The plan had gone… somewhat smoothly. Umber had been a bit surprised, and Darius hadn't thought about how he would land. Still their objectives had been completed. Umber didn't want to share the same fate as Xenelith and Darius wanted…
The barriers are down and I'm out. Myra please leave! You can get out! I DID something! You hear me Mal?! I DID something!
Now I have to keep from crashing into the ground. Luckily, he was saved by Azriel, who caught him just in time. Umber caught himself using his telekinesis, his body never even touching the ground.
"Oh shit!... Thanks." Darius turned to Azriel as she had surprised him a bit. Now she seemed to want answers. His lips parted, but Umber spoke first.
"Aklenroth would have sacrificed us all to eliminate his enemies… Darius and I simply agreed on putting on a show to live another day… and so he could save his demon friend." "Wait wait wait! So you thought that thing…" Darius pointed at both Umber and Azriel.
"That you BOTH Yugioh summoned into the ball was gonna wipe everyone in two minutes and then we were just gonna let him go on his merry way? And what the hell is up with that black fox thing?! Is that ours? It looks like ours!" Darius continued to rant on and on while Umber focused his communication to just Azriel.
"Azriel… I think it would be best to kill this one. He cannot be molded. He freezes…"”No.” Azriel stated firmly out loud as she whirled on Umber. She’d been quiet the whole time, listening to Umber’s explanation and then Darius going on his rant. She didn’t dare stop him as it was obvious he needed to let it out, but it was Umber’s comment in her head that finally broke her silence.
”You will not touch him and you will not harm him in any way. He is young and still has a lot to learn, yes, but just because you are losing your patience in your old age does not mean you simply get to rid yourself of him.” She knew Darius would likely be confused at hearing only one side of the conversation, but she didn’t care. She stood in front of the human a bit protectively now as she stared at Umber with her arms crossed.
A low growl emanated from Umber. Darius was confused, wondering what Azriel was replying to and why she seemed to be taking a defensive position in front of him. He raised an eyebrow as he watched the demon's eyes narrow.
"You should know well that I do not need to touch him to kill him. I could do it now if I wanted. With or without your consent… but perhaps I should let you play with this toy until it breaks. All so you can come back to me in the end.""Is he talking?" Darius questioned, but was treated as background as far as Umber was concerned.
”Oh I know full well you could, however if you do I will show you just how well you’ve trained me.” Azriel ignored Darius for the moment as well as this confrontation had been in the making for a while.
”Or perhaps I’ll find your precious Elsea and eliminate her. Then you’ll have lost both of your little toys.”"You will not touch Elsea!" Umber teleported a few feet forward so he could be right in front of his apprentice, if he could refer to her as that now.
"She is mine! Darius stared at Umber. There was conversation going on, but he only had half the details. He grunted.
"Hey I'm right here! What's up with the secrecy. I helped get us out. You could at lea-""Silence!"”Ah struck a nerve I see.” Azriel said as she giggled at Umber.
”Just remember that I am what you made me Umber.” She said before glancing over to Darius.
”So my dear Umber here believes you are useless and wants to dispose of you, I beg to differ. I see your worth and I think you are very much worth keeping around. I enjoy you, Darius.” She told him, giving him a genuine smile. Darius could only return an uneasy smile as he was made aware of the topic of discussion. It was no wonder Umber seemed disgruntled.
"Maybe I should go or something… And thanks I guess?" Darius said nervously
"You are what I made you? That may have been accurate before this mess of a ball, but this human has changed you. You feel for him like no one else before… That is the true reason why he should be disposed of. Not because he is useless, but because he is a problem… So, Azriel, rather than stain my hands, I shall present you with a choice young girl…" Umber had referred to Azriel by this when he had first found her.
"Him… or me." Umber floated backwards some. Darius scowled at the demon.
"Fuck him." Darius took a step forward to stand beside Azriel. He turned to her with a smile.
"I enjoy you too. And it's clear he doesn't." Azriel’s heart had begun aching when Umber presented her with an ultimatum and her blood went cold, however Darius' words seemed to lift some weight off her. She turned to look at Umber again as she slowly came to the realization what her decision was.
”You know it’s really rich coming from you that Darius has changed me while you’ve been over here obsessing over a human of your own. You wanna know what I think is really going on? I think you’re scared. You’re scared because I’m finally thinking for myself for once and I don’t need you anymore.” She didn’t even waiver as she spoke these words, they came surprisingly easy to her and she felt there was truth in them. She wasn’t just saying them to try and hurt Umber, she meant every word.
”Darius is right, you don’t enjoy me anymore. You made that painfully clear. So go, find your little Elsea. Perhaps she can be your new family, because I can’t anymore.” There was fierce determination on Azriel’s face.
”I choose Darius.”Umber was silent for a short moment as he stared at Azriel.
"So be it. Twist your toy until it breaks... while I make mine last longer than even you." Umber got ready to float away, but caught sight of something flying their way from above. A Winter Fairy.
"Farewell!" Umber teleported in order to dodge the ice dagger and continued to teleport away from the area to leave Darius and Azriel to their fate.
Darius looked to Azriel with a serious expression and gave a nod before quickly devising a plan.
"Now it's two on one Angel of Death! Leave or die!" Darius threatened. He hoped Azriel would leave. Not to only spare her, but to put himself on the side of the rebellion.
There was still a small part of her that broke as Umber left, realizing something so big in her life was actually over, but she didn’t have much time to dwell on it as she saw the ice spear heading for her. Swiftly she used her mithril wings to shield her from the weapon while giving Darius a brief look of understanding. She looked up at the familiar winter fairy and felt a small twinge of sadness as she realized she may have botched that friendship as well. She had a part to play, however, and could dwell on things later.
”I have no shame in admitting when I’m outnumbered. Have fun with your little broken rebellion.” She said to Bowyn and Darius with a giggle before taking flight, flying off towards the trees as fast as she could. For once in a very long time she was alone, truly alone.
