This is the story you know.

Jason Todd was born into poverty, growing up in Gotham’s crime alley. The son of mafioso-wannabe Willis “The Score” Todd and a prostitute named Shelia Haywood, Jason miraculously survived infancy, with Gotham’s underfunded Child Protective Services either too inept or too overwhelmed to take much notice of the boy growing up in crack houses and meth labs. His mother had custody until an arrest for prostitution and parole violation, later dying of a fentanyl overdose. In kindergarten, Jason bounced around several foster homes before the courts placed him with his father and Willis’ new wife, Catherine. Fewer drugs, more beatings.

Then one day his father left for a “big score” and never returned. As soon as his step-mom realized what had happened, she skipped town, leaving Jason alone and confused. Come to find out, the “big score” was ripping off Black Mask. Which, didn’t take long for Mask’s thugs to come around, looking for anyone at the Todd residence. They ransacked the place, beat Jason, and said they’d be back. Jason didn’t intend to be there when they returned, bailing out onto the streets.

He got picked up by the cops a few times. In and out of foster homes again. In and out of juvenile detention. In and out of school, slowly falling into an abyss of crime, poverty, and homelessness that seemed to define life as he knew it. One time he ran and managed to last a week on the streets. He saw a cop pull a car over for a traffic stop, with a box of doughnuts on the seat of the empty patrol unit. He figured that could be dinner and the cop wouldn’t notice. Instead, he wound up in the chase of his life for a couple of pastries that represented his first chance to eat in more than a day.

Which was when he ran into the Batman.

Seriously, he’s getting chased by the cops and the goddamn Batman for a couple of doughnuts.

You’d think he’d just jacked the tires off the Batmobile...

Welcome to Robin Year One. Well, Robin: The Next Generation Year One, anyway. Only hopefully without all the awkwardness of pre-beard Riker. (Where you at, Star Trek fans? I know you feel me on this.)

As much as this is exactly what it says on the tin (a Post-Crisis Jason Todd), my goal is to vary up the storytelling by alternating between stories that focus on Jason and Gotham with stories that broaden the narrative by crafting a version of Outlaws/Young Justice to be another literary outlet. In doing so, I hope I’ve adapted a mix of characters that won’t step on anyone’s toes or be disruptive.

So, I've included the team roster for illustration, but this is a Jason Todd POV. The Outlaws/Young Justice piece just gives me a way to alternate so I'm not just focusing on Gotham stories with him and can change it up to keep things fresh.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

The Bat-Family characters are obviously shared with @Roman. Inclusion of a Green Lantern coordinated with @Hound55.

Alfred Pennyworth - Jason’s nemesis. The man is a supervillain, Jason is certain of it.

Dick Grayson - Nightwing. Hero of Bludhaven and a big brother/mentor for Jason.

Renee Montoya - A Gotham police officer who works as a school liaison officer with the Gotham public schools.

Al-x - A Green Lantern cadet (and the self-appointed leader of the Outlaws).

Tandy Bowen - Dagger, a teenage vigilante who draws on the Lightforce.

Tyrone Johnson - Cloak, a teenage vigilante who draws on the Darkforce.

Mar (they/them) - A young Plodex recently hatched in the sewers of Gotham.

Dr. Bradford Thorne, MD - The brother of Rupert Thorne, running a free clinic in Crime Alley. He tries to do what he can to help those hurt by his brother's crime and drugs, but often winds up getting sucked into the criminal underworld by family.

Rupert Thorne - One of Gotham City's councilmen, who runs the Tobacconist's Club, which is a front for an organization known as Leviathan.

Waylon Jones (Killer Croc) - Rupert Thorne's enforcer.

William and Andrew Mallory (Wrath and Scorn) - An anti-Batman and Robin formed by the sons of criminals put away by the Batman.

CHARACTER CONCEPT
LEGION OF DOOM

Political Radical Sect / Terrorist Organization ♦ People's Democratic Republic of Latveria
C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

"Doom does not beg! Doom denies death! Doom is supreme!"

In the wake of the Second World War and the end of the first wave of costumed super-humans, most were all too willing to turn a blind eye to the far corners of the world for the sake of returning to some semblance of normalcy. While organizations like the Strategic Science Reserve led investigations into the JSA, behind the Iron Curtain a new power was rising.

Viktor van Domashev, a high-ranking member of Stalin's inner circle from the Soviet satellite state of Latveria, executed a stunning coup in the wake of the dictator's death. Espousing a radical totalitarian philosophy referred to simply as "the Way of Doom," van Domashev effectively split the Soviet Union in two, converting millions to his radical ways and defending his new empire against the forces of the USSR and NATO alike with a menagerie of technological horrors. By 1960, Nikita Kruschev and Soviet ICBMs seemed like a quaint annoyance compared to the threat posed by the man the American press had named "Doctor Doom."

While many feared that an invasion from Doomstadt was imminent, even a mind as formidable as Doctor Doom was not without equal. The brilliant Reed Richards quickly rose to prominence in the West, and he and his family of misfit adventurers dubbed the "Fantastic Four" (a team of "adventure scientists," a name carefully picked to avoid connections to the controversial super-heroes of the 1940s) would stymie Doom's attempts at global domination time and time again. In 1966, Viktor van Domashev and the Fantastic Four engaged in a final battle, with all vanishing in the aftermath, seemingly destroyed. Without the brilliance and charisma of Doctor Doom at its helm, the Latverian Empire quickly came undone, and was reabsorbed back into the USSR. Despite being written off as dramatic but ultimately brief distraction in the wider history of the Cold War, many still believed in the philosophy of the Way of Doom, and Neo-Doomist militias and terrorist cells would crop up over the next sixty years, typically put down quickly by organizations such as SHIELD.

In recent years, however, while the eyes of the world have turned to the likes of Superman and other colorful personae in the West, a new movement has begun in Latveria, Viktor Van Domashev's old seat of power. An extremely well-funded, well-organized, and well-trained paramilitary organization has begun a civil war against the corrupt and incompetent NATO-installed government. They offer stability, security, and national pride in exchange for obedience and service to the Way of Doom. What's more, they boast weaponry and technology that puts all but the most advanced Western technological firms to shame. As neighboring governments try and fail to undermine this radical movement, more and more people become drawn to its cause, seeing a future where they can not only stand on equal footing with the super-heroes of the West, but make them kneel.

What was dismissed as a fleeting bad dream has returned as a new nightmare. The Legion of Doom marches again.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

For starters, I wanted to have a sort of 'universal villain' that absolutely everyone can run up against. I figure we have more than enough shadowy organizations carefully working on secret machinations behind the scenes, so it would be a nice breath of fresh air to have one that's so brazenly out in the open about what they are and what they want to do. It'll hopefully give the heroes some fun material to work with as well, since most of the people joining the Legion have legitimate grievances against the Western-centric super-community, and hopefully this can lead to some stories with interesting real-world parallels without just beating people over the head with heavy-handed social commentary.

I've also just been on a nostalgia kick for the old Command and Conquer games lately, so this is at least partly to live out my dreams of leading the Brotherhood of Nod.

N O T E S:

The Legion of Doom is operated by a triumvirate of Ministers, who maintain a delicate balance of power between the three of them:

Lucia Von Bardas: The newly elected Prime Minister of Latveria, Lucia proudly displays the scars and cybernetic augmentations she acquired during the bloody civil war that ousted the previous government. Wildly popular among the Latverian people, she is the public face of the Legion, frequently seen making speeches and public appearances to portray the Way of Doom as the path to liberating the downtrodden from the yoke of their old imperialist oppressors. Behind the scenes, Lucia also operates the Legion's vast media network, altering and censoring data and spreading indoctrinating material in the name of "combating misinformation."

Kristoff Vernard: Latveria's Minister of Science and Culture, Kristoff sees it as his duty to carry on the brilliant work of Viktor van Domashev. His inventions have catapulted Latveria to the forefront of the technological world, while his printed works expounding on the Way of Doom have convinced countless disenfranchised and disaffected people to join the cause. Many are quick to condemn Vernard's many gruesome experiments on human subjects, but he is always quick to quote his hero, stating "only Doom dares to dream, all others serve."

Bram Velsing: Also known as the "Dread Knight," Velsing is the supreme commander of the Legion's armed forces. Equal parts brash, cunning, and fanatical, the Dread Knight is a hardline believer in the Way of Doom, and especially in its ethos of 'peace through power.'

The People's Liberation Legion: An ever-growing collection of neo-Doomist militias and paramilitary groups, the PLL is a largely decentralized confederation with loose ties to the Legion proper. While LoD agents often fund, arm, and train PLL cells, each cell operates independently, fomenting revolutions, assassinations, sabotage, cyber-warfare, and other destabilizing actions in any nation the Legion of Doom sees either as a threat or as a potential asset. Currently, there are known PLL cells active in Russia, Sokovia, Bialya, Symkaria, Argentina, Japan, and the United Kingdom, and there are unconfirmed cells active in a dozen other countries, including the United States. While most if not all PLL members are volunteers who are devout believers in the Way of Doom, the Legion proper tends to view them as expendable.

DoomBots: the backbone of the Legion of Doom's armies, DoomBots refer to a vast array of robotic and AI operatives designed to carry out the Legion's will. The 'standard' DoomBot is equipped with nano-spring artificial muscles to grant it immense strength, a variety of laser and particle-based weapons, a layered magnetic and plasma shield system rendering it invulnerable to conventional weapons, and electronic warfare packages that allow it to penetrate the most robust defenses. Deployed correctly, a platoon of DoomBots can defeat a conventional army in a matter of days, and severely wound or even kill all but the most powerful of metahumans.

S A M P L E P O S T:

"My brothers and sisters," Lucia von Bardas began as she approached the podium, "After the long, bitter fighting that has seen so many suffer needlessly, we have at long last toppled the rotten, clapped-out regime that had been afflicted upon us for so long!"

A thunderous din of triumphant cheers rose from the throng of loyal followers before her. Next to her on the dais, a haggard, beaten man was forced on his knees, trembling and crying, a pair of green-armored DoomBots flanking him on either side.

"Vladimir Vassily Gonereo Tristian Mangegi Fortunov," she addressed her prisoner, drawing out his long name in almost mocking tones. "Former Prime Minister of an illegitimate government. For nearly thirty years, you danced on strings pulled by NATO, propagating their lies and their deceit. Time and time again, Latveria has been given empty promises of autonomy, of 'greater standing in the international community,' of free and fair trade, only for more restrictions and sanctions to be placed upon us! Time and time again, you signed away land that rightfully belonged to the Latverian people, for the benefit of NATO and EU pet projects that have only done us harm! And each time you tell us to swallow their tripe, each time you tell us to settle for less, you line your own pockets with their dirty money!"

The tens of thousands in attendance roared with boos and cries of anger.

"The people of Latveria have said no more!" Lucia bellowed. "We have seen the way forward, and it is not dancing to the tune of the Western pigs. The way forward is that promised to us by one of our own, the genius who brought us onto the world stage, who made the White House and the Kremlin tremble! This is the way of destiny! The way of fate! The Way of Doom!"

Lucia paused to bask in the cacophonous applause, before turning back to the beaten man.

"And your doom, comrade Fortunov," she said, drawing a pistol from the inside of her jacket, "is sealed."

The gunshot rang out through the air, followed by another deafening roar of triumph from the crowd as Fortunov's body slumped forward, before falling off the dais and into the crowd, who proceeded to stomp and tear at the corpse until there was nothing recognizable left.

"The Way of Doom has saved the people of Latveria, my brothers and sisters," Von Bargas beckoned, "but our work is far from over! There are many yet who still cry out under the lash of the corrupt and the incompetent. Our brothers and sisters in Symkaria, in Sokovia, in Pokolistan, we hear your call! Our friends and comrades in South America, in East Asia, we share your struggle! Even our perceived enemies in Russia, in China, in America....they, too, will see the way to that shining future! In time, all will know the power and glory of Doom!"

The cheers had grown so loud, the voices of the Latverian people shook the dais.

"Doom," she called out the now familiar chant, "does not beg!"

"DOOM! the voices chanted back in unison, "DOES! NOT! BEG!"

"Doom denies death!"

"DOOM! DENIES! DEATH!"

"DOOM IS SUPREME!"

"DOOM! IS! SUPREME!"

"No, I'm not that guy.."

An ordinary man like any other, Scott Mason is no alien nor Amazonian, nor did he spend years in training. But with his incredible willpower, and selflessness despite being powerless, he will attract the attention of an ancient and primal being. It is thus that Scott will become the wielder of the Green Flame of life, the Starheart, and make a name for himself as the GREEN LANTERN.

Just like his space-faring counterpart, he needs only will to make his way. But unlike the Green Lantern Corps his ring is powered by a sentient magical meteorite. A young man volunteering to step into both filled and unfilled shoes; Please support him as he fights for truth, justice, and American way as the self-proclaimed disciple of Green Lantern.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

Hello, I know what you might be thinking. 'Hey, this isn't Alan Scott, this is might be some weird fanfic oc!' To that, I would say, it will definitely feel like that as I try to creatively use the 'Starheart' entity, and the name Green Lantern. But actually, this is a bit of a joke on my part. Scott Mason is in fact from an official alternate DC universe, where he is known as the Green Guardsman, and he performs just like any Green Lantern. Except the Green Guardsman shows up only for 2 episodes of Justice League animated. There is also the extra detail where this Scott Mason will have a slightly different personality, though will remain very much a hero. If that's no good I do have a backup plan, just let me know.

Now that's the name out of the way. I will explain my motivations and goals. For Scott I plan to pull all sorts of tidbits from various old lantern stories and other heroes as well to create a hero I don't believe we see often enough. I've been thinking about Superman's justification for joining the Daily Planet, so he can know about emergencies as they happen, right? Why didn't he become a cop?

I want to explore that facet of heroic identity eventually with Scott, despite him being an Artist, he doesn't need to stay that way, and I want to be able to show some normal everyday events from the view of someone who largely views themselves as normal. And just might be without his powers, right? Well those are some thoughts into my goals, whether they turn out that way, who knows. Even the ideas for this guy changed a bit overnight, care to guess how?

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

Scott Mason: Aspiring comic artist and hobbyist. Commissions open.

Starheart: Ancient being made of condensed magic from deep space. The source of this Green Lantern's powers.

Alexis Mason: Sister, ???

Arc Proposals:
A heroes' principle: Scott becomes a hero. But just how well will his lofty ideals and heroic dreams fare in the
face of harsh reality. His problems won't be solved with the flip of a page or merely after thirty minutes.
Please! Shout my name!

A problem at the heart: A visit to Nanda Parbat. Ancient evils reveal themselves. The hero can't possibly fight them
all, so which path does he choose? The shadows begin to encroach, they stalk his every move.
Please look for the first lantern's light!

S A M P L E P O S T:

"Hoah!"

A strangely garbed young man shouted, as he flung a fist out, Scott Mason, the inheritor of the Starheart. Only a few weeks ago had he become aware of his predecessor, Alan Scott, and it took him just a couple more to visit him. Scott Mason had thought this old veteran would have important wisdom to train him in, and he was right. But he didn't expect him to be such a stick.

"Scott! For the last time, it's not about being physical! You haven't trained your body like I have yet, if you just keep throwing your arm like that you'll just get ring elbow." An older man standing farther off shouted. Earth's first Green Lantern, Alan Scott crossed his arms and shook his head. "Straighten up your posture too. Heroes have more dignity!"

"Ring elbow?" Scott Mason glanced back at the man, ignoring that last part, and tilted his head in confusion.

"You'll know when you get it." Alan thinly smiled, then his face straightened. "Okay, again, but you have to want it! Really feel what you want, try something that gets you inspired! Surely an artist has ideas!"

Scott placed his other hand on his right arm's wrist, planted his legs at shoulder length, and breathed deeply. For several long moments he stayed like that, focusing, concentrating. All the while, Alan Scott squinted his eyes, unsure of what to think about the newcomer. The Starheart chose him, but if he's this slow has he really been fighting these last few months?

Then a brilliant emerald fire erupted in the air, just a meter or so away from the young man. It grew into a shape, striking a powerful pose with an intimidating physique, a shape that instantly gave Alan Scott a deep migraine. Not even fighting WWII in the trenches was this much of a pain. Scott Mason had been focusing intensely on his image of a perfect hero, someone who had personally saved and inspired him. The Green Lantern, the other one.

"H-hey!" Alan said, more than a hint of annoyance in his voice. "You do know who's training you, right?" He shouted.

"I don't care. You're before my time old man. This guy, he's my hero!" Scott smiled and thumbed his hand at the figure.

"I hate kids." Alan sighed.

C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

“Some would be offended at a wolf presenting as a sheep, but I have learned hard lessons from your kind, so I know the truth … you are all wolves.”

The foundation of the Brotherhood of Mutants formed as a result of great oppression, not initially against mutantkind but under the horrific rule of the Third Reich. Born Max Eisenhardt, the boy who would become Magneto witnessed the death of his family and community first hand, all allegiance his father had shown to the German nation in the First World War forgotten in the racially motivated hatred of the Nazi Regime. A young, broken child, mistakenly buried alongside the dead, would later be recaptured by the SS and subject to the same horror again and again within the walls of Vernichtungslager in Auschwitz. Through lessons learned during his family’s efforts to flee into Poland and beyond, Max survived, narrowly avoiding the worst of the experiments done on populace as the mysteries of mutantkind began to be understood. Equally he was able to aid another young prisoner of the camps, a young girl named Magda. A blight of grave illness delayed the development of Max’s powers, beyond the usual manifestation during adolescence which is common among mutants. Together with Magda he eventually escaped into the Soviet Union, taking on the name Eric Lehnsherr and starting a new life in the Carpathian Mountains.

Eric had not escaped the long arm of oppression, as his powers would eventually manifest while trying to save his young family. For his efforts, Eric was restrained and beaten, prevented from saving his young daughter and terrifying his now-wife Magda in the process. She fled, thankfully not witnessing the destruction Eric brought upon the authorities of their home. Once again a lone survivor, Eric fled into Israel, taking yet another name as Erik Magnus. Here he found perhaps the one peaceful occupation of his life, working as a medical orderly in a psychiatric ward for fellow Holocaust survivors. These years would also result in the defining relationship of Eric’s life, meeting Charles Xavier. The pair had much in common, more than both immediately revealed, and enjoyed each other’s company through the latter’s study of the mind. When Hydra forces later attacked the facility while Xavier was still present as a part of his research, their mutant powers were exposed to each other. While they parted over matters of incompatible philosophy, to think they would end as rivals was yet to cross either mind.

As Eric’s powers grew, he began to work various Western Intelligence agencies, aiding in the hunting down of missing Nazi war criminals and the nascent Hyrda. Eric would often report his targets had died in his pursuit, instead handing over the captured fascists to Mossad, while increasingly viewing the world in a matter of mutants vs humans, he still felt enough connection to his Jewish roots to support their cause of restitution. While the Western agencies were willing to turn a blind eye to this practice when he was primarily focused on ex-Nazis the Soviets were looking to benefit from, eventually the time came when the individual in question had been earmarked for repatriation within the United States in exchange for information on key Soviet projects. As a consequence several Western spy agencies orchestrated a string of attempts to punish, and later kill, Eric. After a particularly brutal string of attacks he resolved to travel to the United States to put an end to those who hunted him at the source, taking on another false name, Magnus Xavier, for this journey.

The choice of name, obviously a reference to the last true friend Eric remembered, proved prophetic as after arriving in New York the use of the surname soon attracted the attention of the true Xavier, recently returned from service in the Korean War. Momentarily distracted from his efforts of vengeance by Charles’ optimism, he assisted in the creation of Cerebro and the first generation of X-men. Ultimately this momentary break from conflict came to an end when the agents who were hunting Eric began to strike at him through personal connections, resulting in yet further tragedy. Driven finally to the conclusion that humanity and mutantkind could not peacefully coexist, and armed with important data from Cerebro, Eric took the name of Magneto and left his work with the nascent X-men to form the Brotherhood.

Using the knowledge gleaned from Cerebro, Magneto was able to recruit powerful and willing mutants to his cause, shortly afterwards creating Asteroid M as their isolated base of operations. Principally among them at first were the Maximoff Twins and Mystique. The membership, even leadership, of the Brotherhood has changed over the years and so has their approach, ranging from supporting partisan mutant factions, championing mutant isolationism and at times, global mutant domination. Their relationship with the X-men has equally shifted over the years, ranging from mistrusted allies to hated foes, several individuals of both teams having even found themselves switching between the two groups of mutants.

Even more pressing to the purpose of the Brotherhood than their ‘cousins’ in the X-men is the changing state of the world and its view of mutants. Regimes have come and gone, the hatred burning on and on. In many ways while the X-men have always shone as the brightness of the world, the Brotherhood have reflected the wrath brought upon mutants and those who support them. They have been the vengeance to Xavier’s justice. In the most extreme of Magneto’s actions he truly threatened the safety of the whole world, although it became apparent that the use of his powers, particularly in the construction and maintenance of Asteroid M, had a powerfully deteriorating effect on his mind and stability. In the greatest of these conflicts, a battle between the X-men and Brotherhood that would eventually destroy much of Asteroid M, the true reality of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver was revealed to Magneto. On the day he lost his first child, he had unknowingly lost twins of his own blood, carried by Magda as she fled from the destruction wrought by her enraged husband. At the time, this shattered the fractured loyalties of the Brotherhood, as much as the physical structure of Asteroid M. With the strain of the battle shattering the last of Magneto’s sanity, even the most cruel hearted of the Brotherhood scattered from his leadership. In a desperate effort to once again achieve domination, Magneto attempted to create the ultimate mutant, Alpha. While successful, his creation rebelled against him, using its distorting power to revert Magneto to an infant. The effect proved temporary, if only from Erik the Red eventually restoring Magneto to adulthood, if not to his same advanced age, the restorative work on him rectified the mental damage his powers had inflicted upon him and stabilised their use. He would never cease to be Magneto, but without the gradual slide into madness resuming again, he abandoned the worst of his aggressive schemes.

In his absence, the other members of the Brotherhood had not been idle. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver spent the interim as heroes of humanity, rather than mutant kind, while the rest fractured, many coming to eventually aid their previous rivals in the X-men while others descended into simple self serving anarchism. By the time Magento’s identity and faculties had been restored, he had no wish to immediately call upon them, recognising that perhaps his children would experience only pain from his sudden return to their lives, and having little need of either the soft hearted or the entirely callous in the new task he had set himself.

The isolated but prosperous nation of Genosha had built its great wealth on the back of vast mutant slavery, a situation that even in Magneto’s calmed state he could not allow to persist. Seeking out the one other member of the brotherhood he could still trust to act in Mystique, the pair set about kindling the fires of a mutant uprising. With her guile and the force of his power it was a matter of months before the revolution swept the island nation. A bloody civil war raged for an extended period, but the mutants were eventually successful, placing Magneto as the new head of state. This began a period of reconciliation for both Magneto and the Brotherhood among mutants, particularly of the younger generation. Painted as a revolutionary and hero, word of his return soon spread from the island of Genosha across the world, and the Brotherhood was reformed, no longer dedicated to violent overthrow of the global order, but instead the preservation of the new mutant homeland of Genosha.

They did not sit idle, however, and were instrumental in rescuing both the X-men, and the wider world, from the ravages of Apocalypse, Magneto stepping in to fill the absence of his old friend Xavier and rebuilding his educational efforts on Genosha. This is not to say the idealistic X-Men and hard line Brotherhood do not still clash, although the conflict is often of a more competitive or theoretical nature these days, the latter are certainly still maintained to do what the heroes of Xavier’s dream could not, especially with the return of Charles to Earth.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

Unlike the X-Men, the Brotherhood does not simply seek to ensure the survival of mutantkind, but to ruthlessly protect its prosperity and security. They may hold hopes of a similar future, but they do not have the luxury of compassion, instead playing the zero-sum game of realist politik. They have abandoned their mad dreams of global domination (at least openly) but will never be afraid to risk, and take, human lives to safeguard mutant ones.

Currently while the X-Men and Genosha react to the return of Charles Xavier, the Brotherhood continues to work both at home and abroad to safeguard mutant (Genoshan) interests, in much the same manner as any secret service of the human world. Difficult choices have, will and can be made. Recently, with yet another upswing of anti-mutant sentiment festering across the world, their activities have increased greatly, hunting down rumours of yet another planned desolation of their homeland, one they are desperate to prevent.

TLDR: Super fun mutant black ops

"You aren't supposed to be in here, trooper."

"No, but you are." As the man turned from the terminal to face the approaching soldier, the features he confronted began to swim and shift, a flash of blue, before they reformed. For the briefest of moment's, it was like gazing into a mirror. A mirror which immediately punched him straight in the throat. The system shock was immediate, doubling over in a splutter of desperate breathing. He was utterly unable to anticipate the elbow, his elbow for all appearances, which slammed down into the back of his head, his cranium immediately rebounding off the desk he had been sitting at, the pain of both strikes only interrupted by the sudden loss of consciousness. The figure now wearing the officer's face easily slid into the chair, drawing themselves up to the station.

"Identification required, please complete iris scan." The security fell away as the body double lent down to provide the reading. Around the capital of Hammer Bay, similar terminals were being accessed as the Resistance launched their great gambit. This, however, was the nexus, the primary access point that could only be interfaced by the highest ranking of the Magistrates.

That, or someone wearing their faces.

Once she had passed the scans, Mystique allowed the false skin of the Magistrate office to fall away, her own deep blue skin swallowing the light cast by the computer screen in a matter wholly different to baseline humans. Her fingers still worked away, inputting the code she had written herself. Some things you couldn't leave up to others, no matter how many hands you could now command. With a flick of her wrist, she placed a finger to her ear, triggering the comm-bead within.

"All cells reporting green, terminating broadcast." As she spoke, the virus placed within each of the government's broadcasting stations began to work, eating away at the code to leave it an inoperable tangle of scrambled data. Far from simply cutting off communication, the psychic signals influencing the minds of the countless slave-mutates began to fizzle and fade across the capital, the greatest main holdout of the Magistrate government. A momentary lapse, before the Brotherhood's transmission replaced it, forcibly played across screens and radios over the entire Genoshan nation.

"You're live, Eric." Mystique lent back in the comfortable padding of the chair as the very same screen she had used to begin the pirate broadcast had the very same message imposed upon it.

From imposed darkness, the figure of Magneto drifted into view, his iconic helm, a symbol that had been rallied to by free mutants across the state of Genosha, framing the details of his face as piercing, charismatic, eye bore into the camera.

"Brothers and Sisters, Mutants of Genosha, bask now in the freedom we have won for you." The magnetism of metal was not the only form that Magneto commanded, the fiery zeal of his words flooding across the nation to both current freedom fighters and those newly freed by the failing mental controls the Magistrates had reinstated since their return to power. "Now is not the time for reconciliation, the humans were offered peace, and they repaid it with throwing you back in bonds, no, it is time they learn what we already know, that there is no place to hide. Rise up, Children of Atom, and claim the future that is our right." As the simple but direct message came to an end, the seat from which Mystique had instigated the broadcast was already empty, the Magistrate slumped across the floor waking up to a Genosha entirely changed in the scant moments of his unconsciousness.

This is where you outline your vision for the character including any notable changes or differences from the regularly accepted canon. This should be a short summary that provides insight into where the character is in terms of their overall progress and development.

Cassandra Cain cares! That’s the best part about her. She’s going to be a bit older before she breaks free of her father’s control, at 17 instead of 8. And I was thinking that she would actually do it during this RP. So at the very beginning at least, this will be pre-hero Cassandra who is sent to Gotham by the League of Assassins for her first kill. She’ll do it, and come to realize that she’ll never be able to do it again and flee.

Her development mentally and vocabulary wise is going to be forever stunted by her upbringing and training. She’s going to be mute for the foreseeable future of this RP until there is a timeskip, and she won’t be able to read or understand the vast majority of spoken words at the beginning. And her fighting is going to be limited and unimaginative, a highly trained assassin doesn’t make her a good superhero.

However her martial skill and her body reading is going to be geared strongly to the high end of her feats and into the supernatural, soul reading, calculus-of-the-universe level skill. One Who Is All, that’s what they call her, the best martial artist in the world.

So throughout the course of this RP she will go from the world’s best/worst assassin, to vigilante, and then Batgirl, once she sees the symbol of the hero of Gotham and seeing how people react to it. How it gives good people hope, she’ll want to adopt the symbol herself.

And Gotham is a weird place, full of weird people, so the places of Gotham that Cassandra is going to go too will be weird and lively and surreal, because that’s my favorite interpretation of Gotham.

Cassandra’s first mentor/ Asian Grandma will be Jackie Fujikawa from Shadow of the Batgirl.

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

Why do you want to play this character, what is the driving motivation behind both this desire and the character themselves. What do you hope to accomplish and where do you want the character's story/stories to go?

Cassandra Cain is my favorite member of the bat family tied with Batman himself. She’s a true believer, and I love how focused she is about redemption. And since this RP is freed from the necessary status-quo of comic books, Gotham can actually, y’know, get better! And Batman will be proven right, and the Joker won’t escape 20 million times and kill 2.5 thousand people every issue.

Cassandra Cain believes redemption is possible because if it isn’t, she’ll always be the weapon her father was going to use to take control of the world from the shadows. But she’s not all about the bad guys, she’s about saving the good guys, too. She’s going to try and build something special and fight crime and corruption at the source, not just the symptom. Some people need to get their heads knocked together for sure, but ultimately violence breeds violence, even the non-lethal kind. There’s gotta be love and humanity there, too. But of course, Cassandra, though she does have a good heart, has been separated from those two things for almost her entire life. David Cain, her father, will be present in the RP and I’m also going to go into their relationship in some arcs, and have stuff done with the League of Shadows.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

I’m not exactly sure who Cassandra is going to kill yet. I could just make up a new character that only is for Cassandra like in the comics, but it could be someone else too if any of the other writers are up for that. To get her more involved in a plot line. I really do just kinda free style these kinds of things because I like it when other people's stuff throw curveballs at me. But yes she is going to be Batgirl and save the day and be the innocent angel/feral goblin child hybrid she's always meant to be.

In the meantime, I’ll write about some of Cassandra’s misadventures while she worked for the League.

S A M P L E P O S T:

Cassandra Cain stared at her reflection in the river. She dipped her scarred hand into it and felt the cool spring water wash over her hand, and the air drift over her face. A fish swam in the river. She observed how it saw the world around it, and as it hesitated in the waters, she narrowed her eyes and saw its intentions like one might detect a scent. As it darted carefree through the water, it found her hand waiting for it. Scooping it out of the water, she held it within her hands and considered its green scales and how they shimmered in the morning sun. How it had lived an entire life before this, and how, if she so chose, it could live an entire life more.

In another time, in near darkness, Cassandra wielded her curved blade. Shadowy figures moved from place to place, imperceptible. But Cassandra knew where they all were, and she knew where they were going. She could see their forms, hear their breathing, feel their will. It was as if she was seeing herself through their eyes. How they feared for their lives, how eager they were to prove themselves. Redemption. Redemption was all they sought. For one reason or another they had been sentenced to death, and if they could prove themselves worthy by striking her down, they would be welcomed back into the league of shadows with open arms. They loathed her, they were jealous of her, they thought her a monster and an invalid all at once. But she knew that on the other side of one-way glass watched her father, and he knew that this was no deadly challenge- this was an execution. Nothing more than practice. Cassandra was better than them. She would win. In her mind’s eye she had seen her bloody victory like an artist captures a muse. Now all she had to do was paint her work upon the world with masterful strokes. Masterly, Cassandra, she thought to herself in images and concepts. She saw how proud her father would be of her, of how he carried himself, of how admirable and heroic his strength and skill were. And in that moment, she felt him on the other side of the glass. Watching the encounter through enchanted glass that let him and his investors witness his weapon at work.

“Cassandra Cain is no mere martial artist. She is not a girl with a sword. She is death incarnate.” David said, watching her keenly. “She is far, far beyond such small ideas as ‘weight class’ and ‘reach.’” The other investors watched closely.

“Her first language is violence. She knows no words other than her own name and select key words an assassin could use to direct and command her.”

“She has no wants or desires except to make me proud.”

A little girl with her hairs tied up in pigtails carefully rose from her straw mat bed. Scaling the walls like a spider she went to her secret spot in the ceiling that she had poked, one night at a time, with her finger. Pressing her eye against the hole in the ceiling she saw the sea of stars above and wondered what was out there.

“No ambitions. No dreams beyond those of death.”

A young teenager took a stick to the gravel and sand and with a few quick strokes, created an image of a face. A girl with pig tails. Glancing over her shoulder, she hunched over her secret and added a bird. A deer. A fish. The sun. One of her keepers approached and she dashed her work away, concealing it safely within her memory.

“She only knows that she is treated well when she kills. When she does as I say. And thus, when she does as you say.”

A cool night on the shale roof. Her father had discovered her hidey hole and covered it up, beat her for it. And yet here she was, up here, with him, on the roof. And with him he had brought drawings of lines and dots, and when he put them into the sky Cassandra could see the artistry of the stars and the Gods themselves. When she gasped with child-like wonder, she felt strange things pulse through her father’s body. Doubt. A pinch of regret in a sea of dark ambition. Swallowed whole by cold, steely resolve. A rough hand took her by the shoulder and back into the complex below. The girl would never forget that. She never forgot anything.

“She is the perfect weapon, and nothing more.”

A rain of bullets. Her skill is an umbrella. For her father it was like he was shooting at a shadow in the corner of his eye. The gun was kicked out of his hand and a blade was pressed against his throat, and despite himself he smiled as he looked into her eyes. Nothing could be hidden from those two perfect blue spot lights. In that moment he saw her as an heir, a successor, but he had to shove those treacherous thoughts away because no one would accept his grand, monstrous experiment as a leader.

“Watch as she works. Behold her majesty.”

The doomed assassins came at her all at once, but it might as well have been one by one. Their blood was painted upon the dark wood with precise, geometric arcs. A single metallic tone as one of their blades was granted the honor of coming into contact with hers. One by one they fell, but it might as well have been all at once.

“She knows no fear. She knows no love. And she knows no mercy.”

Cassandra considered the fish in her hands and the life it had yet to live. How it wanted to breathe again, and how it didn’t know where its home was anymore. Its simple feelings were written in its eyes plain as day. It didn’t see her, but she saw it and everything its simple soul was made of. As she saw the soul of everyone and everything, and felt the roots of people and knew the hearts of trees. Carefully, gracefully, she submerged the fish in the water and watched it swim away.

Because how could one who knows the souls of others not see the one in herself?

During the height of the first World War, the Allied Forces gained the upper hand from an unlikely source; an Amazonian Princess hailing from the island of Themyscria. To outsiders, Themyscria was the mythical 'Paradise Island', home to only beautiful Amazon women, or so the story went. It was only when Captain Steve Trevor was shot down and crashed on the shores of Paradise Island, that Themyscria went from legend to reality. With the aid of Princess Diana of Themyscria, the Allied Forces gained the upper hand and ultimately triumphed in the first World War.

Princess Diana, dubbed 'Wonder Woman' by the media of the time, returned home after the war, having seen enough of 'Man's World'. It was at this time other Amazonians began to wonder about the world beyond the island's shores and so as Wonder Woman and her successors came and went from the island for their adventures, so too did others.

Desiring to see the world outside of Themyscria; the Amazonian, Aella, ventured beyond the shores of Paradise Island and sought out their sister tribe in Brazil. It was here that Aella was seduced by a local deity and would give birth to the child later named Yara Flor. Unfortunately for Yara, her mother was taken from her when she was young, leaving her in the care of her 'Aunt' Renata. Relocating to the United States, Yara would grow up without knowing of her true heritage. To the outside world and even herself, Yara Flor was just an ordinary farm girl living in the small community of Boise, Idaho. As she began to mature, her gifts manifested resulting in speed, strength and other abilities that Renata had not been prepared to deal with. Keeping these things a secret from the world, Yara never revealed them to anyone else until one fateful night, a night when a blonde warrior woman crashed into the fields of Renata's farm.

Five years ago, the world was introduced to a new Wonder Woman when Cassandra Sandsmark took up her mentor's mantle and helped defend the Earth alongside the other heroes who would go on to become the Justice League. This is the same Wonder Woman who would eventually appear above Renata's farm in Idaho. Flying upon a winged steed, Cassandra crashed into the potato fields before being introduced to Yara, asking for the younger Amazonian's help before passing into a state of unconsciousness.

Back in 2018, Master Bruce hosted a little roleplay known as Ultimate One Universe. It had a similar concept to this one and in it, I played a reimagined version of Thor. Aside from making me known for writing sex scenes, it was one of my most successful runs in these style of games and I genuinely had a lot of fun doing it. Now, Sep is doing a fantastic job as Thor in this game, so much so that I find myself with the itch to dive back into the mythological side of things. Enter Yara Flor. A relatively new character, Yara has a lot of unexplored stories and a relative amount of freedom to go with her.

While I will continue to portray Slade, I want to alternate between writing arcs for the two characters. Where Slade I see as a more slow-burn character, given the intention of his stories, Yara has the potential for quicker story beats and more interaction. A big portion of the drive to play her is to interact with Thor and some of the other heavy hitters Slade wouldn't likely be in contact with.

The pushing idea behind Yara is that she has her destiny thrust upon her in the form of the latest Wonder Woman, Cassandra Sandsmark, crashing into her farm field. With Cassie as a mentor and guiding figure, Yara will slowly become Wonder Woman all while battling her way through whatever mythological and legendary fun I can throw at her. I'm excited to dive into her South American roots and explore a side of mythology less trodden. Everyone has seen Norse, Greek and Egyptian done many times over. But South American mythology is a collection of overlapping and intertwining stories that are as colourful as the culture.

GODS & MORTALS

Yara Flor has lived her whole life looking for something more. That something came in the form of the current Wonder Woman, Cassandra Sandsmark, crash landing into the field outside of Yara's aunt's farm in rural Boise, Idaho. Now drawn into a strange new world filled with gods and mortals, Yara has to find her place in all of it and navigate her true ancestry.
