PixieSlime Party

Asura was correct in that it took more than a single torch to get a dead body burning. However, Steve’s webbing was much more flammable, and its sticky nature made it hard to beat the flames out for any creature caught up in the tangle of corpses, struggling undead, and now a slowly spreading flame. Not to mention, the fur of the dead dire rats--both the literally dead and otherwise--was dry and dirty and greasy by nature. The more the various creatures struggled, the more the sticky web entangled them, and the longer the threads continued to burn, the greater the pyre became. Against both a blinding bright light and the dangerous heat, the undead began to shrink back--and soon the party of Hipixie, Slimes, Spider, and Squire were out of the chokepoint!

No other monsters had come around the edge of the lake yet. As they kept going, they encountered no further resistance--the few scuffles they had on the way here had not been replaced by new minions. Soon they could see another flame--Knight Zieglar, waiting at the camp just outside the cave’s mouth.

“Trent!” The armored man jumped up when he spotted Asura hefting the boy over his “shoulders.” As he assisted the red slime in bringing the youth into the light and safety of the campfire, he placed a hand on his forehead and closed his eyes.

“Surprisingly little damage, all things considered...but he’s overdrawn his Magic Power...and his Stamina is nearly gone.” The man glanced at the sword, Undine, but as of yet said nothing. He turned to the Reincarnators and the other monster companions.

“I suppose things didn’t go as well as we hoped, then? I didn’t see any signs of the Core’s destruction. Do any of you need healing?”

After explaining all that had happened inside the caverns--Zieglar would ask a few questions to pull out every detail, in a concise and matter-of-fact manner much like a seasoned military veteran--and casting his own Minor Healing spell, Rank II, to top off their HP, he also cast a new spell on Asura. Placing one gauntleted hand on the Amorphous Slime’s membrane, he focused until a light purple glow, mixed with minty green sparkles, suffused his palm.

“Lesser Theriac, Rank I.”

Night had long settled outside the cave, but they could still see the distant light and smell the smoke of the funeral pyre Ardur had created. It did not seem like any of the monsters would pursue the would-be-dungeoneers. Trent was already sound asleep by the time the rest of the group’s treatment and explanations were finished.

“I’ll wake him up in a few hours when it’s time for watch, and take two shifts myself. Ardur, Asura, if each watch goes around two hours, I’ll be relying on you. I’m sure your other companions are sensitive to danger, but I doubt they can measure time too well. In the meantime…”

He handed everyone a bowl of stew. It smelled...somewhat familiar? Asura couldn’t be sure, but that might be a Bugbear hair floating in his portion...In any case, the group soon settled in for the night.

YOUR BODY IS BEGINNING TO CHANGE! You are undergoing Transformation! Based on your life experiences, your ability to survive, and the strength of your will, new paths have appeared! Choose carefully--there is no going back! WARNING. THIS PROCESS WILL LEAVE YOU TEMPORARILY VULNERABLE.

OPTIONS (* Indicates Suitability):
**(Adult) Amorphous Slime (Variant Chance) - Slimes that have a preference for shape shifting sometimes develop a weakened membrane. Their defensive abilities stop increasing so quickly compared to normal slime types, but their shapeshifting and movement skills rise more quickly. These slimes avoid water, as it has a much stronger diluting effect on them.

  • Increase speed-stats (reduced)
  • Increase Rank: Limited Shapeshifting
  • Very Slightly increase non-defensive base stats
  • Increase Potential

*(Adolescent) Giant Slime (Variant Chance) - Giant Slimes have simply grown bigger, and their membranes have increased in strength so as to hold more mass without causing their bodies to split. Their digestive fluids also become stronger, but as a result of these advantages they require more food.

  • Increase Rank: Physical Damage Resistance
  • Increase HP (reduced)
  • Increase base defense-stats (reduced)
  • Very Slightly increase non-defensive base stats

(Adolescent) Mush Slime (Variant Chance) - Slimes that have ingested lots of poisonous, rotten, or otherwise unsavory things. In addition to building up their own tolerance to poisons and diseases, anything that their body cannot fully break down is concentrated into “bubble spores” of impurities and pushed out towards the top of their membrane, creating a “cap” of sorts that often bursts on an unwary attacker.

  • Increase Rank: Poison Resistance (reduced)
  • Increase Rank: Poison Spit (reduced)
  • Increase Rank: Iron Gullet (reduced)
  • Increase Rank: Acid Spray (reduced)

***(Adolescent) Parasite Slime (Variant Chance) - Like the Amorphous Slime, it is more fluid in its movements, but its mass has been more efficiently concentrated to make it a bit smaller and denser than an Amorphous Slime. With the appearance of an oversized bacterium, it tries to find ways into the bodies of other creatures. Using Skills like [Slime Shell], [Cling], and [Limited Shapeshift], it worms its way into a vital organ or hard-to-reach place and begins to siphon nutrients from the unlucky host. If allowed to grow, it will eventually be able to completely take over another creature’s body, sometimes producing strange hybrid Transformations. However, many dangers come with relying on the power of another for your own survival…

  • Increase Rank: Blood Drain
  • Increase Rank: Limited Shapeshift (reduced)
  • Slightly increase all non-defensive base stats

OPTIONS (* Indicates Suitability):
**(Adult) Oculus Spider - A low-ranking Arachnid-class Insect-type Monster. While it possesses venom, it is not that much more potent than a normal spider and thus it is virtually harmless to humans save in very large doses or in the case of specific allergies. However, because it has adapted to Mana in its environment and thus become a Monster, it has gained a large eye that works differently than its normal eyes. It will swing from a web in a hypnotic manner to entice prey.

  • Increase all base stats
  • Increase Potential (Overlevel Boost)
  • Increase Rank: Doze (reduced)
  • Increase HP

(Immature) Razorpede - A fairly typical Arthropod-class Insect-type Monster. Its long body is supported by many pairs of legs, each of which have sharp blades of chitin running along their last joint. Its mandibles are also quite vicious, capable of snapping right through an animal’s hide. As if that weren’t enough, its bite is venomous and it moves quite swiftly.

  • Increase Speed stats
  • Increase Rank: Poison Fang (reduced)
  • Increase Rank: Faster (reduced)
  • Increase Potential (Overlevel Boost) (Reduced)

(Immature) Guard Mantis - A fairly typical Insect-type Monster. The back of its body, and its two forelimbs, bear thick shells it can use to fend off attacks. After an enemy tires itself out trying to hurt it, it uses the shells to deliver powerful, battering-ram strikes to the prey.

  • Increase Defense stats
  • Increase Rank: Defender (reduced)
  • Very slightly increase all other Base Stats
  • Increase Potential (Overlevel Boost) (Reduced)

Ardur The Mighty Hipixie
Let there be light >> a time to rest /// Adventuring day 5 // Night / Location - outside the cave

Ardur continued to throw stones but not at anything in particular just enough to keep the beasties back. The way had been cleared and the light and heat from the burning pile of squirming bodies seemed to be keeping the rest of the enemy’s at bay. Asura continued to carry Trent out of the cave and the bigger knight was there to greet them with a worried look. “I’m alright I just need to recuperate my mana.” Looking down at Steve he smiled and scratched her carapace. “You did amazing Steve.” He spoke with a smile as he picked her up. “ooo and an evolution huh? Hmm.”

Setting the spider back down the pixie looked over to the knight while he was casting healing spells on the others. Trying to see if there was a difference between what the knight did for healing and what he did for healing. On top of that he was very curious as to what spell he used on Asura and watched him very closely, “Stamina or antidote?” he wondered as his attention was brought back to his spider.

Let’s see where to put your skills, hmmm 4 points into web spit. 6 points into thread control, 3 points into blunt resistance and the rest into pierce resistance. Ardur paused while still smiling down at his friend. Out of the choices and our current situation I believe it would be best if you stayed an Oculus spider. So I choose Adult Oculus Spider, when you come out of it I’ll have your soup and what’s left of the bow horn for you.” With a smile he patted his friend on the head again and sat down to eat his food.

After he was done eating Ardur Stood and looked to the knight after he was done talking about watch shifts. “That’s understandable, if you need me I’ll be over here meditating.” Setting the bowl down Ardur glanced at the cocoon that Steve was in and smiled.

The pixie made his way to the edge of the light and sat down he began to meditate while he was thinking of where to allocate points. He was talking in his head as he allocated the points, “9 points into minor regeneration I, 3 points into Reinforce, and 1 point into Guidance I. with this I should have three points left for what I want if it’s even possible.” He thought while continuing to meditate. There were two things he wanted to do before he slept.

The first thing he began to do when he felt his mana was sufficient enough to do so. He used Guidance II and spoke quietly as he looked up at the stars. Spirits of the sun I Ardur call out to you. To Dhulfiqar the King, I call out to you. To Galatine the Protector, I call out to you. To Claidheamh the Mother, I call out to you. I do not call to the three holy spirits because I believe I can acquire more power from you, I call to you because you all represent the sun and what it means to your people, what you mean to the children of the sun. I worship the sun therefore I worship all of you. I only ask that you tell me what I can do for you and I will accept it. He paused for a moment and envisioned the remaining three skill points he had being given to them.

I gift you each one of my skill points, so that you may give it to a follower in need or do with it as you please. Even if you or your followers don’t get along we all still worship the sun and each one of your strengths compliments each other’s. So much so that together there is no weakness among you. With that offering he returned to his meditation with a change. He didn’t focus on drawing more mana into him, this time he focused on the mana he had. Taking his time to identify within himself the different types of mana that all swirled around inside him.

Focusing on his core the middle of his abdomen right at the base of the rib cage he envisioned his mana. First as a white light, glowing brightly as it churned in a circle this was the mana of the spirit. That was the mana he currently held. Again he began concentrating more this time on the mana he felt when he was casting fireball, flare, or the warmth of the sun and mixed that white light with orange. Then he remembered the mana from the water and what Undine had used to cast Depth charge, this portion of his mana was blue. Again he continued remembering what the mana that came from the earth felt like and how it felt to use stone shot and again turned it to the color green.

He continued through the strange sensation he was making, and this time separated out what he felt was the mana he absorbed from the air and turned it yellow. All of these colors white, orange, blue, green, and yellow swirled around in that little ball in chaos. It began to make him nauseous and made his chest start to hurt. Slowly Ardur began to keep all of these colors in their own part of the circle making them move in equal unison around each other in a sort of weird pinwheel. Ardur was unsure what he was doing or what would come of it, he could only hope it helped with mana control and possibly maybe even his mana reserves. Ultimately he would have to break his concentration and lay back on the grass out of breath.

The stone turned out to be more brittle than expected, cracking on the first non-shielded hit, but that only helped to confirm that the Shield spell did indeed make the stone harder and more durable. The Shield spell was also more brittle than expected, lasting only a single hit before breaking; a temporary buff then, good for only one good hit at the lowest level. Interestingly, hitting the tree trunk with the shielded stone also yielded better results offensively than the non-shielded stone; though that could just be due to the fact that the stone didn’t break the first time.

Still, it was a solid proof of concept. He could buff items and non-organic materials and those materials benefitted from those buffs, either defensively or otherwise. The next step was to try and create elemental variants of the Shield spell, or to try and shape the Shield spell into something that provided different effects.

There was also the dagger, which had been a part of the loot they had taken from the Goblins and which had yet to be claimed by anyone else. Oberon flew over to where he had seen it last and was quickly able to pick it out from amidst the other items due to its obvious quality and man-made nature; man-made as opposed to Goblin-made in this case. It was made out of some kind of metal, iron most likely, and while it was a just a relatively simple dagger in his current form it seemed more like a short sword than anything else.

The Sprite picked it up, requiring two hands to do so, and examined it using his Material Analysis skill. Once he had read over the information provided he began to channel Mana into the weapon, the magic collecting within his palms before flowing into the hilt of the blade. Oberon then pushed the Mana further, focusing his attention on the blade itself and letting the Mana gather there.

He activated his Mana Sense and observed the magic as it hopefully turned from its usual colourless state into something else. Metal Mana would be a useful attribute to add to his list of skills, but he also wanted to see if it was possible to concentrate Mana into one particular part of an object and keep it there. In this case, pushing Mana into just the blade and nowhere else.

“So, er, hunting. We should get going sooner rather than later; before it gets dark.”

Femus's diligence paid off in modest but highly useful dividends. Additional details about the pixie species and the herbs that surrounded them gave efficient solutions to present issues. Firstly, the pixies were easily misdirected by new experiences and found Nira's spell fascinating. Second, they found the arrival of night a thing to fear. Third, the plants around them provided both knowledge about how magic behaved in nature as well as necessary resources.

As soon as the pixies were gone, Femus went called out loud enough for Nira to hear him. "Nira! I've found Healing Herbs and more Wild Kele for dinner. Could you help me by getting some claws or small bones from that Hobgoblin while I gather these? I'd like to try to make bone tools tonight. I think we'll need them if we're going to keep making things for ourselves. And, I think we should do some planning after we get back to the branches."

Femus was pretty sure that she wouldn't have a problem helping him but it didn't matter in any case. Dinner and medicine took priority over crafting projects. So, he took another close look at the plants, studying them the same way he would study an animal before butchering it. Where is its 'meat', the part that they would eat? Where are its 'bones', the strong structural parts that would resist harvesting and digestion alike? He wished for a blade, but the closest thing he had to a blade was his 'hands'. Lesser Force might serve well, but he needed to improve with it.

He thought of small creatures that had sharp limbs like mandibles or stingers. Then, he tried to imagine what it would feel like to actually have a pair of 'mandibles' instead of 'arms' in Lesser Force. To pinch and cut rather than grasp, push, and pull, this was his goal. He concentrated, keeping his glow suppressed but no longer focusing on matching his environment. Then, knowing that this was likely to be difficult and expensive, he willed more mana into his Lesser Force limbs and willed them to change their function for a short time, accepting reduced freedom of motion in exchange for the kinds of force he wanted. All he needed was to tighten the area of effect and increase the pressure to simulate mandibles. First, he tried on the Wild Kele. From this plant he tried to focus on gathering the parts closest to a creamy white while leaving the rest behind. He would try to gather at least four of these and would meditate if his mana ran low. If pinching wasn't quite enough, he would add twisting since they needed the food more than he needed the practice.

After this much practice, Femus proceeded to gather two of the Healing Herbs with the same pattern while also staying alert to the dangers of the oncoming of evening. They had to be quick if they were to be prepared and relatively safe for the night. Once everything was collected, one way or another, Femus would devote his energy to getting all of this little harvest up to that familiar branch. If things went well, there might even be time for another run before nightfall. But, as always, there was much to do and all of it was important.

Asura for once was glad they didn't encounter anything else when they retreated. Nothing worse than having no stamina, no items, a party member down, and being poisoned then getting ambushed. Surprisingly it was dark outside, had they been in there for that long? He didn't remember fights taking forever, if anything he remembered them being over fast despite it feeling like an eternity had passed.

Zieglar jumped up and helped get Trent out of harms way and into the campfire light. "He abused that shield of his heavily, so I'm not surprised he took so little damage." He commented as he seemed to spread out, relaxing near the flames. Sure every little bit he felt his health tick down, but he felt like the poison would pass before he died. He still tried to eat the poison with his acidic innards nonetheless.

Zieglar spoke up which got a question in Asura's head. "How can you tell a Core has been destroyed? But yeah, we didn't get to it. It has assimilated anything alive and has a lot of undead. A decent chunk of the horde has been destroyed and the more advanced units seem to be permanently dead as well. Choke point helped us not get overwhelmed and Trent getting his hands on that sword also helped in a big way." He said before 'shrugging' at needing healing.

"I'm out of Stamina, I'm poisoned, and I've taken some hits. So healing wouldn't hurt." He continued while moving out of the Bownhorn skull. It wouldn't survive another encounter so no point keeping it on. Zieglar cast a spell, Lesser Theriac, which Asura tried to decipher. He might not want to use magic but he wanted to understand it. If he understood it he could counter it or cancel it out entirely!

Once he was healed he was given the message he was ready to evolve again. "If you're taking watch you're going to be alone for a bit. I can evolve again." Asura stated while accepting the mystery stew. A slurp and it was all gone within his body, the bowl being cleaner than it ever had been before.

While he digested he examined each option he had. Two were immediately nixxed, they didn't fit what he was trying to do. He could continue to go along with what he was, which was essentially a speed tank. Or he could still be a small speed tank that could control other creatures. It said there were dangers from relying on others power, that was true enough. But why would he neglect himself? Only a fool would ignore personal growth. Still he had a higher suitability for it so maybe that meant a higher Variant chance?

System, five points into Spiritual Awareness, eight points into Limited Shapeshift IIII, and I choose Parasite Slime. He thought before going cocoon. Lets see if there was going to be some interference this time. He tried opening all of his senses to see if there was some being, because that stall last time had royally pissed him off. He didn't need interference damn it.

. . .

Watching the water coalesce from the air before becoming part of the orb forming between her palms was just about as amazing as Nira had imagined, and it was even more fascinating to observe the details of the process now that she had her eyes open. Apparently the pixies felt much the same from their enthusiastic and curious reactions. Though she couldn't lose too much focus lest the spell return to normal speed, she still watched as two of the pixies tried touching the droplets while the third circled in and out of view.

The entire experience leading up to this moment had been a bit hectic, but Nira had to admit it really was unlike any other she had experienced before. About to get lost in the thought of what conjuring other elements must look like, light from the setting sun glanced off the orb and brought her back to awareness. She'd gotten so caught up in the situation that she hadn't realized how late it was getting.

Not wanting to have wasted water or mana, Nira was about to take a drink from the water orb when a bird call more noticeable then the rest startled the other pixies, which in turn made Nira jump a little midair and drop it. Watching the reactions of the pixies and how they pointed to trees on the other far side of the clearing, Nira could only make a mental note that the area must be of some danger at night. Turning her head back a moment late, Nira could only watch as her aquaintences darted off in the opposite direction.

*Yup, definitely something going on with that.*

With such a good indicator of potential danger, Nira almost started moving before Femus could speak up about new information and his request. Right, that. Reorienting her mind yet again for probably a fifth time that day, Nira merely nodded in response as a slight bit of mental exhaustion kicked in.

Reviewing her day as she looked over the hobgoblin corpse, she could only be thankful things had worked out as well as they had. From getting to the tree, to feeling flustered over a lack of clothes, to finishing mana orb and killing a slime, to qualifying for evolution and eating, to getting a leaf dress and making a new spell, to helping kill a hobgoblin and plan for a hunt, to somehow managing the pixies despite her lack of a proper plan, it had been quite a day. So to just have a moment to chill as she looked over a corpse for some easily removable small bones, morbid as it may be, was a minor blessing.

Having finished her observation of the hobgoblin's corpse while ruminating, Nira decided it would likely be a choice between hand bones and feet bones, simply because the hobgoblin's teeth would still be too well anchored from it's fresh death. Remembering some offhand remarks about finger injuries from her past life, she decided those would likely be the easiest to remove. Making her way over to one of the limp hands, Nira momentarily thought about looking for a rock before remembering the damage mana orb had done at range. Surely using it point blank would be effective for damaging the connected joints, let alone removing a finger or two.

Deciding on the index and middle fingers, Nira placed her hand above the two related knuckle joints before using mana orb with the intent of slicing through skin and muscle. Regardless of effectiveness, she then got to work at ripping skin and flesh off the bones until she had three of them detached. Once obtained, she decided to briefly cast aqua orb above her prizes to dry them out and minimize the smell. Moving the orb away, she used it to rinse her hands and arms off as best she could before picking up the bones she had collected and taking them up to the resting spot in the lower branches. Hopefully she hadn't spent too before she and Femus could talk about further plans.

Asteria

Asteria smirked at the sounds of the chaos behind her, but didn’t risk glancing to see how thing were going. She continued running towards the entrance full blast, pushing her muscles even though they pulsed unpleasantly. She was pressed as close to the ground and one of the walls as possible, seeking to blend herself within the environment and make herself a smaller target.
