I think "most people," are "succeeding," because a lot of them are just joining already existing RPs, or they have been around n the site for a long ass time and have developed either a good reputation or a group of people they can write with/rely on (or it's both of these things). Also, I think the vast majority of people on the site are looking for group RPs, and so end up in group RPs.

Beyond that, uh, it's a matter of luck, timing, effort, etc.

@yoshua171
Luck isn't on my side at all, even my max effort it never seems to be enough as โ€œmost peopleโ€ are not only โ€œsucceedingโ€ but some flaunter about it. I tried and I just know my luck sucks, my effort has no payoff at all despite trying ever since I have been here. Seems like everyone has good luck but me. Even if by joining group RP's they never had the unfortunate experience of having it die as soon as you join it.

Maybe feel happy for other people's successes other than desperately miserable.

Look at Interest Checks for RPs that haven't launched yet. And for f***s sake don't talk about your luck in them. You need to put your best foot forward. Part of RPing is being sociable and confident enough that people think you can join their little story, get along with everyone, and add a little to it.

Keep checking Free/Casual/Advanced. Find a few stories you'd like to join. Develop some character sheets for them. Save the Character Sheets in case the RPs die. Subscribe to the Threads. Wait.

While you're doing that settle on one RP concept you really like and go all out on it. Develop the setting. Do the formatting up nice. It may be flash to you but to others it's a fundamental part of the experience. If you want others to join you you have to appeal to them a little. It's why men don't live in caves with dogs gnawing on bones. We want partners.

Edit: For clarity both man and dog is gnawing on the bones in that little story.

When someone puts effort into their interest check, often they will put effort into the RP itself. A good check shows you are willing to put in that effort.

Ambra...How could I feel happy about other people and their successes if they flaunt it as often as they do like waving a flag around? I can't get happy when that is all I see and couple that with others always finding success.

And for Bongo, I don't talk about my luck in them. Whenever I put my best foot forward it doesn't get me anywhere at all at the goal of what I want either when I feel I know the results of doing that and it'll be a bust you know?
I have checked Casual more often than free or advanced and it seems like no one is doing anything that is even interesting to me, sure there was one that had bumped before I responded to it but nothing came out of it.

And how am I supposed to settle on one RP concept when there is multiple that I want to do/have under my belt and have that feeling of success and interest in the scope of things?

Think of it this way. I'm a writer. I'm 25 years old. I want to be published and have jobs at a publishing company/be a professor. When I see others who are younger than me and are already published/an adjunct, do I mope? Do i hang my head and cry??? POOHEAD's probably younger than me and he has several books published. Instead of being jealous/sad, I like his status and hope he enjoys his success. If you're just constantly jealous/envious of people you have a very rough life ahead of you

honestly its not super hard to make something "approachable". I'm not the authority on aesthetics, but some people do like my aesthetics (others dont but acquired taste or whatever), so my general tips are:

> have a header with the title large above a centered image that represents the roleplay; image height shouldnt be smaller than 250px or taller than 700px

> break your information into sections and have a header smaller than the title above it (i typically have premise (where i give the story bit), setting, ooc information, and rules)

> use some varied color. nothing is more offputting to me than a block of white or a block of xyz. pick a color, make it the color of your headers and title, and either leave the rest white or color it gray (my preference)

thats really the bare minimum i look for when seeing a roleplay idea. it doesnt have to be impressive, it just has to be dynamic enough that i dont start to glaze over when i read

"what does success mean for me as a GM/RPer"

Honestly, even if the rp dies, so long as I had fun and had good memories, I consider it a success? Idk in my head a rp dying =/= failure per se, though I guess you can argue it depends on when it died. Failure to launch rps are easy enough to discern I think

He's older and I think they're either self published or E published. Not to take away from the point. One mans success is not your failure. If there is room in the world for erotic novels about having sex with Bigfoot, the Coronavirus and a pack of velociraptors then there is room for whatever shit you want to write about.

You just need to settle on one thing to write about.

Actually I am 29, but I do appreciate it. Also I have one indie published book, but I do have one work under contract and am hoping to get another very soon! @BangoSkank

But, they are right. There's PLENTY of writers that are more successful than me. I barely have my foot in the door. But hey, honestly the fact that I'm not well known yet gives me drive. It doesn't make me feel inadequate.

Here's a relatively simple Character Sheet I started but never finished for an RP. It's just font sizes, colors, alignments, and that's about it.

Used some Westerny Colors and made an outline for the sheet. Not a tremendous amount of work. Hardest part was finding Hex Values for the colors but that's as simple as a Google search.

Edit : Congrats on the contract work Pooper.

@Ambra I am vexed. Frustrated because I do the same things as everyone and yet they get results and not me. I put in the effort and work but I don't get the payoff, I don't get the interest and yet they do so of course it is going to be frustrating even to the point of jealousy because I feel shafted [getting the short end of the stick] over and over again as I want my success and fair shot too.

When it comes to using aesthetics or the topic of them, I'm not a fan of aesthetics at all really. I'm one never to have the need of things like that as I'm more about detail and fundamentals in terms of choice and orientation of things in an IC. I don't think adding color would make that big of a difference.
