I could be wrong, as I don't speak Arabic, BUT from my understanding, it can be used to strangers as well. Kind of like saying, "My friend." Like how words change in meaning over time, where it used to just be used for lovers, is now more common as a "We're chill." sorta thing.

Ah ok, haha. Languages are wild. I have arabic friends and afaik it’s used for endearing things.

It CAN mean something like ‘my friend’, though it may be flirtatious?

I just know the flirt/love context so my eyes bulged out lmaooo. So thanks for the context!

Oh yeah, it CAN be used in a flirty way or as a pet name, but with some googling and just what I've seen on youtube, that's where I've come to understand the word to be used like this as well. The intent is changing or has changed over the years.

Shit. That would explain it. xD It's not normal here, unfortunately. And I still don't fully understand why. It's illegal in Egypt, but the laws are soft and smoking is common. I only mentioned it to you, because of the wink face you posted that I posted the "work bitch" gif in response to. ONLY HALF THE CREW IS WORKING just for you x'D
