesn’t he seem like Lacey-Vane to you?” he asked, pointing to the taller blonde boy some ways away.

Just then, their conversation was interrupted by a slime lady, who forced herself into his personal space and began dispensing unsolicited advice. Ray’s eyebrows twitched. Is this how Daria had perceived him? He empathetically did not want to sympathize with her. He stared down the councilor with a thoroughly unimpressed expression. “Seriously?” he exclaimed for the second time in as many minutes. “All you managed to catch was El’s joke, and you honestly…” Ray trailed off, noticing his voice had raised in pitch. Reagan disliked when that happened, so he stopped and allowed himself a long breath.

“It’s not that kind of a date,” he snapped, honestly disgusted at the very idea, tone souring at the offensive word he was forced to repeat. “The only protection we could possibly need to worry about is the kind that’s effective against attempts on one’s life,” he informed her, lips twisted in displeasure. With a huff, Ray shook his head. Here he was, playing straight man to some naïve, doltish professor. How had it come to this? Reagan had wanted to question Betty if she would truly trust as delicate of a matter as she assumed she came across to his most recent prank victim, but let the matter go.

Instead, he smoothed out his expression, bidding the jaws of his mind to release their firm grip on that Daria girl. “But never mind that, Betty,” he began, tone sickly sweet, “the important thing here is you,” Ray declared, an unholy gleam in his eyes. “I have never been able to confirm this, but I’ve heard rumours, he leaned closer to her, voice hushed as if conveying the greatest of secrets, “that the outer layers of a slime can be used to make the highest quality of jellies,” he concluded, lips stretching into a sharp-toothed grin.

Kate

“Thanks!” Kate said after permission to take a photo had been granted.

*Snap!*

“Yeah, it’s actually one-of-a-kind,” Kate replied to Prof. Thalis’s inquiry. “It was made by an old friend of mine. She liked to call it ‘Nykannis’s Hyperdigienchantech Photographic Implement 3000.’” She chuckled. “Pretty pretentious, right? But that’s Nykannis for ya. I guess she’s a fairly typical mad scientist in that regard.”

It was about then that Bet Eil made her awkward and amusing entrance.

“Oh, cool, it’s the councilor. Sorry to cut this short, teach, but I’ve got something I wanna talk with her about. See ya later!” she said with a wave as she walked over to where the slime was standing.

@stone | AJ Underfoot
"Oh, you're a student?" August said, laughing nervously. His eyes flicked over the gardens for somewhere to run off to. He'd messed up a bit. He put another cookie into his mouth to buy himself some time, to think about a good save. "I knew that. I was just joking, yeah?" Nailed it.

He waved his hand dismissively, flashing AJ his most charming smile. He liked to think it was pretty good. The girls at the Institute liked it, at any rate. Even if they tended to avoid him for his problematic reputation. "Great to meet you. Thanks for the save, AJ." He stopped for a second and blinked. "Hey, does that stand for something? Like, you know. OJ is orange juice. Unless you're... apple juice? Is that a name? Is that your name?"

Helena listened silently to Ray's reactions to recent developments. Apparently he'd met Fei at some kind of Institute. Likely the Magic Institute thing she'd heard stories about. Something about the boy's talk of incidents and getting expelled made Helena wonder what kind of shenanigans they had gotten into in their time there. Still, it wasn't of Helena's concern. At least, not yet.

Then, though, the councillor showed up. And promptly took Helena's joke seriously, earing a soft chuckle from the ice mage. The councillor seemed nice enough, she seemed to have the best intentions in her heart, wanting to ensure that this hypothetical date didn't leave any... lingering concerns. Of course, the councillor did act a bit too quickly, not taking time to really figure out what they were actually talking about.

Helena was about to correct her.

Ray interrupted her.

The ice mage was beginning to sense a pattern.

Ray's response to the Slime Woman's concerns weren't particularly polite. Just like how the boy had reacted to the food and Daria's criticsms of his behaviour. Of course, the latter was kind of justified, it wasn't like Daria decided to be particularly polite about the matter herself.

However, something about Ray's words did not sit right with Helena. Particularly his speak of rumours that slime could be used for jelly. Of course, the ice mage assumed that Ray wouldn't actually go through with what he was hinting at, but it was clear that he was picking on the poor woman, at least to some degree.

"Leave her alone, Ray. She was just trying to look out for us, it's not her fault she only overheard part of our conversation." Helena snapped, forcing herself into the conversation. "I don't care much for these so-called rumours of yours, but at the very least try to pretend to show some respect. And if you don't know how to do that, then I believe you aren't intelligent enough to be here."

As one could likely deduce from Helena's tone, the ice mage was... annoyed, to say the least. Sighing, she turned to the slime woman, and gave her a polite smile.

"I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, miss. Ray and another student had a... slight disagreement, but I convinced them that this party is not the place to settle arguments. The date in question was me joking about how they'd agreed to meet back tomorrow to... talk it out. Sort of." Helena said, leaving out or embelleshing certain parts of the truth. The woman didn't need to know the full story, after all, just enough to get a better idea of what was going on.

Then, she glared at Ray for a moment, before turning back to the woman. "That being said, I do appreciate the fact that you're looking out for us, miss. Don't let Ray's ramblings about rumours distress you, he just needs to..." Helena once more turned to look at Ray, staring him in the eyes for a moment as a few sparks lept from the girl's hair. "...cool down a little."

Daria
Location: Welcome Party
Interations: @blackdragon

Daria's curiosity about whatever the 'camera' was didn't last long as the girl went to speak with someone else. Daria shrugged, turned around, and had her eyes trained on a massive serpent ... who proceeded to say hello. Her own tribe had druids, some of which could adopt an animal form for a short time. She hadn't heard of anyone from her chiefdom attending here as well, but perhaps another group had sent one of their wise ones here?

Based on her previous interactions Daria didn't let her hopes get too high. And that voice didn't sound too powerful or anything. It was still an interesting development though. The cat eared barbarian pointed at herself in introduction. "Daria." A brief pause filled the air as she looked on the strange creature. "Druid in training?" Daria joined the serpent, whoever they were, in eating the rolls however.

Councilor Bet Eil

Bet rubbed the slime under her chin and closed her eyes as she tried to follow the many things being talked about near her. So it wasn't a date? Or was it a rough date? There were some people who you could only date with a proper set of armor. Was it a joke? Was there no meeting? Was it just friendly talk. So many possibilities! The slime could do well on the one on one but this many people together was a lot.

Furthermore, Helena was getting angry, and from the reports she had read this wasn't good news!

"Oh uh, don't worry. I wouldn't be that hurt if you removed my gel. Its not so much of a wall protecting my insides, I would say it is closer to a dam protecting others from the waters within. If I spilled everyone near me would be in so much trouble, a lot of terrible things could happen, only a small spray is enough to melt your leg, and if that makes you lose your balance and fall back into the puddle well..." she gulped and shook her head. Despite describing a quite gruesome event she could cause her tone wasn't an intimidating one, if anything she was soften spoken and the only emotion was anxiety.

"But lets change the topic, please. Its lucky I have met you three here because you two are part of dorm rooms which the Headmistress has already set, due to special circumstances. Reagan and Feier, you will share a room with August, please inform him..." she forced a smile.

"Its not that we think you three will cause events similar to that of the Imperial Institute of Magic..." it was that the Headmistress thought it would be funny, but somehow that was worse. "But instead, we feel like you three will feel more comfortable there as exchange students from the capital."

"And you, Helena, you will be sharing room T1 with Daria, who is a leopard woman with pink hair, and uh, Yon, who is the girl with big rabbit-like ears and a weird tail, also pink hair. The reasoning was... that you three have special needs due to all the extra hair and uhm... let's say that the room you have is quite windy"

She took a deep breath. She needed to take the time to make an official announcement to everyone, but as she looked to the side, she saw another student approaching her. Kate. She tilted her head slightly and smiled towards her.

"Lovely!" Leonhard leaned back, and crossed both his arms. He wasn't sure if his new approach had worked, or if Adara was just tolerating him. Somehow, he supposed it was a combination of both.

"Really, all I'm curious about is your magic. It must be amazing!" Leonhard's eyes narrowed, and he took several steps back. Once again, as before, he raised his right hand pointer finger to his chin in contemplation. "Please, if you're willing, I'm eager to see it in action."

Leonhard waited a moment before adding "I'd be happy to leave you to your devices after if you do it."

"Hey there, Councilor Betty!" Kate said with a friendly smile as she walked up to the slime. "I'm Kate Carson, though you probably already know that," she added with a chuckle. "I was wondering if you wouldn't mind setting up a little appointment for me with Miss Great and Powerful herself. I imagine she was probably a bit displeased when she found out I'd be staying with you guys, but I just want to personally assure her that I don't intend to cause her any trouble. I'm here for a vacation, so I'd kinda like to get things off on the right foot, y'know?"

Feier

Feier wanted to give her friend the benefit of the doubt. After all, Ray had it, right? She tried her absolute hardest to stop herself from interrupting Ray and Daria’s argument, only to realize her friend’s “I got this” and her “I got this” were not the same. She sat there and witnessed the two arrange a fight, before the first day of school even started, over nothing else but the quality of food at a welcome party. All within minutes of Ray’s arrival.

This must be some type of new record, she thought to herself. What seemed odd to Fei was how quick the pink-haired girl was to schedule such at fight. Thirty minutes before sundown. Let us test our constitutions. With phrasing like that, one would forget the trivial matters that made the fight start in the first place. Daria made it sound like an epic battle to defend their pride. Fei knew Ray would be fine because of his portals, but something in her wanted to see how it played out.

She confirmed the boy’s statement on how they met by returning the fist bump but was puzzled by his comment about another incident. “There was another one?” She asked. And August did it, she thought. That was news she wasn’t expecting to hear. Her own expulsion and Ray’s made sense, but she wondered just what the yellow-haired bot could’ve done to end up expelled. The councilor showed up before she was able to ask.

Part of her thought about correcting Ms. Eli’s assumptions. Another part of her thought that the slime woman’s convenient timing would surely result in something to tease her friend about. Thankfully, the woman delivered, and Fei had a hard time keeping herself from bursting with laughter. She looked over towards the pink-haired girl and tried to remember her face. Feier just had to draw Daria and Reagan sitting in a tree once she had some down-time.

The second Ray started talking about jellies was the second Fei wanted to tune out completely. ”Do you know how weird that is, Ray?” She commented. Soon after, her attention shifted over to the remaining catgirl. Just great, she thought, rolling her eyes. More fuel being added to the fire. While the fire mage supposed the other girl’s annoyances were justified, she couldn’t help but think Ray, Daria, and Helena were stupid for taking an opinion on food quality this far. Thankfully the slime woman changed the topic before things got even further out of hand. Upon hearing that she would be sharing a room with Ray and August, all of her annoyances suddenly disappeared and turned into excitement. She bursted out of her seat and to Raegan’s side.

“Did you hear?” Fei asked. Her eyes were fully opened and her brows were up high. Her cheerful nature was shining through again and it showed in how her speech sped up. “We get to share a room,” she said before beginning to look around. “With... with...” She was looking for August, who would’ve been easy to spot again if she had seen him recently. There was a gap between her expulsion and her getting the motivation to apply to new schools. Finally being accepted into another school was one good event (even if it was easy to get in), being able to see one of her good friends again was another, but sharing a room with people that she went to school with before might’ve been the best news so far. It would make the transition easy and the rest of the school year even easier. Now, if only she could find August. Ah! “Him!” She pointed over to the boy who seemed to be talking with... a little kid? Was a teenage pregnancy the incident that got August expelled?

...

...Okay, let’s get real here.

Ignoring the odd pairing, she turned back around to her friend with a beaming smile. “The slime lady said we should tell him, so can we go over and talk to him? Pleaaase?” She asked, anticipating Ray’s answer. Maybe the two of them could meet August’s kid friend as well. Although, now that she knew she would be sharing a room with Ray... maybe she would wake him up extra early for his duel?

Helena slowly calmed down as the slime woman spoke, the ice mage listening with interest to the woman talk about the gel. She didn't know that that was how the councillor's body worked, and the young mage was always interested in learning things.

Then, though, she began talking about dorm rooms. Apparently she was going to share a room with Daria and... whoever Yon was. A quick look around the room later and Helena has a vague idea who Bet Eil was talking about. She wasn't exactly sure what Yon was, but she seemed like a nice enough person from this distance.

Still, the topic change gave Helena an excuse to distance herself from the conversation and take a moment to cool down. Giving the councilor a polite nod, Helena took a step back.

"Thank you for the information, Miss, I look forward to seeing the room I'll be sharing with my roommates, and seeing what would be windy about it." Helena stated, smiling. "But if you'll excuse me, I've got cookies to sample."

With that, Helena stepped away from the group and over to where the cookies were. Taking three, she put one in her mouth to eat as she moved to sit some distance away from the others, taking a deep breath and trying to relax, hoping to calm down.

"It's actually not that amazing, I would even call it below average." She said with a hint of sadness as she seemed to remember something from her past.

"I'd show you... but I don't have the resources to even show it in the smallest bit right now." Adara added, seeming to become even sadder and pessimistic, clearly unhappy to talk about it.

"If you want to actually see it, I can show you some other time when I have what I need for it. But as of now I can't show you anything.

"If you want to see some magic, you might have more luck with someone else."

"Animation? That's a pretty neat power," Gertrude said with a smile. "Especially once you get some fine control. Here, let me show you what I can do." Taking the other girl's hand, she concentrated for a second, focusing on her devotion to the gods and their love for her. In an instant, Yon would feel all her aches and pains go away, from the most serious injuries to the simple hurts of life.

"There you go. That should make you feel better."

"No, jussst a shapeshifter. All that busssinessss with the plantsss and the land... not my cup of tea." Sarah would have shrugged her shoulders- if she had them. A realization came to her. "Oh, I never introduccced myssself. I'm SSSarah."
