I can totally get behind the Mary-Jane loathing.

#TeamGwen

Gwen Stacy isn't a character; she's Stan Lee's ideal woman insert, and any characterization was tacked on after the fact to try and add weight to her death post-mortum.

In the 616 Universe, anyway.

Yeah, my quest to read all 800+ ASM issues petered out in the high 200s, McFarlane years. I'll get back to it someday. Conway-Wolfman-Stern is my definitive Spider-Man era.

I started out intending to read every Spider-Man publication ever in chronological order. Started out great with Lee's run and Untold Tales of Spider-Man. Petered out with Marvel Team-Up. Now I just skim through Spectacular and wait for something neat to happen in Amazing, lol. There's only so much Stegron the Dinosaur Man and Rocket Racer that I can take. (There's some rogues for ya, @HenryJonesJr.)

I can totally get behind the Mary-Jane loathing.

I've only read Ultimate Spider-Man and seen the 'Amazing' movies.

And here I am still plodding along and reading all of the mainstream/core Marvel 616 universe comics (and re-reading Ultimate, etc since they merge later) in chronological order.

It's a process.

Well I mean, I've seen all the Spider-Man movies but Kirsten Dunst doesn't really sell me on MJ versus Emma Stone's Gwen.

In terms of comics, I have only read Ultimate Spider-Man and I quit when Miles was brought in.

Naw, I just didn't like the character. John Stewart is my Green Lantern and Static has always been a long time favourite character since the animated series.

I just hate Miles Morales.

When it comes to Spider-Man, I'm more of a Bendis' initial run on Ultimate kinda guy. I also liked early JMS, before he went goddamn insane and wrote shit like The Other and Sins Past.

Best part of JMS' run is that he made Pete a teacher. Nothing better than that if you want to give him a job to do with science, while still keeping his "everyman" appeal.

Looking at you, Slott.

Excellent post, @Master Bruce. I like the idea that Nashton is a profiler and agent of CHECKMATE. Really neat spin given we've had him be a police detective, a majority shareholder, and a bunch of other roles in these games before. Can't wait to see how things turn out going forward.

Probably because Mary-Jane Watson is as interesting as beige wallpaper in a room with brown carpet and brown furniture. Very few writers can make such a bland character engaging and interesting.

Look, is Dan Slott the worst writer Spider-Man's ever had? No. Is he a dumb poopy-head? Yes.

I cannot abide a Spider-Man writer who openly loathes Mary Jane Watson; I cannot abide a Spider-Man writer who's more interested in Otto Octavius than Peter Parker; I cannot abide a Spider-Man writer who turns Felicia Hardy into a cartoonish, "I hate Spider-Man and will see him destroyed at any cost" villain. But mostly, I cannot abide a Spider-Man writer who can't stick a damn landing. His starting ideas could be really good stories... if he ever did them any justice.

*sweats nervously*

though to be fair loathing would take a character who actually inspires emotions in me so I'm good

Normally I mock you because it's entertaining. So I'll have to thank you for saying something so fundamentally wrong that I can now mock you for a genuine reason.

I call it like I see it, bro. She has never interested me as a character in really anything I've ever read barring maybe some of the later Ultimate issues and Spider-Gwen.

I don't even understand this post. There are a great many criticisms that could be leveled against MJ -- and I'd agree with a fair few of them -- but "bland" isn't one of them. Gwen has the monopoly on that front. At least MJ, if nothing else, could be reduced to a label: party girl. What's Gwen's label? "Spider-Man's (dead) girlfriend"?

You missed so much!

Kraven's Last Hunt.. Spider-Man vs Wolverine.. The Death of Jean DeWolff... Spidey with Cosmic power... What If vol.2 #20-21 where Peter marries Black Cat instead of MJ... What If vol.2 #88 where Spider-Man had evolved into a monster... the death of Harry Osborn... Spidey with the Phoenix Force... Aunt May dying (but not really)... Typeface...

MJ is a one-dimensional diva in most of the Spider-Gwen comics. How can she be interesting at all?

Eh they covered a lot of it in Spider-Man TAS, Unlimited and Spectacular.

MJ was more interesting in one panel than Gwen was in the entirety of her appearances.

On an unrelated note, a dislike button would be really neat right now
