As I understand it, he can force someone to work on his narrative? I'm a little sketchy on that, because it takes away pretty much all control from the other player.

No, no, its more like nudges, the idea is not that he forces someone to change their actions or opinions, its more like a random thought that offers a new or different opinion.

Plus, the ability is desgined to be used as little as possible, at least the second part.

If you have suggestions I am all ears my dude, god knows I don't want to make a character that steals the fun from other players.

On one hand I do like the idea of the stacking effects on a target, but on the other I'm still a little concerned it's too potent of an autohit to work around when GMing a fight scene with her.

I'm in the camp of "probably not workable if not tuned more towards utility/ability unlock at 9s" over "9s autohit burn until all LoS is broken"... Y'know, on top of the 15s poison application that makes it even easier to force the DoT...

Alright, a line-of-sight based ability that can actually kill enemies doesn't really seem viable; unless there are so many restrictions on it that it ends up never being used anyway. So I guess there's two ways I can approach this.

1. I remove the fire entirely and just design the power around applying a poison-based debuff/crowd control/hindering effect and have Nao play a supporter role alongside the rest of the case.

2. I ditch the Dodomeki concept and go with something else. Probably give her something with a kitsune and say she stole one's Hoshi no Tama without realised what it was and unknowingly strong-armed one into a contract.

@baraquiel: Thinking over his ability as bit more, just wanted to make it clear I wasn't skipping your bio or something.

@Teyao: Hmm, okay, that probably seems fine? Unless my co-GM disagrees I think I can okay this.

@King Cosmos: I did like the Dodomeki angle, but are you alright playing a more support-based character? It's ultimately up to you which angle you want to go with there.

I'll be getting my own character done most likely today, barring any outside circumstances.

Incidentally, if I'm missing anyone please let me know!

Support-based characters are fine, I've got no problem with that. Though, in this case I guess it will just amount to standing there and looking at enemies all the time. Which doesn't exactly make for the most dynamic posts.

I'll give it some thought, but I'm leaning more towards the Kitsune for now.

@vietmyke: Oh right! I missed this one.

I like her and she doesn't seem like she goes too far ability-wise, accepted.

@Aku the Samurai: I missed these, I'm sorry. I think I need to think it over a little bit more? I'll also have my co-GM give it a look since that should speed up the judgement process.

Anyway my bio might be a bit delayed, head feeling a bit funky at the moment.

@Aku the Samurai: I have been summoned, and so I shall provide input for thee (because it's late and it'd be better to provide this statement than not).

My problem with using Ryujin is that he (unlike the other more choleric choices people have proposed) doesn't seem the type to force that sort of physical transformation on people? Given how one of the major traits of Ryujin (and a lot of Eastern dragons, honestly) is access to a human form that doesn't retain any of those classically draconic features, forcing those more animalistic/serpentine traits onto someone doesn't feel like it makes sense. The rest of the cost also doesn't really hold up; unlike Western dragons, Eastern dragons (and the dragon god especially) are not generally presented as avaricious to the point of forcing the collection of treasures in any context. The other part of that is...

Taking really long baths or swimming in a pool? I dunno, seems more like a reward to some people to me.

There's also the dangling thread in the backstory that is the serpent, which is sort of used as an "ooh, look, danger noodle!" sort of reference that is promptly forgotten to tie the character to the school. I assume this is in part a holdover from the Orochi concept from earlier, but still.

That aside, the powerset feels sort of scattered to me. A focus on the ocean and water makes sense, but coupled with the limitations in play that we have for both this character and Rain's own and we end up with a bit of overlap. Immunity to toxins and poisons I'll... Sort of give a pass for now, since he holds fairly notable ties to medicine and healing in mythology. Healing blood I'm not going to say too much on for similar reasons, and talking to sea creatures...

Well, that's the sort of Aquaman ability that we have to force scenarios to have that be useful in at best. Funny, but can be superfluous, so I'm not going to needle at that one too much.

My suggestion is to lean a bit more into some of the mythologies associated with Ryujin if you want to go all-in here and not find a different route forward. For example, Urashima Taro is tangentially related by dint of traveling to Ryugu-jo, which is still his domain, and the myth of Tawara Touda slaying the oomukade also features the Dragon King as a notable side character. Either way, there's a bit of room to draw upon syncretism and more abstract things beyond what's being presented...

But, well, that's just my opinion and not something you need to follow to the letter.

Edit: @Teyao (not like the mention will lock in, but still), I don't think I have any qualms about Mr. Narrator here. It's not usurping control, so I have no reason to shoot it down.

  • Name: Kobayakawa Hiromi
  • Age: 15
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Petite for her age, and slim, on her own Hiromi doesn't present a particularly intimidating figure.
  • Personality: A proud girl to the point of arrogance. At the very least, this is the typical perception of Hiromi's attitude. As the heir to one of the founding families, it is important to have pride in her bloodline. It's crucial to respect her origins. Thus, this is the mindset that informs the standards she sets for herself. Hiromi cannot accept anything but the best possible performance from herself, and ultimately this extends to her expectations of others as well. While she certainly does not believe the average contract-holder is capable of operating on equal footing with her, she expects them to do their best no matter the situation regardless. All of these factors lead a stern, prideful, and often irritable demeanor. Others frequently view Hiromi as cold or harsh, or overly egotistical. From Hiromi's point of view, she is simply holding others to the standards they should hold themselves, and taking pride in her own origins and family history. Despite this pride, the viewpoint of Hiromi and her family at large is that the purpose of their existence is as a shield to maintain order in Japanese society and in the hidden side of the world. They slaughter Grudges and protect the workings of the world. Hiromi's dedication to this purpose is paramount above all else, even her pride. Hiromi has an affinity for traditional clothing and food, things that are somewhat unsurprising given the often very traditional mannerisms of the Founding Families, but she especially loves Japanese sweets. Despite her slim figure, she can eat quite a lot of Japanese sweets. She is also rather reluctant to speak about the nature of her Cost, unusual given her typical pride in her own abilities. Hiromi is somewhat jealous of more mature-bodied girls, something she tries not to show directly but inevitably ends up letting spill.
  • Backstory: Dating back to the very earliest days of the Heian era at least, the Kobayakawa are one of the Founding Families. It is at this time they established their contract, setting its payment and using the abilities granted by it to slaughter Grudges. Over a thousand years later, with the advent of the Shadow Academies, they were initially in opposition to their creation. By the logic of the Kobayakawa and their allies, it would dilute the status and overall capabilities of the protectors of Japan from Grudges. Only the Founding Families, in their eyes, possessed the capacity to act in this role. This conflict nearly lead to open violence, but it was the swelling numbers of Grudges as modernization bloomed in Japan that served as the final push. Though, the Kobayakawa never fully accepted it alongside their allies. Like most of the other Founding Families, traditions still remain important for the Kobayakawa, and so much of Hiromi's early life was immersed in these traditions. She was trained from a very young age to wield a sword, and lived in the large and isolated property owned by her family. She has been prepared for the purposes of serving as the heir to their bloodline and their techniques, something they invested a great deal of time and effort into. Her high degree of spiritual Energy, combined with her natural affinity for their techniques, proved to make her an excellent heir. While the Tokyo Academy Higher-ups view it as important to educate all Contract holders, it is viewed by the Kobayakawa as a formality rather than a necessity, born only from the agreements between the Founding families. It was for this purpose that Hiromi entered the Tokyo Shadow Academy after graduating from Junior High.
  • Skills: Hiromi's early life was spent training her to wield a blade, and due to the high amount of effort placed in her training and her affinity for such purposes this has become considerably skilled for her age. Her training was particularly in the Kobayakawa's own personal form of swordplay, made to incorporate and formalize their various techniques for use with a blade.
  • Spiritual Energy Grade: S
    • Contracted Being: Tsukuyomi
    • Contract Rank: A
    • Contract Abilities: The Kobayakawa Bloodline Contract with the Lunar Deity, Tsukuyomi, giving them a twofold ability. The manipulation of reflected light, and the localized alteration of gravity. The former is in a directed state for use as an offensive attack, by focusing and condensing reflected light from the edge of a blade into beams. This permits long-ranged slashes or thrusts by projecting moonlight from Hiromi's weapon, an important part of Kobayakawa Swordplay. This facet of their contract abilities is known as Mangetsu. Multiple techniques of the Kobayakawa family utilize Mangetsu, the strongest of which being Gekkou Hansha. This technique uses the reflection of the moon and the edge of the blade to bounce light back and forth thousands of times, creating a massive blaze of lunar light encasing the katana before swinging down. Hiromi, however, has yet to master this technique. The other facet of the contract ability is known as Shingetsu, and is used in a variety of ways. Hiromi in particular uses it to scale walls or swiftly pull herself from one point or another, or push herself away for evasion. She may also use it to greatly reduce or completely stop a single target's ability to move, though as of now her ability to affect others is limited to a single target at a time. She may also use it to increase of decrease their speed, causing them to fumble, or suddenly align them to another surface or object to send them flying. Spiritual energy reinforcement can be used to defend against this ability, but it will likely not block it entirely.
    • Cost: Performance of the Moonlight Cleansing Ritual by the family, once every ten years. The nature of the ritual is kept secret, with only those involved in its performance privy to its exact details.

@King Cosmos: Looks good now, accepted.

@Teyao: Accepted.

@Aku the Samurai: I agree with my co-GM here.

@RoadkilBanana: Personally I feel you went too far the opposite direction power-wise, as it's just double attacks with absolutely nothing else. I also feel a lot of elements of the character's backstory and personality could be better fleshed out.

For everyone else, I'll be starting the RP either on Friday or over the weekend!

@VitaVitaAR Heylo! I am interested in joining, if spots are still open. I do have a few questions: primarily, is it okay if I play someone that is *not* Japanese, but was recruited anyhow because of the potential of her ability/because she was causing a fuss? Either one of the characters I'm thinking of playing had their powers forced upon them, and trouble followed shortly thereafter. I mean, if these two schools are the only ones of their kind in the world, it would make sense to have foreign students.

Secondly, would you be alright with a Seer/oracle type of character? This sort of power would require some input from the GM when I use it, obviously -- and I don't play it all-powerful. The future is a tricky thing. Sometimes visions are unclear, or just plain wrong. I'm thinking (for the character I think I'd prefer to play) that on a family trip to Norway she was blessed/cursed by the Norns. I'm aware this is more of a support power, though it does have some combat uses -- being able to vaguely sense attacks allows for a slightly faster reaction time, and she might be able to suss out an enemy's abilities through physical contact with it. I am having trouble thinking of a good cost, so if you have input there that'd be great.

The other option is a character with a spirit that serves as a melee fighter, emerging from shadows to inflict harm. This character would have been kidnapped by a cult and had her parents tortured and sacrificed (that being the cost) to bring the spirit forth. Shakti is an ancient (and made-up) spirit; I don't know if you're okay with that since it's not specifically Japanese themed and not actually from any mythology, though I do have some created lore for the spirit. I'm also not sure if you're okay with a power that is dangerous to allies -- Shakti *wants* to murder everything it sees as a threat to its host, and that includes civvies and the host's friends. Cas (the character) and Shakti have come to something of an understanding, but it's still...aggressive.

I'd want to talk to you at length about either character's backstory, probably in PM (although discord works too). Please, let me know what you think!
