I think obviously everyone wants as many people to play the game as possible. Most of the sheets look great for damn sure. I think Onarax's point about character retention is an important one too. But it's pretty obvious we're dealing with a game that exploded in popularity, probably more than Inedible was expecting (I've been there) so it's hard to blame a GM for wanting to pare things down to something manageable. There are a couple of ways around this, depending on what we want for group size. A co-GM is an idea that might take some weight off Inedible's shoulders, especially if they're already considering two groups within the game.

Another possibility, if we do get pared down to 4-6 players, is to just assume that everyone else is still in the school. It is an academy, there's got to be more than half a dozen girls enrolled at a time, right? If retention becomes a problem and someone drops, all the sheets here have already been given at least a tentative thumbs up - poll who's still interested who might not have been immediately picked and then give them a chance to slide into the action.

Come to think of it, Hasta is literally on top of (or right next to) Paris. Sure, most of humanity's cities got wiped off the map and the Sanctum cities were built to house people, but it would be hilarious (and yet heartwarming) to see the City of Lights not only survive the apocalypse, but thrive (even if they changed the name for some reason).

When I was thinking of Sanctum cities to pick for my CS, I kind of figured in my head most of them had originally been built on the backs of ruins of major cities, or repurposed from old cities that would have been able to support arcologies in the first place - places like New York City or Paris. Hell, New Vegas was able to do just fine for itself in Fallout without any magical girls. Unless you count my bae Veronica.

i mean i've been campaigning pretty hard against this even if it may cost me a spot for it

To me this is the most sensible option. There's no reason *not* to keep a "reserve list" in case of drops. Give priority to those who wanted to sign up from the start, and if that pool's exhausted due to no or negative response, start scouting for new players (if so desired). Granted it would mean some don't get to play at the start and that runs the risk of them losing interest later down the line even if a spot opens up, but it's a better option than taking on the burden of more players than is needed.

I also dislike campaigning for co-GMs. It's better for the GM to spontanously want a co-GM they think is right for the job rather than the players suggesting they take one on, since it's a position inherently governed by trust. A GM that doesn't trust their co enough leaves the co with too little power, and a GM who trusts a poorly chosen co too much runs the risk of the co-GM running the show in their stead.

There's no real perfect answer to these things, everything has its pro's and cons. I'm pretty cynical by nature, and I've been around for a while, but I also recognize that uh

I don't

have the best track record when it comes to people wanting to RP with me, specifically

Momentai. Whatever happens will work out. No use getting upset about it either way, we can only voice our opinions and then go with the flow.

There's also the possibility of splitting the cast into teams, RWBY-style, as a way of organizing character interaction and such, but I'm fine with whatever Inedible decides on doing.

I just feel bad for the people who won't get to play...

So a few questions about the setting, regardless of whether or not I get accepted:
  • What's the general technology level? What's the level of available consumer electronics? Are cellphone/smartphone equivalents commonplace, or are they expensive enough to be property of the rich only? What's the status on the global information network, and is it connected by cable or satellite? If by cable, are those being attacked by Nox, or are they generally ignored?
  • What's the global population level at this point? Sure, the world's population has dwindled greatly since the attack of the First Void a hundred years ago, but how many humans are around now? Several hundred million? A billion? Also, what year was it when the First Void Incident happened, or has the old world calendar been lost too?
  • Where is the official capital of the Imperium? I mean, we know the DuoDecim rule the remaining 23 Sanctum Cities, but there seems to be none for the Imperium to rule from. Or will you reveal it once we get to the game?

Okay, submission are closed.

I didn't expect quite this much interest in the game, which has been both pleasantly surprising and also forced me to make the difficult choice of pairing down to a manageable crew. There were a lot of really great submissions, and even if you didn't get picked I'll be keeping those who have applied in mind if any of the chosen players have to drop for some reason.

The final picks are:

Those folk may post their characters in the Characters section.

I have also created a Discord server for the game, kindly join that.

I'll give everyone a day to report in before I kick us off with an IC post.

Thanks!

Answers to setting questions:

  • Technology is near-future for the most part. Basically what we have today but just a bit better. Electronics are smaller and faster, smartphones can fold, public transit is improved and a workable solution for most people.
  • Global communication is still a thing but all connection is done via satellite. Due to no ongoing maintenance and interference from the Nox that blankets the earth said satellite communication can get pretty dodgy sometimes. Communication is thus much easier within a single Sanctum City, and gets slower/more expensive from one city to another.
  • Global population is less than a billion, around 3-4 hundred million sounds like a good number. I'm going to take the easy way out and not give a specific year, but somewhere between 2050-2100.
  • I'll have to add it to the map, but the Imperator sits at the city of Nova Roma near the Black Sea.
  • Notably Nova Lux and the largest military academy in the Imperium are both located in Palmyra. Though this is outside Nova Roma and technically the Imperium's center of power, House Mars control of the city is nominal at best.

To those who made it, congratulations. To those who didn't, well done nonetheless; I seriously expected to be voted out, your characters were really good. It's a shame not everyone could join, but I look forwards to seeing you guys in other threads.

  • So about 10M per city, though I imagine some cities would be more populous than others; Acyra, Palmyra, and Calcaria would be positively bustling by comparison to, say, Dertona or Ceres.
  • It's Istanbul/Constantinople, isn't it? :P City of Cities, back in its former glory.
  • I see. I'm wondering if you did this to give the setting a Japanese flavor (Palmyra would be the closest place for Japanese refugees to land, though one can argue little Tokyos exist across all the Sanctum Cities) :P

I'm honestly surprised I got in, too.

There really was a lot of great competition, and my condolences to those who didn't make it.

That said, I just posted Dana's CS in the characters tab.

My sheet is up. Changed the name of the Gladius to be Groß Eisen for a consistent name, added rollerblades to her Ars Magia outfit.

Sooooo... I can see that one of the characters hasn't posted in 9 months... but it looks like someone new has already long-since jumped in? Is there room here? Because I may be interested with a post rate this generous. I'm guessing not, since it looks like the full team is only 5 players? That's unfortunate.
As an aside, the Discord link is old or broken.
