"What the hell!?", Kerry exclaimed as everything around the workshop started rumbling. She quickly walked out of the tent, fearing the Varjans were having another siege on the temple. Yo, what's happening!? Are the Varjans...attacking.....again?

The hornet's statement trailed off as she took in the scene before her. It was like the siege never happened. Fires were put out, parts of the temple were restored, homes were repaired and even the measly stone gates were good as new. In the time Eula and Kerry were having their conversation, the state Terauchi Temple was in before versus now......the difference was night and day. Complete with tables serving tea and baked sweets. A second passed before Kerry realized what all of this was:

A tea party.

And the one responsible for all of this, while also currently laying it into Sorae big time, was...

"Alice???", Kerry whispered in stunned disbelief as she watched the mad hatter give her speech. Part of her thought this was a different person, but from the magical aura the hornet was sensing, this was the very same woman! Glancing off to the side to see another woman eating a plate of tarts, a second of sensing her aura confirmed that that was Carroll! Both the mad hatter and cursed sword were different yet the same! What the hell happened!?

As the mushroom woman strode off toward the hot springs, Kerry shook off her shock and walked toward a table full of treats.

What's that phrase you humans say? 'Don't look a gift horse in the mouth?'", she spoke aloud for Sorae and the other villagers to hear as she drank her tea. It was delicious. "If I were you, I'd shut up and eat my cake where I can get it. Appreciation and gratefulness go a long way, you know."

Not waiting for a response, Kerry finished her tea and grabbed a tart before following Alice toward the hot springs.

Liliana

[@Breakthrough Crew!]
After the party thankfully said that Io zombifying an entire fort was a bad idea and maybe even a bit of a "moral evil", or even a "violation of human rights and ethics", and the Shizuka brothers made friends with one another, it was time for them to execute the plan! Hiding within the sake shipment, Liliana was more than capable of simply hiding between the large containers, so even if the others were spotted, she could...do...something?

...She didn't really think the plan B part through all the way, and Ayu also didn't seem sure on where she should go so...Liliana figured she'd pipe up. "Miss Ayu, I think you should stay with Shizuka. If anything goes wrong, you might be able to send a message or something, and be our eyes on the outside. At least, that's what I think. I'm not the best planner, but we're all a lot tougher than a normal person. If you got hurt, Takeshi would be super sad." With her piece said though, the fairy would shrink down and sit beside the shipment, ready to get the ball rolling.

Eula

@Enkryption,@Rezod92
After her heart-to-generator with Kerry, Eula would join her in exiting the tent only to find the entire temple area had been reconstructed, with a bevy of beverages and tarts laid out in a whimsical fashion. Eula had never been to the Wonderlands, but she could recognize the spontaneous banquet was probably caused by the present Mad Hatter. Or at least, she had to assume she was that, given their fashionable foppish floppy hat. Smelling the freshly conjured tarts and hearing the discourse of the humans assuming the worst, Eula would take a seat at a table and politely lift one of the "dangerous" tarts to her lips, taking a bite before her malfunctioning eye sparked a bit, her functioning eye lighting up. "Analyzing composition...mm! Finely made flour, salt, lard, chilled butter, golden syrup, lemon zest, heavy cream, eggs, and...apricot jam," the automaton happily said.

After that one bite she couldn't help herself from devouring the rest of the tart in one bite, wiping her mouth with a nearby napkin. "Not an ounce of wonderland magic was used in this, beyond its creation. As such, I can judge this to be 100% safe for human consumption," she said, standing after Alice's speech. "Please, Sorae. If you can't trust her, then trust those yokai who stood in defense of this temple," Eula said, washing down the apricot tart with a cup of black tea, approaching Sorae and looking her in the eyes.

"I know nothing about this woman, but Wonderland magic would certainly disrupt my internal systems if I ingested enough to harm humans. Your people are strong, but I can see that they're afraid. Of what comes next. Of what the future holds. I can promise that as many as I can protect will survive, but...surviving isn't enough." Turning towards the conjured banquet, Eula would gesture towards it with her free, un-bound arm, the almost-formerly-detached one resting in a sling. "Foreign treats from a land they'll never see. A reprieve from the fighting and fear. A chance to know the world itself doesn't want this place to fall. ...That much, is what this woman is promising. So please...let them do more than survive," Eula said, and, having said her peace, would grab another tart and bite into it, smiling warmly.

"...This one has blackberry jam..." she said, perhaps happier looking than she'd ever been since coming here as she felt the sweet taste of fruits, and the golden crust of baked goods melt in her mouth. Alice and Kerry were off to the hot springs, and as such that would just leave Eula and Carroll, the former wondering when the latter intended to finish the crusts of her tarts.

Skarsneek of the Red Hills

“Well, I guess we’ll have to gamble on Shizuka words.” He pointed to the sake merchant, not really liking the odd but if people insist on sneaking through the cart.

As he inspected the cart, he wondered just what position he should take that he can quickly spring out without any problem.

On hearing what Ayu should do, Skarsneek decided for the original plan.

“Stick outside and play the part of the merchant seller.” He suggested with a wave of his hand before gesturing to the cart. “Unless you’re confident sneaking in, we’re all gonna be packing together in the cart.”

With that, he unscrewed both of his club into a much more compact form and went inside the cart before extending a hand to Io.

“Allow me to help you, lady.”

---

Gringor of the Ironhide Tribe

“Spider Lady is Spider Lady.” Gringor said with a straight face, as he kept looking at the rocks. Already plotting his own course there if needed.

“Ok.” He cracked his neck and approached the rocks, though at hearing human lady of whether they should wait for Underboss Takeshi, Gringor turned. “Can climb up and set webs for Underboss till night.”

“If Underboss arrives, then no problem. If arrive late, then still can have fun with fight first.” He explained it with a crossed arm and looked at spider lady. “Spider Lady can hang there and not get tired, right?”

Wouldn’t want the underboss to miss out the fun after all. Gringor also gazed at the time, best to make their move at night when visibility is lowest for humans.

Io

{@breakthroughfriends}

Io sighed as her idea was shot down. 'Of course it would be too easy to do so...' She thought to herself. The issue of prisoners or other innocents being swept up in the attack was unfortunately limiting. Not that Io really thought being turned undead was the worst thing that could happen, but she understood the bias that living things had against dying. She understood it all too well.

Io spoke up in agreement with Ayu. "A more surgical approach, then. Understood." Io's eyes flashed to the sake as Shizuka proposed a toast, though the rest of the team ignored it. She was mildly curious why it was so popular even amongst the enemy, but that would have to come later.

Io was lost in thought as the team readied to board the cart. 'Best to prepare for close fighting. Nothing too destructive, lest it draws more attention...' Io formulated spells on the fly. 'Perhaps something to drain energy for my own sake... Fire and lightning are out... Ice would work. Something to enhance stealth may give us an edge...'

Her focus seemingly robbing her of awareness of the outside world, she walked right past Skar's offered hand and laid on the cart - doing a perfect imitation of a corpse, were it not for the faintest glimmer of magical glyphs rapidly dancing across her eyes.

Breakthrough

Komatsu Bay: @PaulHaynek@The Irish Tree(Lili)@Crowvette@Restalaan(Skars)

Shizuka pondered for a moment, walking closer to the fortress with the other members.

"I was thinking of using a disguise to pose as a merchant, but, I may have built up a reputation among the Varjan ranks at this point. They may recognize my face, so perhaps it's best for me to hide in the cart with the others. Unless, you have a mask or something I could borrow?" He said, looking to the short sake maker who he shared a name with.

He looked at Skarsneek, who offered a hand to Io to help her into the cart. Ultimately deciding against the disguise, Shizuka quickly hopped onto the cart along with them. The grace he executed the maneuver with didn't even cause the cart to rock.

"Well, shall we go? Even if the gig goes south, I don't doubt that I and the others can react in time to make a quick response."

Second Chance

Fort Tanabe: @PaulHaynek@Restalaan(Grin)

"Ugh... Oaf!!" Atsuha snapped.

"Grin-san! Don't be rude to my Nee-san!" Hinami whined. Despite their mewling, the sisters had heard every word spoken by Kikyo. They both nodded in agreement to her proposal, also noticing that she was concern about Takeshi's absence.

"If the wait too long for the young lord to show, he'd perhaps wonder why we just sat and did nothing whilst the prisoners continued to suffer." Atsuha said. I'll scale the mountain and assist in freeing and arming the prisoners. The boorish brute can come along if he wants. Hinami, you stay here with Kikyo in case anything happens, be sure to assist her with anything."

"Aye-aye sister!" She responded with a cute salute.

Atsuha jetting out some webbing, attaching the other end to a craggy rock that jetted off of the cliffside. She carefully scaled the cliffside with the fine webbing, more durable than steel fiber. A little while after, she had made it to the top, standing on the fencing surrounding the fort. Quickly getting off, she scurried to the shadows, and attempted to scout out where the prisoners where being kept. They were several soldiers walking about, all of them fully armored and heavily armed.

Unfortunately, it wasn't exactly easy for a girl with a tree on her back to sneak around...

She did her best to find some weapons for the prisoners to utilize, all the while staying out of sight. Eventually making her way to a secluded part of the camp, she believed she had finally happened upon the prisoners. They were all housed in makeshift cages, clothed in worn rags. She had to be careful, even they likely wouldn't be pleased to see the presence of a mamono happen upon them, thus causing a commotion. She waited whilst the amount of guards hovering around the cages dwindled, and the couple that were left were distracted.

She silently broke the locks on each of the cages, then using her webbing, she placed the weapons she gathered during her trek at the feet of the freed prisoners. It was no time at all for the inmates to realize their new freedom, and they took the weapons and began their assault. Atsuha channeled the ofuda Kikyo had given her, and the ball of light quickly went up into the sky. No doubt the others would see, and thus the attack had begun.

Atsuha assisted the prisoners in their fight, but was sure to maintain distance and opted to cast long range magical attacks.

Komatsu Bay

BREAKTHROUGH

"Miss Ayu, I think you should stay with Shizuka. If anything goes wrong, you might be able to send a message or something, and be our eyes on the outside. At least, that's what I think. I'm not the best planner, but we're all a lot tougher than a normal person. If you got hurt, Takeshi would be super sad."
Liliana

"But... Shizuka's going inside. How will that work?"

"She was talking about you."

"Oh."

"I... would've liked to participate in this mission alongside you." Ayu replied to Liliana, a little saddened that she would be staying in the sidelines. "But I suppose you're right. And besides, I think I've done my fair share of fighting back in the temple attack." The spy sighed.

---

The merchant Shizuka closed off the cart after the taskforce has embarked. Darkness enveloped the inside of the cart with only bits of light entering through the few tiny holes, the holes themselves too small for an eye to see anything outside. Not even Liliana's smaller eyes could see.

However, they did hear Ayu and Shizuka the merchant conversing as the cart got moving.

"How bad is the occupation of Komatsu Bay?"

"A few people fought back. The ones left alive became prisoners... or slaves-- Oh, damn! Varjans! Taskforce, get ready. They might search the cart."

"You said they don't do that!"

"At the fortress gates! I've never seen them this far out here. Ayu, you better skedaddle. I always arrive alone and your presence might make them suspicious."

The cart then continued moving. The taskforce could hear several voices, Varjan and Shizuyaman, as well as axes hitting wood.

"Please... my hands hurt..."

"Keep working!"

"You there! Stop!"

"Sake! Sake for Komatsu Bay!"

"Haha, sake! Hurry up, then!"

The cart moved again and the wails of the Shizuyaman prisoners died down... for now.

...

...

"It's the sake merchant. Open the gates!"

The taskforce heard two tall doors sliding open, and the cart was moving again.

"...I can't believe this worked."

Shizuka the merchant opened up his cart and allowed light for the taskforce. Moonlight, to be exact, it was already night when the taskforce successfully infiltrated the fortress town. They disembarked the cart in a grassy alleyway at the edge of the town. Wails and moans of pains could be heard faintly from the other areas of this occupied fortress.

"This is where we part ways for now." The merchant said to the taskforce. "I'll try to get as many Varjans drunk as possible, so they'll be unprepared for your attack. Stay safe, taskforce." Shizuka the swindler bid his farewell, but not without a final suggestion. Pointing to the building they were hiding behind, he suggested. "You can climb to the roof this building to get a better layout of the town."

From the roof of the small house, the taskforce could see that Komatsu Bay was roughly divided into two. One half was elevated than the other thanks to the natural terrain. In the elevated part, there were a few houses as well as a fancy estate where the town's ruler presumably lived. The lower part was where most of the buildings were located, and there was noticeable barracks smack dab in the middle protected by four watchtowers.

In the horizon, they could see the dock and the bay itself. Both filled with Varjan galleons and ships, but at least the docked ones appear to be unmanned.

Ayu's plan was to target the Varjan leaders of the garrison. They might need to search both the estate and the barracks.

Fort Tanabe

SECOND CHANCE

~ @AzureKnight (HIN & ATS), @Restalaan (GRI) ~

Atsuha successfully infiltrated the seemingly one-entrance fort, evading the gazes of the Varjan guards which were mostly focused on the one entrance.

When she approached the prisoner cages, though, her words earlier rang false. The Shizuyamans imprisoned in the fort were... singing lively tunes to each other. Some were even laughing loudly at missing the lyrics or the beat. All in all, they were in a happy mood. One would think their Varjan captors would be annoyed by this but even that was not true, strange as that may be. A few Varjan Brigands were even tapping their weapons to the rhythm as they patrolled.

All that changed, however, when Atsuha unlocked their cages and dropped weapons in front. Picking up the weapons, the freed prisoners assaulted their Varjan captors while the alarm was raised. Atsuha fired off the signal, which was clearly seen by Kikyo, Hinami, Gringor... and a newly-arrived Takeshi.

"Hey guys, what'd I-- what's that?" The young lord disembarked his horse while looking at the light.

"Your spider friend snuck into the fort and that's her signal to attack. Come on!" Kikyo drew her sword and charged in with Takeshi following close behind.

As the battle of Fort Tanabe commenced, the attacking group saw that the two watchtowers situated near the only entrance to the fort each contained two Footmen archers who were raining down arrows on the freed prisoners. The arrow fire prevented the Shizuyamans from advancing, allowing the surprised Varjan garrison to begin rallying and regrouping.

"We need to take down those towers!" Kikyo pointed out as she slashed a Brigand on the back, her first kill of this battle.

Atsuha saw this too, but she also noticed that a cage she missed contained a large bear agitated by the fighting. Could this be utilized, or perhaps this was not the time to take advantage of a wild, scared bear.

Terauchi Temple

The temple's residents all heard Alice, Kerry and Eula speak their pieces. The refugees all looked to Sorae for her reply, who simply shook her head and turned away. "Tsk. You think this is the first time we got speeches like from yokai? And what has the Automaton gain from speaking the truth?" The Tokinomiya lady began to walk away but not before saying her final words for the time being to the peasants. "...Do what you want."

With permission sort of granted, some of the refugees felt brave enough to sit on the summoned tables and begin helping themselves to the many treats of the tea party. Their faces lit up at the sweet tastes, which encouraged more of the peasants to join them.

"That's "first impressions" out of the way... I didn't want to be talk of the town so soon,"
Carroll

"I believe you are one of the first monsters to ever set foot on this island for... millennia, I think." Revuel Arvida joined Carroll and Eula in their long table, pulling up a chair to sit in which somehow managed to support his and his armor's weight. "It will be difficult not to be the talk of the town. As well as the entire island, if I may add."

"From what I've heard, you are a member of the taskforce who apparently has suffered an unfortunate case of amnesia. In short, this is your first time here, isn't it? Hah, I recently just arrived here myself." Revuel said. "I'm surprised that despite the memory loss, you and your friend seem to have elected to stay here to help. I commend your kindness, but do you have any questions as to where you are or what the situation is?"

"And what of you, Miss Automaton?" Revuel turned to Eula. "Are your... systems holding up fine?"

---

"Stirring speech. That's so you." Takeshi remarked as he caught up with Alice and Kerry.

"Listen, I'm needed elsewhere so I can't hang out and catch up with you. We'll do that later, alright?" Takeshi then patted Alice on the back before looking at Kerry. "I leave her in your care, Miss Kerry." And with that, Takeshi whistled for his horse, hopped in and rode away.

---

The natural hot springs near Terauchi Temple was located in an elevated position overlooking the temple. A red-leaf tree provided cover for the spring as thin wisps of steam rose from the waters. The warmth emanated by the spring invited Alice and Kerry to bask in it, to sink their bodies in the comforting waters of the hot spring.

Io

{@breakthroughfriends}

Io's brief time of inner magic study came to a close when she realized the cart had stopped, and the sake dealer Shizuka gave some sage advice to the task force. It was only after she fully returned to her body that she realized something profoundly disappointing:

Shizuka (the attractive one) had shared the cart with her the entire time, while she had shut off her own senses to focus. Ironically, Io's magical planning prevented her from enacting some other kind of planning, like 'accidentally' grabbing onto him for stability as the cart went over a hole in the road, or something. She hadn't had such a critical planning issue since she was only barely triple digits in age. Io had to console herself that there would be other opportunities... Hopefully.

After uncovering herself from the cart and (despite her height disadvantage) climbing up to the vantage point, she slowly looked over the town. "The leaders. Can we easily identify them?" Io's mind was on the top prize, so to speak - and she unfortunately was not studied on Varjan out-of-combat attire. "Might be best to find them before the chaos starts."

Liliana

[@Breakthrough Crew]
Liliana felt bad seeing how badly Ayu wanted to come along but...it was safer to leave this to the monsters, and the monstrously strong. The little fairy's heart sank as she heard the suffering of those around her, but...they'd bring justice soon. Even if she would self-consciously tug at the hem of her dress, frustrated as she held back her instincts to just...jump out and help.

It would be nightfall by the time they were free to begin their plan. Liliana had a feeling she might have the best chance of moving around undetected, and would float up a bit. Quietly, she would say: "Alright...since I can turn invisible, I think I should check out the barracks. Maybe since the estate is bigger, there will be better places for you all to sneak around in. ...And um...everyone...please be safe." The fairy was more quiet than usual, grabbing her sword before cycling through enough spells to turn invisible.

Now, she just had to find any obviously high-ranking Varjans and...take them out in one fell swoop. It wasn't very knightly, but right now...she felt like people who enjoyed inflicting suffering this much didn't deserve a lick of honor.

The morning after...

"Well......at least it dried off through the night after I splashed it with the spring water in my haste. Thank the gods, no one saw me come back here naked."

A well-rested and dressed Kerry stepped out of the forest, returning from retrieving her clothes she left behind at the hot springs. The hornet stretched her alluring form as she took in the sunrise, the inhabitants of the temple grounds emerging from their homes to begin the new day. She must admit, Shizuyama had some of the most stunning sunrises she has seen in all of her travels. Along with her current mood, it made Kerry feel like she could take on the world.

Speaking of mood, Kerry felt good.

No....scratch that.

She felt fantastic.

In fact, I haven't felt this good in years., thought the hornet as she turned her head toward the temple with a smile. To where the mad hatter still slumbered inside.

Alice wasn't exaggerating when it came to the bedroom. Oh, Kerry put up a valiant fight, even had the former ruler on the ropes a few times, but in the end, Alice left the hornet a blissful mess.

The spearwoman shyly looked away, still smiling as her slightly flared red.

She kinda hoped there will be a repeat or two in the future.

Shaking her head to ward off the thoughts, Kerry would go search for Takamori.

She felt it was time to do something about his very wayward daughter.

Skarsneek of the Redhills

Skarsneek shrugged before getting into the cart as well and lied down, it was going to be a cramp time but he supposed he can take a little break until then.

When a patrol arrived, Skarsneek kept a loose grip around his weapon and slowed his breath. Ears and eyes opened for a sudden strike if it comes down to it.

Luckily they passed without incident, though the cries of the captured made him realized that the Varjans are working the locals and captured for wood.

When they passed, Skarsneek remained in said position right until they finally passed and arrived at their destination proper.

When Liliana went ahead to the barracks, Skarsneek hummed once before deciding it was best they

Cracking his neck and leaving the cart, he moved to the top of the roof and quickly scanned the place. Getting a good layout of the area before coming to two possible locations.

"Your call, boss." Skarsneek turned to Shizuka, he would rather the group move as one than split up. "I'll take the estate. Those Varjans sure love their fancy manors and all, if not, getting their mage is a bonus too."

"Just remember, get them as distracted as possible." He then turned to Io. "You got any poison, powder of spells I can pack before I leave?"

---

Gringor of the Ironhide tribe.

Gringor squated down as he waited for the signal, tapping his fingers in annoyance as he looked at what path is best for him to let loose.

That's when he caught scent of the underboss and turned to him, just as a signal lit up the skies.

"Just in time, let's get to it!" He articulated well this time as every speck of his muscle burst to action, filling the air with pheromones meant to excite and get the blood flowing for battle.

Charging in, they sighted two watch towers that seemed to be proving a massive problem for the ones stuck inside.

How boring.

Moving towards one of them, Gringor pumped his legs harder and harder like a man possessed before flinging himself towards it.

Just before it looked like he'll slam into it head on, Gringor hurled himself forward before striking the watchtower directly with his axe biting deep into the foundation.

He pulled himself upwards and fingers swung forward hard enough to create small dents into the walls, creating a space for him to grab and like a insect. Crawled upwards furiously to the watch towers. Unheeding of the arrows as he kept his face down to prevent a lucky shot striking an eye.

No need for him to look anyways, he can smell the humans miles away and had taken the time to memorize how tall the towers were. It wouldn't be long that he'll be inside.

Komatsu Bay

BREAKTHROUGH

While Liliana has gone to the barracks, the rest of the taskforce group remained on the roof planning their course of action. Since they have now lingered long enough in this occupied fortress, the scent of death and decay finally reached their noses. Varjan patrols could sometimes be spotted passing by and fortunately, these patrols appeared to not bother looking at the roofs of the houses.

A water droplet soon splashed on Io's hood. Looking up, the moon on the night sky was gone. Covered by a thick layer of clouds that heralded rain. And rain it did, a downpour fell on Komatsu Bay which forced most of the Varjan patrols inside buildings. Many of the patrols opted to shelter in the barracks where Liliana went.

---

~ @The Irish Tree (LIL) ~

The warrior Fairy flitted inconspicuously across the dirt streets of Komatsu Bay. Now that she had spent a bit of time in this occupied fortress, the stench of death and decay made itself known to her senses. As she flew quietly, she would sometimes spot a lifeless corpse simply left to rot in the open. Varjan patrols would pass by and barely notice, as if it were completely normal to be there.

When Liliana reached the barracks' walls, a drop of water almost sent her crashing into the soil. Looking up, thick clouds have covered the moon and darkened the night further. More drops of water came down as the rain settled in. The sudden downpour forced nearby Varjan patrols to head inside the well-lit barracks. If a fight broke out inside, Liliana can expect more Varjans than to be expected.

Inside the barracks, the invisible Liliana went unnoticed by the dozens of Varjans inside. As they covered themselves with blankets and fur pelts to protect from the sudden cold, none of them appeared to be high-ranking. However, she did spot a Varjan much shorter than everyone else around him. He looked like a typical Varjan Brigand with no chest armor, a face-obscuring helmet and leather-reinforced trousers. He had a 'quiver' of javelins on his back and he seemed famous amongst his peers.

Could he actually be the one?

Terauchi Temple

TEACHER AND STUDENT

Kerry found Takamori in the more clear parts of the temple grounds. He was with a couple of peasants, the latter wielding bows and shooting arrows at some makeshift targets made of straw and black paint. At least, trying to. Some shots were way off the target while some didn't even make it to the required distance. Still, Takamori egged them to keep shooting until he noticed the Hornet.

"Yokai. You're looking positive today." Takamori noticed Kerry's unusually high spirits. "Had a good time last night? Finally charmed a Shizuyaman to share your bed?"

"Anyway, I found a lead regarding Setsuna. But I'm not sure if you are ready for her." The master archer told the Hornet. "I know I make her sound beyond human, and honestly that's not far off the mark." He remarked about his traitor daughter. "Setsuna is fearless. She may not be an initiated warrior of Shizuyama, or hail from any of the island's warrior clans, but she is a born killer."

"Some recent refugees saw Varjans training in an archery range not far from here. I suspect Setsuna is there."

Terauchi Temple

Alice, Carroll and Eula had remained in Terauchi Temple for the time being. The conjured tea party was long over and the refugees even cleaned up the spontaneous feast without help from Alice. As soon as it was over, however, the doom and gloom of their situation returned almost instantly. Terauchi Temple might have been repaired, but the Varjans' oppression still weighed on their hearts.

Revuel was in the medical tents, using magic to heal wounds. Refugees still kept coming to Terauchi Temple, often tired and injured.

As the three walked through the temple grounds, they would overhear a conversation between two peasant women knitting baskets.

"But they have Lord Oja!"
"Nobody can break him. Not even the Varjans!"
"I guess we can hope... Wasn't it Lord Oja who fought off a pirate raid in Port Izumi?"
"Yes! And he escaped the trap that Lord Ichimonji set for him in that bandit island. Lots of people tried to bring him down, and they wound up dead!"
"Even so, everybody's luck runs out sometime."
"It's not luck. He is the most cunning Island Lord we've ever had. If he were a little more ambitious, he could have conquered all of the Zipanguese Isles."
"Maybe you're right..."
"Mark my words, we haven't seen the last of Lord Oja."

Soon enough, Kerry found Takamori training a group of peasants on how to use bows and arrows in a makeshift archery range. Their performance was.....well, a devil bug would do better. At least they'd got the arrows down range. The hawkeyed archer noticed the hornet's approach.

"Yokai. You're looking positive today. Had a good time last night? Finally charmed a Shizuyaman to share your bed?"

"Pffffft! Nope. I doubt a local could hope to ever dream of being a fraction as good as the one I was with last night.", Kerry responded, quite honestly despite the nearby audience. "So, any word on your turncoat kid?"

"Anyway, I found a lead regarding Setsuna. But I'm not sure if you are ready for her. I know I make her sound beyond human, and honestly that's not far off the mark. Setsuna is fearless. She may not be an initiated warrior of Shizuyama, or hail from any of the island's warrior clans, but she is a born killer."

"I think I'll be the judge of that when we face her. Though, I suppose you telling me to be cautious would have merit. You're the one that trained her, after all."

"Some recent refugees saw Varjans training in an archery range not far from here. I suspect Setsuna is there."

"Improving their aim, no doubt.", she commented, doing a final stretch. "Lead the way, archer."

Io

{@breakthroughfriends}

Io's robes clinged to her body as they began to become soaked by the rain, though the lich paid it no heed at all. She was well beyond worrying about exposure to the elements, let alone being discomforted by it. It would work to her advantage, if anything. Showing off her curves was merely an incidental benefit.

It was not all benefit, unfortunately. "The rain..." Io grabbed one of the scrolls wrapped around her waist. "Ordinarily I could inscribe something for your weapons. But it would wash off over time. My scrolls are protected from water, so they will still work." She briefly explained the situation for Skar, before offering a scroll. "But a strength enhancement should help with offense just as well. At the very least, it might help you jump or climb somewhere you could not normally reach..."

Io watched as the patrols moved in the night, following their flickering torches. Several of them were returning to the barracks - exactly where Liliana was. Io was... somewhat certain the fairy could keep herself out of the enemy's attention, though she felt a slight concern given the nature of her unpredictable magic. Io reasoned that if anyone could avoid detection, she had the best chance despite that.

"I will take the manor as well. Unless you need me, Shizuka." She dryly joked - and perhaps ever-so-slightly hoped.

Liliana

[@Breakthrough Crew]
Liliana had to cover her mouth to keep from making any noise, the sheer disrespect for the dead present making her sick to her stomach. Before coming to these islands, Liliana had never known "death" beyond the romantic. Novels and stories of lovers choosing to die with each other, knights dying for glory, the death of a demon bringing happiness but...

There wasn't any purpose to these deaths. These lives discarded like garbage and left to rot. It made the tiny fairy's arms tremble, her sword's mental suggestions the only thing keeping her from charging in recklessly. ...The Varjans would have to pay, sooner or later. After being broken from her stupor by a raindrop nearly sending her to the ground, Liliana would make haste to the barracks while her invisibility held up, slipping in beside a Varjan rushing inside to take shelter. Black armored soldiers lined the bunks and huddled for warmth, giving Liliana plenty of time to try and spot any ranking officer's among them.

Of course, she had no idea what a Varjan officer looked like, mostly assuming they had giant horns and ate babies for breakfast, but the only one to stand out was a bare-chested man with javelins that seemed to be getting some admiration from his fellow Varjans. That had to be the guy but...if Liliana started a fight here, she'd definitely have trouble getting out in one piece. As such, it was time to...improvise a little. Fairies weren't particularly clever in many ways, but there was exactly one, one definitive way that a fairy was always smarter than anyone else:

Playing pranks!

...Well, maybe pixies were better at that, but...fairies were a close second place!

Thinking on her wings, Liliana quickly flitted about the room, starting to cause minor annoyances that could absolutely be pinned on another Varjan. A slight tugging of a blanket, a slap on the rear, and a dash of magic on herself, doubling Haste and Invisibility up in order to flit around as a whirlwind of whimsy, doing her damndest to make sure these Varjans were at each other's throats...and, hopefully overhear something to prove whether the man with many javelins was an officer, or just a decorated mook.

"I hope everyone else has more luck...but now, if the soldiers are all heading inside, maybe they'll have more luck looking in the manor," the fairy thought, constantly preparing herself in case she got caught.

Eula

@Enkryption
After a long session of hand-holding and battery charging, Eula was right as rain once more and would depart from the building her and Carroll were hold up in. In truth, she wasn't sure if the efficiency had actually increased but...it felt nice, having someone to cling to. Perhaps they could charge together again later. With a few words of thanks, the terse Automaton would idly wonder if any tarts remained before overhearing a nearby conversation.

...It seemed the people's faith in Lord Oja was such that they believed him capable of solving everything if he were freed. Confidence like that doesn't come unwarranted, in times like these. Eula couldn't stand to just wait and recover...and, as long as she was at least helping somehow, it didn't necessarily have to jeopardize her gradual repairs. Eula would pause as she walked, considering what could be done...before figuring, going at it alone would be foolish. There had to be something she could do...

Turning to her companion, Eula would say: "I've heard that a lord's wife has gone missing. Do you think that if we found her, it might help alleviate the people's worries a bit?" A simple plan, but...it was better than just sitting around.

Breakthrough

Komatsu Bay: @PaulHaynek@The Irish Tree(Lili)@Crowvette@Restalaan(Skars)

Much to the relief of the Taskforce, the plan worked. The Gatekeepers were none the wiser to the spiel given by Ayu's brother, and allowed him along with the cart to pass through into the shipyard. It was unfortunate that Ayu couldn't join the team, and it was clear that she also thought so. But, it was for the best in this case.

Having bade good luck to Lili, Shizuka and co made their way to the rooftops of the surrounding buildings. Surveying the area, he noticed that the amount of Varjan troops serving as lookout weren't too numerous - for now. The lower part part of the bay held the bulk of the establishments, that's where Lili was headed. Instead, they were eyeing the higher part of the bay, looking at the more regal houses and the large estate where the former leader of the town lived. Shizuka looked a Io as she addressed him.

"For now, I think it's best we stick together Io-san." He responded, then turned to Skarsneek. "I was thinking we could sneak around for a bit and inspect some of the houses, looking for Varjan elites or other people of interest. Given our talents, I don't think it'll be that hard for us to stay out of sight."

Shizuka wasn't bothered by the rain droplets that began falling on him. In fact, he welcomed it; The swordsman's strength increased in this type of weather. He thought to himself for a moment. "Given the time of night, proximity to the sea, and the current weather, I don't think a fog would be too out of place." The ronin then motioned for the group to follow him, as they would carefully jump from roof-to-roof until nearing the higher half of Komatsu. Confirming there were no guards around, he would the generate his mist on the ground. With a hand, the beckoned them to follow.

"This fog will go where we go, masking our presence. This should help us remain undetected, but don't worry. We, or at least I, can still see fine within the fog."

Second Chance

Fort Tanabe: @PaulHaynek@Restalaan(Grin)

The battle at Fort Tanabe had begun.

With some of the prisoners now free, they quickly took to arms and enacted their revenge on their Varjan captors. Atsuha didn't care much for all the violence, but she was relived that the mission was going as planned so far. She looked back at her team near the entrance, glad that they were able to join the fray as well. She also noticed that Lord Takeshi had finally arrived via horseback, happy to see him here as well.

A furry of arrows had suddenly rained down on the freed Shizuyaman fighters, preventing them from advancing further and giving the Varjans more time to mount a counterattack. Kikyo quickly pointed out the source of the bolt storm: two watchtowers stationed at the entrance of the fort. They would need to take them out before things a turn for the worst. Gringor had damaged one of the towers, and began swiftly climbing up one of them. Hinami had summoned a a three-sectioned bo staff, and with great force began destroying the support beams to the second tower, hoping to cause it to completely topple it over completely.

Atsuha looked at the poor animal that was trapped during all the chaos. She had a mind to free it, but she doubted a scared animal could tell the difference between friend and foe. She'd free it later, for now she had to focus on providing supporting the Shizuyamans. Promptly scurrying over to them, she began healing any injured warriors and then used a talisman in order to summon a barrier that'd protect them from the deadly rain.

"Yes, I'm a yokai, brilliant deduction! Worry about that later, for now, if you want to live stay inside my barrier for now."

Skarsneek of the Redhills

"Thanks for the scroll." Skarsneek grinned as he took it, at least that's something he can use in a pinch.

Skarsneek felt a drop of water on his nose and belatedly, he sighed as he looked to the skies. True enough, rain clouds gathered and knowing the pattern, it'll rain hard.

"And I just had to go half-dressed." He sighed, the rain didn't bothered him as a monster constitution was much stronger than that. It was just that sneaking around half-soaked was going to leave such an obvious trail behind when he goes in.

Still, he followed behind Shizuka diligently and even offered Io some help, if she needed it, this was his element after all.

Though when the fog comes, Skarsneek did felt a tad annoyed. He didn't like seeing where he was going and Skarsneek could still see in near pitch black, but magical mist? That tickled him in the wrong way.

Nevertheless, he can only trust in Shizuka skills and that he's not wrong. Hopefully this mist doesn't dispel at the worst time.

Komatsu Bay

BREAKTHROUGH

With the heavy rain and Shizuka's conjured mist, the three taskforce members were practically undetectable as they made their way to the estate. They spotted a couple of Varjan patrols in their way but not even their lanterns could penetrate the mist and the rain enough to discover the presence of the taskforce.

Drenching wet, the trio reached the lit up estate. There were occupants inside, judging from the shadows that could be seen through the shoji; All of whom oblivious to the taskforce's presence. Thus, the infiltrators were granted a trove of information via the conversation happening inside.

"Has Lord Serek'uar acknowledged my message to him?"
"Yes, Lord Merneptah."
"...And what is his response?"
"Err... the same, my lord. Lord Serek'uar believes that the fleet forming in Akamagaseki will never attack the blockade."
"Damn it. He's a fool. There are already monsters here. If a port in this island falls, that monster fleet will undoubtedly try to make contact with it."
"What do you plan, my lord?"

"I plan to attack that monster fleet. Not to destroy it, just a small but destructive raid to keep that fleet from doing anything. To do that, I may need to pull some strings to convince Lord Na'kra-- Wait." The main voice suddenly stopped. "I sense monsters..."

~ @The Irish Tree (LIL) ~

"Hey, this is my blanket!"

"Was that you?! You think you own this ass?!

Liliana's antics were causing misunderstandings amongst the Varjan ranks. Misunderstandings that turned into tensions. Tensions that turned to shoves. Shoves that turned into fights. Within a minute, the barracks erupted into one huge brawl not unlike ones that could be found in a particularly rowdy bar.

As fists flew and butts were kicked, a javelin flew in the air and impaled one of the brawling Varjans. The javelin-wielding Varjan drew first blood, but this act of murder managed to stop all the brawling. "You dunces! Can't any of you idiots figure out that someone's playing tricks on us?!" He reprimanded basically the entire barracks with his raspy voice. Now there was no doubt that this Varjan was the one calling the shots here.

The shorter-than-most Varjan Champion then plucked his javelin from the corpse and barked out his orders. "Start searching the perimeter. Culprit might be using magic to hide. Someone go to Merneptah in his oh-so-new manor and tell him to come 'ere and see if there's a monster skulking 'round here."

The Varjan garrison organized themselves and began searching with a couple heading out into the rain to warn the local Warlock. The many heavy boots stomping the floor seem to be irritating the Varjan Champion, though. "And for Caldeyrons' sake, BE QUIET!"

Fort Tanabe

SECOND CHANCE

~ @AzureKnight (HIN & ATS), @Restalaan (GRI) ~

Hinami, with monstrous strength and a mighty bo staff, destroyed the supporting beams and pillars of one of the watchtowers. She only needed to destroy a few before the remaining supports could no longer hold the structure. The loud cracking of wood splitting signaled that the tower was about to fall. The archers manning the tower all screamed as they fell alongside the watchtower.

Meanwhile, Gringor climbed the other tower with a speed that worried its occupiers. The Footmen with bows shot arrows at the High Orc, to no avail. When Gringor got close, though, the Footmen brought out their spears to try and at least push the High Orc into falling. While Gringor could very well defend himself, it turned he did not need to. Arrows from Takeshi and Kikyo flew and hit the Footmen who were too focused on Gringor to notice. The couple of Footmen who still remained fled from the ascended Gringor by flinging themselves from the watchtower and hoping for a soft landing.

With the archers and the watchtowers gone, the Shizuyaman warriors that hid behind Atsuha's protective barrier saw the opportunity to finally rout the Varjan garrison. They released their war cries as they charged the remaining Varjans in the fort.

But the jailors were not done yet, a Varjan Warrior unlocked some cages that were smaller than the others; unleashing a pack of vicious Wardogs against their enemies. The Shizuyaman prisoners clashed against the Varjan remnants backed up with their hounds.

A Wardog quickly pounced on Hinami, but it was quickly slashed away by Takeshi. "I'll regroup with Atsuha. Kikyo, stay here and handle the Varjans from this side." The young lord ordered before heading away.

Kikyo simply glared at Hinami before readying her sword. "Get ready, yokai." She said as she and the Jiangshi faced an incoming group of two axe-wielding Varjan Brigands and two Varjan Wardogs.

As the battle continued, Atsuha found herself surrounded by four of the Wardogs. They circled her carefully, using her blind spots to bite on her arachnid legs. "Atsuha!" She then heard Takeshi call her name. The young lord came to her rescue by throwing a kunai at one of the dogs, only to be quickly pounced on by another. At least Atsuha now only needed to deal with two of the canines.

Shizuyama Wilderness

TEACHER AND STUDENT

Takamori led Kerry out of Terauchi Temple and into the wilds of Shizuyama's Onrai region.

As they traveled, the master archer decided to speak his mind. "Since you said you didn't snag a native, I assume you shared beds with a fellow taskforce member then? That Shizuka guy seem to be the only choice, but I doubt it's him you got. Regardless, I suppose I should be glad you're not tainting our island. That tea party that Mad Hatter threw is still suspicious, however."

The duo soon found themselves in a cliff, one side of a wide valley path. On the other side of the valley, there was a lone, very noticeable watchtower. "Look there." Takamori pointed to a setup by the cliff's edge: Quivers of arrows and a bit of supplies needed to maintain them. "Arrows. Varjan and Zipanguese. We can pick up the trail again by the practice targets."

However, there were no practice targets nearby. That was, until Takamori took one of the arrows in the setup and shot it all the way to the watchtower on the other side of the valley. Upon a closer look, Kerry would see that there were straw dummies at the bottom of the watchtower, and that was what Takamori shot. The distance was almost half a league away.

"Fly to the watchtower, yokai. Find out where they went. I'll catch up with you."

"I've heard that a lord's wife has gone missing. Do you think that if we found her, it might help alleviate the people's worries a bit?"
Eula 039

"She's not a lord's wife, she's a killer's wife." Sorae approached Eula with a correction. "Finding her will alleviate my worries, at least."

"You're not part of the group that went with me back then, so I guess I'll need to explain everything to you." Sorae sighed before beginning. "The reason I couldn't participate in the battle of Sanjo Beach was because me and my clan were attacked by fellow Shizuyaman warriors at the time of the landings. I was the only survivor. Your fellow taskforce members and I have been investigating my clan's massacre and our searches led us to a man named Sogen, a friend of our clan, as the culprit. The girl who is missing is his wife. We found her hiding with a bunch of Sogen's hired thugs and we need to get her back if I am to have justice for my family."

"We should start searching immediately but if you have any questions, go ahead and ask away. I'll answer them while we look for clues."

Terauchi Temple

~ @Enkryption (ALI & CRL) ~

"Hey, has anyone come through here with a sword wound? I've lost track of my companion. She would have had a talking weapon."
Alice

The peasant refugees stopped their weaving to speak to Alice. "You're gonna have to narrow down your search more, madam yokai. Almost half of the people taking refuge in this temple has a sword wound." She answered the first question.

"Talking weapon? Haven't heard anything about that." The second peasant woman said. "If you're talking about the companion you were with, I believe she was hanging out with the metal yokai earlier. They stayed in your taskforce's barracks. I saw the metal yokai come out, but not your companion."

Io

[atBreakthroughfriends]

Io nodded to Shizuka's strategy. "Understood. Lead the way." She followed along with the others in the falling rain, her robe completely soaked at this point. She didn't mind it, though she suspected that dripping water would not prove best for stealth.

Io grudgingly accepted some help from Skarsneek as they mounted and crossed walls that seemed, to Io, completely overkill and far too high for anyone's good. 'Waste of resources. These walls would never keep a skilled magic user out. If I didn't have to conserve my energy...' The incantation for simple flight danced on her tongue, though she didn't actually cast the spell. To an outside observer, there could be the slightest glint of irritation at being reminded of her height - but in the dark and rain, it would not be easily seen.

Shizuka's mist proved to be quite a boon, however. Io could rely on the others, as well as her innate sense of mana flow, to navigate well enough. Though, some small part of her had wanted to feign blindness. She could imagine it clearly...

"Ah. Shizuku..." Io grabbed the hem of Shizuku's robe. "You will have to guide me..."

Shizuku's hand softly grasped Io's, and she briefly gasped as she realized how much larger the swordsman's were compared to hers. As she looked up at Shizuka, she could see the lines of his chiseled body gleaming from the rain, and she found herself leaning forward to embrace the swordsman-

Io walked right into the back of Skarsneek, throwing her mind back into focus. 'Ah. I need to concentrate.'

Truth be told, Io had catalogued this phenomenon before. A lich was free of many traits of a living being, like hunger, but not completely free of compulsions that all mamono shared. It tended to manifest as delusions and wild flights of fancy for her, rather than anything a living being would experience. Unfortunately she had only found ways to suppress it, but not be completely rid of it, despite much effort.

She took a moment to clear her mind before continuing along with the team into the manor, where they overhead important plans being discussed. And despite their best efforts at stealth, they seemed to have been detected.

"Perceptive." Io remarked, as she quickly thought of a plan of attack before the opportunity slipped away. "I'll clear a path for you two. Be careful." The warning was likely unnecessary, but she said it anyway.

She rapidly mouthed an incantation to cast a fan of ice shards through the thin wall of the manor. It was an attack aimed at head and chest height for the Varjans inside, but if they somehow evaded it would at least allow Shizuka and Skar to crash through and follow up with their own attacks.
